beautiful... congratulations for the performance... guys we are waiting for the video of the song played by Mike... was that the only one recorded? In my opinion he recorded videos of all the tracks of the new album and drumeo is happy to spread other contents of Mike Portnoy for the next year!! In the meantime we wait with enthusiasm😑
@@coconejococonejo I'd bet anything they're a fellow millennial, in which case we've aged beyond petty concerns like "being cringe." The new era of middle age dad culture is nigh and it's going to filled with a lot of Forgotten Realms references, 2000s-era internet slang and comments under videos about Dream Theater. Wouldn't want it any other way honestly.
He is on a world tour now... I heard on the Ola Englund's channel that they will tour the world twice because of the new record. So sadly I don't think so :(
Real talk, this is why Drumeo is so good. Because guys like Brand actually understand and love drums. Playing, listening, learning, all of it. It's not someone who decided to be an influencer and hacked their way into a subject. All the best TH-cam channels are people that actually love what they are doing regardless of having a channel as a product. Bravo Brandon, it took guts to put yourself out there like this and you nailed it.
Oh this is going to be amazing. I'll pray for you, Brandon. Or should I say... Two, from Sleep Token. You can't fool me, Brandon. Brandon Toews Brandon Two es Brandon Es Two

To learn a Dream Theater song on the spot is one thing but to learn it while Mike Portnoy is staring at you while you're playing his kit is on another level. Great job man!
14:51 - Mike teaching Brandon the kick drum pattern inside the booth, clapping hands on his legs and tapping his feet on the ground, with Brandon standing beside him 110% focused on what he was doing, like an eager prodigious apprentice drinking up knowledge from the master was one of the most wholesome and awesome things I've ever seen on this channel. That little clip will live rent free in my head for a long, long time.
The friendship between Mike and Brandon is awesome, and also Mike giving a challenge to play a song that hasn’t been released yet, thus allowing Brandon’s interpretation to be posted online before any video of Mike playing the song is a hugely generous gesture. Nicely done lads.
As someone who has played in a studio before, you can tell Mike has decades of experience in studio and with different artists and musicians. His ability to not take it too seriously but also treat the music with respect as it was written. He gives praise and complements which is priceless in the studio. I think playing with such an incredible musician would usually seem intimidating but he made it so relaxed while still taking it seriously and stopping to teach when needed. 10/10
Brandon has earned my complete respect, and Mike has earned my heart. Great song, great hosts, great chemistry... I think the "Revenge" series needs to continue.
The internet went way too many years without this super high quality Mike Portnoy content. Literally filled a void in my life and I'm not even a drummer, just a fan.
Even for those who don't like Dream Theater, you can't deny that they are passionate and generous musicians. I'm a simple man. I see Mike Portnoy and I click because I know he's down to have fun.
I have been a drummer for 30 years and this is my favorite drum video I have ever watched. Portnoy is the greatest of all time and Brandon you killed that. Imagine doing a 90 minute set of that multiple times a week. Pro athlete level shit.
Playing a tough song you have never heard, on a kit that is not yours, with someone else's sticks infront of your idol!!!!!!!!!! Great job! Really happy you got that experience!
The thing I've always loved about Mike and the rest of the DT crew in general is they're all just nerds like the rest of us. Who happen to be experts at their own instruments and love music and it shows through their music. Mike literally coaching Brandon like drum teacher coaching a student was feeeel good vibez.
I was just thinking this... He brought his kit in the studio. You know he didn't just bring it for this video and then packed it up and left. So there is so much more content coming from this session at drumeo. Super excited about that. Mike is my favorite drummer ever. For years before his first session at Drumeo I begged the drum gods for him to be on here. And mind you, I've loved so many other sessions with other famous drummers. But THIS is the partnership that I've wished for and now have enjoyed for the past year or so.
Think he's pretty good. He's the same dude doing the examples on most of the videos, the genius of, think that's the words. The iconic drummer videos, where they run down all the notable parts, it's him and the tab scroller.
I absolutely love Mike for doing this. Its so cool that he let Brandon and the Drumeo team hear this before anyone else and film really cool content. Not to mention playing such a beautiful drum kit!
