Raye’s tweets about how budget affects writing was something I had learned in animation classes. I studied under people who’ve worked on Cartoon Network and they used to tell me that budgets are VERY important for every aspect of the animation process and production. Budgets are important for schedules, paying animators, voice actors, outsourcing and so on. If you’re working for a big studio that gives you a small budget, chances are you’re being rushed to make this project as quickly as possible, so doing rewrites or going back to fixing issues in the animation become harder to do. Weebs are fine excusing when it happens to anime, but because it happens in a show that’s kinda gay, they have no problems shitting on it. I didn’t like HGS all that much, I thought it was kinda ok just not good, but everything Raye said about their show being low budget and rushed was obvious to anyone who’s ever studied or even researched animation. They were 100% right about everything they wrote. All the people saying that they’re wrong or untalented have clearly never had to work under pressure to get something done as fast as possible and have zero knowledge of how ruthlessly uncaring the animation industry is.

Budget is so important for a show and how it looks and feels in the end. I work in animation on the production side and it’s a real eye opener to how shows get made. Also anime is bad at paying its animators shit to where ppl can’t even afford to eat food for a couple days. Like, is that what y’all want? Do you want ppl dying on the job because they are so overworked? Cuz that has happened. A LOT goes into making a show, and even more in trying to make a good one. Budget is one of them.

I watched uniquenameosaurus's video and I rly have gripes with his "diversity-neutral" argument for representation in media. A black character in a cartoon doesn't have to have an interesting self-reason to exist in a story, same for High Guardian Spice's trans character. His holes in his arguments are that *audiences like to see people who look/are like them in their media,* and that for any arbitrary influence any internal Thermian-argumentative lore can just be labeled as uninteresting by anyone and then suddenly the representation is "forced". It's just a bizarre stance to me, the onus of why representation is not on representative characters. There's a connection to the real world with real people who consume media. It's up to the people creating media to allow their content to reach people who find your characters relatable. This is a storyteller's job, not their character's job. Let people exist, don't wait for an interesting reason to not gatekeep identities from media.

JUST STOP critiqued the show's writing, its extensive use of red blood despite it being fantasy creatures or creatures that are bugs (Which don't typically have RED blood), and at one point made a salient, non-transphobic critique of the trans character in the show. Not that their transness was an affront to the culture war or anything, but that it felt like they /babied/ the watcher into what being trans is with a talk, rather than just having it be something in the background which is easily inferred and canon. Accepted, even.
Also, the fact that it's "High Guardian Spice" yet they're all named after herbs... missed opportunity there, methinks... regardless. The Quartering and VARIOUS other youtubers like him (whether they too have pissed in their basement to spite their wife or not) need to understand the difference between CRITICISM and CANCELLING.
Because LOOOOOOOORD fucking knows that the moment the tide turns against them, they use that shield. "I'M BEING CANCELLED BY THE LEFT FOR MY TAKES ON THIS SHOW", but when they go on a rant about how /actually/ if you think about it, High Guardian Spice is actually a display of western society degenerating or whatever because the show wasn't made by japan.
Harassment isn't criticism. And criticism isn't cancelling.
TL;DR ('cause that was a lot and I'm sorry kiss kiss) If you're going to criticise a show, you can't do it from the sidelines, being gross and horrible to the creators and not expect pushback. That's shitty. You'd be shitty in that instance.

Eh... I don't mind shows blatantly explaining stuff like what being trans is just because I know alot of people are ignorant about trans people and can easily miss it, which can lead to people even denying that these characters are lgbtq in the first place, which honestly is just so annoying. Honestly, with the way shows like voltron messed up with how they depicted their gay characters I'm loving these new shows just being blatant as hell and having dudes just straight up saying "I'm gay!" If their outright just having theses characters just blatantly saying their trans I'm not even mad, I'm kinda tired of having these things confirmed off screen.

@Oblivion 1 The difference is instead of writing a trans character to just be like "Oh yeah, I'm trans" and have the other character to go "oh that's cool" and leave it at that which shows that transness is real, it's accepted, we stan, instead it's dragged out.
Crunchyroll isn't going to have children on it. It isn't going to have 2010's steven universe child fans on it (godbless that series my god).
You know what audience crunchyroll DOES have? Idiots. And not just KID idiots, I mean ADULT idiots. The kind who think having a trans character (poorly introduced OR NOT) isn't acceptable and is "indoctrination". THAT'S the audience.
Of _course_ LGBTQ+ rep is excellent and we _love_ that! But the more boss move would be to have them go "Oh yeah I'm trans" and have that accepted, instead of "Oh, I'm trans! That means I-" etc etc.

