Agree. It’s nice to hear about people’s thought process. And what they like and don’t like about their gear. I always like to hear about the stuff people don’t like about a piece of gear cause you can never get that in a review - you actually have to sit down and play it!
Great to see Jo Hyde on Sonic State. I was taught by Jo at university a decade ago, and last month had the pleasure of playing on a line up with him. A lovely guy and fantastic musician.
Mr. Batt, I do so lurve your videos, and this series is no exception. That said, this was a delightful highlight. (Full disclosure: MD Mk. II owner here.) You're gracious/generous with your guest, and the vibe here is human and playful in the best way. Cheers mate.
I keep coming back to this, it has to be the most unique and interesting demo of the Machinedrum I've ever heard. It really captures the spirit of the box - that it's so much more than a drum machine.
Jo Hyde is not just a stand out artist but a fine teacher. I did a Masters with Jo a few years ago and the main thing Jo teaches, and what is demonstrated here, is a mindset that really gets under the skin of sound and sound creation. Top stuff.
Love this. I would love to see more Friday jams with guest artists. Also great to see the machine drum get some love. It is to this day, an amazing instrument.
Wow - I only realised halfway through his set that this guy doesn't have a right thumb! That's intense! Makes his skills even more impressive than I already thought!
At first i was thinking - Just how interesting can a jam with a drum machine and a couple of pedals be? Great sounds, great performance. Pretty inspiring stuff.
Wow, what a great addition to the friday fun! You should do this more often. It's really nice to see what synth enthusiast can do with a minimalistic set up. Thanks again and again! P.S.: Nick, I hope you'll be there at the Thomann thing next year, you where the missing link.
Well done Joseph Hyde and Nick for such an informative and enjoyable vid. Thanks too Nick for the mention for Breezeblock Beats in Frome. Maybe we could get you to do a little set before Christmas?
Hyde knows wtf he's doing. I've had an OT mkII sitting in its box since April, because I'm afraid of its complexity (I knew it was complex before I bought it, but damn.) What he said about having to get inside of the Elektron mindset made perfect sense (I think this is why there's a pretty loyal Elektron user culture.) Ergo, time to put in the work. It won't cook me breakfast, and it won't teach me how to use it. Thanks--->Joseph. I needed this kick in the ass.
Don’t be afraid. I got into Elektron, through a simpler machine, with a Digitakt. But the OT just look at it like an RPG and you get to take it to whatever level you want at whatever pace is best for you, just you have the whole package instead of a smaller portion of options. I just learned how to use the sampling and worked on live sequencing and then when I get some groove going I like then I start layering in repeats and I haven’t even got into trig conditions yet. And I’ve owned it for a year. So just go for what you want to start on and just enjoy the random weird stuff you can stumble into. It’s not difficult, but it can get deep and really does make you think in a more planned approach and it is intimidating at first if you try and think about it. But exploring it is really just what you should see it as and eventually you’ll discover those songs, sounds, and fresh new bits you were dreaming of creating.
14.00 in! I've got a machine drum and thought hat it was broken for ages, took it apart and got it back up a and running, it was my first drum machine and favourite, as you can see fro this vid you can fully sculpt the sound. nice edition to sonic state thanks!
This is fantastic! I love the unabashedly digital nature of the Machinedrum. I have an Analog Rythm MK2 and I love that thing... but I can't help but feel that the drum machine I really want is the MD. Then again, things always good in the hands of experts. :) Gonna see what I can squeeze out of my AR.
That was wicked! I had no idea that that old box could sound like that...it's just a drum machine isn't it? erm... no.... it's (the best era of) Warp Records in a box!
Machindrum is far more than a kick, snare and a hat. This is a great synthesizer for a rythmic cold and abstract structures. I love it but I prefer to use it paired with another tool like an analog synth, vintage sampler or a walkman with warm pad on a cassette. It is nice to somehow balance the coldness comming from the MD.
f*ck google prices have been steadily rising since they were discontinued way before this video was even thought of. In the grand scheme this video won’t change anything ;)
Mine was over $1500 U.S. that I bought yesterday, sold on it thanks in part to this video and Max Marco’s excellent demos... (mint Mk2 with +drive and upgraded knobs) .. Price was somewhat of a bitter pill to swallow, tempered by the idea that 10+ years from now, it’ll hold its value and maybe even increase.
Good stuff! The part at 15:32 reminds me of the soundtrack to the 1st Resident Evil movie (2002) which I love. Sadly that franchise only went down hill from there. Sonically it totally makes sense for this machine and that era though. Well done!
need little machine, interesting sounds ... just asking why not using the oktatrack or the digitrack? more videos like this ... art in the making is interesting
Bruno Wiebelt synthesis, not samples, also 16 tracks, not 8. But still, why use anything over anything else? Because it’s there and you like how it works, sounds?
@@politesociety that was a good answer ... with envelops/lfos , wavetables and so on the borders between the sample and synthesis world .. kind of disappears anyway
Paul Horsley Breezeblock Beats in Frome Somerset. Usually monthly and the next one is in September. I’ve done a few and they’re always different, well worth the effort for sure.
More guests please! I’m fascinated with other people’s process and sound.
yeah would love to see this as a regular format
hear hear
i agree! also these Friday funs are interesting cause its not just focused on new gear
Agree. It’s nice to hear about people’s thought process. And what they like and don’t like about their gear. I always like to hear about the stuff people don’t like about a piece of gear cause you can never get that in a review - you actually have to sit down and play it!

