  • The Novation Summit Bi-Timbral Poly Synth arrived for review today and after firing it up we figured it was a good candidate for the Friday Fun - with a dual engine synth based on the Oxford Oscillators (made in FPGA) essentially its like a couple of peaks with a keyboard (there is more obvs).

Less is more - beautifully shown here by Nick... This was one of the most expensive synth videos for me to watch, as it eventually made me press the "order" button after having the Summit in my shopping cart for a few days already. Very mean and sneaky of you, Nick :o) All the best, love and light to you from Thailand

    1) keybed quality: feeling, dynamics, velocity, noises, clickings-tickings, reaction on hard pressure
    2) midi routing complexity and external gear manipulation using summit as a master keyboard: split keyboard and assign different midi channels on each of part for output , while listening other midi channels on each of two layers from output.
    3) fm-stability for any routing (except self-looping)
    4) different in sound design in comparison with peak. dual filter separation modulation examples please ;)
separate resonance control on dual filter?
separate audio range mod from osc3 on each part of dual filter?
separation is a additive unipolar addition to cutoff frequency, or additive and subtractive on both part of filter from the cutoff?
possibility of changing dual-filter combinations (routing) as a modulation destination in mod matrix?
new wavetables? new destinations in mod matrix? new settings? aftertouch feelings, aftertouch polyphony

I think one of the most over looked, and least used controls on the Summit is the unispread function. 3,4, and 8 voice voice selection, and go play with the unispread option. Great way to make this beast even fatter or add a different timbre that might surprise you

The Peak is my favorite modern polysynth. Despite the duplication, I really want the Summit. It's such an amazing synth.

    • @sK3LeTvM1
      @sK3LeTvM1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is. Summit has kinda 'darkish' edge. I've compared it at home with Deepmind, Kyra, Hydra and the decision was quite simple...Deepmind is cheap but lacks waveforms and a 3rd OSC. Kyra has a zillion OSC's and possibilities, but sounds very digital and 'sterile'. And Hydra ? Good sound but only 8-voice...Aarrgh. So I hope you bought the Summit. I own a Peak and made some really extraordinary sounds with it that go from very digital to very analog... Now I'm waiting for my X-mass gift from my wife... A Summit on top !!! Hell yeah.

Now that analog has run its coarse, again, maybe we can all appreciate the digital/analog synths and the expansive sound pallet of using digital or analog or, both. Is the analog snobbery over yet :) ? Lets have more of both analog and digital dancing together to create truly new sounds from one synth.

Great harmonies, Nick. I like the Reverbtail on the upper sound. The quality is really dense and becomes not metallic in the end of the decay. And... the cool feature with the red and blue color of the pitchbend and the modwheel, when switching between upper and lower. This is very handy.

No shift functions on the Peak/Summit. The screen is big enough, shows three parameters at a time - you select a section from the buttons above it, and left/right to the page you want (e.g. select Mod and page right 5 times to get to mod matrix slot 5), so it's not too deep, like some labyrinthian synths of the 90s and early 2000s. But there's plenty there.
Also entirely possible to do a whole patch without using any menus, and many of the modulation sources on the panel even multiplex several modulation sources, like wave shape, you can set amounts for LFO1, EG2, and a Manual amount, simultaneously, just with the front panel controls.
Summit has more controls than the Peak, though they both have 99% the same synth voice and FX parameters, it just puts a bit more on the panel. Like Peak has LFO3/4 in the menu, whereas it has a panel section for that on the Summit. Biggest difference is that Summit has a split pole filter mode and FM on the front panel (and of course the bitimbrality).

Great melodies Nick, I always enjoy hearing you play these instruments.
In your reviews i like to hear you discuss the envelopes, that would be my request.
Sounds gorgeous to my ears, and looks like a serious instrument. Novation have really stepped up the game. Cheers Nick

The summit has finally begun shipping! Http://www.MajorOSC.com there's a killer patch bank available for the summit. Def worth checking out. Calc from novation picked it up too! He's been demoing it on the summit now for several months. Cheers! :)

Bit late now, I've had all 3 of those and many others like the Polybrute, rev 2, etc....Summit offers a much broader sonic palet, without doubt the very best Effects on any hardware synthesizer and one of the best designed for hands on knob control you can get.
An absolute killer synth, I'm not surprised the prices of new ones have gone up a lot over it's time.
I've sold many synthesizers over the decades, but this is the only one I've ever regretted...I'm actually looking for another now, I'll gladly trade the Polybrute for one.

Also i have a question about fm synthesis. I had a problem with my novation peak. Can you stable fm osc1->osc2->osc3 on the same frequency or two more complex (eg zing) wavetable on the same frequency?
Was it fixed at the summit?
    1) If you modulate a wavetable by wavetable most often (for almost all harmonically rich wave tables, eg zing->zing), the frequencies of wave tables fail: you need to increase the carrier frequency through fine tuning by + 25 for 63 value FM oscA>oscB (if maximum fm amount) (fine tune +25 for 63 fm amount proportionally)
    2) If you create a 3-operator fm patch, for example, osc1-> osc2-> osc3, the frequency osc1 must be greater than osc2 by at least a fifth, otherwise an unpredictable effect begins (e.g., inharmonic if they are on the same frequency)
