Suhr Thornbuckers (Vs. Dimarzio PAF & ToneZone)

  • Not an in-depth review by any means. A quick comparison between the two sets so you can hear the difference (If any), in my Ibanez USRG10 w/Alder body.
    The Thornbuckers are definitely lower output, but both sets are in the "patent-applied-for" vibe. With the Suhrs being a little bit more clear/defined & open.
    Just "Full HB" positions, as i replaced the switch and used different wiring. Please tell me which one you like better.

    The Dimarzios sound higher output and handle the gain and distortion better. The Suhr pickups handle clarity so much better. So each has their clearly defined use.

    I like the compression and balance of sparkle and fatness of the Dimarzio PAF Pro. The Thornbucker does have more sparkle though, is more open & natural, and more dynamic/expressive with the pick attack. I can see you keeping both in different guitars. Side note, I feel like a SD Jazz may be tonally in the middle of these two.
    Bridge position humbucker on the other hand... don't like either. They sound different clean (muddy vs thin) but with distortion, I feel both lack punch, clarity, and growl. I would recommend BKP Rebel Yell or BKP Holy Diver.

  • @Cheolchoirm

    This comparison reflects my observations after installing the Suhr TBs in my LP. Completely different pickups you are comparing there. Both are great for different purposes, but i prefer the Thornbuckers for my LP. Low output and maximised clarity, it's very inspiring to play. They sound very dynamic and musical which your video shows i think. In my shred axe (JP6) i prefer the illuminators which should be closer to the TZ/AN but with a more open tone.

      Agree! I think i'll eventually replace the Thornbuckers with SSH+ & SSV. I have them in other guitars and think are more suited for this type of guitar

    great playing&demonstration on the tone of both pickups! I hate to use phrases like 'it sounds vintage blah blah' but even with the covers on, the TBs seem to have more bite, clarity, and attitude. Tone zone sounds more 80s.

    As a huge DiMarzio fan, I really like the Thornbuckers on the clean and crunch. Once the higher gain stuff came in, they sounded extremely similar. Pretty sure you're not going wrong with either. I'd like to hear how the Suhr's stack up to the 36th Anniversary set. I do like those pickups.

    Never tried the “standard” Thornbucker, but have tried and like the Thornbucker Plus.
    The bridge DiMarzio reminded me of what I didn’t like when I had it in a guitar in the early 00’s. It sounded phlegmy and too mid-boosted, like the notes had a blurry halo around them.
    Didn’t care for either neck pickup, but the Thornbucker sounded more more defined and I like a single-coil in the front of my guitars.

    First and foremost, great playing. My late little brother was an amazing guitarist and friends with Allan Holdsorth. He would have been impressed. I'm not a DiMarzio fan but strangely I preferred the Thornbucker in the neck, the Dimarzio in the bridge. Wonder if they are the same windings so you could combine...

  • @manifestgtr
    @manifestgtr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow, I was fully expecting to hear the older design get taken down....but no.
    Dimarzio has always stood out to me for two reasons. They voice their pickups to sound really clear. Highly distinguishable notes within chords, great string balance and plays well at most gain levels (there are certain bridge exceptions that don’t like clean but what the hell...that’s nothing new). I don’t necessarily need some godly, gifted from heaven tone straight off my pickups. I just need them to be clear and defined. The rest can be handled by my amp. That thing has to be good for SOMETHING aside from looking good behind me.
    The other reason is finger feel. My strats don’t feel right without a tone zone s in the bridge. I feel like I’m fighting the guitar more often to get it to play certain things when I don’t have a dimarzio there. They just compress in a really musical, player-friendly way.
    Almost 20 years later and I really haven’t found anything aftermarket that bests my tone zones. The only other pickups that really do it for me are the stock hfs and vintage bass in my old custom 24. Those pickups are the ONLY pickups that belong in that guitar.

    • @RicardoDiazHimself
      @RicardoDiazHimself  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SSV is pretty clean itself. Like a good PAF. If you wanted you can get an SSV- which is cleaner. That clean & warm. The thornbucker is based on that.
      The SSH+ is hot and mid-heavy. I dont think it fits with a thornbucker, as the thorn is pretty clear and trebly

    Maybe it is just your setup, but I thought even the Tone Zone sounded thin on the "crunch". I mean not in a bad way, but based on the description I expected something much "thicker". On the lead the Tone Zone had more bass and a fuller sound. I was surprised that the Thornbucker didn't really sound more articulate. I thought it sounded pretty similar only a little thinner and muddier.

    Neither PAF Pro nor the Thornbucker were designed for 24-fret guitars. Satriani used PAF Pro on his signature 22-fret Ibanez while Pete Thorn's signature Shur has 22 frets as well. To my ears, they both sounded thin and lifeless on 24-frets. I would go with one of Vai's or Petrucci's signature DiMarzios, since they both play on 24-fret guitars. Good comparisson overall though.

    • @RicardoDiazHimself
      @RicardoDiazHimself  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really, mate. I actually didnt love the Thornbuckers over the SSV&SSH set, as the thorns are VERY vintage sounding. Super open and bright. Sounded almost single coil-like. Perhaps it wasnt translated here as well, but quite different from the PAF pro. I Think i would prefer the Paf pro on an ibanez. The Thornbucker are better for a 22 fret guitar, with different fuller-sounding bridge, like a vintage 2 post trem, instead of an zinc one like Ibanez usually uses.

    The thornbuckers don't have the character of the tone zones. The DiMarzio pickups had a cool rock character. The thornbuckers seem like a low output pickup that is straight and true that would need a nice overdrive pedal to take it to where the tone zones are and maybe give it some character. I would use a EVH 5150 overdrive with the thornbuckers to spice the tone up.

      To be honest I wouldn't even pay half its price for a TZ. The TB aren't overpriced, they have qualities no dimarzios have. And there are more expensive pickups for sure.

    What amp or amp sim are you playing into?

      The clean tone is thru a Blackface sim and the crunch is thru a cranked plexi sim!

      The crunch on the bridge was very Van Halenish.. no wonder.. haha

    Dimarzio Gravity Storm will fatten up that neck pickup tone ..

      Rob A didn't like them, tbh. Sound rather generic, like the evos, kinda.
      Prefer humbuckers that sound kinda single-ish, not high output

      have you ever compared the SSV with the Thornbucker in the neck?

    • @RicardoDiazHimself
      @RicardoDiazHimself  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob A yes! Prefer the SSV for an all purpose pickup. But if I had an LP type guitar, I'd go for the thornbs. Love the SSV on the guitars I use it in

      I have to wholly agree that Suhr pickups seem to have more harmonic content than any other maker I've tried. Vibrant and Alive. I have the DSH+ in my Washburn N4 which I love to bits. The Seymour Duncan 59er was just too scooped and spiky so the Gravity Storm fills in the mids like I needed but it also rounded the highs. A nice colored tone that I can live with on my thinnish, SS Cube as it compensates but as for honesty that would translate to a nice tube amp like a Victory V30 .. I should probably get back to the Suhr in the neck.
