    Holy smokes I would have never guessed the 2022 WRX would even be close to an STi of any year. It's crazy what just a change in power/torque curves with a new engine and gearing can do. Wow. This makes me even more excited to finally receive my ordered WRX next week!

      This has been my issue with reviewers. They kept talking about how it feels grown up or this or that but weren't keen on comparing it to what came before. I wish more big names channels actually did this race. I'm waiting for Sam CarLegion to do a legit drag race against a VA STi and WRX. This is what people want to know. I wish I had a drag strip to do this stuff myself.

      @@HeavyMetalWRX Thank you so much for this video. It's really top tier comparison and cool to see how quick it really is for being an AWD family sedan. It does make me feel a bit better going with the WRX because like you said, literally NO OTHER reviewer has done any sort of comparison to past generations. Any time I see a "drag race" it's against the Elantra N and the WRX driver isn't that good or something. The Elantra N absolutely smokes the WRX in most videos.. Like I'm talking multiple car lengths/semi lengths and something doesn't seem right about that. Yes, the WRX is going to be a tad slower and I know that, but not as slow as some of those other review videos. Only video that comes close and is realistic is Savagegeese's 4 car comparison between the WRX, Elantra N, GTI and Civic Si. Thank you again, this is great :)

      Kinda related but not lol.. I traded my STi for the new BRZ. The STi was e-tuned stage 1 w/ a COBB cat-back & the AWD & sounds it made may have added to the drama of punching out of a corner. But over all, granted I have some super light wheels & it is on some RE71rs, the BRZ feels about the same down to the same exhilarating 2nd gear punch out of a hairpin. Even passing on the freeway seems quicker. In stock form the STi is just old tech and doesn't quite put all of its power down like the modern vehicles do. My comparison & opinion however is drawn more from auto-x and mountain driving bcoz neither are impressive in a straight line. Be it WRX, STi, BRZ, Golf R.. w/e~ I feel these are canyon carvers @ heart and highway pulls and dig racing never tell the whole story.

      The Wrx has been neck and neck with the sti in strait line speed since 2009 when they put a different turbo in. Now the fa24 should be faster than a 20 year old engine design. I’ve owned 2 Wrx and have a sti. The Wrx are cheaper to make faster, the sti is a much more complete drivers car. It was also much more satisfying putting in the extra work to build power in the sti, however it does get very pricey. All in all they are both slow and in stock form will get smoked by a soccer mom with a lead foot.

    2020 sti owner here I test drove the 23 wrx the other day it was nice sounds system is awesome (sti sucks). That was the only thing I preferred about it. It just seemed to soft and easy to drive. This is all true. The WRX wasn't meant to replace the STi, just the outgoing VA WRX. The transmission is still cable driven and the suspension is softer. Still for 30k you can't go wrong.

