I had a 97 MK3 GTI VR6 twin turbo. That was the funnest/ most reliable non turbo to turbo build I ever driven that car was neck to neck in reliability with my wife’s 07 Honda Accord 2.4l in stock form. We both drove our cars for 5 years, and both only had to do regular oil changes, tuneup, and tire changes. And mind you that was my first car I actually set out to build. it cost me my high school savings working at ihop. Ended up with like 5k into the turbo build. And another 2k in suspension. And what made it all super nice was the tune. The tune and who you pick to tune your car will always be the factor that determines if your car will be reliable and fun. Or a money pit then a blown engine… DO iT Right. Nd always use oem Bosch parts where you can. NGK plugs, amsoil oil, and Mann or wix filters..
So is literally every car since OBD2 became common use. And it's known in the audi community that a K04 on stock ecu is a noticeable upgrade. Tuning and slightly less tiny injectors will obviously yield more power but only because of factory boost pressure being a measly 12psi
Hahhaha. Dude. 24psi 20 hold is going to be the same no matter what. That's where the wastegate is set to open. It does spool a tad later and high end feels better and doesn't fall off as much as k03. I can see what you mean if it was on the factory tune. Anyway. Over 3k mileage on this turbo and still going strong. Taking Subaru's to gapplebees on the weekly. Cheers
@Kuma Ma-kun its simple and direct. Just undo the old stuff and swap in the new stuff and make sure that you use new crush washers on the coolant and oil feed lines on the turbo.
Different waste gate provides more resistance before opening which allows higher boost levels even on stock tune. N75 valve upgrade would come in handy
I'll be sure to let you know if it blows up. Because as of right now it's running beautifully and putting the hurt on most the turbo 4's around. Cheers
Ran an eBay 60mm on a stage 2 tune on my gti when I went to get it retuned only thing they had to was adjust for was me putting in larger injectors but even on the stage 2 the car learned when it needed to add and take away fuel. The computers in the mk4 platform are very good at learning and adjusting

I’m thinking of doing the same. Have you done it yet? JohnWick KOBK it’s literally almost identical to a k03s which the car was already tuned for. This turbo did help the boost not fall off as much. With the k03 it felt like it fell on its face past 6k rpm. Now it pulls to 7k happily.

Ok so i watched it full. Im not a pro but i dont think thats a genuine ko4 looks like the chinese copy ? Ill upload a video of mine onday if you ever see this comment and see the difference
D4MO tv it’s a k04-001. There are many k frame turbo models. This was the same as a k03s in aspects of simply bolting on. Other k04 you will need a lot of extra work to make fit. Imo not worth it. May as well go big turbo.
So is this turbos me exact size as a k03s or bigger..in the beginning if the video he says "sitting in the box is a k04 turbo" bit a k04 turbo has a different design and won't just bolt up to a stock k03s setup I thought??

Compressor surge is not good. If your diverter valve isn’t actuating its hooked up to a bad vacuum source. Should be manifold vacuum. I’d make a new vacuum line up and make sure its tight and tied to absolute manifold vacuum. It also might mean the valve may be opening up at peak boost causing boost to fall off up top. Just my $.02 feel free to flame me.

Ever since I upgraded my GTI (AUM (E-gas)) with an KO4, bigger Injectors, new MAF (I already upgraded full milltek, with decat long time ago) - I have had every cylidner misfire - I have tried replacing the plugs -> No Change, then the coils, still no change. - At coldstart it makes popping in the exhaust, and hesitates to go - and it doesn't sound very pleasent - nothing like pops n bangs? - Also when warm, at times, it missfires alot, and struggle to keep alive, at a redlight for instance. - Also, it feels like it's drowning petrol, or so it doesn't want to go - for instance, if it has been missfiring at a stop - or If I have been playing with the gas pedal, to make some smaller/medium pops n bangs(for the enjoyment)?? - (I was told by a friend, that the tune needed a lot of petrol, to keep the turbo cool?) - could it be feeding to much fuel, and drowning itself? or what is happening? Anyone?? It is needed to say, that the car usually feels fine, and quick - but it is very annoying - and it doesn't feel right. I still need a FMIC btw!

