This channel is to help engineers fix boilers. I try and teach boiler repair for the betterment of the UK gas industry. The better we are the more work we get.
Common UK boiler brands such as Vaillant, Ideal, Worcester and Baxi all have more obscure models and this is one of them.

Very nice work and many heating eng's couldnt do that.
I am sure you will remember but on those boilers -
Chimney sweep does the range rated output.
P1 max - boiler off, Hold + turn on boiler until P1 release and push i button.
p2 min - boiler off, hold + trun on boiler until P2 release and push i button.
Common fault of the R1 model (up to approx 2012) when they are 8-10 years old. Gas valves normally good and reliable.
R2 onwards (2012 on) could be either PCB or gas valve. Can test each but the gas valves are really bad on these.

Yeah gas valves were poor on the later generations. I also know how to fix them but thats flying a little close to the sun for me. ;-)
Indeed so poor that I had to replace one I had fitted to the same boiler the previous day ! Some may argue there was a contributing fault but this was not the case.
The second has been OK for 3/4 years now ! Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this but i also understand your position.
Repairing gas valves PCB's etc can leave you open to all sorts of problems and this is not something I have entertained - apart from repairing defective solder joints. - This doesn't materially change the part.
I also do not fit parts that are "pattern" or "reconditioned" for exactly the same reasons. Cheaper maybe but for who ? The customer. And you are in a whole lot of bother if there was a significant problem. Stick with manufacturer parts.

I agree. I have become a little frustrated lately because of all the parts that have very minor things go wrong and need £200 to replace. The world apparently needs saving so we should all buy a heat pump. Coz thats the answer..... Making more shite. Selling more shite..

Remember fixing my nan's old turbomax divvy with the inner tube from my nephew's bike....it held for ages. LOL. My mum has an old Prima chugging along. Keep a stock off fans and PCBs for her.
Get a gas valve too. I like the prima except when they are left on before a service. Fing hot boilers.
I think hers has a Wright Rogers valve rather than the Honeywell. Will be a sad day because its the narrow one and I can't think of a modern boiler I'd trust that fits the space on the wall. Will effectively mean a new kitchen, and she's in her 80's.
They did a conversion kit though? I think.. If not I would grab the bits out of another boiler. Cant mess up an 80yo kitchen for a new boiler.

It will come with time. I don't really know very much on electronics tbh. I know some bits to get me by.
The flyback transformer is normally running anywhere from 60 kHz up to 250 kHz on a power supply of this size. Electrically leaky smoothing capacitors on the DC side will prevent the voltage rail being regulated properly. If you were to look at the output waveform, you'd see large overvoltage spikes followed by a drop in voltage after switching period.
I can look at the waveform if my oscilloscope is good enough. I need to have a look at it. where would i look at it? The same points? I have gone through the PCBs before and drawn a basic diagram but it was years ago and I don't have it anymore. I do think some versions have test points marked on them....
@@HeatingGeek you'll see what's happening if you probe directly where the capacitor is. Instead of a line at 21V with a bit of ripple, you'll see a wobbly waveform which gets worse with load

Good informative video, can you explain wgy power on/off two ports would be an issue in the video please? Is it to do with if the power off side of things is faulty?
Unvented cylinders need 2 forms of overheat protection and 2 ports are meant to fail safe. These 2 ports would stay open if the power failed.

Makes perfect logical sense. What are the current Gas Safe regulations about carrying out PCB repairs at component level? I'm new to the industry having spent 20 years working in electronic systems on aircraft, and consequently tracking down electronic faults is second nature to me. I've been told by other Gas Safe engineers that I was acting illegally when carrying out a PCB repair. I was not modifying the design or anything - simply replacing faulty components like for like with the the part number to restore it to a seviceable state as per its qualified design (was MOSFETS and a wirewound resistor in Worcester Bosch fan PCB). I can't seem to find any definitive info concerning this online, only a few opinions from Gas Safe engineers who probably wouldn't know how to carry out such a repair and would just swap the whole board, and probably don't want other people to undercut them on repair costs it would seem. Any advice you can give would be a great help as I'm just starting out. Thanks.

Great video, where do you test on the mk2 vaillant pcb,will it be on the 24v bus terminal, all components have tolerances,no pcb will be same,dont see why its contravening gas laws,thanks for the video.