Also Spider-Man debatably is a self insert character. Co-creator Steve Ditko put a lot of himself into the character. To answer the question seriously. The issue with self inserts is at people have realized that they can very easily become a way for the writer to:
      a) Talk down to the viewers about particular points of view.
b)Live out a wish Fulfillment fantasy where they're the second coming of Christ and everyone they don't like is evil.
Because of this people intend to view self inserts as bad. Especially in a show that is political.
I see Peter Parker being used as a example. The thing is,while yes Parker does intend to attract beautiful women,it doesn't change the fact that his life kinda sucks.(Inability to whole down a job,his superhero responsibilities putting a strain on his relationships with the mentioned beautiful woman e.t.c).Which makes the wish fulfillment aspect of his stories less jarring.
To be clear.I'm not arguing HGS falls into this failings.Havent seen the show myself.I just want to point out that their are legit reasons for people to be wary of self insert characters

Interesting how self inserts only really happen to be a major issue for people when it comes to “woke” things they disagree with. Even just within anime when people say Shinji is a self insert or inspired by the creator, people praise the show even more.
On the other hand, I remember when the DC “I’m not starfire” spin-off graphic novel came out and everyone was using the mc allegedly being a self insert along with fatphobic and homophobic comments as their “criticism” for the story. I have some issues with that graphic novel but idk why the mc being queer, fat, or a self insert/inspired by the author should be one of them.
Same goes for this show and shows like steven universe and spop. There are things to criticize (even about the creators and how they handled things within their shows - especially regarding treatment of characters of colour) but the mere inclusion of queer rep or characters inspired by creators isn’t one of them.

I can get down with and respect the opinions of people who don’t like High Guardian Spice, but I’ve seen so many people use it as a way to say diverse shows and any form of diversity in fiction are inherently bad. Seeing as many of the people who have made critiques of this show typically make videos surrounding anime, I notice that certain types of anime-related media can also be just as bad as HGS, but can still have an almost cult-like following so long as they don’t promote themes like diversity and inclusion, which (unfortunately) made this particular show and its creators an easy target.

Yeah... You don't have people out there talking about the poorly animated parts of Dragonball Super like it ate their firstborn child. When a big show has crappy dialogue, it gets memed, or most likely, ignored, then everyone moves on. These things only come up like this when addressing diverse shows to the point where it's almost just a dog whistle.
The bar for diversity is set *impossibly* high. And then if a show does the impossible and clears it anyway, the goalposts just get moved to whatever arbitrary measure that's suddenly able to make it seem like a "failure".
Shit, if we had honest equality there'd be just as many queer bad shows as there are "straight" ones (or insert any other underrepresented category in there). Can't I just enjoy the dumb bad show where I actually exist in in peace? Maybe I don't wanna watch the Citizen Kane of Diversity. Maybe I wanna watch the Austin Powers equivalent.

I think the main reason it can't be bad is because it sets an example to other companies that have the power to fund these diverse shows. All HGS has to show to these companies is that diverse shows are more likely to fail in the market. That is why I think that it is so important to nail something innovative like this because it sets an example in the industry. I don't think diverse shows are bad, the owl house remains to be one of my favorite shows, but screwing something up like this is going to hurt future diverse shows as they are going to be even harder to green light with this piece of media as a prime example of what could happen to their show. Just a heads up, im not an anime fan and I've watched very little, so don't mistake this as a salty weeb rant, im just genuinely concerned for the future of diverse shows. the only thing i've seen about this show that i actually have a problem with, if it's actually true, is that Crunchyroll took money from subscriptions that they claimed would go back to animation teams and studios in Japan but instead made their own studio and are now pushing out original properties which are overall pretty substandard. which is a scummy thing to do and my opinion of the company wasn't great to begin with, but again, that's Crunchyroll not the HGS team.
everything else that could constitute as "valid criticism" for HGS has already been said: writing isn't good and production schedule was a mess. everything else is just people jumping on a hate hype train to bash LGBT+ people YET AGAIN for daring to try and provide more rep for ourselves in a grossly oversaturated industry

Crunchyroll does have an issue with underpaying translators (among other things), but the original productions were funded by third-party investors, NOT by the money people pay directly.