I really enjoyed both parts of this: the discussion and explanation, and then Joseph's performance.
I like this video so much, watched it dozens of times, and will watch it again, Joseph Hyde is a genius.
I keep coming back to this, it has to be the most unique and interesting demo of the Machinedrum I've ever heard. It really captures the spirit of the box - that it's so much more than a drum machine.
Love seeing setups like this where someone just tries to get the maximum out of one instrument or piece of equipment.
@Bratislav Metulski Huh?
Wow, that's an amazingly beautiful and twisted piece of music. Damn, every time I hear one of these machines I want one even more...
This was awesome! Yes indeed more guests like this!
Excellent left-field sounds... nice to see a clever minimalist approach.
Still THE best drum machine/drum synth every created. I’d take it over the TRs any day. So glad that I’ve gotten my hands on one will never give it up
Very nice. Well done Nick! I really like this guest format.
Wish Elektron would release an updated Machinedrum. It would sell well.
So fun seeing him fidget with the menu diving to access mute! I do that all the time! Sounds great!
Jo Hyde is not just a stand out artist but a fine teacher. I did a Masters with Jo a few years ago and the main thing Jo teaches, and what is demonstrated here, is a mindset that really gets under the skin of sound and sound creation. Top stuff.
I've owned the first gen Machine Drum since release. I would never have thought of setting it up like this. Great stuff
I own a MD MK1 and I used of a bit, but it has been gathering dust, i think I need to play it some more.
if youre not using it you can give it to me:)
give it to me :)
This made my morning! More guests and discussions!
Love this. I would love to see more Friday jams with guest artists. Also great to see the machine drum get some love. It is to this day, an amazing instrument.
I see an EHX pedal and a Machinedrum and I click faster than ever.

Nick is the Godfather in absentia of the Thomann thing - the Godfather is present in spirit, and that's enough. 😉
@@edwardprue 😂🤣😂😝🤧👍👍👍
Thanks for having this guy on!
one of my old lectures at Bath uni! nice to see this
same here, class of 2017
thanks for making second-hand prices of this model going sky high ... really appreciate.
Higglety pigglety :D
This guy is awesome. That's my favorite thing in synths... just take one synth and explore all of it's possibilities.
That was great! Cool idea for a Friday Fun episode!
Well done Joseph Hyde and Nick for such an informative and enjoyable vid. Thanks too Nick for the mention for Breezeblock Beats in Frome. Maybe we could get you to do a little set before Christmas?
Extremely pleasing.
"higaldy pigaldy sound system"
Band name, calling it!
Twiddle LP
Name reserved.."hPSY - higaldy pigaldy sound system"
followed by the Under The Bonnet EP
I've always wanted to hear this machine in action. And now someone has this hooked to a EH Delay.
Nice.
I still like the MD more than the Rytm. Just sounds more textured and abstract.
Same

Michael Smith I wonder how this compares to an Octatrack in user-friendliness and General sounds?

