things I forgot to point out I wish I did:
allura literally wasn’t even that much of a love interest until lotura was starting to be a thing and even a little bit after. lance was flirty with every woman and allura wasn’t really seriously special to him until the writers made it that way.
also there are so many times where the paladins call him a goofball and doubt his abilities and when he does something impressive they’re baffled. this pisses me off because 1, literally all of them have been training, why would it be any different for him, and 1, hunk also cracks jokes as much as lance does arguably even more, but they don’t constantly doubt his ability, and when lance does he’s “the goofball”. the lack of respect he has for just being himself puts me in a gay rage.
I agree with you. I think the entire team doubted lance because they thought that he wasn’t taking anything seriously. In the episode where they basically play dungeons and dragons, lance is the one who asks why are none of the members training or doing anything, and shiro replies: we’re just having a little fun. Lance has shown that he has the abilities to step up and lead but he’s held back in favor of Keith or shiro. Allura being a love interest for lance, lotor, or even Keith (honestly I don’t know why the writers even tried to make that happen since it happened in the original) also made her character feel flat compared to everyone else even Coran!

@@cynicalducky1041, gods as a fan of all of those( except for Riverdale as I haven't seen the series) reading those give me pain as my favourite characters get such awful things for them in the writing department for example the creator of Miraculous Ladybug doesn't think bullies can change thus basically ruins any chance of redemption my favourite character has even though he made a redemption route that goes nowhere for some reason, and with RWBY all the characters give my favourite character so much flack for just existing when they're trying their hardest... and even ignoring that the other characters are just a mess, agony.
To be fair though, the fandom will almost always be able to write to show better than the actual creators as they're bigger, and have multiple chances to do so, and can target many different people's tastes for example fluff, angst, etc. y'know?

I can summarize my feelings on how Lance was treated with one source: the VR game. You play as Lance, and the whole damn time, everyone is yelling at you and berating you.
Or here's a moment everyone will know about. Everyone picked another member of the team to escape the game show. They all go down the line and say great things about each other. Keith says he just "doesn't want to be stuck here forever with Lance". I know it's supposed to be funny, but when Lance is constantly worried about not being needed/wanted, they never showed him that he was wrong about that.
ESPECIALLY after making Keith say Lance was an important and reliable member of the team
its so absurd how they make you play as lance and don't realize how much he's berated

I took the gameshow bit as keith not wanting to say he cared cause he's got a case of the Socially Awkward(tm), me and my friends do the same thing lmao. Instead of saying ilyt back or anything I call them a stinky pickle
Though on the other side it comes off to me as when your friends do this too much to you / if they tease you when you're in the wrong mood. At that point it ends up being actually upsetting. Given lance's issues and how much they're teasing him/putting him on blast I GUARANTEE you that's what's happening with him. Ive also been in that situation a lot and I can confirm that they don't want to / don't realize that theyre hurting you but standing up for yourself is hard because it makes things less casual + kills the mood :/

Lance was literally what got me into the show. He was immediately entertaining and kept me watching, but I lost interest when he and other characters were under used and barely had any genuine interactions with each other

I really, really, really thought black paladin lance was coming. All the signs were there, his ideas that he wasn't good enough for the team despite his obvious capabilities, the character arc I thought he was going to go through not shown yet, going back to earth to see his family to maybe get the confidence he needed... I had been waiting for seasons and then to not see it?? I was on the verge of tears.
@@ginadavis7331 iverson yelled at him for being a bad leader in the first episode & any other normal story would have lance defy expectations and become the leader that people didn't think he could have been and closed that arc. instead iverson apologies to keith for some reason and lance's contribution is ignored.

I mean really, we begin the series with Lance being the de facto leader of the garrison trio and him desperately wanting to prove himself. Black Paladin Lance feels like a very sensible progression of that arc.
Like, his whole beef with Keith at the beginning was that Lance just desperately wanted to be recognized but Keith (by accident) ended up being the one in that spotlight every time. His "rivalry" thing was just that he felt like he was stuck in Keith's shadow. And it feels like the story never properly addresses that characterization or resolves that plot point. (Which could be said for a lot of things in this show, but let's not get into that.) Really the worst part of all of this is they established so many fascinating pieces of characterization and story and most of them were just never taken anywhere, which wouldn't bother me so much if the way they resolved the main plot was actually satisfying or cathartic at all, but it just felt very frustrating and disjointed, so all I have is disappointment.

If we're talking about Allura and Lance's relationship though, at one point Lance had kinda stoped outwardly flirting and crap. Allura came to Lance only after the whole Lotor mess.
Yes, they need to teach kids about letting go, not being clingy to your crush to the fact it’s uncomfortable. Also, IMO allura is alr girlboss for not liking lance, keeping it that way is so much better. Not saying their relationship idk how to say it is lowkey toxic? Bc allura only likes him after breaking up with lotor. If it’s so much better written then it could have been acceptable .

