- This took entirely too long but the result was pretty cool. Voltron Legendary Defender is an important part of my life and always will be. Half of this video was me complaining and half of it was me geekin out. The purpose though was to remind people of all the good in this show, even if I had to trek through the bad. I'd argue that S1-S5 were great, S6 is okay, and S7-end dropped the ball.
Season 6 had those god tier fights tho...I'd argue that S6 was the top of the mountain before the fall, it wrapped up the majority of plotlines and didn't have any controversy other than my mans Lotor in the finale

@Nato Kev Yeah I kinda liked season 7 too, it had lots of character development, funny episodes that show the paladins relashionship as friends much better (like the Garfle Warfle Snick thing) and the Earth battle with Atlas and Voltron was actually not that bad at all. Totally agree with you, they didn't needed season 8 just to do some bizarre Allurance and then just kill Allura and put some forced gay couple just to "satisfy" the fandom. Geez, they could have done so much better but I love this cartoon anyways

the resolution of the clone arc is so horrifying. clone shiro may have been a clone, but he didn't know that. he wasn't evil. he believed he was shiro, he had his memories, he had experiences. he was a whole ass person, and they just murdered him in cold blood and NO ONE addressed that. just cause he wasn't the "original" shiro doesn't mean his life wasn't worth something!! so so awful
my god thank you, i always felt so alone in the fandom feeling this way or rlly caring about clone shiro. my man didn't do anything wrong and didn't know who he even was and then he just got disposed of like that after being used to hurt his friends, with absolutely no thought to him as a sentient feeling PERSON with autonomy. and the way the team just referred to him as his "evil clone" after that was just cruel. esp when they lived and had fun w him and he bonded w lance even.
he had a weird haircut and was snappy and stressed (u know, normal flaws) so the fandom treated him like the devil 🙄 we could have had an amazing identity crisis type arc w him but it was just never addressed. i wonder if the writers even know how fucked up it was to handle his character like that. justice 4 clone shiro

As a Hunk fan, the show was a big disappointment for me in a lot of ways, as I'm sure Lance fans can relate. Season 1 gave us some GREAT Hunk content, and season 2 did some good stuff for him as well, but it wasn't until season 7 that we got another great Hunk arc, which I loved. But,,, it came out of seemingly nowhere, I would've loved to see more of Hunk missing his family before they got to Earth, maybe talking about it with Lance. Most of Hunk's presentation a lot of the time was just,,, fat/food jokes and it was kinda,,,,,,,,,,,,,, not great.

Aaron Hadley the reason why these characters were done so dirty is due to the writers just seeing them as comic relief and the lack of character interaction really messed things up and it shows because in the original voltron Coran was actually a serious character that had dept but in the reboot he really doesn’t
Hunk and Lance are kind of a package deal, having them (or the original trio with Pidge) as the focus in more episodes would've been fun. Their dynamic is great and we could've explored Hunk's and Lance's shared history via Pidge asking questions and such.
Sokrates with ADHD I would’ve loved some episodes like that, giant space mech battles are cool and all but that would’ve been my favourite part of voltron
I feel like a broken record whenever I bring this up but I found it so frustrating that they completely messed up Lotors arc. Like I hate to be biased but I loved my english purple elf gentlemen and his lesbian squad. They did him SOO dirty by taking all his progress and turning it around. He was obviously abused by his parents and was slowly learning to be better only to be written off as crazy all while his mom gets his deserved redemption arc😔😔
Straight up them having Lotor have a full on mental breakdown then claiming that was proof he was crazy the whole time was the final extra bit that made me lose faith in the writing. Like no shit he'd snap after someone he developed feelings for says "you're like your abusive father"

Heck the steven universe fandom was ok with waiting eons for things to come out I'm sure people would have been ok waiting for the seasons. If they were allowed to keep their story and have a decently paced schedule it could have been awesome ;0;

I wish we had more backstory into Allura’s life. Her family, her friends, her aspirations before the planet was destroyed. Would’ve given us more emotional attachment to her and made us root for them even more as they tryto take down Zarkon (whose name I forgot for like a year).
Agreed. Keith and Shiro were looked into so much, along with Pidge and Allura. You got to know about their childhood and things, and you got to know a tiny bit of Hunks, but *HUNK NEEDED MORE SCREEN TIME.* And Lance, well he was known as just the insecure one. ;w;

This was very therapeutic, especially as a Lance fan. Pretty much of the characters were done dirty by the end but holy shit, they really took everything away from Lance (his ambitions, his love interest) and stuck him on a farm and expected the fans to be happy with that. Great editing and video overall!