I have the same turbo but can’t get the oil return line banjo bolt on. The one on the top of the turbo it doesn’t want to line up any advice also still have my exhaust manifold on
The Worlds largest turbo in the old Volkswagen Golf GTI bro!
Guys, bought it twice, max pressure for reliability its 1.1/1.4 Bar, sorry im spanish xd. Mine spiked to barely 2bar and still running, so worth for 124 maxpeeding rods k04 for k03
I picked up a yellow 20th anniversary a few months ago!!!
Damn thought the Hulk was in your vid looks like Mark Ruffalo a bit thanks for the info gonna throw one on my 1.8t Jetta cause I can't afford vw replacement cost
With that set up and a proper map can see gains of up to 280 Bhp comfortably at 260bhp you can hear your not even using what that turbo can do, its mapped for a smaller turbo with a earlier prolonged boost now you have a mo4 which usually give you more boost at higher rpm you need to map it it's not getting the air flow
JohnWick KOBK it’s literally almost identical to a k03s which the car was already tuned for. This turbo did help the boost not fall off as much. With the k03 it felt like it fell on its face past 6k rpm. Now it pulls to 7k happily.
I bought an AGU 1.8T 20V for £ 80 iv put k04 saab injectors large intercooler and 2.5 inch piping new miltek fully stripped out 2 seats bigger brakes just going thru mapping everything in the car and parts has set me bk £1460
Any updates on the longevity of this turbo?
Still alive and well last I heard.
Still alive and well last I heard. Another local kid owns it now.
My lcr has 180k on the clock and the same ko4 turbo from factory , still pulls hard, just depends really, it's luck of the draw
Dude u need to run 3 inch straight pipe it would sound so much better I did it to mine with a stage 2 tune it sounds amazing
Its already 3 inch turbo back.
@@r1l3y91ef so straight pipe? Because it doesnt sound like a straight pipe tbh
Straight pipes on a 1.8t sounde like a tractor lmao
@@muntadherrashid7236 right now it only has resonator. In the video it had a resonator and a muffler. Tbh I kinda miss my OEM exhaust with just the catless dp and muffler delete. You could hear a lot more turbo whistle. Then when I went with the 3 inch turbo back it got deeper tone wise but doesn't whistle like it did. .....
@@r1l3y91ef i have a 3 inch catless downpipe to stock exhaust and its way too quiet. I wanna get a 2.5 inch magnaflow exhaust but thats expensive lol. I might just delete the muffler and see how it sounds like
Glad to see a utah car youtuber! I grew up in Utah county, awesome videos!
Thanks for watching man!
A brand new Borgwarner turbo will have some play, not to that degree by any means. But it's still far from "toasted", it's just a different design/style of turbo bearing.
It was passing oil into my intercooler. Haha. It's the most play I've felt on a turbo to this day.
@@r1l3y91ef well then the seals are definetly gone.
I've had a brand new k03-005 on my B5 and it had a fair bit of play, I've also had a used 8,000km k03-029 and it was the same, only a little less then your current one haha.
Sweet car btw.
@@MatWilson2612 thank you! The m3 vs budget golf video should be coming soon!
That be is identical to mine even same colour 😍.. I haven't seen many of these vws getting around anymore.
lol that old turbo isn't really that bad. also it isn't "leaking out the seals" because there are no seals. The oil is held in with air pressure. Oil coming out is normal.
The brass bushings sure are seals hahaha. That turbo had way more play than most of the turbos I’ve ever had haha.
That car is fresh as fuck for the mileage!
🙏
its funny bc that old ko3 turbo looks completely fine...
Except the huge amount of oil it was leaking into the charge pipes.
holy compressor surge !!!!!!!! it sounds badass but its nog good!
Watch the coilover video. I explain how I fixed it.
He needs a better Diverter Valve its not blowing off causing air back into turbo causing the stuutuutu but slowing down the spool.
Look at the suspension video. I already fixed it.
U gonna need to map it in.plus get the dv hooked up properly or u will have a knackered turbo soon
Michael Horsman it’s been fixed v
I had my k04 oversized. With a unitronic stage 2+ it’s a beast. Get it mapped with the tt225 injectors and MAF, you’re gonna love it!!