Don’t get me wrong, Keith is my literal favorite character and deserves the world. But I agree, that he and shiro got a little too much time. Like, outside of the shipping, I really enjoyed lance and Keith’s relationship. I went from finding lance annoying af, to a relatable character who just wants to prove himself. I’ll never forget or forgive how they butchered my boy.
But you know another character they fucked up? Lotor. Missed opportunities? Lotor. Uncomfortable real life parallels regarding racial issues? Lotor. This character is such a mess it hurts.
I still love Voltron, and even tho it’s a mess, I won’t forget it anytime soon. At least dragon prince helps me cope lol
i completely agree with you. and i wouldnt have any problems with keith and lances relationship but they really never showed what they were to each other and also never kept up the bond they were creating. and Lotor deserved better. in the end they just showed that lotor was like his father,who he was trying to not be at all. lotor is so relatable and they just used him as a plot device that couldve been avoided.

He literally said he voted Keith because he thinks he’s awesome and the FUTURE. AND KEITH JUST INSULTS HIM??? I headcanon Keith was just really caught off guard and said the first thing to pop into mind.
Like he and lance have gotten so close, so to just say that was just wow. It hurt me to hear that and know it lance as well. And what makes it even worse is that it isn’t brought up again. Same situation when they were floating in space. They both said awful things to each other and it’s never talked about.

Honestly, lance did need more character development. Keith and Shiro literally got the most character development throughout most of the series (especially Keith) but lance and hunk didn’t. I love lance but I wanted more for him. Also having Alura like lance around seasons 7 and 8 of Voltron was when I knew this was gonna be a mess. Love your video!

I always thought the allura thing was for lance to realize he didn’t need to be “lovestruck “ to be valuable and that the “ideal girl” may not be what you want.
In the end I feel they make his insecurities go away just because he gets the girl, when in fact that’s quite bad for healthy relationships, he should have gotten a character arc maybe him realizing that even having the girl he’s still insecure and that in the end Allura wasn’t really a good option for him.

While I am totally obsessed with a potential Keith and lance relationship because I wanted it so bad. I can see why seemingly out of nowhere Allura and Lance became a thing. Remembering how the first moment they met I mean Lance just gave the weirdo vibes tbh but throughout the show you do see him change and develop, he moves to second command, he respects Keith as the leader of Voltron. He becomes more humble, but none of that has diminished his spirit, his good nature. True they should’ve shown more Lance getting over his insecurities and bonding even more so with the red lion. I liked Keith for Lance. I mean he’s all serious with a bit of a mean streak and going off on his own sometimes, couple that Lance’s good nature and gentle spirit, Lance would be so pissed at him for going off on his own but when Keith feels so much of the world weigh on his shoulders, here comes Lance being annoying and dorky but Keith wouldn’t help but smile and grab him into a hug. Allura she has a gentle spirit with a big heart which would match Lance but despite wanting to be with Lance now, she was so focused on her grief, and with the other Alteans she was very one track minded, i feel if she were alive now maybe she would leave Lance out of the spirit of Duty because her duty is to her people which would outweigh her love for Lance. Bottom Line though I don’t think either romance would affect Lance’s development, he has changed little by little. If you actually watch the show from start to finish I see the changes in him but yes i am definitely a KLance but Lallura was definitely a sweet relationship

At the beginning of the show I was like: okay, he is the funny main guy and he is going to get the girl at some point. I didn't really care about him honestly. But as the show progressed I realized his potential as a very good character and I hoped that they would make more of it. Like that he learns that he is valuable on his own and doesn't need a partner for that / a partner is not going to magically take your insecurities away. Instead he got with Allura and looked miserable most of the time (to me he looked sad a lot when he was with Allura) and didn't make much progress. It's really sad because he really grew on me bit at the end his potential was just thrown away for a romance.
The fact that fanfics explored more of Lance's insecurities than the actual show who only hinted on it is telling a lot.

I found it irritating that from a writing perspective, Lance was framed as the main character. He was the first character we saw and the last. They very easily could have started with Shiro or Keith, but they chose Lance. Typically the main character has the most character development/the biggest arc. I was so very confused by the writing on this show. There was minimal character development, shitty character choices and so many missed opportunities and dropped plot lines, I lost count. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a show and it's writing.

Something I absolutely hated about allurance was that they drew so many parallels with Lance and Allura’s father, AND THEN THEY HAVE ALLURA AND LANCE DATE. “Oh Lance, you’re like my father. You stepped in just like he did. You have the same sword as he did. I think.. I’m in love with you.” MAKE IT MAKE SENSE??

Im not a fan of voltron, but that's why I clicked the video: it warms my cold dark soul to watch someone rant about something they enthusiastically love, but I don't particularly enjoy. I get jump right into why my (parasocial/irl) friends enjoy their thing so much and, seeing them happy makes me happy and I understand the thing I didn't like a little more. 💕

The show didn't respect his character or the potential his character have -or even his fans when led us on about how he'll get a non-romantic story-involved arc- and it really shows. He was a decoy protagonist, there to stand in while the show built up everyone else, and then treated badly and like a leftover when they're done with handing out cool stories to the other members.
Remember the voltron vlogs? We get to learn a little something serious and cool about the others and they just made Lance's vlog about Allura. When the other past paladins gave the others compliments about them, Alfor just said Lance was great bc he was dating Allura.
They couldn't even bother to give him a career end that's true to him. He was ~only~ right hand and co leader of the team and the first paladin of this group, but who cared about details like that. The writers even admitted the farming thing was a spurr of the moment thing and was bc he visited a farm and thought it great to live there. That's how little thought they put into lance's writing.
truly a tragic end to his arc, but then again many other characters endured the same in different ways.
All in all: the darker skin boys got less than everyone else and the darker skin girl died.