    Caution: thus is long but if you want some solid info & opinion from a LONG time Subaru, Mitsubishi, Audi guy who knows history since Group B and recalls every detail of the WRX from 1991 to present, read on from a fresh perspective you won't have read before.
    Right off, weird references. US didn't get the bugeye STI. And it didn't replace the 22B, it replaced the GC8. That GC8 could be had as a coupe...and it was the coupe that was rallying. The hawkeye was initially VERY poorly received because A) it had the Tribeca face everyone loathed, B) people scoffed at the Limited with its leather, premium style and C) the "Subaru is losing the script" vs "it's not refined enough" paradox hit right at this time. Hatch love? Subaru listened to complaints and gave us a hatch in 2008...then people bitched "where is the F'ing sedan...I want the wing!" But there was the other paradox...that Limited? It did away with a spoiler. And this kicked off the "spoilers are for boy-racers" and the "wing delete" trend was launched. BTW, 2008-2010, nobody really bitched that the STI got big fender flares...in 2011, everyone that got an STI was pissed this visual distinction disappeared, as the WRX got the fenders.
    Fact is, Subaru really did nothing wrong. In the 90's the homologation cars were built and sold in countries that actually cared about rallying...not NASCAR. The formula of lowly Impreza with badass drivetrain was loved...but love turned into whining about cheap plastic. Shit, when the STI arrived in the US - without a radio - people whined. From this point forward Subaru was in a no win situation. "I love raw" turned into "cheap plastic and where's the heated seats." I lived through all of this, and have a good memory. For young people...ya just have zero clue...it's just all "history I've heard about."
    > "Ugly"...Uh, that was the charm. In fact, what Subaru is sexy?? Again, when the WRX was adored, it was based on a lowly, truly ugly Impreza. Verdict: Asinine complaint.
    > Tail lights are "ugly". In 2021, the complaint across the board was "nice Honda Civic". The cure? "If only Subaru connected the red across the back." The problem? Lack of creativity. Me: a nice honeycomb pattern red reflective tape spanning that black trim. I copied various Photoshop renderings people loved. Postes pics on Reddit...and the "enthusiasts" weren't even keeping up with the car in 2021...none were even aware of the "Civic" complaints and my (awesome) fix got mixed reviews. Verdict: you cannot please WRX buyers - they are not Subaru fans.
    > "The slant on the tail lights". Anyone genuine Subaru fan would have seen the tail light design over FIVE YEARS AGO on the VIZIV concept.
    > Rear bumper: again...the VIZIV showed us for five years what it woukd look like. However I will concede something here - something only those aware of the VIZIV would know. The concept car had big dual exhaust tips located in those far ends of the bumper (where the reflectors and partial/functional vents are.) Subaru should have ditched this area when they didn't put pipe outlets there. And, they should have the brought the height of the black down. Ideal look? Look no further than the BRZ. Nevertheless, it's liveable. (And learn how to work on your cars, people. Do your own painting of areas like this. Stop paying Aeroflow Dynamics a fortune.)
    > Something I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE about this review? It points out the fact buyers modify these cars! So much complaining can be voided by just admitting this. Within 5 days I had a muffler delete axleback. People bitch about the GT getting all the good stuff...OMG. Active suspension? We all put coilovers in...I had them on my last four cars. The Recaros? Well, the whining reviewers find a way to complain (oh, lord hp me) but if you want Recaros, buy some. The entry level are affordable - I put used Recaros in my STI and swapped the STI seats to my Outback. The SPT? It shifts faster than you - deal with it. The steering response adjustment? The car has a greatly improved ratio...besides, seriously boy racers I barely EVER heard complaints even when it had a slow rack and people autocrossed it. And Eyesight? Every enthusiast I've met calls it nanny tech and says they'd turn it off. Verdict: all this shows how ridiculously inconsistent people are about this car.
    > The last comment was PURE GOLD. "You wouldn't buy an STI that looks like this? I call bullshit." You're my hero! Besides, just like people complain they can't afford the GT, how would all the kids afford an STI? Finally, anyone that has a genuine understanding of how automobile development works would 100% understand the decision on the STI. Bummer, sure. End of the world, hardly.
    Too bad winter arrived. Because when it's warm I have plans for this car I've seen no one doing. I can't quite swing a full rear bumper fabrication. I could afford it (if it worked) but I don't have the $ to spend and have it fail.

      @@happyhunting7837 He's saying that if you try launching the WRX too many times you're going to do serious damage to the transmission. The STI comes with a MUCH more robust transmission, and can "handle" being launched better than the WRX. That being said, neither of them should be launched at all, its terrible for both transmission, and beating the sh!t out of STIs is the main reason its almost impossible to find one that's not a thousand miles away from blowing up or needing the transmission replaced.

      Because the rest of the Car community see the new wrx as a cross trek with a turbo lol which is exactly what it is
      The 2022 wrx is soft, full of body roll, dampened driver feedback and sacrifices driver experience for the ability to appeal to the masses 😅
      I bought a 2018 Sti as a winter daily and as soon as the new wrx came out , my car jumped in value buy about 8 grand
      The new engine , gear box, and suspension feel like a civic si
      And for fairness, my 18 sti isn’t exactly what I’d call a “sports car”, more a quick daily that handles well
      The new wrx
      Well that’s just commuter level

    • @HeavyMetalWRX
      @HeavyMetalWRX  ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@pinnnkyton actually I beg to differ about the "rest of the car community". I am in 2 car clubs , a general car club and a Subaru club. Most of the Subaru drivers do not like the WRX. In the general car club it is overwhelmingly popular as a new car. Especially with people who have driven or owned a Subaru but didn't engage in it's cult like following. Nothing about the new WRX feels like a civic because it actually feels like a STi. With the 2.4 you have a deeper tone, the new transmission gears are shorter from 1-4 like a STi. The suspension is still WRX based which is stiffer than a civic but softer than a STi. As for driver feel the dual electronic pinion steering does have a bit less feedback but it is far more precise than the previous WRX which makes it more engaging to throw around the corners. When you look at one individual part of a car it's easy to nit pick. All the parts coming together is what makes this an objectively better WRX than the previous generation in every way except maybe gas mileage. 🤷‍♂️

