This is so hard to understand. My brother and my oldest child are trans, and this RCTA stuff seems exactly the same as biological essentialism. They aren't dudes because they have Y chromosomes, they are dudes because that's how they express gender. Being into another culture doesn't seem to be the goal here because they want to be regarded as a different nationality instead of just expressing the culture or beauty standards that resonate with them. Trying to manifest being Japanese is like trying to manifest different chromosomes-you're looking in the wrong place for what you want, and it's not ethical to ask people to go along with it using that kind of language of inclusion.

Perhaps this isn't my place to say, especially as a white person, but the thing that really bugs me about this is that it's literally just racism. It's about scooping the quote unquote "Attractive" bits off of the top of other races and cultures and parading them as your own. It's literally just appropriation.
It's deeply racist to assume that, for instance, Japanese people (going to use Japanese people as an example most since it seems like they're the ones being made into caricatures most here, but this goes for all other races as well) are all pale and cute and talk in a squeaky voice and have monolids.
It entirely ignores the many Japanese people that don't have those features at all, because it's not (and I mean this with all the disgust in my heart) "Popular." Anime and Kpop and Jpop, and what have you, are all super popular here in the U.S., and I would assume everywhere else too. Wanting to emulate your idols as a teen is a normal thing to do. Many people had an embarrassing weeaboo phase in middle school.
The thing about this, though, is that what's happening is that popular asian people are boiled down into a homogenous mixture with no defining characteristics that differentiate them as human beings. Asian people just going about their day are being harassed by these RCTA people, and it's very similar to kin drama in that someone is taking the face of another person they view as a "Character" and wearing it to try and put words to something they believe represents them internally, with the exception that fictional characters cannot be harmed by someone relating to them to the extreme because they aren't real, because they are Created for the purpose of relating to some kind of audience, or telling a story that people can think about and relate to.
Asian folks are not created and designed in some studio to be relatable. They're not plot devises in a story to explain some human thought process or entertain the masses. They're literally just people. They can feel hurt by having their photos taken without their consent and used for whatever reason in an online space. It's literally dehumanizing!!
It's taking a human person and treating them like a concept, where the things they're supposed to have sole ownership over are being stripped away by (mostly) white folks who feel like they don't have a culture of their own, but want to just lazily steal someone else's identity instead of going and forging their own path and using their own face. It upholds racist ideas about certain people being inherently inferior because of their skull shape, skin color, eye shape, etc.
Every culture, every place, every individual is different from those around them, no two people are exactly alike, so to liken yourself to a caricature of a group of people, but only the ones you feel are desirable, ignoring any of the tidbits you don't like or care about, is really and truly disgusting. The fact that the subliminal asian video shown above seemed to just be sped up clips of anime girls speaking in Japanese is beyond repulsive.
I genuinely hope these people grow out of whatever this is, or at the very least unlearn the racism they're clinging so hard to and address the issues they're having with White Culture at large that makes them want to run away screaming. If you idolize a kpop star or an actor or love an anime character, it's absolutely okay to be honest and say you think they're cool, and wear things that remind you of them, but to LARP as an Asian Person™, or more accurately what you IMAGINE an Asian Person™ is like, is incredibly hurtful.
It's the same juvenile nonsense as pulling at the corners of your eyes and going "hurr hurr look guys I'm Asian now, look at how squinty my eyes are," and then poorly making sounds you'd assume are Asian (I still hear kids call Chinese the "ching chong language") without any clue about how to speak said language, nor what the words mean. In school I remember an asian friend of mine being bullied that way.
Just because you're doing it because you think it's "cool" doesn't mean that it isn't hurting anyone, far from it in fact. Sorry for the rant, I apologize if I didn't use the right words in places, and I hope my point has gotten across anywho.
If you've read this far you're awesome and congrats on the attention span, genuinely.

