    Ford's all-new Mustang Mach-E is an electric crossover that comes (for now), with RWD or AWD, and with a smaller battery, or a larger one. This is the AWD with extended battery, which Ford estimates will go 270 miles on one charge. In this video we test the real-world range of the Mach-E by taking a mixed-road journey on highways and two-lane side roads to see what range a driver would expect from the Mach-E Extended Battery.
    Watch our DYNAMIC test of how the Mach E goes, stops and turns here!

    One of the positive things about the “phone is your key” thing is that the Mach E recognizes which driver is using it based on your phone, and then tailors range estimates to who is driving it. So if you always drive aggressively but your spouse drives very eco friendly, your range estimates will be different.

    • @42dunbar
      @42dunbar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Peter Evans Actually if you do the math on the Watt hours per mile divided by the usable battery capacity it would’ve made it 270 miles. The display range left is overly pessimistic. The whole point of warming up the battery and cabin on the charger is to extend the range. And the Tesla model Y long range gets about the same range (270-280 miles) despite the claimed 320+ mile EPA range.

    • @42dunbar
      @42dunbar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Peter Evans It’s basic math. Matt averaged 322.5wH/mi and the Mach-E long range has 88kWh of usable battery capacity. Let’s do the math 88,000/322.5 = 272.8 miles of range. Go ahead and tell me where the math is wrong. I won’t hold my breath.

    • @42dunbar
      @42dunbar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Peter Evans As I expected you wrote a bunch of nonsense without refuting the basic math. Not really surprised at this point. I am using the actual data from Matt Farah’s drive and not some theoretical consumption numbers. You don’t seem to be entertaining the most basic explanation which is that the Mach’E
      S remaining mileage calculation leaves about 15 miles of buffer so that you don’t get stranded on the side of the road with no battery left.

    I keep thinking of different things to be concerned about: Will the battery maintain the same change in 3-4 years? What range will you get with the heat or air condition on? How will the battery perform in a real winter with below freezing temperatures for months at a time?

    • @tealruby582
      @tealruby582 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your answers are specific to lith-ion batteries, not really a specific car
      - Matt used AC during this trip. It used about 10% of the battery
      - Modern lith-ion batteries do not see significant capacity losses year over year. Model S from 2012 can still charge up to 90% of original capacity. Tech has only gotten better since.
      - Expect to lose about 10-25% in cold weather. But again, cold doesn't "hurt" batteries, it just makes them less efficient.
      I imagine Ford's 170 miles figure leans conversative and is what you'd expect on a 15 degree day in Ann Arbor. 250 for nice CA weather and 170 for Michigan sounds about right.

    • @JonathanEzor
      @JonathanEzor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, for now at least, Ford has locked out the top and bottom portions of the batteries' actual capacity, so you can never either fully charge or fully discharge them. That will likely help the longevity of the batteries over time, even if Ford unlocks more via an over-the-air update in the future.

    The things about EVs are mileage will vary if you expect to take a trip over 200 miles often an EV may not be for you. in California you can drive around cities easily before hitting 200 miles of range and do a quick charge for 30 mins and pretty much get anywhere in SoCal. just be responsible and charge your car every other day and you will learn to fall in love. Look how far cellphones and battery tech have improved in the past 15 years EVs haven’t even been mainstream in the industry for 10 years. These cars have much to improve on but for many can be used daily just fine.

    • @OlJackBurton
      @OlJackBurton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonyc6996 Maybe if you had an older Leaf. Even with a 150 mile real world range, you would still only need to charge overnight on a 240V outlet for most days. On a 4-5 hour trip, like in the video you would need to charge once for 20 minutes to over an hour. Definitely more inconvenient than gas, but still quite feasible...

    • @OlJackBurton
      @OlJackBurton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonyc6996 Where did you get 90 miles from? The 150 miles i cited came from multiplying the 250 mile "real world" range tested in this very video in CA weather, by 60%. Or 250 miles x .6 = 150 miles a day "real world" if you live in Antarctica, where it still isn't freezing all year round in some areas. Why would you take another 40% off? Also that 40% reduction is the maximum reduction which includes using full heat and accessories, not the average reduction in cold weather. Now for you, 150 miles a day might be usual, 2-3 hours of driving a day at highway speeds depending on traffic, 54,000 miles a year and oil changes every month or more.
      For the vast majority of people, 100 miles a day (or even 90 miles) will be enough; most people don't drive 36,500 miles a year or more and usually get their oil changed every 3 months or more. And they usually see less than 100 days of freezing weather, so their average range on most days is well over 150 miles (or even 90 miles) on a full charge. The bigger issue will be the longer road trips or business trips or out of city/state traveling (4-5 hours or more) where you will need to find a charging station and deal with the non-Tesla network and variable charging speeds of 10 minutes to well over an hour. It shouldn't be a deal breaker though. Now an older Leaf with a 70 mile range with the hypothetical "40%" reduction and no garage to park it and charge it or protect it from the winter and late fall elements and a commute longer than 15 miles one way? Yeah, that old Leaf or a similar ranged BEV wouldn't work out for that person...