    I just drove a 21 sti and a 23 wrx today. So i got the perfect chance to compare them.
    Sti - raw, loud, you feel and hear everything. It demands your attention and inputs are sensitive. The throttle is very touchy, the clutch is touchy, the gear box is notchy. I enjoyed it. It felt fast and had some nice feeling to rolling on boost. But a bit tiresome to drive as it is loud. The suspension is stiff. The seats are okay - a bit firm. The rumble - to die for. What a sound and feeling on a cold start. That ej25 is special.
    Wrx - refined, easy and linear power. Easy clutch, gearbox relatively the same, but perhaps a bit smoother. Less demanding. Stiff suspension and sway bars, but it's not punishing. Very quiet and easy power, meaning it doesnt make all the sound and grunts of the ej, but suddenly you're moving!
    Stock exhaust isnt terrible actually - there is rumble. Just need unequal length headers to get some more rumble.
    Overall, sti is raw, demanding, and punishing. Loud interior. A true drivers car engaging all of your senses. The wrx is fun, easy going, but has potential to be a wild animal. Refined and feels solid and predictable.
    Love your vids. Going to test drive a brz (well an 86 at toyota) next week and then decide between brz or wrx.

      You are absolutely right! All the points you posted are 100% correct. The WRX was never meant to replace the STI. With today's technology the ne wwrx just ended up being a better daily drive than the previous gen WRX. This also meant what it rivals some of the STIs features. I'm sure the next STi will be even more engaging. I do have a stock WRX vs stock BRZ video on my channel. That might make your decision even harder! Tbh if you have a family the WRX is the way to go. If you don't or can have a third car then the BRZ is great. Of course when mods come into play the WRX is just waaaaaay better of a bargain.

      @@HeavyMetalWRX I'll go watch it. I don't and won't have kids, so I just need a car to hold either luggage for small trips and golf clubs, lol. The gr86 limited edition (orange on black) was plain sexy. Amazing lines. The one thing that I'm hung up on is the ability and ease of tuning. So much can be done with the turbo fa24 ads you're well aware. The NA is like your old school (but cool) exhaust, headers, intake, and fuel, but minimal gains. I'm not looking for the fastest car - I'm looking for an engaging car that I look forward to driving everyday and can handle being pushed to the limit every now and then.
      I have a GLI right now and although tunes are abundant, there isn't a ton of support for suspension, brakes, and those sorts of things and the cost INSANE amounts of money because of sensors and VW almost makes their newer cars difficult to work on, on purpose. Eg to fit new coilovers on the front, you have to not only disassemble your brakes and LCA, you have to take apart the drive shaft from the housing to drop the knuckle far enough. Then you need triple square wrenches, AND you need a sensor delete kit for the dynamic chassis control. What a joke!

      @@HeavyMetalWRXso I drove a gr86 today because there was one available. Comfortable seating position, shifter was shorter, but tougher to feel what gear I was in, clutch had a lot of slack, engine was surprisingly torquey in the city and revving it out was great but coming from a turbo car, the high rpm seemed to flatten out with respect to power like it stopped pulling at 6500 instead of redline. Probably just not what I am used to. The cluster, in my opinion, isn't great. Too small and the steering wheel controls aren't great. Visibility is decent. I can tell that the back end will be lively - for the brz just a simple swaybar swap will make it more playful.
      I have $$ down on a brz which is waiting to be delivered from the port - excited to drive it. But it has to really excite me because the 23 wrx is such a well-rounded car.

    The looks of any car is very subjective. What may look good to someone may not look good to others (so long as you're happy, that's all that matters). I think Subaru's biggest mistakes were 1) how much they changed the look of the car, IMO the car itself looks nice, but it doesn't have that rally inspired look from the factory (people have made mods to car with new grills and spoilers etc which makes it look very aggressive) 2) the horsepower the car produces from factory and the torque. Even though the car is faster and more responsive than the previous generation, a lot of people won't even go to check out the car because it on has 3 more HP. I think Subaru should've made the HP at least 290 and bring the torque up to 290. Subaru disappointed many WRX fans. 3) Arguably the biggest mistake was canceling the STI, to this day it still makes 0 sense to me as to why they did that. They have disappointed many STI fans (me included) over that decision. If you're going to out, at least go out with a Bang.
    Again though, this is just my IMO, for all the new gen WRX owners, congratulations. The car itself is a great car, looks nice, and is sporty. Don't let the opinion of others get to you! At the end of the day, it's what puts a smile on your face when you see your toy in the garage.