@@HeatingGeek Don't worry about that in most places there is a large community of expats and other people so English will do fine. If you also can do heatpumps (aircons) then you can basically get work from day one.

You did a vid few years back and you was saying about the flow temp jumping up and down and it being a faulty pcb, any way this happed to mine recently and when I had the engineer round, I gave him all the information I learnt from your video and I think it saved so much head scratching from the engineer

That was a good repair, you don't normally find a heating engineer who will perform a component level repair.
Your explanation of switch mode power supply (SMPS) operation wasn't bad, the reason that the transformer is so small is partly due to the frequency of operation (typically >50kHz) and partly because the power required by the circuitry is relatively low (
You have seen the Unwelcome surprise video now so you know I have an ESR meter. I tend to go head first into everything and just remember the things I need to know. I probably done 500+ hours of studying to understand things you find so simple. I then forget at least 70% of it and just remember what I need too. The PCBs are also £200 so saved a bit of cash too. :-) Its always great to get a comment from someone who actually knows what they are talking about when its a unusual subject for a plumber/gas engineer.

@HeatingGeek Ah there the main importer of Gloworm and Vailliant in Ireland, there in Dublin 12 and Belfast I think . Infairness like all suppliers once they get to know u there 100% . Doubt they would have had that PCB they would b a fairly rare boiler over here there might b a few up the north tho . I'm base in South Dublin .

@@HeatingGeek I do a lot of f gas repairs. Changing a low pressure switch on a ground source early next week. Love it as it’s so different to plumbing. Changed a compressor on Monday on a split air to water. Keep the f gas it will become massive going forward

Na, I was doing 2 stage Oftec. It is a great training center. The Sapphires do look very interesting and bring Oil into the 21 century. You have to set the fan speed at multiple settings which means you get a customer for life too.
Looking at the programmer diagram it doesn't show the need for a link between L and 4. Why is that added? Is it not integrated in the board like the connection between L and 3 is?
The link between L and 4 is what is keeping this persons heating on. Another engineer has put it in because the programmer has failed.

I dont normally comment but great video. To help with your query the capacitors on the board help with Capacitive Reactance. This is inversely proportional to the AC frequency passing through the capacitor. It how the electronics chaps use the circuitry on the boards. The fact that a capacitor has failed it is no longer able to draw the right voltage from the LV side and hence its all over the place. There is an easy way to fix these but very time consuming as each capacitor on the LV side would need to be checked for being "popped". Sometimes you can see the blown capacitor if not then each ones needs to be de-soldered and tested.
Thats why I done them all. No need for testing with Mmeter and ESRmeter. Just replace and refit. :-) I have just ordered an ESR meter so I can test them in future. I have previously replaced caps and repaired a PCB ( I fitted in my own boiler to test) and the uf was all ok on them. So I must of been ESR gone high?? Im not sure but will use one in future to understand a little more. :-)

These are polarised electrolytic capacitors which have been replaced. Strictly DC only. They aren't being used to drop voltage using capacitive reactance.

Correct, the capacitors aren't being used for their reactance; that would be a 'capacitive dropper' circuit & would be the very cheap means of voltage conversion used in low-cost, low-power devices. A boiler pcb has a higher quality circuit for efficiency & reliability, so will use a bridge rectifier and probably also a high frequency SMPS circuit to obtain the board supply voltage. The electrolytic caps are there purely for voltage stability and smoothing.

Hi HG, I have been following your videos, instructions and am interested in further pursuing in central heating/plumbing. The problem Iam going thru with Vaillant TurboMax Plus 824E
My issues started 4 weeks back, problems with the boiler cutting out after a few minutes. Hot water perfectly fine . The problem we are having is with the central heating side. The boiler starts up and makes the usual noises. The flames light and remain lit for around 2 minutes, after going off. The boiler continues to make the noise those (as though it is fully working). After about another 5 minutes the flames light again for another 2 minutes (It doesn't reach the temperature-It gradually goes upto 30c and cut off the heating. When the temp gradually reached 18c it starts again for few minutes and cut off. Its more like cycle. Well after running for couple of hours radiator gets warm at the bottom only. ( All rads bleed)
I thought could be room thermostat. I have changed two thermostats from different brand but NO luck. FYI-Its nearly 20 years old combi boiler.

