Dude please never stop doing what you do. Got my AWP Jetta impounded a couple years ago and it really got me down. The MK4s are really something special and its super cool that you make these videos, I get absolutely jacked just hearing some of these rides you work on, it totally inspires me to get another one. My first VW was a VR6 and although theyre a one of a kind, with the options and the tunability with the 1.8s i think ill go with the latter next time around. Cheers.
I would like to add, back in 2008 when I was putting a gt3071r on my car(1984 Jetta GLi with AWP swap) it was hilarious how people said it would never spool and suck, make now usable power, etc. years later the gt3071/gtx3071 are considered, as Dave said, an appropriately sized turbo lol. My how times changes.
As a MKIV Golf and B5 A4 owner i really love this and those wheels. I wish these turbos and the 2871 were easily available still. Cheers, chapeau and continued success for all you guys hard work and knowledge sharing.

Great videos. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, and this amazing content. I just picked up a (stock) 2004 1.8t Golf GTI that you have inspired me to build :)
First off been binge watching your TH-cam channel while on std amazing channel by far if I can get a little more on the build bought a stock 04 and has blown turbo and issue with ecu causing a intermittent starting issue so building it and this build is sweet just hoping to get 3 to 320 safely
You can make plenty of power on a 3071, great turbo. Made 596 on a 3071 gen 1 couple years back. Went with a 3582 gen 2 and trying to finish the build, so we’ll see what it does. Keep it up guys.
If you don't mind sharing, what kind of advance do you run on these at say 20psi on a 3071 for 91 octane? I'm considering trying to find a 1.8t a4 quattro and running about this sort of power/setup to start out. As my current never ending project I have a turbo m30 bmw in an e12 that i've done all the tuning myself running 25psi on 91+ octane booster on a 3582. I brought it all the way down to about 8 degrees to not get knock at peak torque with various different setups over the years and this has all been done by ear. I've never dyno'd it but it should be running 400-450whp it spins third at 55mph with 225s, i'll say i'm doing alright considering i haven't scattered it all over the road haha. Driveshafts and wheel hubs are a different story.
I love your videos, youre doing great work. I have a TT mk1 1.8t auq 180hp with FIC, 3'' downpipe,, silicon intake pipe, K03s what you think is a save hp number for stock block? i want to reach 300 but im scared because of the high mileage almost 190k miles or 300k km. What tipps you have... I want to go with the k04-001 maxpeedingrods and i also have 470cc injectors and 330L/h fuel pump. I really like to hear your tipps :)
It's the torque figures you need to watch not the horsepower, from what I read around the place 350HP is where the torque will be getting you near walking on thin ice. Save your money and don't buy maxspeedingrods parts man, buy quality so you only have to buy it once. With the high mileage engine it would be a good investment to buy some quality rods bearings rings and headstuds to keep it happy for much longer.
That's a rare bird right there.. what number what it out of the 1500? I might be wrong but I thought they were numbered like the 20ths. It's been awhile since I've seen one.
Never enough 1.8T content! I’ve got a question, will Dave remote tune? No tuners in my area, and I’m running just a standard unitronic BT 630cc tune. Once I built the AEB head for my 20th (already has rods and pistons,) I really want to get a custom tune.