This is probably the most difficult thing Brandon Toews has performed on Drumeo videos. Seeing Portnoy getting laughs and teaching the sections is a fun and entertaining addition. Toews really nails it in the final cut too despite the different level of skill so his practice and revisions made a difference.
My favourite thing is that for all his talk about getting revenge, Mike obviously wants Brandon to nail this. Mike keeps air drumming to give Brandon a hint. What a great experience.
BLOODY HELL BRANDON! Less than 3 and half hours and your performance was awesome. Kudos to MP being an epic coach, and to you, Brandon, for a hell of an achievement. Sorry to say, but you did well enough for this to be a regular feature with visiting Drummers. Revenge challenges look awesome. WELL DONE BUDDY! YOU ROCKED🤘🤘🤘
I love how much kindness, respect and professionalism this video has in it. Even tough Danny Carey wasn't there, I m sure he respects them as well. Great to see passionate instrumentalists interact with each other like this. Brandon did an amazing job learning and performing the song in a very limited time. You could tell from his eyes that Mike was ecstatic to see him perform his song and he enjoyed teaching the song to him like a teacher/brother/father figure. Greetings from a hobbyist drummer in Türkiye
Talk about a humbling experience, trying to play a master’s song in front of him, cold. But you handled it like a king, and Mike is so humble and encouraging! Very impressive, dude, you absolutely killed it. And your closing comments are spot-on. True musicians love sharing and teaching, they’re not condescending. Music is rewarding and fulfilling regardless of where you are on your musical journey!
Love how Mike keep saying " I think" when explanin a part. Even if you wrote the song, and are a beast in the instrument, at the end of the day it's the muscle memory that take the wheel
Mike's muscle memory is legendary. I think it was the first Transatlantic where the tape ran out before the song was over and they moved it to another tape and just continued the recording with the full band, the other guys doubting he'd be able to pull that off without weird side effects of cymbals and drums suddenly (dis)appearing.
@@dabarnhoorn that was LTE. He keeps a DAT deck (well, maybe something more up to date now) going whenever he's recording, so when the studio's tape or whatever ran out, they had to get the rest from his tape. The switch is pretty audible, somewhere around 25min into Three Minute Warning
Mike Portnoy really shows why he's one of the best drummers of all time. It's not just his understanding of music or his chops. He's encouraging and wonderful to work with. Even if it's for a TH-cam video collaboration and not a song or album release. What a legend!
For how difficult that was to do for anyone, I can comfortably say I have never been more jealous of Brandon than in this moment. That was nothing short of a straight flex in front of one of the best drummers in the world lol. This is my favorite drumeo video of all time. Side note: MP's gonna walk away from this whole thing with a newfound respect for Brandon's talent here, I cannot imagine my musical hero thinking this highly of me, that must be one of the best feelings in the world, I cannot even imagine. This video is giving me so much energy right now.
The only channel where, before watching the videos, I disable my ad blocker-it’s only right that I watch the ads. It’s only fair to support this channel as much as possible. Thank you for this content.
You guys should make Danny Carey learn a DT song like "Learning To Live". Its not as clichéd a choice as "Dance of Eternity", buts its still a very complex song with lots of mood and tempo changes and over 100 time signature changes. I think Danny would have both a lot of fun and frustration with it. Now thats revenge!
Professor Portnoy. Still 1 of the most top rated progressive metal & hard rock drummers in the music scene. See you in Texas brother! Thank you Drumeo, awesome channel!
Imagine being the first to listen to the new Drum Theater song. Then you are allowed to play on Mike Portnoy's personal kit. On top of that, you are paid for that. Life is good with you, Brandon!
Mike Portnoy showing up so frequently on Drumeo just makes me so incredibly happy 😊 This was such a great video! I'm so impressed with Brandon. He really nailed it. And having Portnoy's kit in front of you leaves now excuses! I used to try playing DT on my 5 piece and that leaves a lot to be desired!
Dude set aside the pressure and the difficulty of learning a song on the spot at the best of times - the sheer balls to play Portnoy at Portnoy on his kit... Brandon is a legend.
Great job, Brandon! Man, interviewing Phil Collins, sitting behind his kit and now playing Mike Portnoy's kit. That's some bucket list stuff right there!