Gosh, looking back on Voltron just breaks my heart every time. I loved the show and I had a very positive experience with the fandom back in the day, but at a certain point in the show, it was kind of like watching a train riding on tracks that lead straight to a brick wall. You know it's going to crash and you can't stop it, and if you were me, you couldn't look away.
The show always had its good moments, in every single season. I can always point to a few episodes in each season that I would happily rewatch if I still had a Netflix subscription (also if I didn't feel an immense sense of sorrow whenever I think about the show). I still love the characters and Lance will always hold a special place in my heart (they did him so dirty though) and I wasn't mad at the addition of Romelle (I really liked her actually!). I think it was just the main storyline that got muddled and lost. The last two seasons had me really confused about Honerva's motivations and intentions, the powerups and new Voltron forms kind of started to feel ridiculous, and the show had a lot of loose ends and things that never really got brought up again.
I don't know, man. It felt like it was the first draft of a story. I think the main reason why I still get so sad when I think back on the show, is that it had so much potential. It had so many great characters and it had an interesting world, it just didn't quite make it all the way *there*.
I 110% agree with you! It’s kinda sad honestly, it’s like vld created a new kinda emotion for us, an emotion thats like sorrow and disappointment but also nostalgia and joy. It’s so contradictory and conflicting, and yet is the emotion I feel when reminiscing of this show

Its too sad so im not gonna get to into the same exact topic,but i feel like this whenever i think of voltron,its like a whole new set of worlds and places to explore and learn,but then the show just didnt go that far mark to make it as great as it could have been,and i kinda think that like,my own personnal world and characters with their stories and arcs would be the same cus it took me almost my entire life to just set the timeline,ocs and over all the way my ocs interact and are in general,so u can see i just generally suck at this😥,im still working on making sense of the realities/worlds and how they intertwine,trying to not make things too complicated were its fnaf all over again,just not horror this time,but yet not simple enough were its kinda boring and feels like a young kids show were the creators just do shiz and make stuff up cus its not like they expect kids to understand the meaning of a good story in a show,srry,no one wants to read about me just talking about my shiz,but i might start writing down my stuff since i always forget things easly and ive already forgotten a good bit,not taking anymore chaces cus then ill have to re-make smth and it might just be more worse than the original verson of the plot,srry im rambiling,see yall in 30 years where i might finnally do smth with this world thingy of mines,

Yeah I agree and I also feel like her “YOU’RE NOT MY MOTHER” character arc with Hagar was also waisted. Could’ve been a fantastic redemption arc for the both of them. Lotor’s morality never made any sense, which is why I don’t really like him turning back to the dark side or having more sympathetic Season 8 flashbacks. Can the writers just make a good story arc?

3. When he got back he had the emotional range of a toothpick that was tossed around by the writers to help Keith's wonky story line

@@killlerkai18 I'm not gonna lie, ships aren't something I thought about much lol. The characters didn't seem to like each other much by the end of the show (even as friends) so it was a little hard for me to imagine any of them getting into a relationship with one another haha
Honestly :( I know they were kind of forced to bring Shiro back by the producers, but I wish they would've just had the Black Lion teleport Shiro to where Matt was and they could've found him there instead of killing him. And if they wanted to do the clone, it could've just been the one to infiltrate the team and report to Hagar. Did we ever even find out what all the Shiro clones were made for???

Most fans I spoke to agree the first two seasons while with some issues were fun and kept us engaged. What got me was season 3 and onwards it felt like the show was more concerned with upping the plot ante (which was interesting though I have my gripes with how the creators chose to execute it) than maintaining the believable character progressions and interpersonal relationships of the characters that was the heart of the show. The ending was a shit show for sure, but it's hard not to admit the decline happened.
In My opinion, it declined around season 7. Season 6 should have been the finale.