I think if I do anything more to this car I'm building a motor and going big turbo.
Lol. I fabbed up a k04-022 (from the S3/TT225) to my A4 1.8t and ran it at 29psi. Spike 35😂 that was STUPID fun. Was quick as shit too. I ATE up CHRAs every couple months because i was pushing past the ragged edge of compressor efficiency but it was seriously fun, and i run BATs or large medium frames on all my Audis currently😂. I still loved that k04-022 build😂 i basically downscaled thw fueling on a spicy gt2871r tune i wrote and smoothed everything else out. It was a blast. NOT bolt in. Had to plasma cut a flange and weld it to a tubular header. Highly recommend. I could swap a CHRA in 40minutes or completely rebuild and swap the turbo in at the end of that build cycle😂 moved on because i started SHEARING the turbine shafts😂 happened 2x.
I have a maxpeeding rods turbo and it rips low key pretty good for the price
How many miles you got on it?
whistlingturbskis Mine has 279k km
Is this a real upgrade? It must be shit cus its sooo cheap
Really enjoyed this content .!! Please keep blessing him with more a4 gti product lol 😂
Did the flautering sounds ever get fixed yet.
Had the same thing and friend ran line to intake manifold and holds boost better.
Yeah just used a diff diverter valve and routed vacuum to brake booster.
I had to get a better diverter valve. I got the adjustable spring rkx valve. My vacuum line was fine.
so have a golf that my dad picked up for $1500 and it pulls WAY harder than this golf and so I’m wondering, wtf did they do to it? It’s a 1.8T like this. It was $1500 because the whole front end needed to be rebuilt. Mine isn’t a GTI either, it’s been rebadged with the GTI and rabbit logo the the 20th anniversary (but mines an 01 so it can’t be the 20th). Very confused, but very fun to drive.
You also can’t assume that the way a video looks correlates to actual feeling.
Man I have a 1.8t Audi and it doesn’t pop like that, what tune is he running?
06atechnik.com 1.8t stage 2
What year?
we should meet and make a racket lol, mine sounds the exact same, spent about the same, im with my stock k03s and its great like you said
The K04’s come factory on Mazdaspeed 3’s, just fyi.
Hi, i only watched the video quick because im in work .. i have a mk4 gti , AGU (1999) . I rebuilt my engine and stage 3 remap with the ko4 turbo from the lcr , pushing around 350bhp . What mods did your friend do? Also im not sure about the ko4 there? Was that a sidemount or straight down likw the ko3? Im pretty sure a genuine ko4 has a side mount (exhaust ) so you need to get the custom made down pipe. I run a single decat 3" on mine , Ill try watch the video properly later
STUTUTUTUTUU!
Did you change the MAP sensor? You'll get more boost using a 4 bar.
I'm in the UK I got the same GTi but with straight side pipes bangs in all gears like a gun
Dickhead lool
Thinking of getting this turbo for my 2.0 mk4
The 2.0 is shit, just sell it and get a 1.8t
K04 with stock injectors, stock maf, stock intercooler, k03 map and no divertervalve...good luck 😅
Lol. Still alive and well. 255k on it now.
what turbo hose you used that goes from turbo to the air filter
a k04 itself w built internals and bored out w a eurodyne tune
Bigger rods and injectors,
Catless 3” DP
that E36 would not stand a chance
I love eurodyne tunes. 500 bucks gets you stock, stage 1, stage 2 and K04
150 k04? the fuck? id love a k04 for my mk5. The power and specs you get id be very happy with
So is this turbos me exact size as a k03s or bigger..in the beginning if the video he says "sitting in the box is a k04 turbo" bit a k04 turbo has a different design and won't just bolt up to a stock k03s setup I thought??
john m k04-001 will bolt up the same as a k03s it’s necessary to have a silicone turbo inlet though.
Did you need to change the injectors for this to work or would it be okay on a stage1 revvo mapp with fmic 3 inch dwnpipe to miltek box 80 mm maff ramair induction would it be okay to take it too stage 2 with out upgrade on the injectors
Yo I had to stop the video to say this. Guy is rolling his turbo in the grass 😂😂😂😂😂
How many miles did it last at what psi
What’s the set-up on that golf 1.8t to make it turbo
Flutter like that!
no diverter valve, but isn't good for your turbo :/
He reminds me of the one guy from small soldiers
hello, how's the turbo holding? how's the customer support?
