I'm an old nerd. We called good gatekeeping a "quality filter" or "HQG" (High-Quality Gate). Do whatever it takes to make your scene/fandom/whatever welcoming to good prospective homies, and kick the crud to the curb. If you don't, the poisonous people make it impossible for the cool, quiet people to hang out. They'll just drift away.
That's what happened to 90% of the fps genre, like COD, but also cod suffers from pro-warcrime-itis so it was destined to happen

I feel like there's a difference between throwing out bad community members and "gatekeeping." They technically mean the same thing but one is clearly for the health of the community like throwing out racist/groomers/sexists/anti-lgbt/etc, and then racist/groomers/sexists/anti-lgbt/etc throwing out normal people from said community

I do think there's also other instances, like keeping away someone that get easily disturbed from easily disturbing shows. Don't show something that will trigger your friend trauma just cuz you want them to experience the show you watched, they will do just fine without watching it lol
In that instance I think you should just tell them the name of the thing, but also mention that it contains those disturbing elements and that they just straight up shouldn't watch it.

You should gatekeep special little stores if they carry something that you'd know would get scalped immediately, for example I know a place that has monster high dolls for retail price out in the middle of nowhere. I will admit I used to gatekeep artists like Jack stauber, joji, and Nujabes because I genuinely didn't want to hear the music I loved so much be turned into Tik Tok noises but then I saw some of the people that used their songs and audio bits to make some really cool art fan music videos and Cosplay stuff and I got over it.
