I've never lived under the one caliber mindset (especially pistols). Some years ago, I was buying 40 cal at crazy low prices, while I was in the aisles listening to 9mm only's crying about out of stock or WAY over priced boxes, if they were on the shelf. Didn't need to buy 9mm since I bought it at those 40 cal prices before panic buying was a thing. Funny side note, I was buying 45 acp cheaper than 9mm at that time also. Good times.

Totally understand. Powders , primers are just damn crazy. I got a 5000 pack of Winchester SRP for $117.00 in 2017 and now they cost that for 1000.
I'm lucky right now because 2 gun dealers( shops,stores) are closing out. 35% Off on all products with cash. Every pay day I go and get 2 or 3 lbs of powder to stock up. Never enough, right !

I've never felt the need to panic buy. I always maintain a good stock of what I use and I maintain it. When a shortage rears it's ugly head and seems imminent or actually materializes I've never batted an eye. If I want to go shooting then I go shooting. When the market calms down then I replenish stock. It drives me crazy when we are headed to the range but we first have to stop at the store so my son can pick up a couple of boxes of ammo.
Are ammo shortages manufactured? Maybe, to a point, but I feel there are other factors that contribute including the panic buying. Vista Outdoor sends out a letter saying they are raising prices due to a gun powder shortage. The price for _everything,_ from _all_ manufacturers goes up. There’s a little panic buying. Prices go up. Shelves get thinner and there’s more panic buying and prices go up. The consumers get hold of themselves, stop panic buying and the price comes down - a little - and stays there. There doesn’t seem to be a gun powder shortage today. Where’s the Vista Outdoor letter saying they are lowering prices because there is plenty of gun powder?
The government bans imports from certain countries and prices go up. The government threatens to ban this or restrict that and prices go up. The rogue ATF unconstitutionally tries to create and enforce it’s own laws and prices go up. Places like California slap an unconstitutional tax on guns and ammo and prices go up. They all tend to contribute to panic buying and panic buying encourages more panic buying.
Government involvement can be fought to a point. (Has been and currently is. The Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that Constitutional rights (like the 2A) can’t be singled out for special taxation. (As California has done.)) Manufacturer and vendor greed is more difficult. The best solution for this is to do what you and I do. Build an inventory and maintain it. If everyone kept sufficient stock on hand then manufacturers and vendors would find it much more difficult to manipulate the market.

I went to an estate sale (of sorts) where a widow was selling her deceased husbands ammo today. ...I ended up buying basically everything she had, at ~50% off. Did I need any of it? Nope, but I felt like helping out since she was also selling her house, & there was a lot of ammo that she didn't know what to do with
