The Vaillant Combi boiler Gets Powerflushed and fully set up in this visit. I finally found the underlying issue and got it fixed. I even use a combustion analyser on it.

Absolute quality job. Honestly, I would have walked or fitted a new one. Credit to you and our industry.
The problem with fitting new is you lose a customer for many years. Manufacturers will sell them an extended warranty and system cover too. Keep the old boiler on the wall and keep a customer happy. Also you get to build a relationship and have a long term customer. Thats my thinking anyway. What analyser would you recommend?
I thought you had one of the best KANE defo not TPI. I have an Anton never a problem but they made them obsulete, me to looking for recommends
@@kevinschoales844 What's wrong with the TPI ones? I was looking into getting one of those as my regin one click is due for calibration, so any info appreciated.
@@MrSuperheterodyne i had one onloan as Anton in for recalorbration battery prob, then 2nd very slow reading slight adjustments and several boilers high ratio, going back to all jobs with calibrated Anton to recheck. Kane had good reports about and quick turn round 👍
@@kevinschoales844 Thanks for the info mate. I'll have to see what deals Anton have on the go. Sometimes the college training centres have info on promotional deals and their reps used to go there.
Watching an engineer fix and totally immerse yourself into resolving the problems is fantastic. Your patience and resolve is first class.

You could tell that old boy was an engineer & understood the logic. You also knew yourself you would never made a penny on that job, but your soul is cleansed you will & have slept well since, great sense of self achievment great job. Ollie.
He was an HVAC engineer so knew quite a lot. I didn't make much but it was well worth doing it.. Sometimes engineers forget that money is only part of life. Can you recommend an analyser?
Ollie, that was wonderful!! Considering we fitted them in the early 80’s, it’s so heart warming to see them working like a dream.

How many chancers would’ve had that on the grass on the first visit? But you’re the caliber of a guy that has restored my faith in this industry.

It is a great boiler though. Made well. Comes apart easily and nothing falls apart.
Cant say that about anything made today. Everything is cost driven and designed for 10 years. I'm still waiting to "clean the can" on an old pump.
I keep running into the ERP crap thats super efficient as long as you don't turn it off for a week (then it sticks).
The world is going backwards with manufacturing. :-)

I am also a diagnostic engineer, and I must say I was very impressed with your work. I think one of the best skills somebody in our game can have, is the ability to keep your head whilst things are not going your way.

I love to watch skilled people find hard faults, some people fire the parts cannon at the job and hope for a bullseye. With you i enjoyed how you would not let the boiler beat you and you also learned from solving a very hard problem after others had failed. I have just watched several more of your videos and i am amazed at how many engineers would use a parts cannon , keep up the problem solving and saving customers money.

Kane 458 for me, I find that the Anton's seem to get clogged up with co easier. Never had an issue with the 458.

I cant lift boilers anymore. :-) I had no choice.
10 years ago I cancelled my service contract because most of the engineers didn't know what they were doing. If all engineers were as competent as you I would be happy to pay for a service contract !!

Covid has caused me some problems with my business which is why I disappeared..... Now I'm off work again because my kids have it... But I can edit :-) and the kids are fine so far.

The funny thing is when I arrived on the first visit, I was expecting a much newer boiler that I know really well.... You just adapt :-) What analyser do you use and would you recommend it?
Totally enjoyed this series and your journey into bringing this boiler back to full functionality. You are truly an engineer and not just a vanilla gas engineer who are well versed into installing white boxes on walls safely but that’s about it. I enjoyed your honesty throughout and your approach and determination not to be beaten by it. Your interaction with the customer was great too, who seemed like a knowledgeable guy and a thoroughly nice chap.

Dunno why I'm interested.....not even a heating engineer, (I'm a nurse) don't even have a combo - woodpellet is what we use. Impressed by the level of knowledge and skill you guys need. Took me 2 hours to service the woodpellet boiler today - simple by comparison

I have an 11yr old Gerkros Woodpecker. Like many woodpellet boilers, it has a mixed reputation, but we can't fault it. Not a minutes bother in 11 years. It was properly installed and commissioned which makes all the difference. Simple to service and maintain and an inexpensive way to provide hot water & heating.
There's a medical Consultant who writes articles on Central Heating and Domestic Plumbing, here in Ireland writes articles in a Home Building Magazine, formally worked as a Maintenance Fitter in Guinness Brewery Dublin, then trained as a Doctor and became a very busy Heart Surgeon in the South East, asked about his new elevated position he said," As far as i'm concerned it's just all, Plumbing" I kid you not... Lol....

