  • Air Norton + Tone Zone and Jazz + JB are arguably the 2 most popular pickups from Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan. Let's hear how they sound head to head.

    haha. They both win in my opinion- I have had a long standing battle in my head about which is better because I'm having a love affair with both companies. I tend to use SD's for a sound where I'm using a lot of effects, and also when I'm playing softer stuff. Dim's always work for me when I'm looking for more bite and I think Dim's retain much more of the guitars acoustic all round sound. Both have beautiful sustain. Neither is better. Though I do prefer Dim's hotrails, particularly the cruiser.

    They are very close, but the tone zone has a more pleasing harmonic quality and the jb tends to be harsh when you dig in. Some people like the harsh. I guess it depends on your style. Either set is great for a wide array of styles and both sets are very versatile. I prefer the Dimarzio's, but I'm also an Ibanez guy and I am probably more used to their particular flavor of sound.

    you can not make brightness and transparency but can make warm tone from bright pickups.

    I don't have a tone zone (it sounds amazing) but I do have a Jackson with a JB and that pickup is fantastic. It can do anything Metal, rock, cleans. IMO you can't go wrong with either. The Tone Zone is a bit warmer and the JB has a bit more bite. It's all about personal preference. Both of these would be an upgrade over any stock pickup.

    Those are 4 of my favorite pickups, which is why I had a hard time deciding. I have the JB & Jazz in a Gibson LP and the Tone Zone & Air Norton in an Ibanez RG. For me, the JB & Tone Zone were tied and I didn't prefer one over the other (which doesn't surprise me at all). For the neck pickups, I'd say the Jazz had a slight edge over the Air Norton, but not by much, which actually DID surprise me because the Jazz in my LP sounds quite a bit better than the Air Norton in my Ibanez. So that means in the same guitar, the Air Norton & Jazz sounded almost equally as good (to my ears).

    • @martinafan64
      @martinafan64 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skrete I think that would sound pretty good. Can't really go wrong with any of these 4 pickups in this demo. DiMarzio Evolution in the bridge & SD Jazz in neck might sound even better, depending on your tonal preferences. Evolution bridge is actually my favorite DiMarzio bridge pickup.

  • @independentthinker.273
    @independentthinker.273 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think it depends on the guitar. I use a JB on my strat and it sounds like the Tone Zone. It cuts through the overtone of the strat nicely. But a JB on a guitar where the pickups are directly mounted instead of floating on a pick guard the JB is going to sound real gritty and nasal.
    The Tone Zone has more of that open spongy sound that works with guitars where the pickups are directly mounted.

    I have watched so many Dimarzio vs Seymour Duncan videos lately as well as tried my Jackson with Dimarzios vs my Jackson with Duncans played clean through a Fender amp.
    My conclusion is that Dimarzios usually have more pronounced lows and highs, as well as sounding louder and more clear, but less dynamic. They also seem to jump out of the amplifier more than the Duncans.
    In every comparison, this usually initially makes me like the Dimarzios more, but after a lot of comparisons, I choose Seymour Duncan.
    The reason for this is that the Duncans sound more like the guitars should sound in my head and like they do on my favourite albums. They are often closer to the sound of the stock pickups of for example Fender and Gibson while still adding a flavour of "more", which I think is a good thing.
    When playing a power chord with overdrive and distortion, the Duncans sound sharp and growling, and you can hear every string with clarity. The noise is placed behind the sound of the strings. On the Dimarzios, however, there is a lot of muddiness from the extra low end, and it is very hard to hear the strings with clarity. You get a fat sounding chord that is bassy and trebly, but there is not as much detail.
    On TH-cam the Duncans can sound like they have a blanket over the amp compared to the Dimarzios but in real life it feels more like a smoothness while the Dimarzios are bit sharp to the ears as well as a bit muddy from the extra low end.
    Personally, I have never wanted to add low-end to a guitar recording. It is usually more about cutting out low-end to sit well in the mix, and the Duncans are just more record ready in that aspect.
    With that being said, they are both great choices. Get a good eq pedal on your board, and you can achieve any sound.

Like I said it depends on the guitar, but the SD is always in the bridge due to it's versatility. If it's good enough for Adrian Smith, Phil Collin, and Paul Gilbert just to name a few. They were the first after market replacement. You get the cleanest distortion, and when you dial it back it cleans up nice.

      rjonsolo1 and depends on guitar used and eq settings. change trebles in eq and both probably sounds the same as far as rlc resonant frequency is similar.

    • @adrs2
      @adrs2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think that there is no special magic in pickup itself. just the output and resonant frequency if the build quality is ok. rest is guitar construction, bridge, wood type -density and thickness of the body, strings thickness and spring tension. each of them make small difference but when summed up the change is gigantic.

    That Tone Zone is incredibly articulate. IMO a pickup is defined by how clean, articulate, and tight a chord is....what kind of not separation do you get when you play a power chord. Playing a lead style where you're just focused on one note at a time (and usually a lot of notes) is very easy to make sound full. Chords are completely different. That Tone Zone is killer for that. I didn't hear enough chords with the JB to tell, but generally speaking it wasn't quite as tight. Still sounded very good though. I'm late to the party, but wanted to say thank you for posting.

    Dimarzio ftw in my opinion! They sound great, nice lows and fullness all around in both Dimarzio pickups, whereas, the SD's seem to have a thinner more shrill sound, and also less forgiving when you make mistakes.