You dove into absolutely everything here, doofnoof, tysm from a burmese person! It makes me sad how the white ppl here identifying as other races don’t think they have a culture of their own when they very much do. I have a friend in uni coming from Japan who’s really invested in British culture atm and we’re throwing a bday celebration for her revolving around some aspects of that, and it’s so heartwarming to see everyone think about what they grew up with. Seeing the majority of the RCTA community trying to achieve what is basically a beauty standard wrongly conflated with being asian honestly just shows how much people, as you say, simply want to be viewed as more aesthetically pleasing, but also therefore moving up the social hierarchy because they’ve seen our society’s change in behaviour to those who are able to keep up with the beauty standard. The racism those in the RCTA community perpetuate seems to be fuelled by their refusal to study other cultures on a deeper level, and their refusal to deconstruct the social hierarchies they so desperately want to climb up.

I’ve been studying it for years since my dad lived there when he was younger and I’ve been hearing stories most of my life, and my older sister is moving to Japan in a few years because it’s where her husband is getting stationed. I’m studying the language and do deep dives on the culture itself on a regular basis. I could not imagine pretending to be Japanese online or trying to “turn” Japanese. If anyone needs more details on the difference between race and gender
Gender is a thing you develop into, you only really develop a gender identity as you grow up.
people may treat you as a particular gender, but that is done based off of assumptions about internal aspects of your character that they frankly have no means of actually deducing, especially when you're younger.
Race meanwhile is a thing you inherit, not neccessarily in the genetic sense (the biology of genetic inherritance vs the subject of race as a social identity is too complicated for me to explain/understand tbh) but it is something you get from your parents and family, and as such, it's a thing that influences you before you are even born
Both are experienced very differently, and the dynamics around how both affect your life so different that trying to compare one to the other would drastically obscure the complexities and nuance of both

as a trans person myself, I find the comparisons to people like this to be really frustrating for a number of reasons. For starters, rcta stuff is always inherently racist, as it by definition involves someone trying to embody racial stereotypes, which then reinforce these negative stereotypes and cause genuine harm. This kind of thing just enforces the institution of race itself and reduces real people to nothing but a set of traits that can be acquired or mimicked, and for this reason it is inherently racist and unethical. Transgender stuff on the other hand is entirely different, as for one thing it does not itself inherently play on or derive itself from harmful stereotypes, and instead it is based on internal identity and expression. Not only that, but in allowing for ways to express gender beyond a conventional binary and beyond established norms surrounding genders, it allows for people to create their own niches and find their own way to live, thus actively working against the ways in which the construct of gender controls people. In short, rcta is actively harmful to people and enforces unethical concepts and institutions, whereas trans does not cause harm and instead helps people by working to dismantle unethical institutions and concepts.

    • @InfernalEnby
      @InfernalEnby 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

I've been thinking about this more and wanted to add a couple of things: Gender is not a thing you are but rather a series of things you do. Gender is a series of actions one performs within a given context, which when combined creates an image of gender. Race on the other hand is something that is done to you. You have no control over how people treat race, and race as a concept is something that is applied rather than expressed. And so for trans people to change how they express gender is exactly that: changing how they express gender. But with RCTA people, they aren't changing any sort of expression but rather instead they are themselves enforcing race on other people. Basically since you cannot change how race applies to you, they are then trying to conform to racist stereotypes, which in turn applies race to people which is quite harmful. Some of this I already kind of said, I just wanted to stress the importance of identity as being applied by an outside force or being something expressed by an individual

@@cladlless idk the concept of face-claiming an alter is just kind of weird to me because I know there are mfs who lie about having DID for the sake of being quirky and it's all too easy for those types to just say that they have their favourite character as an alter.
I'm open to the fact that I may simply be ignorant but I don't see any...like..medical or psychological benefit to being able to face-claim in the context of DID outside of romanticization. Mainly because I'd think that alters - like any other individual identity - are maintained by the self rather than an external visual to project onto?
Open to being wrong though, I'm fr not trying to be hostile.

Faceclaim is a word used by people with Dissociative Identity Disorder, a faceclaim is a picture of how an alter looks like inside the inner world, it can be a drawing or a picture of a real person that just happens to look like them. It's DISGUSTING how the RCTA community distorted the meaning like that.

Faceclaim is what role players use for OCs, actually. The online DID community took the term from role players technically. It’s still WEIRD that they’re claiming peoples faces as their own though.. I’m fine with it for OC’s but it’s really weird to act like that’s your face when it isn’t in order to ‘race change.’ Weird af

Whatchu want me to show you my ancestry DNA results? I don't know nobody in my family that ain't black so me showing you my results wouldn't change the fact that I'm just black.