This was funny on end, enjoyed it.Thewre is man on YT who mastered Machine to...Max Marco . ..
hey now! you're making me blush!
@@maxmarco Love your Octatrack videos, wish I had a MD too
+1 for Marco! 🤖❤️🤖
Agree, Max is a master.
Max Marco is the man!!!!!!!
Classic machine, will never get rid of it!
The MD sounds like nothing else. Lofi digital with tons of virtual analog tweeking posibilities. And so easy to use (with a few exceptions).
One Box. One Beat. Excellent track!

from spotting nick in a crowd to playing on sonicstate!! cool story bruh!
Nice performance! Really liked the extruded digital formants Mr. Hyde was coaxing out of those sounds.
That was very nice indeed!
Cool jam! This cat really knows his way around the Machinedrum.
Very interesting! Nice minimalist approach!
Nice minimalistic setup. Grungy, gritty and cool sounds - pushing the envelope - I like it!
Well done! Please more of this!
i whip a set with just a machinedrum and it changed my LIIIIFE
Nice to see a guest and another style...
Really nice, both the explanation and the performance!
awesome and inspiring

Andrew Brooks Machinedrum never gets old!!
A fine performance! The breakup on the kick just before the track closes out sounds brilliant!
Machinedrum is a classic already. Absolute monster
@Boofsquad yeah, not really
@Boofsquad did I hurt your feelings by disagreeing with your tantrum?
Just some crying baby hating on random strangers music taste based on my own assumptions, who are you?
Totally out of line random reply....am I doing this right?
J R kind of. Needs a bit more internet fighting over personal tastes and opinions to really have an impact on society

Excellent demo - well done!
Thanks both...yep nice vibe jam! With lots of FM goodness.
The whole thing starting at 10:50 actually sounds pretty good!
This , a cheap multi fx box on each out as insert, say zoom g1, and a project mixer with verb/delay and chorus on the other send. Worlds your oyster.
omg so true
Brilliant 👍
Dude this guy was dope !!!!!
The moment i found out how Machinedrum 's Parameter Locks work, I realised i need to sell half of my studio haha
Still my favourite drum machine! One piece of gear I'll never part with. The kicks really hit hard.
god damn it sonicstate, i was eyeing one for a while now and now the prices will rise again:(
f*ck google prices have been steadily rising since they were discontinued way before this video was even thought of. In the grand scheme this video won’t change anything ;)
It’s definitely a double edged sword. On one hand I never would have heard of the elektron world, however that also attracts higher demand :(
I hope Elektron brings up a redesigned Machinedrum MKII

This is super dope
Filthy Magic !
mad when you actually see full on fluency with something. SICK
It's really only one piece of gear I ever wanted from them and that was the mono machine.. I love that synthesizer.. but alas.. I don't have $2,000..
You will one day, keep working and saving. I'm 36 and only just got mine.
It has Solo mode now thanks to the unofficial X04 update
The X firmware is absolutely incredible, isn't it? I love the Solo mode, it's so performative. :D
Good part starts at 10:44
Strong Killer7-vibe.. (videogame.. I think the save rooms in the game had a similar tune)
Incredible!
Savage!
Machine Drum luv. Nick gets it.
Excellent!
OT3 coming?
From one MD guru to another, well done sir, well done.
hecking amazing!!!
Rerelease the Monomachine...prices are insane. I love MD, and I currently only have a standard MKII.
Joshua Elliott I feel your pain. I cracked and forked over the credit card for one... I guess you could say I’ll be paying for that later
Cheers chaps, crunchy goodness. :)
Excellent stuff. More random folks please!
😜 Mr. Hyde might take issue with that suggestion!
I always had my eyes on the MD but never really got one.
Joseph and his sibling Alix are incredible musicians
Super inspirational ty.
beast
Get this guy back on now that the Machinedrum has that PHAT, yummy update!!
does this model have a sid mode?
No, the Monomachine has that if I remember correctly.
It has multiple raw oscillators including a square triangle and pulse wave, all of which include multiple notes that can play at once for chords.
Dope like a bad police man.
His ted talk and other YT videos are also interesting
Good stuff! The part at 15:32 reminds me of the soundtrack to the 1st Resident Evil movie (2002) which I love. Sadly that franchise only went down hill from there. Sonically it totally makes sense for this machine and that era though. Well done!

Indiana USA.
Can’t we do all this on a Rytm folks?
I want to know how he accurately pitches notes on the fly, not that I see him doing that here, but still
The X firmware allows for 'tonal' mode which locks the pitch knob to actual tones. The Elektron firmware not not pleasant to program melodic stuff on.
Where is this open mic night I would love to go ?
Paul Horsley Breezeblock Beats in Frome Somerset. Usually monthly and the next one is in September. I’ve done a few and they’re always different, well worth the effort for sure.
