Something mind-blowing is happening in Suriname

Oil fever has arrived in Suriname! This small and sparsely populated South American country is the latest to join a select list of countries with large offshore oil fields. Neighbouring Guyana is already striking gold, now Suriname hopes to follow in its footsteps.
However, dangers lurk for Suriname: geopolitical tensions have been brought to the continent by Venezuela over its claim to the Essequibo. And, as if that were not enough, a thoroughly corrupt state negates the chances of wealth reaching a population shaken by poverty and stagnation.
How did Suriname get to this point, why are so many hopes being pinned on this small country, and can the conflict over the Essequibo Guyana disrupt Suriname's plans?

A lot to say about the after effects of our (the Dutch) colonial years there, also in how many Surinamese folks moved over to us after they gained their independence. Views of these people can vary a lot.
The pronunciation of Surinamese names in this video is funny from a Dutch perspective. They still speak Dutch there, to a large degree at least, and names (for as far as I know) are pronounced more with a Dutch tone. Boo-ter-say as the video says it, it more pronounced as bow-ter-sě. I’m not expert of course, but can’t help noticing it.
Anyway, I hope the changes Suriname goes through end up very positive, that and how forested the country is. From what i know the country is one of only 2 or 3 that absorb more CO2 than create/pollute with it.

I am an Afrikan male born in Suriname. May I draw the following to your attention. The flag of Suriname that you have displayed in this video is geographically in correct. Since the 1960s Guyana has been occupying Surinamese territory in the South known as “Tigri”. While the current leadership of Guyana is claiming the Esequiba region with crocodile tears from neighboring Venezuela, it has forgotten that it is occupying oil rich Surinamese soil in the South. In one way au do not blame the Guyanese because this border dispute is a phenomenon we have inherited form the British and Dutch colonial rulers, who are now playing holy in the geopolitical world arena of justice. We have become victims of Western men greed and must not become enemies
of each other Because a good neighbor is better than a distant european friend at 10 Downing street or the House of Representatives innThe Hague, which has never represented our interests. Read the Iceman inheritance .

Point of history; Independence was on 25 November 1975, not 1980 that was Bout-er-se, not butese. People had the choice of staying or migrating, and half of the then 600,000 inhabitants migrated to the Netherlands. Bouterse was a military leader who staged a coup d'état in 1980 and committed crimes against the leaders and people of Suriname with a larger event in the so called December killings of 1982. For this, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Surinamese court in December 2023 and has been a fugitive since.

The research on this video could have been much better, the picture you paint of Suriname is not consistent with the reality of the country. Santokhi's government has been accused of the worst corruption in Suriname's history and most of his policies are failing or heavily opposed by the people because they favor the interests of outside actors.

The western border of Suriname is formed by the left bank of our mighty Corantijn River, which starts at the extreme southwestern tip of our territory, where it is named the Upper Corantijn, and from there all the way north to the Atlantic Ocean. That is: that which you drew as dotted line should be a solid line and continue north. The area which you would otherwise bite out of our territory is 20million hectares of our unique and almost (for many other nations) unimaginable rich piece of Amazonic land. And when gathering information about countries, try to consult more with local citizens from as many different backgrounds as possible. Not just mainstream channels.
