"Nobody's right if everybody's wrong" what an iconic line!

This was released in the later part of my junior year in high school. It was one of the pivotal songs of my high school years. (Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone, and Cream's Sunshine of Your Love were two others.) I didn't get into Zappa until after I graduated. He is my all time favorite.

I’m 62, huge Neil Young fan, but never really got into Buffalo Springfield until about five years ago. They’re so much more than “For What It’s Worth,” which kinda made them a one-hit wonder. Check out Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing, Expecting to Fly, Broken Arrow, and Flying on the Ground Is Wrong. Great stuff.

Buffalo Springfield included Neil Young, Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Richie Furay from Poco, and others. I think Jim Messina of Loggins & Messina and Poco was also a member for a while. In retrospect, they were a supergroup in reverse, of fellows who became stars in this band and that became even bigger stars on their own after leaving Buffalo Springfield. I'd also suggest the song Mr. Soul, Kind Woman, and Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, as other songs of theirs to try.

This was their contribution to the counterculture, rising against the war at the time, and this song became an anthem for a generation. It also helped launch the careers of Neil Young and Steven Stills. The first note will usually be enough to awaken the whole song in the mind.

Great! Your impression of the history/music/protest/times/etc. is very well expressed. For someone seeing/hearing it much later, you "get it" to a very impressive degree. Kudos to you!

The back story on this song is that in 1966-67 there were increasing tensions between the local counterculture who frequented the clubs on Sunset Strip in LA (especially the Whisky a Go Go) and the local business community, who saw the hippies as a menace to their commercial interests in the area. The LAPD frequently harassed hippies and longhairs in the area. Things came to a head when a small club on Sunset called Pandora's Box was forced to close due to this harassment, and a bunch of protestors gathered in front of the club, leading to a stand-off with the LAPD. Stephen Stills happened to drive by the protest, saw what was going on and decided to take another route, sensing that trouble was brewing. He went home and started writing the song, which he pitched to the band and Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun with the phrase, "Here's another song I've written, for what it's worth". Ertegun thought that was the name of the song, and when he heard it, he immediately recognized its potential as a hit and rush-released it as a single - he even reissued the Springfield's first album, taking off one song and replacing it with For What It's Worth to maximize sales.

The bassist, Bruce Palmer, is facing away from the camera to avoid being identified and deported to Canada.

It's funny - of course I know this song, but it turns out, I never knew the name. And not much excuse, since I was around in '67.

Come check out the best acallpella country group out there.. Home Free. Great vocals and a world class beatboxer. They do original and covers like Man of constant sorrow, Hillbilly Bone.
In the Blood. Honestly they do all genres.

Classic. Glad you mentioned protest, civil rights and Vietnam. I have to suggest lesser known tracks Human Being Lawnmower, American Ruse, and Motor City's Burning, all by MC5.

For country I suggest Croy and The Boys, and Drive-By Truckers and Steve Earle