I feel like these two were also kind of fucked up
Threw out the show they honestly felt like side/back round characters
I’m going to talk about pidge first, I felt like the show didn’t have enough emotional moments and whenever there characters auctually went through a massive life changing charceter development
Like pidge for example
Pidge litterly lost her family in space
Her dad and her brother went on a space mission and deadass were presumed dead
Like THATS CRUSHING FOR A PERSON
And while yes some people take news of people deaths differently I felt like they didn’t give pidge enough emotional moments
Pidge would bring up her family and then the team would be like
Lol no anyways let’s focus on voltron
Which I understand the writers intent
But they would kinda ignore it for a couple episodes to a season
We never really got to see too much of how pidge felt towards her family
Because even though we knew that she loved her family we never got to many flashbacks that Established a strong bond between them
For the majority of voltron I would argue pidges main focus towards fighting for the universe is the hopes that she would one day find her family
Realistically I can only imgine how it would effect a person if there brother and father was litterly lost in space it would crush you and probably would lead to depression or other sorts of emotional trauma
The plot and story I feel like should have focused more on her building up her relationship with the paladins and such
Voltron is supposed to be a found family type of show showing that you don’t need to be related to someone to consider them family
And for this argue,ent I’m going to bring in Keith
Keith was the red paladin later the black paladin and when he eventually left to go with the blades the team says they will miss him but they lowkey kinda forget about him for the rest of the season

When she finds Matt’s supposed to be grave this is the first time we see her be emotionally crushed
We see her be devestatsed beileiving she was too late
And this lasted for like 30 seconds
Of course she finds out hes alive like 3 minutes later and don’t get me wrong I’m happy she found him
But
When I watched this scene I weirdly got exited because I thought the writers would finally add more to pidges personally other then the smart one who is good with tech and wants to find her family
And while they do do that by giving us some funny moments with her those funny moments were not very common
Now for hunk
Hunk honestly was a good character
A lovable goofball he loves to cook and is friendly
Like pidge we never got too many emotional moments but I’d argue pidge got atleats like 30% more development
But hunk honestly felt like more of a side character despite being one of the paladins
It’s hard to explain but we would all be living if we said the story just ignored hunk for the most part
Voltron? More like Keith and shiro I rest my point.
I really liked Pidge’s character and Hunk’s but they always felt like side characters compared to the other three.
Now don’t get me wrong Lance’s was clearly done dirty cause like veridis joe said, he got all those cool stuff but the writers never really used it. But other than the basic things about Pidge and ESPECIALLY Hunk it didn’t feel like they got too much character. I wish things went different with those two as they were my favourites but they never truly got a proper storyline and development to their characters, and thats a bummer if i do say so myself.
In conclusion, your points are literally on target 🎯 and the writers really skewed the whole found family dynamic, which at its core, was the best thing about the show.

Can I go on a side tangent about Prince Lotor?
I feel like DreamWorks did my man fucking dirty. He had everything going for him for a redemption arc and then pulled the rug from under us for no reasons. It feels like lotura ( Lotor and Allura ) only happened to satisfy shippers for five minutes while simultaneously cucking Lance. And for what?
Maybe I'm just salty because Lotor was my favorite from day 1, but holy shit I feel like he was screwed from greatness. Keith and Shiro were the only ones eating good in terms of character for the longest time and that suuuuuucks.
They literally gave so much personality and development to Shiro and Keith and then for hunk and Pidge the writers were like: 'You get cooking, and you get technology. Goodbye'
Then Pidge found her family and nothing important happened about her after. Like excuse me? I feel like hunks whole thing was the freaking balmera, which came and went very fast, then after that the writers like neglected him and the potential he held to be such a good character!

I fee as if if voltron was able to bring in thise subjects and scenes they could have done so much better
Lance was always my favorite from the beginning, but when he didn't get anything by the end it made me really sad. I personally relate with his insecurities of feeling inadequate, and the fact that his team members pushed those insecurities even further on him is really sad. They constantly tell him he's not important, and that he's something to be away from. It's supposed to be played off for laughs but I find it upsetting personally, how does Lance feel in those moments? Lance doesn't deserve any of what he gets, he was an excellent team member and a loveable character. I think if Klance were to have happened, that would make Lance's character development better. Moments with Keith and Lance are great and were a good part of what made the earlier seasons great in my opinion. Although often at odds with Lance, Keith seems to understand Lance on a deeper level, and the same goes for Lance understanding Keith. They work really well together. Allurance was just a mess because first of all, Lance was not the first choice, and also Allura doesn't seem to deeply understand Lance. She makes no efforts to make sure he's in check like Keith does. Also the fact that Lance became a farmer at the end is really dumb. When has he actually talked about having an interest in farming? I just find it highly unlikely that he would be a farmer after his Paladin days. @@rinina Definitely! Rayllum was so natural, and they're a lot younger, so it makes sense that they're feelings would change suddenly. We saw both sides of Rayllum fall in love with each other, whereas Allura was just wounded by Lotor's betrayal. Also, not hating on Allura here, she was a great character, but it was unfortunate that that was how the writers made her "move on" from Lotor.

