This might just be my favorite Rick Beato reaction video ever. I think a lot of people take music reviews too seriously and get mad at the reviewers for making fun of the songs. It’s refreshing to see Rick reacting casually and making fun of his own reactions, not taking himself deadly seriously, just having fun.
Most of the songs on this list may be "well produced," have traditional "verse/chorus" song structure, and be "well sung"; but I find a lot of them just incredibly dull.
Totally agree. There is a complete lack of inventive melody writing. Nothing makes you want to listen again. It’s the general phrasing of all the melody lines and the way they move through these songs that is very dull.

After that annoying APT, i had to get Die with A Smile in my playlist so i could have it on repeat hahah Classic rock and metal and alternative fan too
I was watching this and thinking what it must be like for Rick to go out for lunch with his family. We know Rick is a devoted family man so on one level he’d want to be listening attentively to his family but what would happen if some music came on? Would it end all possibility of a family conversation as Rick’s head starts bobbing around and he starts moving his finger around rhythmically? Would discussions about family vacation plans get overtaken by ‘listen to that, that’s three minor chords in a row’ or ‘listen to how that is structured as verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge’? You gotta love Rick’s enthusiasm for music.
Too funny.... I always pick up songs playing in the background at restaurants and in movie soundtracks that no one in my family even pick up on. I'll be like "do you hear that bass groove" only to be met with "huh?" LOL
you Rick are not obnoxious by any means ! No way is it easy to look and listen to yourself review songs BUT I love that you did this :))) THANK YOU ! HNY to you and yours !
@@J.D.... I just listened to Leave The Door Open. It's an excellent example of 70s pop soul. It's fantastic. Lyrically however it's pretty standard issue for that time. Good Luck, Babe definitely has its 80s retro elements but that's only part of its whole. There's real meaning to the song and it's part and parcel of the singer's own awakening. It's an original, almost alien, entry in today's pop world and it'll probably be influential moving forward. Cancel Reply
Hey Rick, I've been a subscriber for probably a few years if I had to guess, I am experienced in many different aspects of music with mixing, djing, guitar, piano, trumpet, bass, and bassoon. Your videos have always helped me with my bass and guitar playing and I like that you try to expand your taste towards modern music every now and then with an open mind. Instead of listening to the simple, feel-good, songs on the top charts that don't paint the modern music world as an industry pushing its boundaries of sound, I'd like to show you some, popular in their own right (especially with Gen Z), songs of multiple different genres for you to hopefully listen to and possibly earn a new perspective on the modern music scene. Here are the songs I chose to see if you can listen to. If you want, read my brief description of the artists sound and lyrics before listening. 1. Nights - Frank Ocean (36mil listeners) The song Nights by Frank Ocean marks the middlepoint of the album Blonde, which delves into a 28 year old Frank's view back on his early adult life and time in high school. The song is mostly about personal themes of Frank and the losses he experience during Hurricane Katrina. With the song divided into two halves, this song is a wild ride or synths and recorded instruments. 2. ME N MY KUP - Ken Carson (9.1m listeners) Ken Carson's sound has been leading the sound of underground trap since the release of 'X'. His sound is heavily inspired by the gritty, unmixed and unmastered, underground punk scene of the 80s, with other inspirations from Metal and Grunge. Though many would consider his music trap because of the drums and seemingly increasingly mindless lyrics at times, the instrumental production is far from trap. Ken's producers have curated the gritty, heavy, sound of EDM and techno inspired synths in dark patterns, layered with many instruments, and you can't forget the most obvious part of any Ken Carson track, the booming, usually Clipping through the mix, distorted 808 bass. 3. 3500 (feat. Future and 2 Chainz) - Travis Scott (70.7mil listeners) I'm certain you've heard of Travis Scott. This song is from Travis' debut album, Rodeo, which was a turning point for the trap genre, and a turning point for a young Travis' career. Before Rodeo, trap was simple rapping over an extremely repetitive beat, with songs just at radio length. Though trap on the charts is still that same idea, Rodeo used many unique techniques adding good lyrics, less repetitive instrumentals, and ability to have much longer tracks. At the base, 3500 has simple lyrics, but with a closer look the song is about Travis' time in Beverly Hills and the ridiculous consumerism culture behind rich celebrities, specifically Kim Kardashian. The name 3500 is referring to the $3500 coat Kim K bought her toddler son in 2015. 