The start of autumn was pretty mild where I live but suddenly all is going to change. After the tropical rain storms, the sunny days are back and the cold is coming with it. Time to give shelter to the orchids that need the warmth.

Por aqui, o inicio do outono foi chuvoso mas cálido. Agora, com o regresso dos dias de sol, chegou também o frio. Tempo de dar guarida dentro de casa ás orquídeas mais friorentas.

Olá Josefina, bom dia. Realmente está um frio, brrrrr. As 6 horas fui lá fora com a Iris para ela fazer as necessidades dela e ela até se despachou rápido, Graças a Deus, pois estavam 6 graus. Felizmente o sol vem lá e essa é a melhor parte, eu adoro o sol. Também gosto de um bom dia de chuva. O que eu não gosto mesmo são dos dias nublados em que nada acontece pois quase parece um desperdício, já que não há sol, ao menos que chova 😂 Beijinhos e um otimo dia de sol 😘😘🌻😊

A very interesting video Fernanda and very easy to watch. Your plants are looking very healthy which is a definite sign of positive cultivation on your part. My Angraecum Crestwood ' tomorrow star ' is flowering in November when it should be flowering in January or February.........just shows that our orchids will come into bloom whenever they feel like it.......thank you for the show and take care,

Thank you, Ed, much appreciated. Plants have been fooled by this mild fall but things have changed. As the clouds went away and the sun is shinning, night temperatures have gone to 6 C although days are still warm. I am glad I already have my orchids well protected indoors. Olá Meri, muito obrigada!!! Sim dá um bocado de trabalho e bastante incomodo quando chega a hora de de regar mas realmente é preferível do que perder as plantas. Esta noite estiveram 6 graus mas logo vai estar sol e o dia vai chegar aos 18 graus. Pior é quando os dias estão nublados e fica escuro muito cedo. O que me custa mais nem é o frio, é o facto de que os dias vão reduzindo de tamanho e não tarda nada vão ter apenas 9 horas, ficando de dia as 8 da manhã e anoitecendo logo apos as 4 da tarde. Eu preciso muito da luz, sem o sol parece que perco energia😄 Mas com boa disposição tudo se suporta melhor, há que fazer por aproveitar as coisas boas. Tenha um ótimo dia amiga Meri, grande abraço para você também.

Obrigada Elisa!! O inverno traz coisas boas também, não é só frio e chuva. Mesmo assim, prefiro o verão em todos os sentidos. Gosto de ter as orquídeas em casa porque estão mais á mão mas não só é mais difícil para regar como é muita preocupação quando há falta de sol, como aconteceu no ano passado. Same procedure on this side of the border 🙄 it felt so cold for me last night, i strughled to go to sleep. And the days are still sunny, so the in and out with some of my orchids is well underway. Today i could not open the door until 1 hr later than usual, and i have to bring the orchids inside one hour sooner than usual as well. I have not felt warm all day! You have made a great exodus or innodus
Stan de Man Espanhol, 34 and counting 👏 What a man !!! 😲 Absolutely amazing, congratulations ❤️❤️❤️ My move was just spot on. The following night it dropped from 17 to 8 C and last night it went down to 6C. A bit too dramatic 😃 I can feel the harsh bite when I come down into the patio with Íris at 6 am 🥶 Luckily, nights are going higher as of tonight, to the two digits, which is more normal to this time of the year. Sunny days make me feel good but I have been wearing warmer cloths for a long time, regardless. I like to feel warm but I don't seem to be able to without dressing like an onion 😅
Talking of opening door, after going out and about with Íris in the mornings I can close the door until it is nice again but not in the evenings. I am training Íris to go out on her own in the evenings which she is already doing but for that I have to keep the door open for her until she is ready which may take us to 8 pm sometimes and in the meantime, unavoidably, I feel the cold coming in my lounge, dropping temps indoors. Nothing is perfect 😅 I don't remember any training with Rufus or Phoenix and they always did their things when they were walked, never in the patio. I suppose it was because when they came, they both had elder and trained dogs to learn from. Also my husband took the responsability then but now he is leaving it to me. How convenient, right? 😕 I hope you are doing well, amiga mia. I already watched your video but I could not comment then, because it was time to get lunch on the table but I going to do it now. That’s the best thing about winter, imho. The fact that the sun is low and comes inside and it’s weak enough so it rarely burns the leaves.

Olá Fernanda, já fiz o mesmo nesta semana.Mas tenho muito menos orquideas, portanto até foi fácil. Ainda bem que temos maridos compreensivos e que acabam por entender esta nossa movimentação o ano todo, não é? A casa fica muito mais cozy com elas cá dentro e diariamente são vistas em pormenor. Não me canso deste hobby, julgo que é também o seu caso. Boa saúde e um inverno suave, é o que lhe desejo.
Olá Clementina, boa noite. Esta noite está menos frio mas ontem e anteontem estava mesmo agreste. Mudei as orquídeas mesmo a tempo. Sim, felizmente podemos trazer as meninas para dentro sem que haja crise familiar, o que é uma grande ajuda 😃 Sim, eu já tenho bastantes, a última vez que contei tinha cerca de 120 já contando com as Cymbidium. O que, na realidade, parece muito pouco comparando com algumas coleções de mais de 300. Apesar de este ano ter descartado algumas que estavam com problemas, devo ter mais algumas do que no ano passado pois também comprei. Um destes dias vou contar outra vez 😃 Obrigada pela visita, Clementina, adorei ter notícias suas. Um ótimo inverno, com muito sol, para si também 😘😘😘😘 Grande abraço 🤗

Hi lovely lady 💐 My winter will go on till end of March which is when spring officially starts but I may only be able to bring orchids outside again around mid April, all depending on night temperatures being 15C or above. But the worst period is December and January because days only have a duration of 9 hours. When days start to get longer in February it gets easier.