Definitely agree. While I did find some videos to come out of the firestorm to be actually good for criticism instead of just completely jumping on the hate train, the hate was definitely overblown. The big issue I had was one of the writers blowing off/excusing their past kill all men comments as being “Tumblrpilled”. I’ve more or less been an active Tumblr user since around 2012/2013. You start off as a blank dash and have to actively seek out blogs/content to follow to create your dash. Essentially, you curate your own experience. So for them to act like it wasn’t their fault for those comments pissed me off. Do I think people needed to dig up those old comments and demand answers/apologies/whatever? Absolutely not. But pushing all the blame onto Tumblr when you were the one following those blogs is just avoiding responsibility and a chance to reflect on your former and current self and your actions.

Absolutely dude. I've clowned on HGS clips multiple times, I will confess, but I was also not surprised to find out the team behind it got screwed on the budget. The producers left them holding the bag for their higher-ups being 2K Games levels of awful. And even if we had third-party investors actually paying for the show, I'd still blast Crunchyroll for putting the team in a bad spot. With that one promo video they did early in production, CR didn't even wait long enough to get anything past concept art and storyboards to show off. What were they thinking???

After seeing videos of criticism about High Guardian Spice that's essentially thinly disguised complaints about "wokeness", I'm really glad this exists. I think the show needs a remake and a better structure of storytelling and worldbuilding, and people who highlight its problems are valid. I can't say the same for grievances regarding characters being LGBTQ+ and progressive though, because the argument honestly loses all credibility if that's all they can express critique about.

As someone who often adds some LGBTQ stuff in my stories, not for inclusion but for realism, and who dream to make my own cartoon, when I saw all the criticism about High Guardian Spice, I was so scared. I didn’t really liked this show too but it was mainly because of the plot that wasn’t attractive to me. And when I saw everyone hating on this show I was like: Man, what if my cartoons get hated too ? What if people criticize me for being « woke » ? What if I end up like High Guardian Spice ?
Same with a lot of cartoons and movies I really liked but that people hated, such as SpieZ, Turning Red, the Air Buddies etc…I felt like I was in the wrong for liking them and maybe that if I liked these « trash », then maybe the cartoons I was writing were also destined to be trash.
So because of that, I tried to make it perfect to the point where I started to lose confidence in myself because I felt like even with improvement, my cartoon idea wasn’t good enough and that people will hate me and my cartoon if I show it like that.

Gonna take a quote from my blog post that touched on this:
"Beyond the blatant misunderstanding on what the hell criticism actually is, this shows the worst kind of entitlement among so-called animation enthusiasts. It's one thing to dislike a show or point out faults of its, that is completely reasonable and people like Raye aren't calling that out. The problem is specifically using that bias to justify 'looking down' on the crew members, even if subconsciously, and distrusting whatever insight they try to give. Sure, we've had a fair share of creators who haven't reacted the best to these things, but there really is a lot that goes on in the entertainment world that we wouldn't understand, so most likely they'd know what they are talking about; things can indeed not turn out well even if budgets weren't a problem, and people have indeed done better with less, but it's never one size fits all - not that he deserves being approached with such extreme attitudes even if he's wrong anyway. And they seriously wonder why the professionals get upset and decide they don't want anything to do with them..."

can i rant about something real quick? i was seething on twitter when this first blew up, bc at first everyone was only talking about that scene where the teacher says to the main girl that he's trans. and just the sheer amount of CISGENDER people deciding whether this was good representation or not when they actually couldn't give two shits about trans issues in real life. and then there were the cis people re-writing the scene to make it "better". good god did it grind my gears, so many of these supposed superior re-writes literally just had him being like "i uSed tO be a GirL bUt nOw i'm a gUy", and intentionally leaving him saying the word transgender out because apparently it's just "too woke" to say a literal fucking adjective. it's an absolute slap to the face to the creator who literally wrote that scene AS a trans person. do i think that scene was a little on the nose and could have been written more nuanced and emotional? yeah, i do. but i respect that's how the creator wrote that scene in his personal experience, and it wasn't by any means "bad" rep. in fact, it was very nice hearing hearing a cartoon character actually say the word transgender instead of some kind of vague phrasing.