See the difference is that they didn't kill off the abuse victim and made one of the of 'good' characters compare him to his abuser, besides the chemistry in TDP with Rayllum was significantly better than callum x claudia, where as (in my opinion) Lotura had a lot more chemistry and Allurance actually had 0, mainly because Lotura thematically was incredibly executed with several parallels and considering Allura and Lotor's arc as well as their parents' history, apart from that as it ended it really did feel like a Romeo and Juliet tragedy and I found that pretty good

God the one thing I hated most was probably Allurance becoming canon. I'm a Keith and Lance shipper, but that had nothing to do with it. It was incredibly one sided for the most part and would have been incredibly unhealthy. Seeing Allura and Lance made into only love interests at the end really just turned me off of the show. Especially with Allura dying and Lance becoming a farmer??? What???
Shiro is my favorite, but I dearly loved all the characters and even as someone who adores writing and analyzing it, seeing what happened with it just kills my soul. What I hate most in bad writing is the potential something had to be good. I never ended up fully watching Voltron, but I watched the first three seasons and some of the fourth and then the ending and my friend, who watched everything, always kept me up to date. Seeing a show that had such great potential to be entirely great and they just threw it down the drain. All of the writing ended up being just...crap. Shiro's PTSD (I especially relate to Shiro on this part), Shiro's sexuality, and then Lance as a whole character. By the time the ending came, I never bothered to finish watching the whole thing. Lance was a lovable goofball and I absolutely adore him. Seeing what the writing eventually did to him, how he was constantly treated, and even reading these comments and watching the video just makes me so mad. Lance for sure deserved better and I wish Allurance would have never become a thing because it is just the basis of an unhealthy relationship. You can love someone and not end up with them, you can have a ship and enjoy it even if it's not canon/you don't think it should be canon. I never cared if Klance became canon, I figured it wouldn't, but I never wanted to see Allurance become canon especially in the way they did it with killing her off and making him a grieving farmer? I still fail to understand this. It ended up making Allura feel, to me, like she was just the female love interest and it ruined her character for me. The writing killed this show and I'm glad people all agree that it's pure crap and should have been so much better. I just like to pretend it never happened.

The way Allurance became canon just reinforces the idea that in order to date a girl, just constantly and persistently pursue her even when she shows noticeable disinterest, asks you to stop, insults and ignores you, dates other people, and eventually she'll come to her senses and realize what a catch you were all along. They literally made Lance into a 'nice guy'.

I know this show has been done and over with, and it’s the definition of a dead horse, but seeing people still talk about how disappointing it was is nice because it make a me feel validated. Weather I like it or not, Voltron got me into anime and cartoons. So seeing something I loved at one point go down the drain for nothing hurts. Anyway, I still rewatch it for some god awful reasons I can’t think of at the moment so seeing people still talk about it in a structured way and why it made us so mad is really validating.

Klance not being a thing just got me thinking that there isn't a lot of Male x Male relationships in cartoons, most mlm relationships in cartoons are reserved for two dads who only have a handful of lines. While I totally love that Lesbian relationships have gotten tons of representation they seem to get a lot more like Shira/Catra, Luz/Amity, Garnet, Marceline/Princess Bubble Gum, Korra/Asumi and a couple other I could mention, its not a competition at all but it just kinda makes me sad that their hasn't been many male Main Characters be Gay or Bi.
I haven’t seen kipo and the age of wonderbeasts but I heard that one of the main Characters has a gay relationship. Though I do agree that there could be more gay cartoon characters that aren’t just dads who have minimal involvement in the show.

I will never be over the fact that when I was rewatching the entirety of Voltron I noticed that the first person who ever apologized to Lance for their shitty behavior towards him was Kuron.
Back on season 1 on one of the first eps Hunk and Lance talk a bit about earth and Lance opens up and says how much he miss his family and when he starts crying he excuses himself and leaves and Hunk just stands there...with a poker face like saying "he is just being a drama queen" when he was the one to say that their families must think they are missing or even dead like????? Damn Hunk you are supposed to be the caring one but he made Lance cry and doesn't even bat an eye???
While in season 5 after that whole scene of Kuron screaming to Lance to stay out of the way and the paladins being in a crisis and Lance is really freaking out they dismiss his feelings and have "Shiro" taking him away so he doesn't bother them. (the disrespect!) And Lance notices that he really was being annoying and tell "Shiro" that he doesn't need to give him a reprimend cause he would stay quiet and even after Kuron apologizes and said that he just blow up at him without reason Lance noticed that there was something going on with "Shiro" and what does he do? Selfless Lancey Lance says it's not a big deal and comforts him! The amount of times he puts others feelings before his owns and no one seems to do the same is so heartbreaking for me

