- Sunset Lanes is a program documenting the on going restoration of my Norton Polivnick designed home and the mid-century modern community of Sunset Lanes, located in Westminster Colorado.
A typical renovation these days, especially a flipped house, but even a DIY, trends toward current materials and colors and they're all over the place. It is an assult to the eyes. Most homes look best...actually look RIGHT, when they are respectfully renovated (restored) keeping in mind at the very least the age and style of the home. I'm in the middle of taking back a '49 Cape Cod so I realize the dedication and time it takes, but also know the satisfaction when each phase is completed. I'm very much enjoying your process. Your choices are spot on. Beautiful.
Just came across your channel today. I was hooked before I was 10 minutes in (episode 8}. I stopped it and immediately went to see if there were other episodes and was so glad to see you had 9 episodes so far. I have binged every single one and must say it is clearly evident you are a student of architecture/design and this time period. I was born at the end of the 1950's and lived in these suburban neighborhoods throughout the sixties and seventies. I applaud your restoration efforts, attention to detail and really like your editorial style of visual storytelling. You have so many iconic pieces that clearly mark this style and time period. Even the penny loafers without socks--dude you've literally worn holes into the soles! (Also noticed the Peter Gunn LP by your turntable!). Keep up the fantastic work. I look forward to all your future episodes.
Thank you.... I really very much appreciate your comment.
This is great. More content, please. One of your videos was in my feed yesterday and I’m already thru all 9.
Chris, Fantastic! I'm glad your enjoying it! More content to come! JR
You might not enjoy the finish work but it looks great with the finishes done, good job!
Thank you! I appreciate it!!
I’ve really enjoyed watching you restore your home. The attention to detail to bring it back to the original and the history of the house and community have been quite educational making me pay attention to the old communities around me. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Lots more to come!
A vinyl wrap on your fridge in one of the classic colors of the day would look cool
Absolutely they would!! That's a great idea! I thought about doing a wrap or even just repaint, but I'm going to end up replacing them this winter. Both the stove and the refrigerator came with the house when I bought it...and are in pretty rough shape (missing racks and drawers). I'm planning on going with stainless.
You're a much braver man than I am, Joshua - putting that ladder on open stairs and all! Looked pretty darned dangerous!
I was surprised you painted the stairs and didn’t stain them ... nice to get those chores completed. 😊
Thank you. Yep, they weren't intended to be stained... The quality of the lumber etc....same as the screen walls. The treads are also not stained and will be carpet wrapped.
I'm watching with trepidation and hoping that you don't make a misstep and come to grief. Loving the blues and orange.
hahah. I have pretty good balance.... but the couple days I had the treads off the stair made for difficult mid-night bathroom visits!
The stairs look great!
Thank you Sir!
it's always nice to see you restore your home 👍
Thank you, I appreciate the comment!
I purchased a mid 1970's poorly designed house that still had the original harvest gold appliances. Of course, all began to fail the first year. The dining room had painted over rooster design wallpaper. Good luck on your interesting home. Do you know the original exterior colour?
Thank you! Yes....the exterior was originally (and will be going back too) the blue green that's on the interior. The fascia was white, beams columns and under the roof was the stained wood that I've already restored. The doors were either orange or yellow. Windows were paint to match the field. I had a small 2" square of the green that had never been painted under a vent, and Sherwin Williams was able to color match it perfectly.
Love the stained walls. How long do you think it will take you to complete your Reno?
Thank you. I'm 2 1/2 years in so far....staying on schedule the actual building should be done in another year and a half, then probably another year for the initial phase of landscape. So probably another 2 1/2 years.
what color stain did you use? I love your color scheme
Thank you. All the colors are exactly matched to the originals. Sherwin Williams does an incredible color match job with even just a small chip to work with! The stain is minwax cherry 235. It's so close to the original color, I think it was probably what was used for the original build.