    • @HeavyMetalWRX
      @HeavyMetalWRX  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are all great points but I do feel like subjectivity is the main culprit. The car is objectively a better WRX in every way than the outgoing car. Stronger engine, electronic boost controller, meral turbo inlet, bigger intercooler, standard led lights, beefier transmission, roomier, more internal volume. As for the "rally inspiration" this is again objectively better. People hate the plastic but having plastic fenders you don't have to worry about paint means you'll actually go off-road more. The car also sits .5inches higher than the previous and ground clearance is important for "rallying". Also the gears are short almost the same close ratio as the STi. As for the LOOK of "rally" both the VA WRX and STi did not come with any special differentiating factors from a normal passenger car to make it look more "rally"...besides the STi wing which wings are easily added via aftermarket or even from Subaru directly. Now the STi situation for 2022...they didn't outright cancel it....they said it will just not be available for the next 2 model years. There is a rumor that a new STi drivetrain will be unveiled at the Tokyo auto show this year.

    • @Arminzzgg
      @Arminzzgg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HeavyMetalWRX I've heard rumors of Subaru bringing back the STI, which I hope they do. Although the sources I read and saw (at least in the beginning) was that the STI has been canceled, or at least the combustion engin STI. Subaru said they are looking at making an EV version of the STI, which I hope they don't go that route. It's a waiting game at this point.

In case you don't know that's the largest stock location turbo ever made for a Subaru. Forced performance doesn't make it anymore because they think a turbo that big should maybe be rotated LOL.
      Anyways I drove spiritedly all the time and was always down to go for a run with someone or hit up some mountain roads.
      Living in Cincinnati I went with all season tires as it was my only car and daily driver and I didn't have an extra set of wheels plus it only snows like three times a year so. But though I made some sacrifice in terms of not going for a true summer and a true winter I decided to go for versatility because I ended up taking that car from Ohio to California to Colorado to Arizona and not to mention vacations and road trips. And everything was done to that car.. the whole suspension was done brakes power everything. And before you hate on the all seasons these Michelin pilot sport All season 4 of the same tire that came on the c8 Corvette stock. Not bad.
      I even emailed Force performance and ask them how long their turbo supposed to last and they said this is a track turbo so if you get 6 months to a year out of it you're doing well. Drove on that setup for a couple years. And before that I was running a BCP x500 Plus at 507whp.
      Yeah I spent a lot on parts but nothing that is to be unexpected when you have a 17-year-old car making $500 horsepower that your daily that's subjected to snow rain salt rust and the stress of daily driving.
      To be fair the transmission never gave me a problem the belt motor never gave me a problem the turbo never gave me a problem. All issues were ancillary and honestly a lot of them wouldn't have been there if the car wasn't in the rust belt.. keep in mind I bought it used with 117k coming from New York so it was already rusted.
      But nothing ever broke while I was driving it always started when I needed it too it always got me from point A to point b I drove it like I was tracking it when I felt like it. Well yea the price point for the STi allows it to have considerably better standard options. The big reason for this comparison is to see the generational difference in the engine. Yes the new WRX is softer than the STi but it's not as soft as the 19-21. It's actually a pretty stiff suspension and chassis. A good upgrade over the previous generation VB.

    Kinda silly to put a brand new low milage motor up against a motor that has years/ x # of tens of thousands of miles of carbon deposits; which severely hinder performance. When I got my 2020 STI brand new, when I hit 800 miles on the OD to start opening her up, I was walking 2017 STIs with stage 1&2 tunes but they had like 10-20k miles on their motors. It be better to compare the two if they both have similar milage. The whole of a STi is lower than 310. The whole of the new WRX is closer to its crank hp. New WRX is severely underreporting as shown by many different dynos. It's anywhere between 250-275whp. Plus the gearing is different allowing the car to do some surprising stuff. This isn't an ego thing it's just informational. I wish more reviews were doing comparisons in a professional environment so we can see. We are by now means professionals but I will be meeting with more STi owners to redo these tests and get more results.

      Well I'm not a Subaru salesperson so there's no selling here. The video is purely for entertainment and paper math science. There is no malicious intent here. It's just to show the differences and what is possible in the performance department. To be clear, my intent isn't to show that the STi sucks or anything...I love all Subarus. Prior to this I had a VA WRX that I used to track and autocross. I loved every minute of it. The intent is to show what is new and how it compares. If we get a STi in 2024 this FA24 is what will be under the hood and this styling is what will probably be used. It's also a video to remind the community that "subie bros" love to hate every new design until the next model comes out. I was there for the VA reveal at STl auto show and everyone shat on it. The VB with the new Subaru global platform is in a different league when it comes to the engine and the chassis. The only thing that might be better is the transmission in the sti.