Dude I feel you 1000% on the shitty layout of Allurance. She ignored him for 6 whole seasons and then just magically started liking him towards the end of season 7. He and Keith had way more chemistry and I saw the faces Lance made at Keith and those were not just regular smiles. I was so pissed off and fed up with the show by the end I was glad it was over. They did Lance so dirty and it really angers and saddens me how he literally ended up with nothing.
Having Allura reject Lance's advances for six Seasons then randomly have her return Lance's feelings only T kill her off in the same season is one of the most genuinely baffling writing decisions I've encountered in my life. It's up there with with things like the final episode of How I Met Your Mother

Like I know I’ve left three comments now but I can’t find all the words to fully express how important this video is to me because Lance was also my FAVOURITE character in this show and I cared about him SO MUCH. He was the only chance I’ve ever gotten to see someone almost entirely like me on screen, latin and bisexual with tan skin and honestly probably adhd too why not. Even though I was a klance shipper what I actually wanted the most from this show is bi Lance confirmation or at the VERY LEAST that he FINALLY get the respect and love he deserved from the other paladins and that they stopped treating him like a clown instead of a skilled fighter. And we never got that. I cried so hard at the end of the last episode because even though I knew deep down it would never happen I still stayed to the very end thinking MAYBE they’d throw me a bone and I didn’t just sink years of my life into loving this show thanks to promises made by the entire crew that simply never happened. And of course nothing happened, and I was devastated.
Like listen I KNOW this is so incredibly over dramatic but I was just so attached to my beautiful, witty, charming, caring, self conscious, slightly obnoxious, over confident, but actually incredibly sweet and loving bisexual Cuban boy and they just did him so so dirty and I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. If only we could take him and give him the ending he deserved.
Those interviews and panels where they promised that lance’s endgame wouldn’t be what he thought he wanted and where they joked that “lance’s milkshake brings EVERYONE to the yard” will haunt my dreams forever. Like they just never understood what proper representation actually means to people, and Lance was truly the first time even I fully understood what representation meant because I’d never gotten it so close before. And now it turns out I still don’t.

imo the main problem w/ the way lance was written was that, while some characters like pidge, keith, and ESPECIALLY shiro were deconstructions and subversions of the tropes they were put in (pidge knowing a lot about science and aliens because their family was taken by aliens (also being gender apathetic coded dont @ me), keith actually having at least some semblance of a character besides being an orphan, shiro having serious ptsd thats actually explored rlly well in earlier seasons because of the fact that hes more experienced and therefore a leader character, you get the point), lance was given hints that there was something under the overly confident exterior, but as soon as they SHOULDVE actually started coming into play in terms of exploration, they were dropped for a forced hetero romance.
anyone who was involved in the voltron fandom back before season 5 (or just in general tbh) knows how popular fics where lance actually opened up FULLY about being insecure as hell were, and thats because thats what everyone wanted to see in the show. everyone wanted the goofball attention-seeking overly confident character to get deconstructed, to be shown feeling lonely and being unable to handle rejection or ridicule well, and we wanted it to be more than a joke. we wanted HIM to be more than a joke. but we didnt get that
honestly imo lotora worked rlly well in the show before the bullshit twist abt lotor was revealed; it made sense in terms of character development too because allura needed to be shown how kind galra could be, even after the whole keith plot, bc she still harbored prejudice. the thing abt him being evil was just. so obviously thrown in as a last minute twist to confuse everyone, and to further allurance. it feels like they were so close to having lance realize that the way he treated allura in his head as some sort of prize for being the best paladin wasnt healthy, and that she clearly didnt return the feelings and that was OKAY, but then dropped it so he could be a rebound for her. it wouldve worked so much better if he realized that at the very least.
OR theres the fact that while keith was gone w/ the blade, lance was left to be lonely, bc hunk and pidge were constantly hanging out without him and yk the whole clone thing was going on w/ shiro, and it was just... never explored? we never got to see how alone he actually was, how he felt watching his friends constantly not invite him to hang out, how he probably wouldve felt excluded from the group as a whole now that he couldnt argue or at least banter w/ keith. it didnt even have to be in a romantic way for that to still be the case; keith and lance compliment each other, regardless of the nature of that dynamic, and lance was left with nothing while keith was gone. it couldve ACTUALLY gone in depth abt who lance is as a person and what his real motives are.
also w/ the altean thing !! yes !! lance being half altean couldve worked, an altean surviving and having lance then leaving and lance's other parent finding someone else to have more kids with wouldnt be out of the realm of bullshit that the show couldve pulled off, and like you said it wouldve made a good few scenes and character explorations if lance, being half altean, and keith, being half galra, talked to lotor abt their heritage !! and hell they could have lance's altean parent be found out to be dead if they didnt want to figure out a way to write in another altean (even tho the show clearly wouldve been fine w/ that); it just didnt make sense that smth was clearly being foreshadowed w/ the broadsword and then it just. never came up again. no one ever even questioned it.
personally, my little idea for how that couldve been discovered is like, once keith comes back lance shows him the sword and KEITH points out how its weird, then that leads them on a whole investigation on who one of lance's biological parent was (maybe the human one told him that the other parent hed been living w/ wasnt his bio parent but never specified who it actually was, or theres like obvious differences in the way lance turned out looking vs the rest of his siblings idk); THAT couldve been rlly interesting, but the show just. dropped the whole thing