An interesting video, Fernanda. It’s always educational to see how other people cope with their climate. I only keep Cymbidiums outside during the summer but I’m struggling to keep slugs and snails away from them. I repotted them recently and all the root tips had been eaten so, naturally, they aren’t thriving. Although orchids can tolerate lower overnight temperatures than are quoted in books, in my experience at least, they can stall. I have three Cattleyas in sheath. Two were in the conservatory, where the overnight temperature was around 14.5C and they didn’t seem to be doing anything. I moved them to a different room, where the temperature is roughly 18C overnight and one has buds showing in both sheaths. The third is developing the sheath now so my fingers are crossed for that one. I usually envy your ability to keep so many outdoors but not when it comes to moving so many, although bringing our big Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) indoors is an entertainment…
Hi Keith, thank you. We had to dig out our Strelizia this summer because it was harming the irrigation valves and it was a hard job and so I can imagine it was not easy for you to bring yours indoors, it should be very heavy.
I agree, although many orchids can survive to lower or hotter temperatures, the stress they are subjected to lowers their metabolism, they may even get into dormancy. So, we better avoid it whenever possible.
My Cymbidium are all growing outdoors, some are under cover but most of them were planted in the ground. I hope they don't have snails 😬 Snails, slugs, catterpillars, yikes, they are terrible 😲
@@FernandaNascimentoOrchids we’re due the first nationwide frost this winter tonight with temperatures in the towns dropping to about -1C. I *think* Cymbidiums can cope with temperatures down to about +5C so, with winter days that won’t get above freezing on the way - sooner or later - I don’t think they’d survive outside. I do try to keep them as cool as possible, keeping them on the floor of the conservatory close to the double doors. I don’t have fans running so the air stratifies in there. It seems there is about a 1C change every foot/30cm so if it’s at a minimum of 15C at 5ft/150cm it will be closer to 10C where they are.

@@FernandaNascimentoOrchids it’s a very generalised statement based on a small sample size so I wouldn’t take the numbers as definitive but it’s true in general. I perhaps need to buy another max/min thermometer that records those temperatures to check it properly. Research engineer? Moi? 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Olá Fernanda. Na natureza as orquídeas não têm as raízes apertadas, por isso a historia que contam sobre as orquídeas gostarem de estar apertadas no vaso não faz sentido. A única explicação que encontro para isso, é que se estiverem em vasos pequenos, as raizes enxugam mais rapidamente, prevenindo o apodrecimento. No caso da hidroponia, o tamanho do vaso é indiferente pois as raízes habituaram-se desde o inicio a estar bastante húmidas. O importante é não deixar faltar o oxigénio na agua, mudando a agua com alguma frequencia. Beijinhos 😘😘😘

It’s that time of year again. I don’t enjoy the cold weather so much to be honest. 😅 but what can we do? … watering must be a bit af a challenge now I guess? Do you soak your orchids? It does look nice though! ❤
Hi Eelke, yeah winter is not the happiest time of the year but, you are right, nothing we can do about it. I cannot even complain, other people have to endure worst. However despite the milder climate here, we feel the cold more than northern countries because we don't heat our houses the same way. Heating our homes is still a luxury many cannot have as energy is so expensive and we tend to do it only in the evenings. Anyway, what I hate the most are the shorter days especially when they are dull because it becomes even darker 😄
As for watering, I soak the orchids the same way I always do even when they are outdoors, only fewer times a week. Indoors I usually do it once a week or every 10 days depending it is sunny or not. When they are indoors I only have to be extra careful not to wet the floor or the furniture which takes me longer.

Hi Justin, thank you for commenting. Yes, I had in mind letting my purpuratas outdoors but after all, I decided to bring them indoors as well. They are more resistant to cold than other Cattleyas but I have space for them indoors, so why let them get the extra stress outdoors? Inside my house temperature is cool enough, anyway, usually around 15 to 17 C this time of the year. We only warm up the space in the evenings with the fireplace. Unless it is too cold or too humid, we don't use the central heating because it is no use. Our door to the garden is open during the day, especially now that our new german shepherd dog is just a puppy. Have a wonderful SUNday, Justin 💖💖💖

I have a great idea to expand your indoors grow space! Have you considered trashing the Phalaenopsis? Imagine how many beautiful Cattleyas you could put there instead? It's really worth it! 😈 Then you can keep the couch for "little" Iris (SHE GREW SO MUCH!!!)
Jokes aside, LOVE to see all of your Cattleyas in the sun. It just makes me happy.
Im previous years I have moved them indoors around the first week of November which is when it gets cooler but this year nights have been so mild that I waited till last minute. Right after we had a few nights of 6/8 C but the days still were warmish, around 18/20 C. It got cooler yesterday and so it is time to light the fireplace which we are also doing about 3 weeeks later than usual.
Hey, your idea about enlarging the space is a great idea 💡 I thought the same, in case not all my favourite high light lovers would fit it in the lounge. Well, not really trashing them 😅 but maybe take them to another room. If I have ever need to "sacrifice" any, the first to go are the monster size standard type Phalaenopsis which would not mind going to my spare room where light is not as bright, I mean, it is east facing but direct morning sun is blocked by the house on the other side of the street. Ahahaha, I liked that one, polar bears are so fluffy too, great coats 😂 We are still having nice days of 17/20 C but nights dropped momentarily to 9 C, too cold for November. Tomorrow nights will be slightly warmer but still too cold for me. I may have been a bird of the tropics in my previous life 😅🤣