It's the best combi ever made in my opinion. I have one in my garage :-) I would press the i button and see what the S code is. That will tell you what the boiler thinks it is doing. Then go from there. Obviously check what the knob on the front of the boiler is set to aswell.

I bet the low gas pressure is set too low. Check the high and low pressures. I guess you mean s4/s7

@@kevin-ep3lu I cant tell you that because its gas safety advise, get an engineer out for that or if you are an engineer call Vaillant. It must go to S4 at some point because that means it's lit. Keep an eye on the S codes and they might show you the issue. Does the temperature on the display fluctuate a lot?
Agree with ffd point, work on a HA contract with 1000s of ecotec's never had one fail

But when the fan turns on its impedance is low at the beginning and it rises gradually, hence the voltage drops for a short period.

I don't know. I just know replacing the Caps fixes the problem and the voltage dropping is the way I ID it. On a good working boiler the voltage does not drop the same way.
F62 point’s to gas valve but is usually pub but ultimately it’s due to pump failing. When pub in up position sits in front of pump and heat transfer causes pcb to fail

Not bad, but i carry this PCB as vanstock so would change it in 5mins and rinse the customer for £120+VAT and a +25% markup on a £250 part
Yep, Thats why people get insurance :-)
The small transformer on the PCB is dropping the mains voltage to a lower AC voltage. It’s not being used in a switch mode function. The secondary AC lower voltage is then rectified and converted to DC then various DC voltages generated using linear voltage regulators. The electrolytic capacitors are for DC voltage smoothing. It’s a common point of failure when they dry up or leak electrolyte.
Its is being used with a PWM signal though so isn't that switch mode? Its not running at 50hz

No diverter valve problems not the first one I have replaced bad design and now it's being used in a ideal boiler same part fits both apparently according to eBay sellers

@@michaelc1970 I like Vaillant personally.You need a good installer over good appliance. Powerflush the system well and most boilers will be good.
Don't forget we are only 220 volts here not like UK at 240v does this effect your readings

Yes just take note of the polarity before you take them out and make sure you put the new ones in the same way.

I know a TV Engineer & seeing him work on PCB’s is amazing. Mind you with the bevvy & Charlie, he’s a bit f.cked now. He says with surface fitted components on boards now, it’s killed most repair work.

In my life I served as a Electronics Instrumentation Engineer etc, always go for new Electrolytic Capacitors, replace with Panasonic High Temperature rating 105°C
Look at value in uF & Voltage rating same, in a Hot environment Electrolytic Capacitors dry up or leak, clean pcb with isopropyl, watch out for polarity of the Capacitors
Thats it. I didn't clean the PCB as I didn't have any isopropyl in the val. Next time I'm there I will give it clean. I had the iso at my house in the garage. :-) I wish I could learn more about electronics.

Why does the pcb fail sometimes when u turn the power off on the front ?
I've had that on a Glowworm. Power off up in the loft to check the flue. Case front off. Gauge on analyser in boiler power back on and flashing on off on off. Makes you look very professional.
Exactly the same reason. The caps have failed and when they cool down because you turned the power off they stop working. Warm them up and get the boiler working and then order the part. :-)

It’s a shame that you can’t in theory repair a board for something simple like bad caps. An hour of work and 50p in parts is going to be less than a pcb. Also you checked it was combusting properly after so your board got recalibrated fine.
I would expect the HIU will have overheat protection built in to comply with G3.
Yeah but the valve doesn't fail safe. If it on and the customer turns the spur off it will stay open
@@HeatingGeek What I'm saying is like the Viessmann boiler/unvented cylinder, the temperature control in an overheat situation is taken care of by the diverter valve etc.within the boiler without the need for an external 2port spring return valve.
In the event that the HIU does not have a fail safe system, then the instal contravenes G3 which I would find more than concerning!!!

Why on earth boilers get installed into lofts is beyond me ! Ridiculous situation. The first thing I do in the morning is check my boiler is ok …. I’ve always done it as a routine!

I don't service mine, my mums, or my brothers boiler every year. When they breakdown they get a service. Mums been done 3 times in 14y mines been done 4 times in 16 years and my brothers which is 2019 boiler has yet to be done. I fitted them, I flushed them and I know they are safe.