the biggest problem with the show aside, the ship bating, the stilted animation, the inconsistent tone, misguided story, the odd pacing and the layout of it all, the biggest problem is that there is almost no consequence for actions that have been taken, there are often huge decisions being made and it doesn't affect anything if it eve gets mentioned, characters like lance and keith nearly die, ready sacrifice themselves for their teammates and no one brings it up, when pidge first wants to leave voltron, her team mates act in different ways, and she realizes she can't just leave to find her family when her teammates and most importantly the universe need her but then come 3seasons later she's out searching for her family and her team aren't with her did they not learn to be a team or is the real lesson it's good to do things by yourself, i guess that must be true because when keith leaves for the blade, no one cares no one mentions it no e asks ifhe's doing alright or if he's still alive even though these missions can get him killed, and speaking of death i guess it means nothing to everyone because when lance died for allura who then immediately saved him with her bull shit deus ex machina powers he doesn't find a new appreciation for life, no one asks if he's ok and he never really grows as a person he just goes back to making dumb jokes, also the biggest example of no consequences the biggest F YOU in my opinion, keith lives in a cave for 2 years he's missed 2 years of his life living with his mum and a wolf, 2 years travelling at a very slow speed all to one goal and that whole journey is like 2 minutes long there is no interesting things that happen we see a quick montage that's it no interesting growth it all takes place off screen, keith never says he misses his friends i don't think he ever even mentions them and when he gets back he acts extremely professional, only addressing them in very formal ways, no happy hello, no i've missed you guys, just SHUT UP LANCE, YOU SUCK AND YOU'RE STUPID, this could have been a chance for interesting issues, how will he cope with being alot older, how does he see life, how does he view his other his friends how is he different, he isn't he's just slightly more mature, but still basically the same person as he came into the cave as when he left, it's this sort of writing that makes viewers think the writers don't care and if the writers don't care or even if the characters don't care, then why the hell should your audience care
My opinions of Voltron have changed a lot over time. Especially lately. I was about 11 or 12 when I first watched it ( I’m 16 now for extra context) by the time it ended I had lost interest. I watched up until the second to last season but then dropped it. A little while after I sort of internalize the whole “Voltron bad” Thing and just casually clowned on it with everyone else. The show had its flaws, especially near the end but, I think that if we just set fandom drama aside, it was a good enough show. again, far from perfect, But good enough.
I personally want to view this part of my childhood as a fun and positive memory. It was a cartoon that younger me loved, nothing more, nothing less. I don’t care if the fandom was “cringe”, or toxic. I didn’t know any of the people doing that weird shit and I didn’t have any control over them. This show was and still is my shit and I will live my truth till the end of time.
I am not a fandom person, it was terrible trainwreck of a show.

Because I knew what the creators had worked on before, I set expectations for it that it massively did not meet. That's not necessarily the show's fault, but I think if I had come into it not expecting much and was able to not think so introspectively about every detail (like how most children would watch shows) then I would have enjoyed it more.
I watched this show as an adult fully into her 30's and not gonna lie, I personally I loved Voltron, ending included. The ending is just perhaps too mature in comparison to how it first began, and I can see why the original target-audience would be spooked and even feel like they're watching an entire different show. It is my conviction the writters should (maybe) have known how to better handle the public expectations and tone it down a little haha. But they really have gone all out and didn't hold back at all, and I can respect that - especially when the ending was right up my alley. I say that because I am very much impressed an american cartoon has finally managed to catch my attention, when I usually have a strong distaste for most their productions and how silly they are (no offense). I usually prefer the Japanese approach to animation with TV shows such as Violet Evergarden, Fullmetal Alchemist, and the likes.

First of all, it's good to see people talking about Voltron in 2021. It's good that people haven't forgotten about this fandom. So I feel like Voltron focused too much on some characters and left others out. Pidge, Keith and Shiro were developed, with an explored past and all. As they say in my country, Lance and Hunk were forgotten at the barbecue. Both were used as comic relief or all the time, and never developed a good plot for them. At least Hunk had a happy ending, unlike Lance, where personal development is basically about how he feels about Allura. I don't like Allurance (because the couple had a bad development, and from my point of view, Allura wasn't even in love with Lance) I don't know, I think Lance should have stayed with someone else or alone.
To me how they did Allura and Lance’s relationship was the equivalent of Sakura saying “I Love you” to Naruto after seasons upon seasons of simping after Sasuke and doing Naruto dirty. And then they get together! Ugh!