I was just talking to my band mates about our drummer community. How guitarists will dig on one another, but drummers support and lift each other up. It makes me proud to be a drummer.
I know what you mean, especially at the amateur level I have found (anecdotal evidence of course) drummers always to be super supportive of each other, similarly bass players, when guitarists or vocalists for that matter can be a bit competitive. Although when I way young and learning, I had older guitar players lend me amps and speaker cabinets etc. When I think on the absolute pinnacle of professional musicianship level, I think you'll find a lot of extremely supportive people with less ego than on the amateur level in the guitar world as well. I can't help but think of Paul Gilbert right away for example.
Yeah, i try to help other guitar players as much as i can because i know that there's too much ego among us. At least i help people who are not total dicks and who are willing to be better :)
Guitarists are so caught up in technical ability. Like thats all that matters. And theyll always let you know if youre not up to their level lol. Its so dumb. I like to be supportive if someone isnt quite as good as me. I dont think im very good myself lol but theyll be like "dude youre awesome!" And ill be like so are you, keep practicing buddy youll get it. Conversely, if im talking to someone above my level, theyre almost always like "you cant do that? Whats wrong with you?! Man youre horrible you just give up" like yea thanks bro i wasnt aware im not as good as you 😂 i have actually had friends say that and im like wtf is wrong with you lol were friends, you should be glad i havent given up and like playing. And i guarantee youd make fun of me if i did quit 🙄🤣🤦♂️ then they wonder why noone wants to jam with them or take their "lessons" 😂
Brandon. I am addicted to Drumeo brother. What a great concept, and you are constantly taking it to new levels. Every episode is really good, but your boy Portnoy is an absolute legend in the drum community, and for you to CRUSH a Portnoy song in just a few hours has given your entire community a new appreciation for you as a drummer! YOU ROCK!
Amazing performance Brandon. Just caught the tail end of the premiere and will watch from the beginning now. Mike is not only a great drummer but seems like a great person too. 🤘🤘
Honestly this was such a blast to watch. You guys did so well and props to the wonderful Mike Portnoy for providing so much content with you guys. This is brilliant. Brandon you're a brave soul. Much respect my dude you played this well
As I realise this is probably the last video you had planned with Portnoy, I just want to say thanks for getting him on the show. There isn’t really anything else I expected to see!
i dont think so. all the last videos had a different drumset and now there is portnoys new one with 2 different sections. would be weird if they only made this video with this setup, where mike doesnt even play
This is a GREAT idea guys ! Shows how these songs can be learned by any drummers who are willing to put in the effort ! And I say that without saying Brandon is just "any drummer" cus he's definitely great, but sometimes we idolize our favourite drummers so much that we think they are just doing things we couldn't do...and so this here is super inspiring and I'm sure there's gonna be a multitude of drum covers steming from that video ! Genius 🎉
Having mikes insight while Brandon was going through the track was so awesome, best drum channel on TH-cam hands down and it's been that way for a long time!
Agreed. I'd say the biggest difference between the drummers we idolize and "every day" drummers may be some of their writing abilities. Remembering that altho any pretty good hobby drummer could play plenty of songs from famous drummers with practice, the impressive part is when it's an extremely creative and artistically amazing drum part we remember our idol drummer wrote that part. I think the creation of some of these parts is what is truly astounding to me. Writing creative inspiring parts is a lot harder than just playing parts someone else already wrote. I think that's a big difference between our favourite professional drummers and every day joe drummers
I'm not usually commenting on anything...EVER... But man, watching that video was an emotional rollercoaster ride. And seeing you struggle and overcome those few points where you seemed out of your depth was truly inspirational! It's also an absolute pleasure seeing the appreciation between you guys and...well...the devilish fun Mike seemed to have watching you power through that song. Keep spreading the wisdom and love!
Brandon is constantly learning and asking questions through his playthrough of this and Mike is freaking awesome to listen to as a teacher. Great stuff
I had the biggest dumb smile on my face watching you hit that final cymbal crash to end the song. That was amazing!!! What an experience for you Brandon
Your are the best Brandon! Your energy and enthusiasm keeps this whole channel alive! I'm not even a drummer, I'm a guitarrist but I LOVE THIS channel!