I think the minute they decided to try and make Keith the **main** character when he left for the blades was when everything began to fall apart and the characters connections with each other and their original selves started to deteriorate, because they tried to defy what the whole show was about, the team. When they decided that Keith (no hate to him he’s a good character) was for whatever reason more important than the rest of them, they lost the whole main point of the show and when he comes back it feels like they are trying to convince us that they are still a team with all the crazy upgrades but the dynamic was ruined when he left.
I think I would have been fine with season 3 if they had actually done something with the new positions on the team the characters had.
@@colecuts6948 same, I was annoyed they didn't try to develop new facets of the team's relationship and with their new lions (but also would've been nice if they somewhat gave themselves the opening to play musical lions instead of handwaving it after previously saying they're bonded to specific people).
The paladins' suits not changing to their new colors during the lion switch bothered me so much

Hot take the entire lion switch arc bothered me and I’m not sure how many of my gripes are well grounded and how much is just me being bitter that we didn’t get Black Paladin Lance.
No like changing lions would be so bad alr, like their color schemes suited them so well, but no changing suits after lions make the show confusing asf.

THANK YOU for pointing out the color change!!! The first few seasons had such bright colors, whereas the last few seasons the colors were so bland that they felt boring to look at. I’m a sucker for saturated colors, so it made me sad when they toned to color down.
Lance was done so dirty. Not only did he never get a good character arc like the rest of the characters, he was also treated like crap the entire team. It seems like in every episode the team always calls him "stupid" and or "dumb". Not only that, but they barely tried to show him overcoming his insecurities and becoming more confident. Not to mention he freaking DIED for Allura, and the event was completely unaddressed and Lance was acting completely fine after. It just made no sense. This all made me mad, but the season that got me the most fired up was season 8. He had dreams and aspirations to become a great pilot, and they made a FARMER. Of course, the young Hispanic boy is left to be a farmer, because his only use in the show was comic relief and to be a love interest to Allura. How stereotypical is that??? Everyone else on the show gets a badass, cool ending (excluding Hunk of course >:c) and Lance gets to be a FREAKING FARMER! I'm still in shock over it, I thought Voltron would be a more progressive show, but it wasn't. To me, it only seemed like Pidge, Keith, and Shiro had a good ending. It wasn't perfect, but it was still good. Hunk was left to be a cook (literally what was the point of him going to the Garrison?) and Lance, the Hispanic boy, is left to be a farmer. And Lotor who suffered abuse his entire life and was treated like shit 24/7 died a violent death instead of a redeption arc. Great job, Voltron writers!!!

A good show with an ending that could have been better....that's how I feel about it. I love it, but there were so many things that could have been touched on.
That seems fair. To me, I only really noticed some huge problems in the last season, but the earlier seasons were better in my opinion.

I really fucking loved Lotura, dude. No straight ship has ever made me feel like that. I remember how Lotura transformed the fandom, too... I joined the fandom in December 2017, and I could sense the tension between Klance/Sheith shippers and shaladin/anti-shaladins alike, but after season 5 came out in March 2018, all of a sudden it seemed like it didn’t matter whether you shipped Klance or Sheith. As cheesy as this sounds, it seemed like everyone was united under Lotura. I remember seeing a well-known Klance shipper and anti-shaladin collabing with a Sheith shipper to make a Lotura edit on Instagram. For three months in our fandom, there was peace. It was beautiful lmao. Then the release of season 6 happened in June 2018 and Lotura crumbled. But I’ll always savor those three months when the Voltron fandom knew peace.

Yo, I feel this so much. I loved how happy they were with each other and just, aghhh, they deserved so much better. Lotura fandom is still the only active fanbase of Voltron that I participate in.

So the catradora kiss scene popped up and while I had heard of it, I'm still watching She-Ra and haven't gotten to the episode.
Needless to say I nearly had a heart attack.