4. Let it Happen - Tame Impala (24.4 mil listeners) With less explanation than the others, Let it Happen is a wild ride of electronic and instrumental indie music all individually recorded by the genius, Kevin Parker, being the only member of Tame Impala. 5. Like Him (feat. Lola Young) - Tyler the Creator (51.1mil listeners) The most emotional track off his new album, Like Him is about a voicemail from Tyler's mom, explaining that the father, who Tyler has very publicly resented for leaving before he was born, actually wanted to be in his life but his mother didn't allow him to, and told Tyler he left him. This song greatly contrasts a song from his early career, Answer, showing his mix of hate and hope his father tries to reach him someday. Note: as a teenager myself, this is a blend of the music that all my male and female friends mainly listen to.
I'm a 52 year old rock/metal guy who hasn't liked the majority of pop music the last 10-15 years... but 2024 was refreshingly good... almost every major hit song was likable, the hip-hop stuff that dominated five years ago seems to be fading a bit and it felt almost more like 1980s pop scene. Kudos to Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, Shaboozey, Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Chappell Roan, Bruno Mars and others - even Billie Eilish, whom I generally haven't cared for, seemed to release good songs. The bar is set very high for 2025.
I'm also a metal/rock guy and ironically, I found this one of the worst years due to Sabrina Carpenter, Benson Boone, Post Malone and Shaboozey being so popular. The rising popularity of pseudo-country and obnoxious singing has made listening to radio painful due to it's extreme prevalence. They're fine songs to listen to once, but listening to them multiple times each day highlights the negative qualities that might be missed if you only hear them once or twice. Chappell Roan is pretty good, and one of the few artists in this new wave of pop artists that is decent. Bruno Mars is probably one of the few saving graces this year, his songs with ROSE and Lady Gaga are great. ROSE's solo work is also good, doesn't get played on the radio unfortunately, along with Charli XCX. The Weeknd and Kendrick also had fairly good songs (like they always do), but aren't played in my country as much as the terrible "country" music.
One thing I've noticed is we are getting a lot of throwback sounds to the past, which made several songs more enjoyable. (Ironically we are seeing that in Kpop - lot of throwback style.)
rick looking at rick is hilarious in the best possible way. these tiny windows should keep popping up and in the end we would have lots of rick's commenting on each other 😅
Lose control can be the song of this year. Even if it is not an outstanding song, it is some of the rare ones that showcased a good new voice in these sombre times for pop music.
I like it when you do these kind of overviews. It helps put some context to music that is currently popular. I would find it interesting if you would do some Beato picks occasionally. Songs that you feel are really good, irrespective of whether or not they are popular. Just kind of "new music worth checking out". For instance, you did a review (?) of Willow Smith's "Symptom of Life", that I found really interesting and it introduced a song I would have never been exposed to... but really like. 👍 Happy New Year!
@sebastianbisurgi9970 In the history of mankind, has anyone much over 40 succeeded at trying to be the cool mom or dad? I mean consciously, not naturally.
@@joncumber2020 Nothing to do with him getting old. Modern day pop music use the same cord progression in just about every song. Thats why they sound the same.
This is true of literally every era. Listen to the top chart hits of 1974 or 1984, and you will notice how similar most of the music is. The difference is that we’ve had 40 or 50 years to allow the best music from those years to percolateand separate themselves from everything else. Comparing today’s music and music from the past is apples and oranges because you are really comparing a highly curated list of the 20 or 30 best songs of a particular year versus the hundreds that came out in 2024.
Where are the Hozier fans at? Honestly, I didn't care that much for Too Sweet (which i think became a viral hit because of TikTok) but he's an excellent singer-songwriter and musician. You don't have to even dig that deep into his discography to figure that out.
Here I am!! Yeah, agree with that, all of his songs are just so creative and artistic, my personal favourite of his had been "Would That I" (though it's hard to pin down a fav one when almost all his songs are wonderful)
I listened to the album that had "Take Me To Church" on it, and most of the songs were slow and boring, imo. I haven't sought out his music since. Maybe he's improved, idk.
@@johnd5931 His most recent album Unreal Unearth has some faster songs in there. I recommend De Selby (part 2), Eat Your Young, and Francesca (my favorite). Nobody's Soldier is another good one from the second EP for Unreal Unearth too. He still has some slow songs on there too but in general most have faster tempos than his earlier albums so you might like others on there as well :)

