Yeah, who cares about hits. Michaels along with his 250lb drummer named Frosty put out several albums of great music and was a strong concert draw in the late 60s & early 70s.

Word is it is a Hammond B3. Hard to believe all this sound is from just 2 instruments . He does the bass part on the organ and then the drum set. Freakin' impressive.

My cousin scored front row tickets to see Blood Sweat and Tears in Oakland California back in 1965. I was a young kid in the 5th grade, I think my uncle made my cousin take me but he was cool with it. Anyway Lee Michaels open the night. I think it was him playing keyboards and a drummer named Frosty. They blew me away, I had never been to a concert before. Whatta night! BS&T were amazing as well but I was truly amazed by Lee Michaels. Frosty did a solo using his bare hands in place of drum sticks till they bled. Never seen anything like it since. This was long before I did any type of drugs, was an impressionable kid. I can remember that night vividly. Thanks to my young cousin, we were close then but drifted apart. I miss him.

I'm so glad you played this! I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice in the late sixties and he was one of the best live acts I've ever seen and I've seen the Stones, the Doors and Hendrix, etc. Just two people on the stage, Lee on the organ, and a drummer! Amazing, they didn't need a guitarist. I always felt he was totally under rated.

Harri, the more I visit channels such as yours (although none can compare!), the more I realize how incredibly fortunate I was to have been in my late teens and twenties in the 1970’s when there was soooo much incredible music to consume. Another thing that was great (and often overlooked) is that regular people like me could afford to go to live shows. Nowadays there is so much glitz and production involved in concerts that the ticket prices are prohibitive to us regular folks. Wow! Were we lucky?! Great reaction!🌺✌️

This is my Lee Michaels story:
In 1971 when I was 19 years old, my friends and I went to go see Lee Michaels in concert at the Long Beach Arena. We didn't have very good seats. We were on the second-tier to the side of the stage almost behind all of the amplifiers and our view of Lee was blocked by all of that gear. What made it worse was Lee Michaels sits at his keyboards during the whole show since he plays while singing and all we could see was the back of his head. How annoying!! The good thing was the stage was real high off the floor and where we were sitting, the stage was about five feet below us. Well, this nineteen-year-old long-haired dude suddenly had some huevos and I got up off my seat, headed right for the rail, went over it like Spider-Man and climbed down onto the stage while Lee Michael's was performing. As fast as I could, I ran towards him with my hand out. He turned and looked at me and without missing a note he reached out and shook my hand. The crowd really roared . It was awesome . As fast as I could, I hightailed it back to the rail, climbed up jumped right on over and took my seat. It didn't take long for security to come and get me. They escorted me out and I was banned from the Long Beach Arena for a year. Oh well I wasn't able to finish the concert but I can say that I was honored to shake Mr. Michaels hand. I'm 70 years old now and I think that what I did back then with no regard, not thinking twice about my actions which caused a disruption during a concert. Shame on me. But at the age of 19 we are all a little brain-dead. The thought of me jumping over a rail and climbing back over makes my bones hurt thinking about that today

Lee Michales is one of those guys that was here for a minute & gone now for years. It is almost impossible to find any info on where he is or what he is up to nowadays. Rumors have floated for years that due to his concerts & his amps being set so loud, that he went deaf. There are also rumors that he is in Hawaii.
If you are interested in a bit more from him, I'd like to suggest what may be the most heartfelt anti- war song ever. He has a song simply titled The War that is still applicable today. Give that one a listen.

I heard this for the first time in the summer of 68 on an underground rock station in Philadelphia. The summer of 68 was larger than life for me because of this astounding cultural event that was happening around me.

Lee bought a music store in my home town after he retired from playing. I owned a piano moving business, so I did a lot of work for him. If you didn't know his background you would not have suspected it . He looked like a perfectly normal suburban dad.

Another great song you might want to check out with a similar feel as this one is "Musta Got Lost" by the J. Geils Band.

I still have this single from the time it came out and later got his album. I beg to differ with the one-hit-wonder idea because as much as I love this song, I'm even more impressed with his version of "Can I Get a Witness?" which he released after this one. You should definitely check that one out. For more blue-eyed soul. I'm going to urge you to listen to Lulu's "Oh Me, Oh My" (again), Chi Coltrane's "Thunder & Lightning" and Valerie Carter's cover of "Ooh, Ooh, Child" for more timeless gems. Lee really was/is righteous! How can a Hammond organ sound so funky?

Hi Harri ... One of my favorite songs. What I caught my attention, way back when it came out was, he actually gives HER side of the story in a fair way.
I don't know if this song made me this way or if I was already this way, but even when I am asking friends for their opinions about a argument/fight I've had with someone ... a friend, a stranger/group or even my "significant other", I always try to explain BOTH sides. Then, I ask them their thoughts about it (i.e. if 1 or both of us were right or wrong) ... because I never just want them to agree with me because we're friends. I honestly want to know. If I'm wrong, I WANNA be corrected, so the next time, I WILL be right, then and from that point on.

Most of his music was just him on the organ and a drummer(I think, named Frosty)

Harri, glad yr digging this as much as I did actually since 1971. Loved it then, still do. Really happenin song! Unfortunately a one hit wonder. Believe he had a few songs out tho nothing like this. Another great one hit wonder same year was SWEET MARY by Wadsworth Mansion. No one reacted to that ever I believe You know what I Mean one reaction.

Yes a gem, my mom had this album, I've loved it since I was 10-11 years old. Another gem of a one hit wonder from the time is Jonathan Edward's cover of Bob Dylan's "Sunshine"
