McCall's M7999 Dress, Sewing EXPO Moments & a Gift!

- McCall's M7999 pattern is an extremely easy and cute dress to make. It's a close-fitting, knit, pullover dress pattern that has sleeve variations. I made it sleeveless and added a gathered tiered ruffle for added length. I made it with only 3 pattern pieces: The front, back and neckband. I also self-drafted a gathered tier from leftover fabric.

Thanks Lara. I love that ITY knit. They still carry it at Vogue Fabrics. The ruffle was the only solution and I'm lucky it worked out. That's the thing about sewing as we have both experienced, we can sometimes encounter a shocking problem and then figure out how to resolve it. Collabs are fun and I'm working on the denim dress for our next month collab! Thank you for collaborating with me on the ETL series last year and continuing with the DD series. You started it all! So frustrating when dresses come out to short but you made a grate save in the end.

Love that first dress❤ I like my dresses and skirts a little longer too so I cut the patterns at least 3 inches below my knees. I am working on a lightweight fabric sleeveless dress at the moment and hope it gets warmer soon so I can wear it.

Nice save on your ruffled hem addition. I like your sleeveless version, too. I’m going to try to use a serger on my next project, too.
Thanks Norma. If you want, sew all the seams on the sewing machine and then serge them to be on the safe side.
I love the dress Grace! And thanks for the idea of using stitch witchery for the hem. I have trouble making my hems look nice with knits.😊💕
Thanks Kathleen, I use Stitch Witchery quite often with knit hems on tops and dresses. It's definitely a pain to work with to avoid gumming up your iron. Be sure to use a pressing cloth. But the end results are wonderful! 🥰💖💖💖
We went to the Lakeland, FL sewing and quilt show. I was so disappointed with less vendors, no yardage cut. All pre cuts. Many vendors were NOT there from years past. We enjoyed it but not the same.
I agree with you. Last year they had much more. I actually went to participate in the Fashion Show.

I like the ruffle on it, but with the material you don’t really see that it is one. I also am happy that you put your measurements in because I’m similar in size, and appreciate that you always state what size you make. I always have to alter because I cut mine in a larger size than I really need to. I lost a lot of weight a few years ago and I still think I’m big. Thank you for sharing your sewing interest with all of us. ❤
That's great Barb! Just go down a size with knit patterns. I generally cut a size 16 in Big4 patterns for wovens and a size 14 for knit patterns. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. ❤❤❤

The expo started out as just sewing. So many of the women that were involved have retired. So over time it has become more about quilting. I sew and quilt so I’m ok with that however more sewers would be wonderful. I wanted to make it to this expo to meet you. Due to illness I wasn’t able to, darn it. However I am attending the one at Cleveland and am taking classes with 2 extremely talented sewers and clothing pattern designers…Judy Kessinger and Patti Otto. Can’t wait. As always you look stunning. Only a few are blessed with your figure so flaunt it. My pear share would not look good in a form fitting dress.

Great save on the dress. I plan to make same pattern no sleeves or collar in short version. Though fabric is similar to your hobby lobby fabric in shade of red, thought it was too plain. So stealing the ruffle design. Thanks for the idea.

QUESTION? If you see that you love a certain fabric but dont have a pattern with you_ how many yards of fabric would you buy for a future dress and be safe to have enough? Thanks
Thanks Bonnie! I'm glad you enjoy my channel. Generally for a dress I would get 2 & 1/2 to 3 yards. Depends how flowy or if it has tiers. Also depends on length. If it's a straight simple knee length dress I get 2 & 1/2 yards. If it's long or if it has multiple tiers, I would get 3 to 4 yards. It all depends on the design of the dress. If it's a knit fabric I get much less fabric. Hope that helps.

Why do you use a percolating coffee pot? Does the coffee taste better?
I've always had a percolator growing up and then I continued buying them. It's all I've ever made coffee with except now we also have a Keurig.

Yes. It's McCall's 7999. I made View A sleeveless and used the neckband instead of the collar. I added a ruffle to the bottom.