Been following Drumeo (was even a member for a year) since the beginning and it's just amazing how far it's come. I, for one, would love to watch a documentary about the evolution of the channel/program from Jared to Dave to Brandon.
Thank you guys. Im a self entertaining drummer, not in serious band... just simply enjoy drumming and listening DT and other good metal and rock music... Mike is my idol...learning his moves, even the tricks for almost 25 years...what an honor to be with him in this project and experience and you shared with us. Once again, thank you guys!! Cant wait for next DT concert in Hungary!!! All the best for you!
That Kit is probably $30,000! Just Beautiful! The fact that 2 drummers can play it at the same time is Beyond Insane! Brandon looks so awkward playing but can Absolutely Shred indeed! Nice Job B!
Can't even fathom of how much pressure brandon get, lol, playing mike's kit, dream theater new song in front of it's drummer and on top of that in front of us also in a sense, kudos to brandon he nailed it, great new revenge series!
Mike is such a down to earth guy, I'm not a drummer but I enjoyed it so much, pure good vibes, Mike just pranking and throwing jokes and you were brave enough to play that monster kit and a new song. Kudos Brandon, this makes Drumeo an even better channel as you see pure human interaction and just overall joy and fun. Great work!
Well done Brandon... This is every drummers dream to play Mike's drum & you are the first person who played this Midnight Messiah Drum Cover right in front of Mike Portnoy himself !! Salute to You
I can't even imagine the pressure of learning the drum part with Mike Portnoy just watching you the whole time! Amazing work! And Mike just always comes across as such a sound guy.
This is pure gold! It's also why Mike is the GOAT. Not just his playing but how he interacts with the community as if he's no better or worse than any of them, he's just one of them. Love this guy!
When an early question is "which side of the kit" you know stuff's about to get real. Loved this song when I first heard it. Brandon, you killed it. Brave man. Mike, if I was a session musician, I'd want someone like you in the control room. :) Can't wait to see DT in March.
Dude - Brandon absolutely crushed it!!! Having that Portnoy feel from someone other than Portnoy is absolutely incredible to hear. Doesn’t hurt having guidance from MP himself, but Brandon took it and make it feel equally great!
This was an excellent vid! Mike getting his much-deserved revenge, while simultaneously delivering a brand new DT track that cooks, as well as the wonderful effort by Brandon. This was everything I've come to expect from Drumeo content and more! Can't wait to see what the future holds. I will say, as long as Mike Portnoy continues to kick around there, I'll be there to watch.
wow, this video is so wholesome. I think its so nice to see musicians and fans, everyone coming together and having a great time jamming out and just having good vibes all around. Great job everyone
After 40 years of seeing ads for shows in The Aquarian, and hearing my drum friends obsess over them, I’m finally getting into Dream Theater. Thanks, Drumeo!

Mike's such a kind soul, giving Brandon tons of tips even before his first take.
Too kind, should have let him sweat a little more after he hit Mike with Pneuma!
He is not a mean guy like Brandon lol
This was the most impressive Drumeo video I've ever seen. Did not know that Brandon was such an absolute BEAST.
Right? I knew he could play, but this was fucking impressive.
If you haven’t yet then you must checkout the 100 plus Foo Fighters songs he plays back to back!!! Check it out!!
Check out him playing every Rush song. It's like a monster medley of ALL of them, in one take!
Mike Portnoy showing up so frequently on Drumeo just makes me so incredibly happy 😊
This was such a great video!
How generous of Mike Portnoy and Dream Theater to share this song for this exercise! Thanks to all! ❤
What an interesting twist. I'd love to see more of this kind of table-turning revenge in future episodes!
YOU ROCK!
Bro...I'm impressed. You did a great job at nailing his parts, especially since you'd never heard the song before. Awesome job.
Amazing performance Brandon. Just caught the tail end of the premiere and will watch from the beginning now. Mike is not only a great drummer but seems like a great person too. 🤘🤘
Oh hi, Ghostface! Love ur videos :D 🤘🏻
@FadeToBlackOpsthanks man! 🙏🏻
@ 🤘🏻😄
I'll be damned...Brandon can PLAY...like I knew he could play, but damn...he can PLAY play...way to go dude!!