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars its such an amazing Song i already learned it on Guitar and i say it will stay as one of the best songs from the 2020s just amazing! Greetings 35.Year old from Germany
Songs today are being manufactured for a short temporary listening time, to be relevant for a fixed period, to cater to the 'bored' public who doesn't really actively care about music and just wants 'something to listen to'. And the sad part is that the music industry that's become heavily commercialised will always cater to these people's interest first. Simply because it's too easy to make music today.
Pop music is disposable. There may be some minor differences, but essentially the songs on this list are just variations of what has been done for years. I work in a place that has piped in music. There are songs that I have heard for over ten years at work that sound the same as what is on this list.
I'm glad you revisited Bruno and Lady's song. It is really good and I didn't think you quite gave it enough the first round. You must have went back and heard the whole thing. Great vid too!
I had never heard of Teddy Swims before, but I just downloaded about 20 of his songs and I know what my New Year’s playlist is going to be. What a voice.
I again realized that I don't follow charting songs that much, because there were some I didn't even hear once before. In fact, at first I thought this must be US only, but I guess it is all streaming platforms combined? I was suprised that Chapell Roan was not on this list.

@@dougcallaghan6075 Thank you lol I'm the type of person that doesn't focus too much on lyrics when it comes to mainstream music and at first I found Espresso pretty fun to listen to but after it played so much on the radio I started focusing on the lyrics and I was like ??? this is dumb lol and now I can't listen to it anymore because I can't ignore how dumb the lyrics are.
From this list: Cruel Summer (technically 2023), Espresso and Die With a Smile (also on my own list). From my own list: Maggie Rose: "Too Young" (live in MD version); Taylor: "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me"; Grace Bowers: "Wine On Venus"; Taylor: "Down Bad"; Oliver Anthony: "Mama's Been Hurting"; Maggie Rose: "Mad Love"; Kacey Musgraves: "The Architect", and Katy Perry's "Gorgeous" (for production only).
It’s refreshing that you like these songs in that way! Too many people in comments say “oh, it’s all copied from previous decades and that’s awful!” Yeah no; nothing wrong with that. I like it when things sound like other things.
“Sorry, Benson. It’s better than I’m making it out to be. Not THAT much better, but better.” Talk about damning with faint praise… but as usual, I agree!
"Thank you Billie, it was great" One of her best songs. Even my favorite songs hit me differently on different days. Same with everyone. That's why you've got to listen at least twice.
I'm just trying to find the bridge Has anybody seen the bridge? Please (Have you seen the bridge?) I ain't seen the bridge (Where's that confounded bridge?)
Rick, I do remember ELP ! Keith Emerson was one of my favorite keyboard players of the 70's. I loved EL&P live 3 times in the 70's and was of course sad to see their demise. I did follow Greg Lake a good while longer but alas, all good things come to an end. Except music, thank you so much for what you do to keep it alive. !!
I will say as time goes on I'm not as big an ELP fan as I used to be. It's not the ideas or arrangements or even their skills as musicians - it's the sound of the electronic instruments. They don't hold up as much as they used to - the limits of technology of that time. That's why I don't particularly care for Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmas - like the song but the synths are really annoying now.
I'm 53 yo and each time I hear Rick review some of these modern song lists, I just don't hear songs that are inspiring and make me glad to be alive. What I mostly hear are same, same songs. The vocals typically sound monotone and auto-tuned and the music over-compressed and few moments where I would say, wow, that's great musicianship. Also, it seems as though much of popular mainstream music has had an R&B Hip Hop feel for the last couple of decades. The kind of music which is just another audio file. 😢
"The kind of music which is just another audio file." Okay i have to push back on this a little bit. Sampling is way more than that. Modern hip hop production can get pretty complex, you'll usually have multiple samples in a song and the original song isn't recognizable anymore. Besides, there is also a lot of original instrumentation (sometimes even entire jazz ensembles with Kendrick Lamar for example), so the point is moot anyway. But really, it is just another art form. You still have to be artistically inclined to make an interesting song with samples.
I don't think it's an age thing. looking back objectively at older music in general, the quality of melody is hands down better. melodies were stronger and choruses hard hitting. the new stuff for the most part is one long string of 'yawn'... it's boring!
…I liked 2 of em, a third one was okay. Otherwise: just repetitive, derivative, sonic wallpaper which sounds like everything else produced in the past 15-20 years…
@@Kevvinm I’m an old grunger, was in a grunge band back in the 90’s, but I have never been closed off to most genres of music. Totally agree with you about Beautiful Things - I don't like the way they mixed Benson Boone's voice. Too bad because it's a decent song - but would be much better with a different mix. I also agree that these 10 songs are pretty good (can't always say that) - they are SONGS.