The most interesting and intriguing boiler repair on TH-cam. Really enjoyed all three parts. I regularly work on lots of old gas appliances, but I've never seen that Vaillant model. Oldest for me would be a Worcester Heatslave (gas) floorstanding Combi. With an open vented heating side! The older models I agree are more interesting as I guess they are more mechanical and less than electronic. I wouldn't have been able to fix this one though as you did so I take my hat of to you. I think everyone could fix this boiler. Its 90% mechanical and thats why. I really like these older boilers. :-)
I’m still nursing my 33 year old Potterton Neataheat, last 3 guys I asked to service it said sorry it’s too old and I need a new one. There are so few parts inside an old boiler that there is not a lot to go wrong, long may she live on. 🚀
The Neataheat has some asbestos seals so you should look up your specific model with serial number to check if it can even be serviced. :-)

Ollie you are most definitely THE MAN.it also goes to show that perseverance is the key to success and your dogged willpower so congrats to you. I personally think that there are very few engineers in this country who would have seen this problem through to a successful conclusion as you did so I think you need to be commended for what you have done for this customer and know for a fact ,you will be the man who sees this boiler yearly until its demise 👊

Just finished watching this 4 part Education, it was at the end of part 3 that I realised it was 00:43 am... Must congratulate you on your Filming & Editing prowess, it must take hours to produce a video of this quality! Had a water leak on my Sine 18 in the mid 90's, from the water diaphragm on the Gas vlv which trashed 2 boards inside the Control box. Sourced replacements and fitted but would not fire up? Had to get a Vaillant Engineer out, fiddled about for an hour or so, and then all of a sudden, it lit and went up like a Hot Air Balloon burner! At the time he had his hand in amongst the pipe work on the RH side of the control box. I asked how he fixed the problem and said 'it must have been a loose wire connection'. I paid him and he left. Got my torch out and had a look and found the reset button with the rubber bonnet on it you showed us in the this vid!
Yeah, the old ones are hard to repair as the knowledge has disappeared with the older engineers. Thanks for take ig the time to comment. :-) I appreciate it.

@@HeatingGeek I personally use Testo. I think once you get use to them they're brilliant. The ppm they can take is high so don't turn off or need to re purge again.

hi ollie i had one EXACTLY the same in my house from 1992 it was in the house before i got it it give up leg's about 2005 it was probably something silly but the plumber said if i was you i would just change the lot ? i could fix it & 2 month's down the line some thing else might go why don't you get a more efficient boiler save money since then till now i have had 2 more boiler's in both have nothing but hastle ton's of part 's giving up a Potterton & my present one is a baxi the worst move i ever did might have been a big ugly thing but no bother until my service guy moved away my valiant died with him moving 🤕 oh and what a cracking bloke you are your knowledge is 100% stay safe

I had a 25 year old combi boiler, the insurance went up each year, the times they came out to fix it was ridicules , then got a new one fitted from British Gas , all ok apart from parting with £2785.25 p , still you must keep worm , nice job you do .

I remember the sine 18 was the first Combi I ever fitted 1984, everyone laughed at me for fitting one. great boilers, but complicated compared to what was around at the time. Just bought myself a new Testo, had good reviews and well pleased with it

Well done, great content & awesome work. That older gent really appreciated your efforts & I'll bet that vaillant combi will still be running easy another 8-10 yrs if you get to look after it. My floor stander is 45 y/o & my partner's combi is 29 y/o. They get regularly serviced. Both running perfectly & while that continues the efficiency savings don't justify replacing them.
Exactly right. The cost savings are not what they seem. :-) Especially when you need parts every few years. :-)
Well done, great to see that old boiler up and running, I had one in my first house, even the Valliant engineer couldn’t fi it, LPG version ,it used to open the front cover door open when it lit up 😜
:-) LPG boilers can do that. Scary :-) Bet you stuck with Vaillant after that boiler. :-)

It wasn't an expensive repair. I know some PCBs that cost more. It worked out well for me and for the customer. :-) What analyser do you use? Would you recommend it?
No engineers left like this as the many jobs people get given means you can only spend 20 min on a job. Then if you don’t know it’s new boiler time,
Advise to any customers watching this is never use a company! Always use an independent as they’ll have more time and heart to fix your boiler
We need to change the industry. Unfortunately no manufacturer or government will ever want us to fix the amount of boilers we could.

@@kevinschoales844 My first old boiler I regularly worked on was the Combicompact. It was also a great boiler. :-)
I would imagine a very high percentage of gas engineers would have condemned that boiler as soon as they looked at it. We have a Halstead Quattro combi boiler which is nearing 35 years old and is still running strong. The only things that have failed on it were the diverter valve diaphragm had split on three occasions (the popular Giannoni valve) and the ignition board.
The diaphragm kits are still available to this day. It may not be as efficient as today's boilers but has outrun many of them.
Exactly. Also the manufacturing cost (both monetary and environmentally) would have been worse on a new efficent boiler.