    • @meagainokay7673
      @meagainokay7673 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Dimarzios have a really buzzy noise on the clean channel whereas the Seymour's give a warmer sound and no noise.
      However, on the dirty channel I can't hear much of a difference to be fair. That would make me choose SD for overall sound adaptability.

    • @AtacamaHumanoid
      @AtacamaHumanoid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That buzz wasn't the Dimarzio at all. It sounds like a ground wire is the problem. Either that or it was the stock Ibanez S-1 single coil in the middle causing 60 cycle hum from something in the room. Notice the videos weren't shot at the same time, so any number of things might have changed in the room to cause that hum. When I record into my computer, if I turn the monitor a couple inches the wrong direction, single coils will pick up the frequency and start buzzing.

    Seymour Duncan pickups, on average, have a slightly more organic tone. Dimarzio tend to be more electronic or boosted (if that makes sense). Trying to think of another word to describe that tone, but cannot.
    I like both, depending on what I’d be playing. Obviously there’s different shades in each pickup manufacturer, so hard to generalize. But if I were to, that’s what I would say.
    One pickup from Seymour Duncan that has shades of Dimarzio is the Pearly Gates. A mighty fine pickup for a good PAF style tone boost. Joe Satriani used that one on his guitar “Pearly” that got stolen some years ago. A player who otherwise always used Dimarzio.

    • @jordansjournal3077
      @jordansjournal3077 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not say they’re more organic. Some may sound more organic due to having a ceramic magnet as opposed to Alnico, but overall, I don’t think so. But maybe your experience is different than mine. There are many experienced pros who prefer Seymour Duncan. It’s about 50/50.

    For the Clean parts you could hear the guitars by themselves with no backing tracks, but when it came to playing the pickups distorted, you used a backing track, which for me and probably many others, distracts from listening to the distorted pickups by themselves...which is what we want to hear in the first place.

    AT 1:23 you can hear the difference between single notes. Duncans have more attack, almost like little musical plops at the beginning of each note. DiMarzio's don't, the notes start without this percussive transients. Both sound really good and musical, it depends on what you want.

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. I've used both pickups in many live situations and the JB performs a lot better. I think DiMarzios try to do too much while not focusing on the tone. Duncans feel more natural and get through a mix better. I find there are few pickups as harmonic as a JB. Duncan's Custom range is also fantastic, and the Screamin' Demon, Pegasus, Full Shred, Pegasus, Pearly Gates, and Alternative 8. For any pickup to sound optimal you have to dial in the right EQ on the amp or with a pedal. When I gig I take one guitar with fresh strings which are less likely to break and I make sure the amp is EQ'd for that particular guitar. This is one thing I never mentioned in demo vids.

      Dimarzios are better in general. I'll still purchase a Duncan Distortion though, because it compliments my play style better.
      If you compare a Nazgul or Pegasus to a Titan, a Titan will always win. That's just where I got my idea from. You can get Black Winter and what not but in the end somehow Dimarzio rocks the tone perhaps just because of the individual note clarity. It's just so resonant, each note that is, that each and every minute details of the riff are somehow crystal clear. It's almost as if Dimarzio has an inbuilt compressor in all its pickups lol.
      Although for cleans, I prefer SH-1 '59 in the Neck position. It's so melodic I haven't found a beat for it (yet).

    I have seen you compare the Jem JR with the Jem . Can you campare the Jem JR to the S670QM? I have a Jackson with Floating double locking trem now but just wont make the tones I was hoping for. I am going back to my roots with Ibanez and on a budget. I really like body styles of Jem jr and the S series. I have for sure decided on HSH set up and 5 way blade. I am just in debate on the sound difference of the two.

    I dunno if anyone else thinks this way but dimarzio pickups are great for what most people use them for (shredding) but everyone always uses that typical tone with them and if you look on the website you can see why dimarzios are like how they are.. Nearly every single pickup has mids as their highest characteristic. Just ordered a custom 5 and a jazz for my ibanez RG2620 in hope of a less mid-heavy tone that dimarzios would only amplify in most cases.

    Have used DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan, and EMG pups for years. Was a die hard EMG 85/81 set fan for over 15 years. Wanted something that was warmer sounding. My 1987 B.C. Rich had DiMarzios in it as did my 1996 Ibanez USRG30 from the factory. I have had SD Screamin' Demon in B.C. in the bridge since that pup was released, or just after it was and a Cool Rail in the neck, and a SVR Vintage Rail in the middle. The Ibanez now has SD Black Winter in the Bridge and will soon have a '59'/Custom Hybrid in the neck with a Mega switch Model P 5-way. SD just suites my ears and style of playing. Can't go wrong with either Di Marzio or Seymour or even EMG all are great pick ups with pros and cons. Just go to decide which one suits you. BTW Good demo vid jem555bkk keep up the good work. Like how you didn't bias toward either pup and let viewers make up their own minds.

I took got a wild hair and decided to try the Jazz/Jb. I have two guitars with that set up and that's all I need to play.. :) No disrespect to Dimarzio cause I feel like I'm cheating, but I love my Duncans..

      Yeah, I think the Tone Zone can get a bit thick-sounding in some guitars. One with a fixed bridge I like, though, is my Epi Goth SG; it was sounding a bit harsh with every other pickup I tried, though instead of a JB I only had a Duncan Distortion to try from SD. The Tone Zone sounds perfect for that guitar IMO. I like Duncan Distortions more in other fixed bridge guitars, though.