Honestly this was such a blast to watch. You guys did so well and props to the wonderful Mike Portnoy for providing so much content with you guys. This is brilliant. Brandon you're a brave soul. Much respect my dude you played this well
Brandon Toews can do anything, what an absolute machine dude. You deserve every single bit of what you got...
He said himself in the video that this was recorded a week before this song came out.
All the kudos to Brandon for standing up for such brutal challenge!
By far my favorite video here since Mike's Tool torture
Hey Mathiu! love your work dude
I don’t think I’ve ever touched a drum kit, but the content this channel puts out is just so consistently great, I can’t stop watching
Brandon, this was incredible to watch.
Before Drumeo there was music and lessons. Now there’s actual drumming entertainment !!! And boy do I love this 😊
Thank you guys.
Brandon's memory is fantastic. I couldn't remember before the vocals starts! That song has Mike's signature. Awesome.
The role reversal is so cool. Brandon kicks ass!!
That Kit is probably $30,000! Just Beautiful! The fact that 2 drummers can play it at the same time is Beyond Insane! Brandon looks so awkward playing but can Absolutely Shred indeed! Nice Job B!
Much, much more
@daisysmithson really you think? How much then?
Some times I forget that Brandon is a beast on the drums.
Amazing take. Loved the role switch. This channel just keeps getting better.
My favorite song of the album so far and Brandon made an amazing effort to learn the line really quick.
Great work!
The look on Mike's face when Brandon's final take is over is one of pleasant surprise
Well done Brandon... This is every drummers dream to play Mike's drum & you are the first person who played this Midnight Messiah Drum Cover right in front of Mike Portnoy himself !! Salute to You
mimpi apa dia mainin drum mike portnoy dan didepan orangnya langsung😁
I can't even imagine the pressure of learning the drum part with Mike Portnoy just watching you the whole time! Amazing work! And Mike just always comes across as such a sound guy.
Just when I thought I couldn’t like Portnoy any more than I already do, he wears an Umphrey’s McGee t-shirt. Legend.
This is pure gold! It's also why Mike is the GOAT. Not just his playing but how he interacts with the community as if he's no better or worse than any of them, he's just one of them. Love this guy!
The man who wrote it saying "i think" is the most wild feedback to get.. 😂😂 props to Brandon. Killed it dude!
When an early question is "which side of the kit" you know stuff's about to get real.
Loved this song when I first heard it. Brandon, you killed it. Brave man. Mike, if I was a session musician, I'd want someone like you in the control room. :)
Can't wait to see DT in March.
Wow. That took some serious guts to even attempt that. Congrats on pulling that off! And congrats to MP for being so awesome to do that with you.
Dude - Brandon absolutely crushed it!!! Having that Portnoy feel from someone other than Portnoy is absolutely incredible to hear.
Doesn’t hurt having guidance from MP himself, but Brandon took it and make it feel equally great!
Love the fact Mike wants to help, and gives great respect to others who are not on his level. Top chap!
6:35 Intro starts playing, no drums whatsoever
MP: You're doing great so far! 😃
😂😂😂😂
😂
This was an excellent vid! Mike getting his much-deserved revenge, while simultaneously delivering a brand new DT track that cooks, as well as the wonderful effort by Brandon. This was everything I've come to expect from Drumeo content and more! Can't wait to see what the future holds. I will say, as long as Mike Portnoy continues to kick around there, I'll be there to watch.
3:21 😂😂 MIKE IS EATING A BANANA 😂😂
The seriousness that I expected from the titles and they hit me with that 🤣
This was the greatest lower third in Drumeo channel history
This was so compelling. I feel like he was teetering on the edge of loosing it throughout but pulled it off in the end, made it so intense to watch.
wow, this video is so wholesome. I think its so nice to see musicians and fans, everyone coming together and having a great time jamming out and just having good vibes all around. Great job everyone
"Mike is eating a banana." Amazing editor! I laughed so hard at that.
Brandon is living the dream of millions of Portnoy fans around the world 👏👏 Thank you, Drumeo!
"Mike is eating a banana" killed me😂
After 40 years of seeing ads for shows in The Aquarian, and hearing my drum friends obsess over them, I’m finally getting into Dream Theater. Thanks, Drumeo!