For what I heard, Voltron had about half of the story bible when they started. And seeing how other shows made by Dreamworks that are on Netflix, I can presume that they probably have a rushed production and that is why they lost the plot around the middle. But that is speculation
If I remember correctly, there was a leak around the production of season 2 and they had to switch production teams or companies (something like that). The season ended up being half as long as it was supposed to be (maybe the maintain the same release date?). I remember ppl being a bit underwhelmed by season 2, but happy that they were finally getting more content. Though a lot of people, myself included, would've preferred an extended release if it meant more episodes or a better quality. Something I thought was a bit odd was how quickly new seasons updated. Idk how production time differs from live-action tv shows to animated tv shows, but it bugged me bc it felt like maybe was a bit rushed. It didn't help that the series seemed to decline with every new season. This was quite some time ago, and it was around this time that I stopped interacting with much of the fandom, so I could've gotten something wrong.

@@randomuser8574 It's less 8 Seasons in 2 years and more like "8 Seasons" in 2 years. It's like what they did with Netflix She-ra, just took around two episodes worth of seasons and split into multiple short seasons.

It's slow but noticeable. Might be spoilers but the supposed "found family" that was one of the big schticks of the show, yeah they all seem to start drifting from each other as the show continues.
I remember when me and my friend were watching and waiting, i didnt notice anything since i was just binging. I didn’t give Voltron a second thought after awhile when it ended until my brother’s friend (who also watched it) mostly said that it was trash and that two characters got most of the screen time. It didn’t click because one of the two was my favorite from the beginning😔
It wasn’t until season 7 that I was shouting at the tv, so you’ve still got a while
I full on binged it and those first two seasons had me. I could tell the show was just okay around 3-4 but I had troubles figuring out why because all it's problems were what it nailed so well early one.
That really embarrassing because I just started going to uni for this shtuff.
Enjoy it while you can. There's some amazing moments.
Voltron was a great show, it's just that the writers seemed to have some problems when it came to structuring the story and choosing what plot points to follow after season three which made things inconsistent. The Voltron fandom was the first fandom I joined though and it will always hold a big spot in my heart.

I wasn’t a shipper so this show didn’t feel THAT bad to me at the end. Super flawed, but I still enjoyed it. I went in thinking it was gonna be a mecha like Gurren Lagann, but it ended up being Korra in Space... which is fine, but not what I wanted. I watched the whole show years ago and thought “eh, it was ok”. I felt the same way with She-Ra. A lot of these shows get a ton of hate or seem to fall off in quality, but I go into these shows and just see something that is ok at best. Idk.
Idk I personally thought she ra was amazing & had great representation but Voltron was just....depressing.

Ethria never felt like a real place that was in danger because of the Horde but more like a backdrop to the story! I liked the show until the last couple of episodes.
I’m not a shipper either. I tend to ship what becomes an official romance if it’s healthy and builds up properly. Alura and Lance are cute but there wasn’t any build up and it does kind of suck that it seems like Lance is not gonna move on at some point a few years later and be happy. (I think him being a farmer to take a break from the war and trauma is reasonable. Him being stuck there is my problem). Hunk got no character development.
Our girl Allura dies in the stupidest way possible in my view.
I love Xena x Gabrielle from Xena warrior princess cuz they build up until season 3 or 4 and confess and they are soul mates. They fall for other people first and then realise when Xena dies that they are in love and Gabrielle travels mountains to revive Xena. They will reincarnate and meet each other for the rest of eternity. The gods bless Xena with a magic baby and Xena and Gabrielle are both the kids moms. It’s the sweetest shit.
I love Eric and Ariel as a couple cuz we see them get to know each other and there’s this instant bond between them the moment they lock eyes. He looks so pleased every time Ariel is hyper and wanting to experiment and know what things are. Meanwhile, she loves his positive support of her.
Y'know, watching this made me feel like watching Voltron again. I came into the fandom super late, just before the release of s7, I believe. I was absolutely swept into all kinds of ships, headcanons, tons of fanart, etc. I ended up shipping klance and lotura, though after some introspection I realized I shipped klance less because I actually, y'know, saw their dynamic or chemistry or whatever, and more because it was kinda shoved in my face. I shipped lotura mostly because I thought they were nice together, and I would've really liked if Lotor hadn't kept doing 180s, like c'mon guys make up your mind about him. Is he bad or not? -he's neither; he's dead whoops-
The problem is that I have such mixed feelings about the show. I 100% cried at the end (for reasons I still don't really know, looking back), I binged huge chunks of it, I even got the funkos. And I am in fact bummed that a Coran funko wasn't made. Coran was great and deserved a funko. But whenever I talk or even think about the show, all I can think of are the dumbass things that happened. Which really sucks because I remember liking the show so fecking much. (my mom is a huge fan of reminding me how enthusiastic i was about it) Hell, it got me back into drawing stuff, which I hadn't had motivation to do in *years*.
I gotta say though-- that one fight between Keith and Shiro in s6 has to be one of my favorite fights within the show. I got so swept up in it, it was nuts.
I don't mind people being gay in the show, but I would have *ended* the fucking world if klance was a thing. I would have just ended my netflix subscription at that and be over with it.