Turbo is still alive and well. Can’t tell you about the customer support.
I just ordered that turbo what turbo inlet pipe did you end up using ?
I had a eurojet turbo inlet pipe.
Yo I got a dumb question I live in Vegas where there's no 93 just 87 91 and 89 and from what I've heard not from internet but from a buddy of mine you can mix feul to get 93 I'm wondering this because I'm getting a 04 be Passat 1.8t
My tune was written on 93 octane. But we only have 91 here and it runs great.
Hey its been some time now and was curious if the turbo is still holding up. I'm looking to go this route ko4-001 from maxpeedingrods if you could let me know any info I'd appreciate it
Hey! Have you bought that maxspeedingrods turbo? I'm interested in seeing if it lasts at least for some time hahaha

I have a 1.8t golf gti it has the k04 with apr stage 2 tune with 550cc injectors. It's running rich and I think I need to do smaller injectors calling apr tomorrow for some tips but trying to get any advice I can lol it pulls strong but here and there it sputters like its either getting to much airflow or fuel or not enough of one or the other
Your golf had ko3 or KO3s? I have a 2004 Mk4 gti 1.8t with KO3s stock, is it worth to upgrade with a KO4?
It was a gls. So it just had a k03.
you homie seems chill asf
That thing is fucking sick. My Audi a4, same motor. Just about same miles. Is slow as dog shit. That car scoots dude, that cool
whats the exhaust setup on that? sounds really good!
Maybe I should use that turbo on my 2.0 aba
1996-2006 1.8t people want your crankshaft for 2.0 stroker build! Lol
Where did you get the ko4 kit I need one both my best friends have v8s and I’m running ko3 with 5 psi 😢
I'd suggest going back to factory injectors and try a 06atechnik tune. That's what the car in the video has. I'm still on factory injectors with the k04 and it's been flawless once I got the compressor surge issue worked out.
Bigger injectors without a mapping them in makes your car misfire lol....
@@andreicioranu1105 But I did have it mapped, just a base map - bad news tho - the k04 exploded (after 4 months of driving + - 35k Miles bought used)... So I bought a new one - Getting a front mounted intercooler with the install aswell, and calling the guys, who mapped my car to do a fine tuning - Should do the trick (I hope) :p
Chrisjumper96 get maestro and tune the car yourself
Chrisjumper96 Coolant temp sensor.
Did you need a new TIP or anything else? Or were they all the same size as the K03?
Yes. You’ll need a turbo inlet. The k04 is larger then a the k03
How long do these run for?
I actually got a gt3582r big turbo from max an it's great
Dammit man, I just bought a 2 door Mk4 Golf and it's a 2.0 8 valve 5 speed, and I would love to get a 1.8t swap for it. I would really like to at least turbo the 2.0, and I have everything but a manifold and a way to tune it. I have a 612 whp EJ8 Civic coupe, so I have some universal parts stocked up.
2.0 is a good motor to daily. But you'd be better off just buying a car with a 1.8t already in it
How is the turbo now? Still running fine? No leaks or whatever?
Still good. I sold the car about 8 months ago. But I stay in contact with the current owner. He says she’s still going strong.
i grew up in that neighborhood. that’s in ogden next to weber state😎
So did u just bolt it on, cuz u said it had a little bit bigger exhaust, so can I just swap out the ko3 for the ko4? Thanks
The only thing that wasn’t directly bolt on was it needed a silicone turbo inlet
You'll never see full potential of that turbo without injectors and larger maf
Who cares. It's a daily that's fun. I'm honestly surprised as hell that it still runs after 200k miles on og motor.
could i put that on a 2001 jetta wolfberg edition
Make an update bout the turbo
I sold the car. But I’m in touch with the current owner. He’s had no issues with the tune or the turbo.
hey guys great job! Nice shoots! Question, do you remap your software by you own? i have a TTMK1 APP engine and i would like to upgrate him by my own. Do you have a tip how to modificy my ECU? Thanks guys.
