Buffalo Springfield played alot in my teenage years! Tons of talent came from this band. Niel Young, don't need to point out the career he had. Richie Furay and Jim Messina go on to form Poco. Stephen Stills of CSNY fame. And while they were Buffalo Springfield, man the music they put out! Words can't express, unbelievable band!

@@Timoeltejano Me too! So much talent came out of Buffalo Springfield -- between Poco, Neil Young, all of Jim Messina's work -- and Poco influenced the Eagles and Jackson Browne and many others. This band was near the top of the entire rock and roll family tree.

Not sure if your familiar with the Long Ryders but they crossed all of the genre lines in the 80's. It's like mixing country with punk sprinkled with psychedelic soul.
They were the original alt country. In fact I believe that's who the term was coined for.
      Still going today.
They were heavily influenced by Poco and Buffalo and Neil.
It always seemed that the Eagles stole from Poco and not just music stylings but musicians. I met Timothy B Schmidt and what a genuinely nice guy. He said he went to the Eagles because he couldn't pay his bills back in the early Poco days and it was like a 10 thousand percent instant raise.

    • @stpnwlf9
      @stpnwlf9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Timoeltejano I am not familiar with them. Sounds like something I should check out. Yeah, the Eagles seemed to make a habit of poaching Poco's high-harmony bassists, didn't they? LOL Poco was never a cash machine like the Eagles but they made a ton of great music!

I agree with Neil Young’s assertion that Stephen Stills is a genius. I think Neil is too, but Stephen Stills seems underrated. He is an amazing guitar player, has a great voice, and is a brilliant songwriter. Stills’ Helplessly Hoping by CSN is one of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking songs I have ever heard.

This is a great folk rock band that was formed in the 60's. It included Stephen Stills, Neil Young & others. Their song "For What It's Worth" was their biggest hit but they had a few other good songs such as "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing", "Bluebird" & "Mr. Soul". The group disbanded in 1968. Stephen Stills went on to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash with David Crosby of the Byrds and Graham Nash of The Hollies. Neil Young launched his solo career and later joined Stills in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1969.

Sweet! Back in the early eighties I inherited a bunch of old records from a great uncle and among them was Retrospective: The Best of Buffalo Springfield. "For What It's Worth" is the song you reacted to last year and the song they are most remember for, but they released a bunch of other great tunes as well, like this one! "Mr. Soul", "Kind Woman", "On the Way Home", "Broken Arrow", "I Am A Child". Buffalo Springfield combined folk and country and psychedelia with rock, but are usually categorized as folk rock alongside The Byrds.

In the 60s a lot of singers and musicians were doing folk music, and others rock music, but a number of them began to migrate from various places to Los Angeles, where a new sound was being made, which was to become known as folk rock (including psychedelic versions thereof). There’s a great story of how Neil Young drove from Ontario, Canada, to L.A. in his 1953 Pontiac hearse to look for Stephen Stills, who’d already gone to L.A. One day, as Stills and Richie Furay were driving along Sunset Blvd, they spotted the hearse. Not long after, Buffalo Springfield was formed.

This is a studio piece. The acoustic rhythm and lead guitar parts are by Stephen, who wrote it and sang lead. He's quite the flash on many guitar styles. This one is mostly bluegrass-style flat picking, but I'm sure he threw in a few other tricks, too. The electric guitar could be Neil's or Stephen's. It shows elements of Neil's rawness. If there's a Hammond B3 deep in the mix, that would have been played by Stephen, too. The banjo coda is by Charlie Chin, not a regular member of the band. There's another version that substitutes the banjo coda with an extended acoustic and electric guitar jam. It's been a while since I've listened to this. It really is a wall of sound.

If you haven't heard their music, you should give it a listen. Stephen Stills (of Crosby, Stills and Nash), Richie Furay (of Poco), Jim Messina (of Loggins and Messina), Neil Young, Dewey Martin, Bruce Palmer. No pedal steel or steel guitar in this song that I can hear. Rusty Young (pedal steel) joined Buffalo Springfield for their final album (played on "Kind Woman") and later went on to Poco, but wasn't in the band for "Bluebird". Rusty passed away last year.

Buffalo Springfield, a very talented folk, country rock band. Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin and a session bassist on this song from 1967. You may also want to check out the "B" side of this single, "Mr. Soul".

I was surprised when this started because I thought it was another song that I think is called Bluebird! It’s softer and I remember that it started with something like “Bluebird sitting in the morning light, take your broken wing and fly away” or something similar. . This actually sounds like there’s a lot of Beatles influence.
I’m confused but did like this, altho not nearly as much as the one that I thought it was!
Anyone know the name of the other Bluebird song? It was huge when I was a teenager??

I had to join in too with the Beatles’ Blackbird, which inspired my username. However if I’m not mistaken Paul McCartney also did a song called Bluebird during his solo career.

You're thinking of "Blackbird", originally by The Beatles, covered by Crosby Stills and Nash.

Hi Harri .. The singer, Stephen Stills, had a hit solo single in the 70s called "Love The One You're With" .. Do yourself a favour, and check it out soon .. It's powerful, and has a great feel ..You'll love it !

I think the song you heard before and were referring to is "For What It's Worth". The famous chorus, "I think it's time we stop
    children, what's that sound?
    Everybody look, what's going down?

The great thing about music in the late sixties and early seventies is that you did not have to categorize songs just enjoy them as the mix of styles are played by many bands all over different FM radio stations like WNEW in New York!

I believe you heard 'For What It's Worth' ("There's something happening here..."). Also a bit "psychedelic" as well as speaking to social issues, against the war, the right of dissent, etc. Very influential, and a springboard for its members who all went on to new heights as others have elaborated, now that I've had a look at other comments. Great stuff, Harri, thanks again and cheers! ;>D

Harribest, wondering if you'd get back to more Supertramp. "Ain't Nobody But Me" is a really good jam if you haven't heard it, and Roger Hodgson's "Even In The Quitest Moments" is a majestic masterpiece