Remember when "I'm just a boy from Cuba" line was mentioned way before the season it aired in and everybody, even the biggest shippers thought it was about his insecurities as a paladin and lack of confidence in his skills... and then it turned out to be about his love interest....
In the previous seasons, they unlocked new weapons when they had an important moment. Like Lance got the sniper rifle after accepting his position as the red paladin, signifying his new position and responsibilities. So when he had the Altean broadsword and noticed something was up with Shiro, I thought it meant that he was finally going to have his moment but nope. I guess he has the Altean broadsword so Alfor approves and he's worthy of dating his daughter? idk?
I really think that Keith being away for so long was a very bad decision. Of all the characters, he's the one who should have stayed with the team most because he needed to learn how to open up and communicate with people and find his place. Seeing more of Keith as black paladin and Lance as red would have worked great for both of them because they could balance each other out and learn a lot from each other. It seemed like it was going that way in S3 but then Keith left and magically came back as the perfect leader so that was another waste

Just gonna throw my headcanon out there - Lance has bipolar depression. The later seasons show him more isolated, insecure, depressed - Even distancing himself. He seems to be going through what I like to call a “drop” (as a fellow bipolar depression sufferer), where you go to a deep, deep depression for awhile, with period spots of mania that you can literally track in the show! But I could just be trying to push my Langst agenda!

@@user-hl4xd4tb5w omg same!! When the first season of voltron first came out, I was still in the thick of questioning my gender, and at the time my brain had decided on agender, so I latched onto Pidge SUPER hard and gave them my gender and pronouns at the time.
I spent another half a year or so questioning and ended up being a trans guy - and I don't use they/them pronouns anymore - but Pidge, to me, represents that kinda scary time in my life, and they gave me so much comfort, so they'll always be agender to me.
also same about the dysphoria thing, it really did feel like a large portion of the fandom was just waiting for the subtext of their past to become text bc they were small and cute so oF CoUrSE they're a girl

Lance and Allura has a great friendship dynamic, but we lost that as soon as they got together, and Lance became Allura's boyfriend... and nothing else.
Honestly that relationship hurt both characters more then it helped them.

Omg, the line about needing 1 on 1 character missions to further the character relationships are spot. All of the paladins (including Allura) should've had 2 person missions together to explore their relationship dynamics!!!! Like, even if some characters were out on a mission and the others were back at the castle, the castle hangouts could be the fun B-plot.
In particular i'm still salty we didn't get more Keith/Pidge interaction, i don't ship them but they would be such a fun duo 😔
thank you for this. i tried to rewatch voltron recently and i got to the end of season 6 riiiiight before the scene where everyone just lets lance blame himself for the kuron shit but i dont seem to be able to continue and i really miss how much i loved it. lance was my main man and he TRULY got absolutely nothing.
i had never loved a show like that when i first watched voltron, i was going through past episodes before s7 and 8 came out and thinking up theories, looking for foreshadowing, and i guess its my own dumbass fault for having faith and expectations but i really thought they were gonna go all out for our lance in those last seasons because of the lack of lance content in the ones before. one thing that really got me was that damn scene in the first season where allura is explaining the role of each lion. when she talks about blue the camera switches between her and lance, when she talks about red lance and keith are in frame, and when she talks about the black lion shiro and keith are fully in frame and lance's head was juuuust peeking in and like, after lance stops trying to be the best and starts doing whats best for the team, i wanted just ONCE the best thing for the team to be lance leading and lance in the black lion. especially since while shiro was fucked up lance made some excellent calls where shiro made the wrong choice, like when weird shit comes out of the ground on Nazlexa (i dont remember how to spell it, the planet that was a bomb) and lance is immediately like 'alright time to go til we figure out what the shit is going on' and shiro is like 'No,,,,, We Must Figure Out What This Is By Standing Right Under It' and then they get pulled in by the gravity field and eventually get saved by fucking deus ex allura after lance tells her she's 'voltron's heart' and she unlocks the very legit altean power to fucking defy gravity apparently??????? and there were several other moments while shiro and keith were in the black lion where lance was giving basically the correct orders and keeping the team together and like, i dont even think he shouldve led for long, but i think one lance led mission because keith or shiro were MIA or something wouldve just been poetic and proven lance's worth to himself - like he wanted to lead so badly but when he dedicated himself to be whatever the team needed, the responsibility was put on him naturally anyway because he IS competent and he IS reliable and he can lead and does lead when that's whats needed of him. it couldve been such a great device to restore some of his self confidence after his guilt at not noticing something was up with shiro and the general inferiority he feels because no one gives that lad any fucking love.
'voltron's heart' also couldve been foreshadowing for something cool but just kind of wasnt because let me tell you i REALLY wanted to like allura. i really did but they just made her character so shit with her magic altean powers that could just do ANYTHING the plot demanded and then killed her off. they couldve at LEAST given me some strong girl fanservice with the altean super strength that's only touched on like, twice - way at the beginning when she's escaping galra capture with shiro, and when she fuckin BOUNCES lotor like a basketball. i loved that content with her but nah they gave her the classic sexy girl weapon of a whip and didnt let her crush any galra skulls with her bare hands. she couldve been so fucking cool.
and last thing farmer lance upsets me way too much, like, lance is the one who in the pilot episode jumped into a random alien ship and flew them all off planet through a wormhole. he brought everyone to space, piloting was his dream, and then what hes just happy to stay on earth and tell people about his dead girlfriend forever?? there is no justice for this man. i never watched season 8 and im not sure i can.
im honestly still so sad over this show because it had allll of the ingredients i would want but then they just absolutely ruined it. and if you say you dont like it everyone is just like 'oH yoUre juST biTTER ABouT KlanCE' and like partly yeah i think that wouldve been a cool direction for it to go in but i didnt need that. i just needed to feel like every character and especially my fave was recognised and developed and i dunno, not just used as some trope or as a tragedy device to be the sad man who lost his love and dedicated his whole life to her in an unhealthy way. let my man go back to space

