I've trained professional actors to 'master' physical techniques (martial arts) and it is remarkable how fast they learn to emulate the look. They haven't mastered the principles behind the movements that might be applicable to a real fight, but unless you have years of experience to see the difference, you wouldn't be able to tell from their performance. You put a top notch actor through a two month boot camp, they can easily 'look' like they've had two years.

Ive always thought the better approach was to get people who can do the physical stuff first and then teach them to act. Very few recognizable actors have the ability to do both. For example for a martial arts movie they select like 10-20 great martial artists, have them go through acting school for a couple months, select the 3 best and give them another couple months and then cast best one. Then you would get a movie with amazing fighting actually clearly done by the person and not obscured by camera angles, frame rate, and editing. And you would get new faces in the film industry and not using the same people over and over

8:13 I’m gonna echo what jocko is saying here. A couple of years ago, I started a new job. My second day, the police tell us the swat team is going to be practicing on the building next door to us and to expect some loud noises. I expected some flash bangs and some gunshots. I was very surprised when they started explosively breaching doors. It sounds exactly like you’d expect it to sound when someone sets off explosives in the next building over. They’re still explosives. They’re still loud af.

They're even louder up close. We use ear protection, but sometimes it still isn't enough. The concussions will still damage our brains and our hearing. So when we speak loudly, it isn't to be condescending. It's more often because we can't really hear ourselves talk or what's being said to us.

I love that point Jocko made about the sound. There are some sounds that no theater can duplicate. For an example that is safe and anyone can go to, go watch a top fuel drag race. Even if racing isn't your thing, it's an experience that will open your eyes to a lot of things. The sound you don't just hear, you feel it in your chest and though your whole body. It's not just sound, it's a feeling. Plus, those cars accelerate so fast that you have a hard time turning your head fast enough to track them
