✂️ I previously shared a video tutorial on how to sew a cotton clothesline rope basket. Building on that tutorial, I'd like to teach you how to embroider on your rope basket using your embroidery machine.

Clothesline baskets or bowls have been around for a while. And, for some reason, I stayed away from them. I think I was afraid my sewing machine just wouldn't be able to handle the bulk of the cotton clothesline rope.
But, guess what? I was totally wrong!
Not only have I made a number of these DIY and easy to sew (once you know a couple of tips) cotton clothesline baskets. But, I've also made some that I added embroidery designs to and some where I've used colored thread.
You can even have fun with the rope and add designs to the outside of the baskets. Plus, you can make them round, oval, short or tall.
I gotta warn you though - once you make one basket, you'll want to make more! Then you'll want to make coasters, placemats, mug rugs, rugs, and the list goes on!

Did you have to smash it down some. Mine kept getting hung up and not moving freely. I was so frustrated. It doesn't see that there is a pressure foot adjuster on my machine. It is a beautiful project. Thanks for sharing.
I did not have to smash down the rope. I did use 100% cotton rope that has a cotton core. Is that what you are using? And is your problem occurring when you are sewing the rope or when embroidering on the rope?

Thank you! You can sometimes find great deals on used machines. Also, as newer models are released, the price on older models decrease.
Thank you for making the video! Does the spray adhesive leave a sticky residue on the bottom of the basket? If it does how do you wash it away?
Once the spray adhesive dries, it is not sticky.
Hi Brenda! Your video makes this look so smooth and easy! I have had nothing but trouble doing this exact design using the 7mm cotton cording and tried both an 11 and 14 needle. My thread tends to bunch up on the bottom so I increased the top thread tension with some success, but I continue to have problems with my needles breaking even though I have slowed the speed right down. Any suggestions? Is it possible that I have the cord wound too tightly to the zig zag stitch is too tight? I’m assuming that would make the base denser and perhaps be the cause of some of my problems. I love the concept and am stubbornly trying to make this work. Any thoughts / Suggestions? Thanks in advance!
I would think if you use a close zigzag stitch that could certainly make the rope denser and potentially cause problems with trying to embroider. Also it’s helpful to use a soft clothesline rope. Let me know how it goes!
Thanks for the video. I bought the rope you used but used wash away stabilizer. I think I'll try the tear away because once my rope got wet and dried, it changed colors and almost looks rusty in spots. Not sure I like that look.

@@TheBirchCottage I'm not sure what the brand is. I bought it from my local sewing machine shop. The packaging has their store name on it but no other name. I know they also sell Floriani stabilizer but at the time I bought my stabilizer, they didn't have Floriani but I would imagine what I bought would be similar to Floriani.

I would love your advice. Made a few coasters today. That was great. Wanted to machine embroidery on them. I used a tear away that has a paper you score off to expose a sticky surface. Put coaster on that. Used size 11 embroidery needle. Thread kept breaking. Changed from Madeira thread to Isochord. Thread continued to break. Are there designs that are specific to rope projects? I do not think dense designs would work.
Lorraine, there are designs that Embroidery Library recommends for rope projects. You definitely don’t want to use a dense design. I’m also not familiar with the stabilizer you used. I used a tear away stabilizer with an adhesive spray. I hope this helps!

Hi, just found your video. I have some questions. I did some coasters and used wash away top stitch stabalizer, had to use a 90 needle. What type of back stabalizer did you use? Medium or heavy? TIA
I used a tear-away stabilizer on the back. Some people actually use wash-away on the bottom and tape the rope coaster to the stabilizer to help hold it in place. I use a spray adhesive and often use painter’s tape as well to help hold the rope on the stabilizer.

I haven’t made any rope bowls as yet but love the idea of embroidering them. My main concern is that I have a new Brother V7 machine and was worried I might damage it by sewing rope. Did you have any problems initially and did you reduce the pressure on the foot. Thank you for sharing xx
Hi, Chris. I sewed the rope with my Janome 8200 using a denim needle. Had absolutely no problems stitching the rope.
Embroidery was a different story. I have the Brother PE770 and don’t have the ability to make any adjustments. What I learned was:
- Choose designs that are NOT dense.
- Choose designs that won’t have a lot of satin stitching.
- Choose designs that won’t have a lot of embroidery right in the middle where your rope begins as that area is tighter and denser than the rest of the rope area.
So, at first, I broke a lot of needles. Good news is, you get to learn from my trial and error. It really is a fun, easy, and creative little project. People have gotten really creative by adding fabric, beads, buttons, spools, and even variegated thread. Have fun!

I would definitely stay away from dense designs. You may also want to try using a jeans needle if you do decide to work with a more dense design.
Does the adhesive on the bottom stay sticky after removing the tear away stabilizer?
It is tacky, but dries to be not tacky within a few hours.
I have a Brother PE300 embroidery machine, can I use this to embroider on a rope basket? Also, what size needle do you use to embroider, to sew the basket you use a 90/14 but it doesn't state what needle is best for embroidering.
I don’t have that machine but I assume you could. I used a 75/11 embroidery machine needle.
I have a PE 770 also, But I am having multiple needle breaks and top thread breaks... What size/type needles are you using?
Angela, I use a 75/11 embroidery machine needle. You could also try a denim needle.
What do you use to finish the back of the embroidery so it looks nice?

how would I embroider on the SIDE of an already made rope bowl from target?
Boy, that is a good question! You would need to be able to secure the rope basket to the hooped stabilizer and keep the rest of the basket out of the way so the design can be embroidered. You can use clips, tape, spray adhesive - or all of the above.

what needle do you use for your embroidery machine, i keep breaking mine.
Hi, Liza. I have found that an 80/12 titanium needle (I buy Organ brand) works best as the needle is stronger and less likely to break. If you have the ability to slow your stitch speed down, that will help as well.
