  • Rudolph M. Schindler, often referred to as RM Schindler, was a pioneering architect whose work played a significant role in shaping the landscape of modern architecture, particularly in Southern California. Born in Vienna, Austria in 1887, Schindler initially studied under influential architect Otto Wagner before joining the office of Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago. In 1920, Schindler moved to Los Angeles, where he established his own practice and began to develop his unique architectural style. His creations, including the iconic Lovell Beach House and his personal residence the Kings Road House, are celebrated for their progressive design principles and their seamless integration with the natural environment.
Andrew's description of how he came to reside in the Walker House is an exceptional account of fortunate circumstances unraveling. With a deep passion for Architecture, Design and Preservation, Andrew is a walking billboard for Saving Good Architecture and sharing it with others. Schindler's Walker House is not merely a structure; it's a living canvas of architectural ingenuity. Perched on the hills of Silver Lake, it commands attention with its sleek lines and dynamic angles, a testament to Schindler's commitment to challenging convention.
From finding the perfect furniture pieces that fit the home so generously to the artwork, ceramics and plants that fill the home, Andrew and his family have done a wonderful job at showcasing how a family with kids can live in a home that is blended so beautifully into the hillside. The Walker House stands as a timeless reminder of Schindler's genius, inviting us to reimagine the possibilities of modern living with every glance.

So rare to find an owner so articulate. There is a Schindler beach house that has captivated me for years and not just because of the roof design. This builder has enormous talent. Schindler was a genius. Thanks for being such an agreeable, enthusiastic and passionate steward of this permanent American resource. Your house is an important and permanent part of history and a very important token of a time when the philosophy of the USA with respect to encouraging the US middle class not to be merely “housed” but, rather, to have the right as average hardworking members of a sucessful nation to enjoying the privilege of living in a self-consciously progressive time with respect to the working class citizen. It’s important to understand that many of these 20th century designers shared a philosophy that understood the homes they designed as meant as a benefit to the middle class American, a token of the success of the nation they gave their work (and lives … in WWs I and II) to. When they were first built many of these guys homes weren’t meant just for the rich or for the elite “in-the-know” snobs. Many of these mid-mod iconic architects were champions of the common working man and thought everyone deserved to enjoy new, simple well-designed homes made from modern simple materials not laden with ornamentation.
The best of these homes NOW of course are in the hands of the rich, as all the best art inevitability seems to end up. But that’s not who many of them were originally intended for. There’s exceptions of course (Kaufman house etc.) but many were built for working people of average means, up to the successful middle class local small business owner. It’s only been the last two or theee decades that they have ALL become prestige items and targets of asset acquisition by the very wealthy.
Thanks for sharing your home. It’s great when a current owner is humble enough to consider themselves as stewards of an important part of history and feel obliged to share it with the descendants of the wide variety of working people for whom many of them were designed in the first place.

It's at 1845 Niodrara Drive in Glendale, so I can understand the feeling you're having about the flow of the place, and how it's design is speaking to & uplifting you. I had the honor of having lunch (many, many years - decades ago) with Raymond Neutra, the Neutra who had sanity and became a medical examiner, aka Quincy, with the L.A. Department of Health, and not an architect. Neutra spent time with Schindler at his King Rd house in L.A. The two men were polar opposites, albeit pioneers in L.A. Modernism. Schindler was a party animal, Neutra, a steiff Austrian who retired early and woke up early. Neutra had his cruel side. Neutra, upon seeing the rebuilt VDL Research II house stated to Dion, you took the soul out of my house.
The Walker House here, from Schindler, is a masterpiece, and a vanguard of modernism, and still has its soul. I have only been in three Schindler homes, and all were very special. I have been in four Neutra homes, and all very special, too.
I like both architects and this pre WW2 era in Los Angeles, a special time of innovation. You're not too far from the VDL house, and the differences between Schindler's and Neutra's vocabulary is quite different in the same location.

Such a beautiful flow of space, wonderfully open and integrated with the outside, but cozy and perfectly scaled for human dwelling. Very interesting details, the carpentry is a chapter all by itself, the stairs, the location of strategically places windows, just to make life happier. Thanks for sharing. This house has a soul. A happy soul too.

That was absolutely wonderful! I am surprised you are not an architect, you speak so well about the house, It really is beautiful! The interior is much nicer than Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses. Thank you for being the steward of the house. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Amazing home and I appreciate that someone can own one of these houses and not feel the need to tear out the guts to "modernize" it, when the house is more modern than today's homes.

I was raised in a home designed by Edward Killingsworth... and everything this man describes about the experiences of living in an architect designed home is right on the money. The value of good architecture is only paralleled by nature, itself.

It's interesting that he mentions "not being stuck in a box with a little cut out window." It was California's Title 24 energy-saving campaign that created these little boxes with small cut out windows - to save on energy, the there was a limit to your window area compared to the size of your home.
This home could not have been built in say the 1970s, especially since it probably has single pane windows.

When I moved to live in Los Angeles in 1995 I landed in this area because the company that I was working was there as well, very beautiful location but like everything it became way to expensive and not too safe, now it’s overcrowded and way more expensive but the overcrowded part really ruined it, there’s a lot of beautiful designed houses, small for today’s standards but beautifully designed and built. Avocado street was mine and it was lovely.

This is such a beautiful home, and I find it really sad that there was only one offer for it. One of these days I want to visit LA and drive around seeing all the beautiful mid-century and Spanish style homes. Thanks so much for sharing this stunning house!