Regarding the cultural thing in the beginning tiktok: Dude you can just move and adopt a new culture if you really want to. You will always have a cultural background of course, but I think if you live somewhere for a long time and adopt a local language, you can absolutely add cultural things from your new home to your personality *organically*. A white Canadian from Nova Scotia can move to New Mexico (Big L) and live there for a long time and absolutely become a white American and a Nova Scotian (IMO). Culture is more fluid than people give it credit for. That said, because race is a dumb fuck concept, it's based on our phenotypes.

I'm mixed race. I'm White, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander and it does suck that other mixed race people who are also white feel they need to be anything but white so they do shit like this. But at the same time, most these mf should know better and idk, GO TO THERAPY AND TALK ABOUT IT?!?!?!?! Like bro you don't have to look a certain way to validate your race. Furthermore all your doing is caricaturizing your own racial identity and others like what?!?! And this part goes for everyone, if you hate your own race, I think there's something else going on lmao. Fr get help, talk to a friend about it, maybe join a support group idk, just don't get lost in the sauce on this.

I want to imagine the root cause of this is like, youth being envious of other cultures they aren't a part of, mainly because I was a kid who watched anime and was like "woah anime is real and Japan is SO COOL" and wanting that to be the sorta thing I was surrounded by instead of what I was surrounded by. But none of that shit explains any of this extra weird shit like face claiming or trying to subliminally change your race, which even after watching this video I do not understand what the logic of that is, seeing as the shit shown has them attributing race to physical characteristics, yet somehow they're going to trick their minds to become more like their desired race? Honestly this whole thing is just super messed up, did not know this shit was going on, hopefully someone slips like a single molecule of self-awareness into their water supply and it all just ends the next day as they realize how weird as hell they were being.

I actually speak some Japanese. Allow me to give my translation of the thing at about 7:00
It appears to say “Are you able to accept my claim?”
(the reason GT thought it said “I” is because Japanese often omits words like “I” and “you” when it can be implied, and GT usually defaults to “I”.)
The original person definitely plugged it into GT also, because that is not how you make a request. When it says “can you” it means “is it possible” not “would you please”, like they probably intended.

As a quarter-asian and 3/4 white dude with some Hispanic ethnicity in there (who passes as full white until I tell people I'm mixed and they be like "oh yeah I see it now shi qing fu lao"), it felt nice to get that reassurance that I'm not like these loser posers trying to be something they're not. I identify a lot with my Asian heritage, especially since I don't know any of my Hispanic family and grew up really close with my Asian grandparent. My situation has always made me feel like a poser or an outsider so it was just really nice to feel recognized for once.

I remember talking back in highschool with a coworker who was arguing for this sort of thing in comparison to the trans community as like. Devil's advocate sort of thing. Because he was an asshole and trying to dehumanize trans ppl by comparing them to a topic he considered ridiculous. Frustrating that this is a legit thing people do... Gotta love when people pick and choose what they like about a minority group and co-opt it / fetishize it and then continue to harass and discriminate against people of that same minority. Anyway I liked this format where you mix up being on camera and your usual visual edits... looks really cool and your bedroom design is awesome

Honestly, with the number of the times this exact thing has happened - young people making a community or trend their personality because of identity issues, wanting to fit in, loneliness etc. - I’m not even phased by this.
But I do hope we’ll eventually get to a point where children/teens feel comfortable and happy enough with themselves that they don’t feel like they have to do stuff like this to be “part of the crowd”. I feel like a lot of these are a cry out for attention they’re not getting from their parents or school, which is pretty sad.

This reminds me of something i was taught before exiting religion. When i was a kid in church we were told a story of a young white girl who was born with brown eyes like her dad instead of the blue ones her mom had. She resented this until her family went on a mission trips and her mom couldn't get people to stop and listen as she looked very foreign. Skipping a bunch of conversations and stuff: the little girl became grateful of her brown eyes and used coffee to stain her skin in order to build trust. Her family and the church were so thankful to her for helping the mission success.