I was under the impression that boilers would be serviced every year for insurance purposes. Cylinder manufacturers require that for the 25 year warranty. I'm not sure how it works with boilers.

Yeah, boilers are meant to be serviced every year for insurance purposes. But Unlike document writers I have been working on boilers for 24years and noticed that putting an analyser into a boiler every 12 months does nothing for safety or to stop a breakdown.
Older boilers and Oil boilers DO require servicing every year. Boilers fitted by unknown installers do need servicing every year. My work, gas pipe sizing, boiler sizing, flue installation etc is all done to the regulations and means a boiler will remain safe for most of its life.
I know most modern boilers will need a repair ever 5 years and I service my family boilers when that time comes. BUT when I service them I don it properly. Full strip clean pump up the vessel etc

Can't see many comments about a power off valve a problem On an unvented cylinder
I would guess that as it's permanently wired to power off and a call for heat opens it, it will fail to power close. If the electricity fails then the boiler will be off anyway, so no danger possible.
That was a communal system. So no protection in an overheat situation or if the motor fails.
MOMO valves are a rubbish idea whichever way you look at them.

No, thats the thing. If the consumer turned the power off when the valve is in the open position then the valve stays open. I think the safety comes from the interlocks in the plant room. Not sure though. I did mention it to the building owners.
Yes but they can hold back more pressure than spring return valves. This is why I think the site has them.

As a technician for a different trade. You have just proven that consumers get ripped off. It's not that things can't be fixed on the cheap. It is more profitable for the whole units to be replaced. It is really infuriating when we know that this repair would have cost around £10 in parts + an hours of labour instead of £100 - £350 in parts and 2 hours in labour. (Extra hour going to a boiler spares shop and buying the part)
I wonder if you can get around the regs by taking the pcb away for refurbishment and coming back with it repaired?
Maybe to the van? Who knows. I just cant risk it in a customers house.

You are correct they do get you out of many situations but I would not rip out a boiler and cylinder to replace with a combi.

@@gregbenham5586 Thats a fair point, but for a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house with great mains pressure you cant go wrong. Obviously you need to trust the boiler you fit and be able to same day fix it. :-)

No attention to detail.
Crap pipework,.bad cables to controls, flue was.cracked during installation, so within month 1, the burner n combustion area had water flowing back into boiler.
Obviously she didn't call her back, not wanting to make a fuss.
So guess who got those crappy jobs?🤔😉😂😂

Yeah, and they are easy to fix, It not worth the risk in a customers house though,
Capacitors on secondary/ low voltage side changed. There was no visible bulging on the top pressure relief (cross line indentations on top of electrolytic capacitor) so failure mode not catastrophic but most probably significant increase in ESR (equivalent series resistance). For SMPS operating 50kHz to 100kHz typically, low ESR capacitor needed. With poor ESR, regulation (smoothing of high frequency noise) will no longer be to specification. Feedback loop (via opto-isolator) to SMPS IC no longer controlled and secondary output voltage no longer regulated correctly. Lucky you had replacement electrolytics on hand. No legitimate reason why competent PCB repair not allowed by Gas Safe!
I bought the caps from RS and got Nippon's. Long time ago now. I brought a few faulty PCBs home and had a play. I found lots of them displayed the same low voltage issue. Replacing the Caps fixed them all. So i kinda knew that was the common issue on these PCBs. I tested them all on the faulty boiler and then fixed them and tested them in my own boiler. I now see the same problem with most PCBs.

Another fantastic one Ollie. One question on the Fan; does the Fan on that Vaillant operate on PWM to modulate the speed, so therefore, you were only checking the 20vdc fixing constant voltage terminals? It looked like a non ERP Fixed Head Pump.
Being a former Vaillant Engineer, these boiler must be second nature to you?

Yeah, the fan is PWM and uses the 24v to run. The terminals I tested on are meant to be constant 24v (never 24v but usually 20-22). The test is just using easy to access points to see the voltage isn't stable. The fan is obviously the biggest current draw on the low voltage side and highlights the issue. This problem is on many many boiler brands though. I have seen it on an Alpha and Baxi since Christmas. It just about looking for low voltage that isn't stable somewhere where it should be.