    • @psiah9889
      @psiah9889 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Honestly, it was very accurate to my lived experiences. When we talk about these things we use the words that describe them. We don't dance around them. Nor do we break into an epic soliloquy about our past experiences. It's pretty much:
"Why do you look like that in that old picture?"
"Oh. Um... It's because I'm trans."
And usually it ends there, but if there's someone who doesn't understand it, I'm happy to explain. And that explanation isn't generally a long thing, but something like "people thought I was a boy but I wanted to be a girl, so now I am."
And that's basically the scene. An excerpt from real life. Maybe phrased different than I would have, but like, a conversation like that doesn't involve a consultation with professional speech writers. But holy hell does that scene get a lot of focus and hate.

I think that if over the course of the series we learned more about being trans in a magical world instead of dumping all the info in one scene, that would’ve been better. I still without a doubt would have him say I’m trans. No implication or sugarcoating, I want to leave no room for doubt.
But it is so upsetting to see how many likes those comments got. Statistically some of those like would have to be trans people as well and all I can think is “why?😩 why would you as a trans person like this. The show definitely wasn't high quality, but I'm glad there's actually a video (this and a few others) not bashing it relentlessly or reacting to it negatively, but rather how it could have been better or empathizing. It's almost like Crunchyroll wanted it to fail simply by deciding to put it on its platform. I truly think that if this was the same exact show but on Disney or Netflix, the outrage wouldn't have been as huge as it was. Creators that leech off of making fun of certain groups/things had a field day with this series, and it's sad. I admittedly did indulge in some of these type of videos early on but it gets so repetitive and mean spirited just for the sake of it. Also thank you Joe for calling out Hero Hei. He's the peak of this problem tbh. You know he's bad when even rev says desu does the bare minimum with the Nagatoro VA vid but he doesn't.

My problem is that Chrunchyroll is paying pennies to their translators (and aparently, also their show creators). So, why not pay more money to them, give them better work conditions? Crunchy sold the service saying they would send the money to Japan so that they have better working conditions. But instead decided to make a show and being cheap at it. But atealst the creators from HGS got unionized and got more money to make a new show (Onlix Equinox) that I kinda wanna watch.

Critiquing works is one thing, but translating that energy into attacking people for no other reason but just for working on that content is another. Guardian Spice is a terrible and misguided show, but the vitriol aimed against its creators is *even worse.* It’s petulant, repulsive, reckless, and irredeemable behavior. If there’s one thing I learned from art school, it’s this: Don’t be monsters during critiques, people. Criticize the paper’s content, not the person holding the paper.

@Logan Roof News Sorta agree on subjectivity of art. But as someone who went through Art College, I disagree hard on limits to corporate-level art. Art is subjective, but so is criticism. Limiting which work to criticize and not inspires close-mindedness and elitism, as if one side of art is beyond reproach. Criticism, as harsh and painful it can be, can yield potential for an artist to grow. Otherwise what’s the point of improving when you receive nothing but praise? Sure, Almost every piece of art has merit to them, but they’re just as open to criticism. You can’t have the positive without the negative. You can’t have the approval without the disapproval.

It's always bothered me to no end how people who hated this show felt the need to direct their hatred for Kate Leth's men-hating tweets towards Raye Rodriguez (the creator) as if he said all those things, or otherwise act smug and then pretend they won after getting blocked. Also, while there was definitely replies like "cope and seethe" directed towards Raye on that post about "the budget" being to blame for why HGS fell, he was also blocking people who actually were giving *genuine criticism* and were even criticizing Crunchyroll itself without giving any criticism to the people who worked directly on the show. ive been thinking my opinions on this show over for quite a while. back when it was first announced i thought all the hate was making a big deal of nothing but when it came out i noticed that it wasn't the best?? but honestly nothing to get mad over. it's bad, sure, but its HARMLESS bad. something that people don't have to get into massive twitter arguments over or go out of their way to get blocked by the creator.
i always hear artists say "whatever you do, DON'T give your childhood passion project to a big studio." and I'm starting to see why that's such good advice. if this was a webcomic/series people would eat. that. UP. they'd LOVE it. but since it's being made by professionals people think they have the right to harass those involved and its just an awful way of handling something that really doesn't affect your life in any way.
i normally hate saying this, but if you don't like it, you are absolutely free to just not watch it and ignore it.
