Linda Ronstadt once described Neil Young’s voice as being like a howling prairie wind. I think that’s a great analogy! 🌺✌️

The reason this song is such a departure for Buffalo Springfield is because this was Neil Young’s “first opus”… completely conceptualized by Neil Young, created and produced without the rest of the band, almost secretly, immediately before Neil departed the band to venture out on his own. Because of this, this song is also on Neil’s DECADE album which is the great classic compilation of all of Neil’s earlier work. The Simon & Garfunkel comparison is apropos as the same studio echo and depth of instrumentation exists in this song and in many Simon & Garfunkel songs such as “Bridge over Troubled Water” and “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her.” Good catch, Harri!!

The reason there seems to be so much diversity in their songs is because the group had two powerful genius' in Neil Young, and Stephen Stills. Both extremely gifted and driven. Although there was a lot of disagreement between the two they are still best friends after all of these years.

See Harri? Thus why we listened to whole albums back in the day. This reminds of a Moody Blues influenced number. Try Rock and Roll Woman or Hello Mr Soul or my favorite (who's name I can't remember) lyrics go: I won't be back till later on, if I do come back at all..

One rarely-noted aspect of this record happens at the snare drum beat between the two sections. The recording separation flips. Everything originally coming through the right speaker now comes through the left, and vice-versa. Listen to how it sounds different at 2:07-2:08. An astounding Neil Young touch.

If you have time to check out a couple more Buffalo Springfield songs then check out "On The Way Home" , "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" and "Mr Soul". All great songs! Buffalo Springfield members went on to form other great groups as well. Stephen Stills and Neil Young were also members of Crosby Stills Nash & Young with Stephen also forming the great short-lived band Manassas, and Neil Young also forming Crazy Horse. Richie Furray went on to help form the band Poco. Love your song selections!

I had this song on an anti-drug LP back in the early '70s. I interpret it as a man dealing with his dear friend falling too far into drugs--a bad trip, maybe?--and he's trying to reassure her/him that they are loved.

I’m pretty sure people will be surprised, but this reminded me of the Norwegian group a-ha. I was trying to figure out what song this reminded me of and although there definitely are differences, I can see that a-ha might have been inspired by Buffalo Springfield for their song “Over The Treetops”.
Check it out if you read this and let me know if you get what I mean.

My favorite song by Neil Young. This is really all him without the rest of the group as Neil Young left the group for awhile when he wrote and recorded this and I think it's the Wrecking Crew involved. The song was credited as the Buffalo Springfield because it was included on their 2nd album Buffalo Springfield Again.
