One of my fav Buffalo Springfield/Neil Young songs. So beautifully written and recorded. It really envelopes you into the feeling it’s attempting to capture

I've always loved the harmonies on this song. It really points in the direction of CSNY. "Rock And Roll Woman" could almost be a CSNY song. In fact, my wife thought it was for a couple of decades.
All three of their albums are very good. Pick almost any track from them and you'll be happy.
edit: I had NO idea that Neil was the only vocalist on this song. Nor that the wonderful Carol Kaye played bass on it. Just another feather in her cap amongst the thousands of feathers there.
I learned something new today. I guess even at 66 that's possible. LOL!

This + Broken arrow, Mr.Soul. Early signs of Neil Youmg’s talent.

When Neil Young experiments it is always at the very least interesting, if not quite successful. This one is just amazing, being (as you said) so gorgeous and gentle. It's so beautiful it can make one tear up at its beauty. So glad you tried this one out, and bless those who recommended it. At some point you should check out "Mr. Soul", "Broken Arrow"(both Neil Young songs done with Buffalo Springfield, and Neil Young's later solo electronic "cover" of "Mr. Soul".

Happy to see this reaction. Same reaction for me when I first heard it years ago. It is a beautiful track, so ethereal and soothing. Check out "Broken Arrow" and "Mr Soul", unless you're doing the whole album anyway !.

Graham Nash did a song with The Hollies called Wings that was his attempt to emulate Expecting To Fly.
Other Springfield songs…Young’s Broken Arrow, Mr Soul, Out of My Mind, On the Way Home…etc
Still’s Bluebird, Rock n Roll Woman, Hung Upside Down, Do i Have To Come Right Out and Say It etc
Not forgetting Richie Furay’s Sad Memory, Kind Woman, A Child’s Claim To Fame etc

Good song with the Buffalo but it's an absolutely gorgeous tune when Neil does it solo on the piano. Plenty of versions on TH-cam.

Their huge hit was the sadly always relevant "For What it's Worth", but they had a lot of other good tracks too: "Sit Down I Think I Love You", "Pay the Price", and "Mr Soul" for three, and then there's the epic "Broken Arrow". I also love the poetic "The Hour of Not Quite Rain".

An odd band because they rarely recorded together! Expecting to Fly, recorded on May 6, 1967.....has Carole Kay on bass.........you looked them up. Only Neil from the band. Don Randi does some remarkable piano playing on Broken Arrow! The Beach Boys also used The Wrecking Crew to record their albums. Their song, Bluebird is great and has all the members playing, (almost!)

The most famous Buffalo Springfield song is "For What It's Worth" which you will have heard, probably multiple times, in movies and documentaries. It is one of the most famous of the songs from the sixties era. Buffalo Springfield recorded Neil Young's "Flying on the Ground is Wrong" but before the released it, the Guess Who also recorded it and released it as a single thereby making it that Neil Young made a cover of his own song (or is that just the Guess Who released a cover before the original).

Interesting, not often a song’s definitive interpretation is not the author’s. Drama.

This is one of my wishlist pending (for some time, in fact) and it's mostly because of this song.
Cmon', with these kind of songs we might wonder that English speaking pop musix are the best in the world. That's only because we all have it as a cannon. There is beautiful music and songs everywhere. More than half of my record collection are English speaking music.
What do. I. Mean with all this talk? Well, I know this excellent work you do is by nature based on surprise, but...
Take songs like this one and forget all the other crap.
No. better not. For once you traveled the barren desert of ideas, when we reach to something like this oasis, it's SOOO good... 😊

A fine suggestion, i have only this one album by the band. Maybe you would like to compare the song "Everydays" which you find on this album with the Version fron the seconds Yes Album. Both versions are georgeous, and both in their own rightful way. Cheers!

Hi Justin. Dave from London. As you say, Stars Aligned. So much of your reaction I agree with. Beautiful sound, gorgeous harmonies.... but, I just think the song itself is not very memorable. Sorry.
P.S. my song ref Stars Aligned is actually an album title by Finland's Von Hertzen Brothers. More terrific vocal harmonies.