Mega fix.
I had a VCW Sine18 for 20yrs - and it was prob already 10yrs old when I moved into the house. It finally gave up the ghost in 2011 with hot water not working unless the CH circuit was calling for heat. May have been a simple fix - but I had the boiler replaced with a WB 37CDi for an improved flow rate and efficiency, I doubt may boiulers will last as long as that one has.
Im sure there are a few more sine 18s out there somewhere. :-)

It sure is. It was needed on this boiler.
Any old boiler that has not been serviced regularly will display multiple faults like this SINE. The customer was really lucky to find an engineer like you that was prepared to fix it, but he will call you again in another 5 years and expect you to work miracles again !

I see boilers only a few years old at the scrappers and I look at them and think "There is nothing on that boiler that isn't easily fixable" . All this talk of zombie boilers is just sales propaganda. There are too many manufacturers chasing sales to keep production lines going. Thats why boiler are cheap and parts are expensive. £60 for a plastic bayonet fit AAV with O ring....its a joke. I'm full of admiration for your tenacity and thoroughness. I have to admit I'd have struggled with that one without a proper manual.
Its actually a very easy boiler to work on and diagnose. If you read the manual. :-)
Well done I’m only training at the moment so what do I know but the boiler looks in very good condition for 40 years old
All boilers that are this sort of age usually are. Otherwise they would not have got here.

Great work man. For analyzers, I've always had solid luck with Testo. Have an old 330 right now, contemplating replacing with a 320 when it finally gives up the ghost.
I had a 330 many years ago. cost me £1000 with all the gear.... Used it twice and it got stolen. it did appear to be great. I was absolutely fuming. I got Kane 455s ever since mainly because of the price but it was a great tool. Im so unsure right now though
@@HeatingGeek Yuck, that would definitely sour me. Apparently my info is out of date though, the 320/330 appear to have been replaced by the Testo 300 LL. Looks to be in the $1500-2000 CAD range. That said, if it's as reliable as the 330 that I have or the 550 digital manifold, it'd be worth it long term. One big selling point is that they are easy to get serviced and you know you'll be able to get repair/replacement components for a very long time.
Very thorough mate, installed plenty of Vaillant boilers in the 80s, they were an excellent piece of kit. They were the most expensive on the market at the time, Vokera were also popular at that time, cheaper but inferior to the Vaillant.
Vokera came form a scorned man who wanted to sell Vaillants. AFAIK
Good old days when boilers could be dismantled, rebuilt and not fall apart. Not composite plastic crap with loads of O rings, i hate em..

@@tonymarshall4164 i got called out to a past boiler last week, customer said i installed over 30 years ago, had been maintained by others until won't as of course obsolete Bermuda, however its only gas fire tap at fault, he refuses to have a condensing combi as " they dont make em like this no more"
He will eventually realise he has no other choice.

Testo 327 - work well good price point doesn’t shut off when due a calibration 😡 unlike Anton I think they are great hard case though which has its good and bad points
Norstrom Proflush Magmaster - great for flushing boiler swaps but maybe bulky for boiler only flush but they do a Compact machine too
I don't do Boiler swaps so a compact machine would be better for me. My choices for FGA are kane, Testo EIUK or bluelyzer. I had never see the last 2 before but I might just give them a go. :-)

Waited a long time for this apparent final episode and I must say your perseverance and determination is to be applauded but I need to ask what I am sure other engineers may be thinking was all your hard work and time worth all of the effort in the end? If you say it was then I can only assume it was pride that kept you going but I hope you managed to show a reasonable profit too! As a foot note I could not film and repair at the same time I just would not have your patience and dedication, so thanks HeatingGeek for another fine video and hope younger engineers will take some inspiration from you
The money was ok. I would do it again. The job was worth doing just for the knowledge gained. I really like the older boilers and how they work. New stuff is very very similar so gets a bit boring.
Would you have done it? Also I really do want recommendations for a new analyser. :-)

I would go for a testo 330 i have had mine for about 3 years now much better than the other brands and can with stand a lot of ppms for those boilers that have never been sett up correctly.
Ps expensive to service though
@@HeatingGeek As I am nearing retirement so I probably would have given this boiler a wide berth but years ago I certainly would relish the challenge as you have. As for GFA I have remained loyal to Kane and have never used anything else, it does what I need it to do and re-calibration is a fair price imo

Also I like the new Anton analyser alot of people like Kane but I prefer Anton only problem I find is when you send it for calibration you don't get it back as fast as Kane.
Another thing to point out with Kane it takes a fair amount of time to zero before you can use it compared to Anton.
I agree about the 90 second delay before you can use it. Ali who works with me has an Anton. Not very many recommended them though.

Thanks for the Vid instructive as usual , I know that feeling where you just want to run away lol. Just a crazy number of adverts every couple of mins. Nearly turned off after the first 5-6 only 10mins totally crazy
I used to get loads of adverts but I started using a browser called Brave that someone on here recommended. Do not get a single advert on anything I watch now. Give it a try.
I don't place the adds. TH-cam does. :-) But as Dave T says you can get browsers to stop it. :-) It drives me mad too. (not on my stuff but on other peoples) ;-)
