  • Is the Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker any good? Ulike other Seymour Duncan pickups, the Seymour Duncan Invader has extra large hex nut pole pieces and instead of one bar magnet, it has three ceramic magnets so this is a hot pickup.
In this video we compare the Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker to a stock Gibson 498r and Montys Guitars Full Monty. We also play the Seymour Duncan Invader in a band mix so you can hear how it sits.

Nice to see a demo where the guitarist actually plays chords and not just leads. Good job.

I love the Invader. I've had a 90s Invader kicking about for the last 20 years or so, it's been in loads of my guitars.
I predominantly play hard rock/metal and it works for me.

They are my favorite "solo guitar" pickups.
The "muddy sound" makes picking higher strings less "icepicky"

people say it’s muddy yeah in the tom delonge guitar it is because it’s mounted on a pickgaurd with the whole bridge and neck setup making the strings really close not allowing much room to have the poles different but I put it in a direct mount guitar that has more room for the pickups to be farther and the poles vary it sounds way more trebly that way I do something similar in my other guitar though i can’t pin those pickups all the way down since those have shorter poles and only one set per coil in fact on that one I stored some of them out of the pickup to accommodate string volume imbalance basically i only have the strings of the weakest volume under a maxed out pole the rest are at least somewhat lower if not purposely removed put away somewhere else in case I switch strings

The first guitar I bought with my own money had one. It was some random Squier Strat that I found at a local music store for like 200 bucks, so I bought and Invader for a little more than it's worth lol. That guitar was pretty sweet though, and ignited my Squier obsession.

More importantly, Saki from Nemophila uses SD Invader in her signature Killer Guitars Empress model and always sounds amazing.

The Invader is a very fun pickup. I've never owned one but plan on getting a set for my Schecter very soon. It's more versatile than it's given credit for, but for cleans you have to coil split because the thing is just too hot to clean up with a volume roll. Even on a clean channel they are too hairy in series. I dig the low end as it keeps the Invader from getting buzzy and annoying.

How do you know this if you’ve never owned one?

  • @fatboysgarage7984
    @fatboysgarage7984 หลายเดือนก่อน

One thing I find that takes out the bite of Invaders is to split them. In one of my guitars, I have individual coil splits and Invaders. My favorite position is the middle with the neck split. It also helps to roll the tone knob down a tiny bit.

I have had the invader. Cool for 80's hard rock sound, or single note riffing or double stop, or death metal. The invader split very well too. I loved their split sound, I could have played them split only and it would have worked most of the time.
You have to set it like 4/64" under smallest treble strings and 3/32" under bass the strings to balance, as a starting point, and then adjust down to taste from there if you wish. I did the mistake to install them like I do with most humbuckers at start, starting at 4/64" on both side ( with strings depressed at last frets) and they sounded mushy and unclear on the bass side installed like that. I didn't liked it at first because of this. They are very strong magneticly. But I learned later how people set them and this improved the sound quite a lot. They sound fat and compressed. They can push an amp.

Love the Invader and actually like the fact that it has presence and mighty low end that connects with the bass. Really dominates and roars in Metal mixes and probably a reason why it remains Karl Sander’s pick up of choice in Nile.

Love these pickups, even ordered a 7 version as they handle lower tunings quite well. Word to the wise- the magnetic pull from these beasts will cause intonation issues if set too close to the strings.

The invader really works well with the presence and clarity of sound that a strat or charvel can produce although to my ears i have gotten bored with it through a mesa rig kind of sounds under instead of over in the presence but still has clarity it is just huge and thick. Even in a basswood guitar (mushy bass and treble yet nice flatline of mids) the invader still has nice presence and highs. i would probably also try any of the other metal humbuckers that seymour duncan makes as well as bareknuckle aftermath and ceramic warpig as well as the holy diver and more. Juggarnauts, ragnarocks etc. D marzio titan and the D activators and all those great ones, the super1,2,&3. and EVO-2! try those they are insane! i bet turn a strat into a real firebreather. And the seymour duncan black winters and nazgul all great bridge pickups especially in a strat or charvel.

I beg to differ! I got this pickup in 1988 and replaced a Duncan Custom. The sales pitch of "bolts of volts" sucked me in. Its loud n clear...lows n highs...but the midrange was so lacking. Maybe they improved it , but the first version was half ass. I've played since I was 11....I'm 59 now. Come at me!