I've been listening to a lot of stuff I was too cool for back in the day. I do hear songs on the radio that I really like during my long commute, sadly DJs rarely give info about the music anymore. I can't be messing with an app while I'm driving.
Get Shazam or Google Now Playing and turn it on when you start your drive. Will give you a record of every song playing near you. Even store background music if you keep it on while shopping.
I know what you are saying.Iv been listening to a lot of 50s and 60s Jazz and early 70s Fusion music. Not sure what I do when I get tired of Jazz and Fusion.
8:03 - Teddy Swims got my attention this year. In an era where everything on the radio sounds the same, he has a soulful flavor that's refreshing to hear. 🙂
I listened to that whole song and it was just boring to me. It's always nice to see that there are still plenty of people getting enjoyment out of it though.
@@TacoBellFan222 ''Boring'' or just ''simple''? It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he is getting quite some depth out of *very* simple instrumentals and uses his voice like an actual instrument, it sounds almost like an old blues song and reminded me of the old B.B. King records.

To me "Die with a Smile" is the best song of the list, "Too Sweet" and "Lose Control" are very good songs, and "End Of Beginning" and "Beautiful Things" are decent songs. Honestly, I never thought I would save five songs from the Top Songs of 2024.
I've been to a Benson Boone concert and it was in the top three vocal performances I have ever seen in my life. I've been to countless shows over the decades and saw all of these guys and more in their younger heyday years: Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Jon Anderson, Dennis DeYoung & Tommy Shaw, Michael Hutchins, Sting, etc., as well as several jazz and opera singers you've never heard of. Benson's vocal prowess wiped the floor with most of them. Simply mind blowing.
he has a voice that sounds discordant all the time whatever he sings even if it's bangon a G or whatever, will sound off. some voices are not singing voices maybe he'd be good as a bingo caller or maybe he'd be good as a butcher at a market you know a crowded market ? singing? not so much....

The Gaga/Mars song and Hosier’s Too Sweet, are the only two somewhat interesting, melodic tunes. The rest are repetitive, derivative dreck, where the melody and/or beat barely changes. Mostly sounds like everything else from the past 15-20 years (as most people on here have stated). It’s sad because (with some minor exceptions), the music from the mid-60’s to mid/late 90’s was so melodic, complex, soulful and so damn good! Really an incredible run for music…
definitely felt like the big songs were a lot more musicl and interesting this year than the rest of the decade. a few actual legit guitar based ones in there too. love to see it

After that annoying APT, i had to get Die with A Smile in my playlist so i could have it on repeat hahah Classic rock and metal and alternative fan too
@@OwenFriday13 APT always sounds like apathy
Heavy metal and prog fans here, occasional shoegaze listener too, I agree with you, Die with a Smile is a beautiful song
Maybe the conversation turns to analyzing the songs.
Thank you Mr Beato for you being present on YT - its amazing content and Im looking for 2025 already! Happy New Year!!!
Cruel summer has actually been out for several years, it just happened to chart again this past summer
Yeah, I remember Bananarama did it. LOL
It was never released as a single until this year
It became popular again in the Summer of 2023 after the Eras tour
And it has a bridge !
I thought that was Bananarama hit
I agree the best song was the Bruno Mars Lady Gaga song. Such a very great vibe to it and it just sounds really good.
😅
Bruno Mars is the only artist in the 21st century that my mom really enjoys seeing and hearing.