I love how people are still commenting 2 years later, I only watched Voltron near the beginning of 2022 I think around September (maybe not the beginning but ok) and I realised it isn't so popular, then once I got into the lore, I was glad I wasn't a part of this fandom 3 years ago.
The biggest thing I disliked about Lance hooking up with Allura, aside from your points, was how both don’t talk how they normally did before hand. Like, the relationship is so dry once they hook up. It’s barley there and they only give expositions. Like, Lance is a goof. Allura can be a dork at times. These two would be having karaoke nights and shit talking bad movies.
Voltron at this point just makes me sad when I think about it. I loved it so much and had high hopes for Lance (he was my absolute favorite) and all the others. Instead absolutely nothing was done with them, Allura and Lotor just *die*, and the conclusion left so much to be desired. I wish it was possible to get some sort of alternate version of this show where all of the problems are addressed and it is finally able to reach its full potential. It could’ve been something so great and that hurts.
Just finished Voltron last week. Came to the fandom super late, but I love this show and your style of commentary is awesome! It just feels like a chill, funny conversation. I think yours is the only one I've watched in its entirety (and repeated!) just cause everything is so engaging :)
And on Lance: I loved the episode "The Black Paladins", mainly because I'm a sucker for emotional moments. But even though Keith was the one to save Shiro, I really wish Lance was given the chance to be the black paladin. He was the only one able to connect with Shiro in the astral plane. He was also the only one suspicious of Shiro. Why would they build Lance up this way just to bring his character development down? They all deserve better

I think the thing that hurts most about this show is the potential it had and the disappointment of it never using that potential. Lance was one of my favorite characters, from the moment your introduced to him your interested in watching him grow and become a more full person of himself, but no the show didn’t do that and the worst thing is that it didn’t even give the fans closure for his character
Honestly Lance is the only reason I watched the show and he was also the reason I stopped watching the show. Honestly Lance's character is really important to me (i guess he would be considered a comfort character) and I'm not even kidding when I say I was heartbroken at how they completely ruined him.

it makes me FURIOUS that allurance was such a big deal. like i honestly believe lance was pretty much over her by the time it actually happened and he really didnt love her romantically in the end but felt as if he was the only one that would share all of that since coran was old
Also with large cast shows I feel like there always is one character that is a little more central and is the "main" character. The first season I though Lance was the central main character and I loved it.

I don't know if it's just me, but Lotor reminds me SO much of Loki. The daddy issues, mental health issues, harming others A LOT, racial trauma, intelligence, charm, etc. Obviously, different characters, under different circumstances, but it is interesting how both MCU and Voltron creators messed with their development A LOT, missed their message with the characters entirely, and both have been seen as doomed despite good chances that both of them could've been turned for meaningful and long lasting good. They could've been explored so much more, but no. And I'm not saying both of these characters are 'good heroes' or anything. They are complex characters that could be used to explore ethics and morally gray topics.
Also, it's obvious how much the creators were keeping Lance and Keith far apart to avoid anything becoming of them. They knew what they could've been and that they most likely could've turned romantic, but for some reason it wasn't okay. Plus, it's just disrespectful at this point how they treated Shiro and Adam, and then Shiro and the other Atlas crew member. We didn't even get to know the crew member.
Moreover, to think, what Lance could've become if Allurance didn't happen. Allura is an amazing character, but she should've stayed single after Lotor. I'm sorry about Lance. He ended up becoming an awesome person, the Voltron creators just couldn't see it.
I think Allura/Lance could've worked if the writing staff had been consistent about it from the beginning. In the first episode we already have Lance being smitten and a few other 'moments' after that but that's all that the writers gave them. What really ticked me off was when we had Lotor/Allura pop in out of nowhere and then immediately die off when purple prince boi turned out to be evil and then proceeded to become dead melty purple prince boi. After that having Lance and Allura end up together not only feels rushed it once more makes Lance No.2 a back up, the guy to step into a slot when the first choice for that slot ran off. He had so much potential as a character yet time and time again the writing staff did absolutely nothing with it.
I just finished watching voltron recently because quarantine and why not. Yeah Lance deserved better. I’m not a big shipper but, Lance and Keith had very good chemistry together and it’s just sorta sad they couldn’t have more screen time together even if it stayed platonic and not romantic. I was disappointed that Allura and Lance stayed together I think they should’ve broken up but stayed friends. I think it was important for Lance’s development to be able to have a deeper connection with a girl his age but, I don’t think he should’ve stayed with her. Like seeing the sunset scene with Lance and Keith and then Lance’s date with Allura you can see that he has so much more chemistry with Keith than Allura. I don’t mind Klance not becoming cannon but geez they have better chemistry. It seems like the only reason Allura became interested in Lance was because she still wanted a partner after Lotor and she knew Lance had feelings for her.