I'm pretty sure because keeping shiro alive was kind of a last minute decision they hadnt written much of anything for shiro in that season, and it was cutting too close to the release of the season that they just replaced keith with shiro and had keith leave temporarily, and then when keith comes back he never got the development of what he was supposed to get in that season so they kinda just reverse him back to his loner self and basically forget any of the relationships that he had built previously,,, which is why hes kind of an asshole to lance when he first comes back.
Nah season 3 isn't bad, it's just where Voltron starts falling apart. Is what I think people meant. Or rather, the audience was less likely to keep suspending disbelief

I will always argue that the only real problem with the show is the pacing. If every major arc/ status quo change had been given 1 episode more worth of content then every solid explanation as to why things happen as they do wouldn't have to be speculation.
I'm honestly very glad you made this video. I've always felt alone in the opinion that the show wasn't terrible. The interesting thing is that when people actually rewatch it or get into in-depth discussion they usually share that opinion. The fandom's vitriol for the last few seasons just seemingly erased their memories of the good times. So, yeah, it's really refreshing to see a positive outlook on the series after it ended.
No one shows terrible. Just that it went of rails which most analysis agree on. Also I don't think pacing problem whenever people complaining about character arcs and reveals

seasons 1-3 were god teir
seasons 4-6 were still good but the writers lost the plot a bit and it felt a little all over the place
seasons 7-8 was a dumpster trash fire
let me tell you the MOST disappointing moment in the show and the thing that really showed me that the show was gonna crash and burn was episode 6 of season 7. the one where their lions all run out of power and they all get stranded in space together and start fighting. Not only was it the most out of character episode, it showed me that the writers were not interested in developing these characters at all. Like the way they were fighting especially keith and lance it was like they never bonded to begin with! like their development in season 2 + 3 as friends and co-leaders went right out the door! and to have them make up out of nowhere at the end of the episode without actually resolving anything really pissed me off. that kind of episode where they're friendships are strained like that have to be included at the very lastest midway through the show, not a season and a half before the show ends! those kind of episodes are meant to take the characters and put them in stressful situations in order to more clearly expose their individual characters flaws and see where they fall short as a team, so that the rest of the show can spend time fleshing out those flaws and have the characters learn from them. putting an episode like that right near the finale of the show makes it seem like the writers suddenly realized that the team didn't feel like they liked each other and needed an opportunity to show the audience "hey look! these characters are still all friends!! they just had to work out some issues!!" except they never really address anything in the episode and the entire thing seems pointless.
i really loved voltron as it was coming out, got excited and with some showrunners having worked on things like Korra i thought there'd be some good lgbt+ rep and it had so much potential to be such a great show, its just unfortunate that things ended up where they did. i still love the first three seasons and appreciate the show, but it was a real disappointment. I think the writer's first big mistake was switching the lions around, i think it worked for a season but the rest of the show? it just went too far, i love allura as blue paladin, but she had so much more power as the castle ship commander and as the leader along with shiro, her being the blue paladin the rest of the show felt like a downgrade compared to the first two seasons :( the second mistake they made in my opinion was having Keith go off to the blade of mamora, like I get he was supposed to be trying to get in touch with his roots, but it completely changed the dynamic of the cast and ruined the "found family" feeling simply bc the rest of the characters never seem to miss him? unless he's explicitly brought up? it feels way out of character, especially with all the positive character growth he had in season 3 learning to trust and depend on the group.
and i think that's the essence of the disappointment volton brings me. it just didn't live up to expectations and didn't deliver on the things it set up. lance didn't have an arc learning about his self-worth and confidence, keith never learned to rely on and trust others the way he needed to, hunk was reduced to a food loving comedic relief character, Allura never got an arc period even when it would've been great to see her go from a commander who puts the mission to stop zarkon above all else and learn to trust her team and become a better leader, (the white lion plot point???), Lotor deserved an arc abt the abuse he suffered from his father (zuko style), and so so so much more. the show was set up for such great things in those first three seasons and it just fell short of delivering.
i might be disappointed where it ended but i really do cherish a lot of the memories i have of voltron, watching it with friends, the great fanart and theories, klance, etc. and its saddens me to know it will always be known as "that show that could've been great"

