  • I've just got 2 beautiful natural finish RG670MH (Mahogany) and RG670AH (Ash). Both of them are identical except the bodies are made from different kind of woods. Let's hear how they sound.
    I used Mesa Boogie mini-Rectifier 25 head and 2x12 mesa cab.
    I tried to cover Extreme's "It's a monster" but didn't tune down to Eb.

    I worked at Charvel/Jackson in the mid-eighties. They used poplar for bodies on bolt-ons and maple necks with poplar sides on their thru-neck Jackson's. Apparently, they guitar world swears by this inexpensive wood. I think the "tone woods" is hype. Am, pickup and guitar controls can to all sounds.

    The difference is there, but it's very very small. The Swamp Ash as they say is a teeeny bit brighter. Where you see the biggest difference is usually in the clean tones.

    I would use the mahogany guitar for rhythm and the ash guitar for leads

    The difference really is there. Hard to tell without watching, but it really affects the player more than anyone, and only he/she knows what sound suits them best

    Whoever said that the wood on an electric guitar didn’t make any difference don’t know what the hell there talking about. I thought the mahogany sounded a lot warmer , richer. Love the mahogany.

  • @BrandonDeft

    I can't tell a difference and if there is you can fix it with just about any amp. I went into this loving mahogany but now I truly think it's all about Pick-ups.

    • @DesertScorpionKSA
      @DesertScorpionKSA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't hear much of a difference either. I think the species of body wood makes very little difference in tone. Pickups, scale length, and type of bridge seem to make a big difference in the guitar. Of course, the amp and speakers make a huge difference.

    • @ReddenDoom
      @ReddenDoom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huge difference to me and having owned all mahogany vs mahogany/maple SG's there are differences pickups and amps can't fix.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if someone takes the time to set up the SAME pickup at the same height in two identical guitars, they won't be identical. The wood debate will always be fruitless.

    • @ReddenDoom
      @ReddenDoom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, but they will be in the same ballpark and probably only marginally different. There are times when one 'identical' guitar will just do something special that another wont, but thats a different thing entirely and more often about feel. Woods are like a baseline or foundation, the differences are subtle but you can't really escape them either. Its also worth noting that as the gain goes up the differences become miniscule, on cleans they are more apparent. The point is that putting Gibson pickups into an alder/maple strat wont magically turn it into a Les Paul with the same pickups; there's more going on as you suggest but wood also is a part of that. At the same time I think far too many people get way too into tonewoods, and like everything else, it will probably only really benefit a few. When it comes to choosing identical guitars other than the woods, I think its a much smaller point than guitars that are built differently and also feature different woods.

      Mahogany sounds better with distortion and pushed overdrive, ash sound better for clean there is a big difference but as some other said the amp can easily fool you😜

    I totally believe the wood does not affect tone in a Solid Body. Yes, yes it does in acoustic. It’s a marginal difference in the sustain of the resonant frequencies but the tone in a solid body guitar is all about the strings, the bridge and nut, and mostly, the pickups. It’s OK if you don’t agree with me. But it’s true.

      You are right for the most part... I hear the differences though in the wood.... I guess some people just have better ears than others.

  • @SiddharthKarunakaran
    @SiddharthKarunakaran 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The first time I watched the video, I couldn't tell that there were 2 guitars being played, as I was listening to the audio only. However when I put my eyes into the equation, I could tell that the mahogany had more midrange and treble and sounded smoother. What about you? What difference did you feel with the two guitars in the room?

    • @jem555bkk
      @jem555bkk  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ash is a bit brighter with more pronounced mid/high. Mahogany has a bit more bottom end but not as much mid/high so it sounds smoother. That's what I heard. Thanks for watching.

    • @trentf4891
      @trentf4891 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Siddharth Karunakaran Shouldn't that tell you that there is no difference? You just stated you had no idea of the difference until you realized there were two guitars. You projected your own bias preconceptions when you noticed there were actually two different guitars.

    • @beefnacos6258
      @beefnacos6258 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because some people can hear it.... not everyone can... I hear the differences you're saying that you don't?

  • @redklok585
    @redklok585 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love to properties of both. Ash and mahogany each make up for the missing tonal properties that the other's missing respectively. Anyway, I usually play guitars with ash bodies, but if I could only sneak some mahogany warmth and fullness into the mix at the same time, I wouldn't ever change my sound or look for a new improved one again. It would be my last guitar purchase I would ever need if there was a way to make a mix breed of the two.

    Mahogany=Dark and focused
    Ash=bright and lots of overtones

  • @brandontay2053
    @brandontay2053 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mahogany sounds close to a Gibson Les Paul, with a warm darker sound. Ash sounds closer to a Fender Strat with a brighter but more twangy sound. Personally I'd go with Mahogany as the tone sounds fuller

  • @abutomatto
    @abutomatto 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder about weight. Which one is heavier?? Is weight affects to the tone??

    • @jem555bkk
      @jem555bkk  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      because of this question, I did weigh them on a digital scale. The mahogany is a bit heavier at 3.5 kg while the Ash is 3.3kg. Not much but you can tell the mahogany is a bit heavier carrying them. Whether the weight affect the tone or not, I do not know. Thanks for watching and the question.

    • @abutomatto

      Ash was heavier was my guess but whoa thank you so much for responce really really appreciate it!