How did "Good Luck, Babe! - Chappell Roan" not make the cut?
He should have at least mentioned it. It's the best song to hit the charts in years. Sabrina Carpenter even covered it, for Pete's sake.
All Chappell Roan all the time!!!
@@thespacealienssmogandgrog4283 its a perfectly good pop song, but the best in years is a bit extreme when Silk Sonic exists.

I know I love this song!! It's up there with Die With A Smile for me.
1. Nights - Frank Ocean (36mil listeners)
The song Nights by Frank Ocean marks the middlepoint of the album Blonde, which delves into a 28 year old Frank's view back on his early adult life and time in high school. The song is mostly about personal themes of Frank and the losses he experience during Hurricane Katrina. With the song divided into two halves, this song is a wild ride or synths and recorded instruments.
2. ME N MY KUP - Ken Carson (9.1m listeners)
Ken Carson's sound has been leading the sound of underground trap since the release of 'X'.
3. 3500 (feat. Future and 2 Chainz) - Travis Scott (70.7mil listeners)
I'm certain you've heard of Travis Scott.
4. Let it Happen - Tame Impala (24.4 mil listeners)
With less explanation than the others, Let it Happen is a wild ride of electronic and instrumental indie music all individually recorded by the genius, Kevin Parker, being the only member of Tame Impala.
5. Like Him (feat. Lola Young) - Tyler the Creator (51.1mil listeners)
The most emotional track off his new album, Like Him is about a voicemail from Tyler's mom, explaining that the father, who Tyler has very publicly resented for leaving before he was born, actually wanted to be in his life but his mother didn't allow him to, and told Tyler he left him. This song greatly contrasts a song from his early career, Answer, showing his mix of hate and hope his father tries to reach him someday.
Note: as a teenager myself, this is a blend of the music that all my male and female friends mainly listen to.
I swear Rick would love Tale Impala
@@drewanderson7203100%, that whole Currents album is a production masterpiece

TL;DR
(Ironically we are seeing that in Kpop - lot of throwback style.)
do you just dislike hiphop?? it’s not necessarily about music becoming more high quality, just your personal preferences…

You should remix Teddy Swims and add that guitar solo, Rick! It's a great song, but just that little glimpse of what a solo would do was lights out!
I’ve really been impressed with Teddy Swims. I’m not a popular music fan. Tend to look at modern music with a cynical eye.

Said every grandfather ever. You’re just getting older. I concede there are fewer ballads but that’s truly a sign of the times.

I beg you to listen to the magdalena bay album "imaginal disk", maybe it will give you some faith in pop music
Fully agree about Die With A Smile. Great song, great duet. Could have been a Bond song it just has that vibe.
I was just telling that to mt husband yesterday! It sounds like a James Bond theme song. So good
Birds of a Feather, that's a beautiful song. Eilish has a lot of fantastic songs.

@@craigmoon2121 that's why it surpassed Espresso and became the most streamed song of the year
Songs today are being manufactured for a short temporary listening time, to be relevant for a fixed period, to cater to the 'bored' public who doesn't really actively care about music and just wants 'something to listen to'.

exactly, these song sare literal dog s*** !!! seriously!
Happy New Year from Ireland Rick. Love your work!
Bless you Rick! Have a happy and healthy year!
Being a 57 model, I guess I'm getting old and don't get the new stuff... I could listen to maybe 3 of them again.
The best music today is just not very popular.
I'm 55, and I don't like any of them
I don't think it's an age thing. looking back objectively at older music in general, the quality of melody is hands down better. melodies were stronger and choruses hard hitting. the new stuff for the most part is one long string of 'yawn'... it's boring!
…I liked 2 of em, a third one was okay. Otherwise: just repetitive, derivative, sonic wallpaper which sounds like everything else produced in the past 15-20 years…

Music is one area where I feel my age the most. Indeed, I am more apt to go back before my time for ‘new’ music than to look at modern stuff.
There's probably great news music made in the same style as that stuff. But it's probably got like 500 plays and hard to find 😂
I've been listening to a lot of stuff I was too cool for back in the day. I do hear songs on the radio that I really like during my long commute, sadly DJs rarely give info about the music anymore. I can't be messing with an app while I'm driving.

its a real station changer!!!!
