    357 magnum for both. You don't need high mag capacity for SHTF. You get wide load performance. You get reliability in a revolver pair (snub and full size) and a lever carbine. some times the old ways are best!

      @mkshffr4936 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good choice, especially if you count .38 spl for light loads.

      exactly. same projectiles, same lee loader kit in your pack, same powders. same primers. no large rifle primers to find, 9mm will be scarce because its most popular.

      357 mag for handgun, which can be thrown into hunting service either in a beefy handgun with a hot loaded round, or in a lever gun if that’s allowed. For rifle I’d just do 223 and give up a few hundred yards of range and accuracy but the right bullets will still get you out longer than you’d ever need to shoot

      See I would say almost the same, but different spin. I would say 9mm for both. I have dropped whitetail deer multiple times easily with a 9mm carbine. That carbine accepts high capacity Glock magazines. Then I have a Glock 19 for my self defense pistol, which again takes 9mm, and accepts the exact same magazines. No need to figure out which magazine goes to which. Also if you look at the velocity and ft lbs of 9mm out of a carbine, it is on par with 357 mag out of a decent size revolver, and as we both agree, 357 mag has plenty of power. So a 9mm carbine rifle will put anything down in the lower 48 states with proper shot placement. Also I can consistently hit a 10" paper plate at 150 yards with my 9mm carbine easy. Also I can load them up to 147 grain, slap a suppressor on them, and do some silent work.

      @@pscallahanso because something is popular, it will be not around? I'm not following this logic. So because F150s are popular there won't be any if SHTF? What happens when you run out of .357? You think you are going to find it laying around? Also you shouldn't bank on getting supplies in a SHTF situation. You should be prepared BEFORE. I can stock up a TON more 9mm for the same money compared to .357. Plus as you pointed out, because a lot of people run 9mm, when they drop, you just acquired more ammo. How many do you think will have .357? Plus come on, how do you tactical reload a wheel gun? Please don't say moon clips or speed loaders.

    I’m liking the grendel and would definitely be high on my list. I guess it would depend on if ammo availability was a consideration. If it is the 308 would win out just for that reason. It’s the reason I got a 308. No other reason. If ammo is always available and easy to find it would be the grendel. Handgun would be 22lr. Easy to use and easy to stock up on. At handgun distances it’s probably enough. It’s dirty so cleaning often is a requirement 🤷🏽‍♂️

    I live at the mercy of modern medicine, so I do not look at this scenario for me.... But why not speculate...
    I would have to say, it is a toss up between 9mm & 10mm on the pistol caliber, and 5.56 and 308 on the rifle side for me, because that is what I have.
    I have both 9mm pistols, and PCC's; & I have 10mm pistols and PCC's... And I have both 5.56 & .308 in the rifles...
    I think I like the increased performance of the 10mm over 9mm and same for 308 over 5.56, but I can see the drawbacks of the heavier guns and ammo as well.
    I do think, having the PCC's available kinda changes things for me.🤷‍♂ Good discussion👍

    Accuracy and precision trump capacity and power in my opinion. There are exceptions to that statement, but it’s a good general rule of thumb. With that said, the most accurate and precise handgun I’ve ever owned was a .357 revolver. So, that would be my choice for the handgun round. The rifle choice…I have to go with .308.

      There's a reason the two cartridges are second only to 12 gauge and .22lr because if you let me have a shotgun ... it's gonna be 12 gauge and .22lr 😆

    9mm for both .45ACP and .45long colt both of them have had gun and rifle capabilities, for shooting it is the .45's. 9mm spent brass and unspent cartridges, both found and bought intact will be available, .45ACP, think 1911 spent brass, and .45long can be found. be sure you can reload any of them. magazine capacity is not critical, it is not irrelevant but not as critical as .556 r other .22 based center fire shells.

  • @Steven-gv1ke
    @Steven-gv1ke หลายเดือนก่อน

    9mm out of a rifle hits at the same ft lbs as a 357... Just saying... Also you can load up a 147 grain, and slap a suppressor on it for silent work. Me personally i want 9mm for both. I would run subsonic (147 grain) with a suppressor on PCC with a 8" barrel and 33 round glock mags while wearing heavy camo. I would avoid all confrontations unless I absolutely was forced into it. I remember reading a book once decades ago, can't remember the name now, but the guy was ex military and said "you win 100% of the fights you never get involved in". At the time I thought it was dumb, but as ive got older it makes a lot more sense. I would never need a super long range firearm in SHTF situation because I will not be seen or mess with anyone unless they are right up on me. My 9mm PCC can handle anything under 150 yards and i honestly see no need to engage anything (in SHTF) beyond that. If someone sees me further than 150 yards, my camo wasn't right and i failed in a lot of other ways before that point. Now all that said, when thermal gets very affordable, this logic won't work.

    Not that either is the best or the worst in their category, but the no brainer is .308 and 9mm. Both cartridges are capable of taking game, both are easy to shoot and won't beat you to death. Loaded ammo and components are widely available for both.There are tiny 9mm carry guns with good capacity all the way to high capacity 9mm pistols and Pistol Caliber Carbines. The .308 can be had in short AR 10 pistols and rifles, and now there is the light weight Ruger SFAR rifle. A .308 bolt gun to round things out and you are covered for anything from up close and personal and concealment to big game hunting and long range.

    Limiting myself to calibers I like to shoot I would like 5.56 for self defense, but, (even though I'm not a hunter), I don't feel it's the best hunting round so I would probably go with 7.62x39. Almost every pistol in my safe shoots 9mm so that's my handgun caliber choice.
    I first thought you would pick 308, but then decided it might not be the best for self defense so I thought you might go with 7.62x39 and, like everyone else, figured you would go with 10mm. Was surprised you chose 9mm, but you gave good reasons.
    Off topic: I have to buy a new Vedder belt. The one I have is great except after I bought it I went on a diet and lost 25lbs. Now it's too big. Love the belt (and my LIghtTuck) so I'm buying the same one in a smaller size.

    If I was pressed to go with one round for each the 357 magnum would be the pistol round. The rifle choice is the interesting option. 6mm ARC would a choice. As would the Grendel. However, 7mm-08 or 6.5 CM are options as well. In the end I would be torn between 6mm ARC and 6.5 CM. With me leaning more towards the ARC.

      @@thegundungeon If this question would have been asked prior to Covid and the Russian ammo sanctions. My answer for rifle would have been an unequivocal, 6.5 Grendel. It’s why I had 6 different ARs chambered in it ranging from 10.5 - 24”. And a 20” Howa mini action. The ARC is rapidly taking its place.

    S&W Model 327 eight shot N Frame... Can use .357; .38 spl; and 38S&W Long (or Short). Don't need or want a rifle because a Beretta 1301T 12 gauge can do anything a rifle can do out to 100-150 yards... and that's as far as I can see at my age. Hard to shoot birds with a 5.56, 6.5, or .308.

    9mm as that’s the caliber of the small Glocks I’d prefer to carry.
    .308 because there’s elk and moose around here. Also there’s some really slick .308 AR10 platform rifles that are quite controllable.
    If I lived in an area where deer were the biggest animal I’d be hunting I’d go for 5.56 in a heartbeat. That’s what I would prefer for social purposes.

    Sooo if I have the 12ga that effects what rifle I would choose because if I can hunt with buck shot and slugs then I'm using the rifle purely as a fighting weapon so I'm going 556 for ammo capacity and availability. Probably go 10mm on the handgun I agree you can shoot it faster however that means you run out of ammo faster so think I'd prefer more damage per round with still having the high capacity of something like a xdm