I love and hate the "dead in space" ep with a burning passion. the conflict was great, I don't think the timing was off, as all of em were under a lot of stress, but yes the resolve was not good. I love Keith, but the conflict in that part was mostly his fault. yes, he is short tempered, but he should've been held accountable bc he really was a dick. Lance especially should've called him out for his behavior because he had done it before.
tldr;; conflict was great, resolve was bad and out of character.

While there were good episodes, the continuity was flimsy, they did almost nothing of merit with what they had. Which is what pissed most of the fandom off. It wasn't that it wasn't good, it just could have been Fantastic. And they missed that chance.

ive always felt left out as I never really hated it where everyone else in the fandom did. I've never been sure if I actually enjoyed the show all the way through or if it was the fact that regardless of what I wanted, it quickly became my special intrest and I still have fond memories because of it. I actually quite liked them being able to go back to earth regardless of the things I think couldve been done differently.

I just watched Legendary Defender for the first time 2 weeks and I never thought it was bad. I remembering watching the original on Boomerang when I was kid. Legendary Defender seemed like a great tribute to the original.

As someone who loved Voltron with my whole heart and regard it as one of my favorite shows ever, it's so refreshing to see this video come up in my reccommended and I highly enjoyed the trip down memory lane that this video provided. I feel like people often forget how much we all enjoyed Voltron before it got "bad". I've always been unhappy with what they did (especially as a hardcore lance stan lol) but i've never been able to condemn it completely as it means way too much to me for that. Glad to see there are others who share the same sentiment.

Watching this video made me emotional for a multitude of reasons. Like many others, Voltron was my first experience with an active fandom, I can vividly remember the joy that was watching a new trailer or a panel about Voltron and going on any social media to see other's thoughts on it, it was refreshing and fun. The last season was hard for me, especially because of personal factors. The same day the last season came out, was the day I found out I would have to move to another state, about 3,000 kilometers away. Before all that, Voltron was one of the few things keeping me from being anxious and nervous all the time, it was one the things that kept me connected to some of my friends. December 14, 2018, I remember sitting on my bed, watching that last scene, as soon as the screen went black, my father came into my room and told me it was official, that we would have to move out. I was so confused, scared and, mostly, sad. Man, I wish I could go back to my, now demolished, old house. I wish I could go back to my old school. I wish I could see my family more than just once a year. I wish my way to contact my friends wasn't late night discord calls. I wish I was there when my kitty passed away. And mostly, I wish life wasn't as horrible as it is now. If only I could go back and watch Voltron with the same excitement, seeing all the new stuff coming out. Do you remember when that voltron book came out, and people's only conclusion was that Keith was obssessed with hipoppotamus?

Honestly, S7 and S8 have beautiful moments I like to rewatch but it all started going downhill after S5 in my case.
But damn if I didn't watch it the moment it came out because, at the time; I was fully invested into Voltron.

I think my problem with Season 3 wasn't even the lion switch itself, but the fact Keith got the Black Lion when it would've been much more meaningful if it had gone to Allura - she's the princess and the tactical master, the lions are her family