Hi love the videos I’ve got a question for you ? Why on the mk5 golf gti vw swapped the pipes to the turbo around ?? The intercooler goes to the turbo fan and air filter to the top ?? Just curious because on most turbo cars they do it the other way like they do on the 1.8t 20v ? Again great video
I know I'm not the person you asked but I don't really understand the question. I have a 1.8T Audi but have been around a bunch of 1.8T GTI's as well. Nothing is swapped around as far as the way the turbo, innercooler and charge piping works. But again not sure of the question...
You are looking at an aftermarket setup vs later platform OEM, and why does it matter? VW did what they did with the reasoning they saw fit. The chassis changed, so the bay is also different in ways. Maybe hit up the mk5 era engineers, as they made the decision. All anyone who wasn't involved in the design can do, is speculate.
It's mostly because of our fuel, however the IC and heat is becoming a problem which will make it worse as ambient temp goes up. As for what specifically the ECU's are different and sometimes it takes a different combination of things to be switched on and off for me to be able to tune it the way I'm most comfortable with. Unfortunately it varies a lot between ECU's even in MK4's so it's not a straight forward answer.
I'm tuned through a custom tuner through Eurodyne Maestro. I have been using Eurodyne Maestro with my custom tuner for 4 years now, and have had zero issues. Before this, I was using OTS tunes from Eurodyne, and I had two turbos fail on those OTS tunes. I purchased the Eurodyne software back in 2017, for $700. They did not have the Powertap Air Flash device then, so every time I need to switch tunes, or log, I have to use my laptop. That is the only thing that sucks about this, in comparison to the COBB AP. I have the ability to purchase the Powertap Air Flash device, but it is $250, which kind of sucks, given those who purchase Eurodyne tunes now, get the Powertap Air Flash device free with their tunes, which are cheaper now too. I really think that those of us who have been with Eurodyne long before the flash device was out, should get a discount on it.
It's the way of technology. Just because you bought a new iphone a month before the newest iphone came out doesn't entitle you to the newest version for free. It's just the way it is, tech constantly changes. However I do understand it sucks sometimes.
I have a 1.8t bam 225. It needs more im after 300-400hp safe power. Looking for best mods to save money but not skimp out on what is needed to make it safe
In your opinion, what is the best size turbo for a 1.8T? We all know the little factory turbo is a rocket off the line and huge turbos can make big power but what is the best balance of the two?
@@COMotorsports In my experience with my 1.8T i ran the stock turbo, a GT2868, GT2871, and a GT2876. A friend of mine also had a Audi TT with a GT30something. I noticed with my 2868 that it spooled really fast but baked the tires every time that you laid into it but lacked some high RPM power. The 2871 and 2876 make good top end power but it feels like it takes awhile to build boost. The TT took even longer to make boost. My car made 280whp on the 2868, 350whp 320tq with the 2871/76 all at about 20-21psi with a Unitronic GT28 tune, 630cc injectors, and a cast manifold. My friends TT was 420whp. I was just wondering what your ideal street turbo setup would be for the 1.8T. It is not fun burning the tires off with huge low end power but it also sucks waiting for boost to kick in at 4500 RPM. I figured you would have a favorite in between turbo size that is fun on the street but makes respectable power still.
Would you guys be able to do a “setup” list? MAFless? Still have a mass sensor on the inter cooler? N75 valve? Size wastegate? What size injectors you reconmend? Stock fuel rail? I’m wanting a gt30 set up just like this I’ve got a built bottom end awp 20th anniversary GTI
I mean the video tells a lot. It's clearly mafless, it's on stock fuel rail, it has an aftermarket boost controller so n75 is not used. Injectors are based on what tune you plan on running, or if you plan on running E then you need to size accordingly.
@@COMotorsports thank your for the reply! Still doing research on this I had my motor built and have been looking into different set ups! There’s so many different things people do on these platforms I’m still really new with it!

@@El_Jefe_S3 because stock makes about 200whp all in on our pump gas. So another 100-150whp is pretty damn good if you ask me. In the end it all comes down to what people want and can afford.
Hello really good video nice car When will you talk about the different turbo setups And what's ideal for 1.8t engines , g25, gtx, k04 turbo chargers and their manifolds Because there is alot of options in the market right now
@@COMotorsports thanks for the reply I meant like also including the other varies turbo chargers and their manifolds you guys said in other video that you were gonna talk about it but never did 😥😅
@@COMotorsportsYour answer is a big light in the dark.. golf 6r stands on K04-064.. 270hp at 1.2bar boost. It can be pushed to 310-320hp at 1.4bar boost with 1.8 20v on bigger fuel supply. Just u teach it. A quicker spooler than garrett gt2860rs.. Not first time u say K04 is waiste of time with 1.8T. Can u explain widely cause I'd really like to build fast road 1.8 20v with bigger turbo on stock ecu.. 1000 thanks for your wise reply 🤗
I assume that with a standalone ECU, troubleshooting the issues and tuning would have taken a fraction of the time. I'm all about using the stock hardware but the 20+ year old tech is showing its age and the BS checksum and flash times of the stock ecu is a time consuming process. I have looked into doing it myself with WINOLS but im turned off by the complexity of the maps and figuring out what does what and having to translate from German to English is just a PITA. I'm definitely going standalone when I'm ready to push for more HP. The initial higher price tag of the standalone will pay for itself when its time to get it properly tuned.
I use Eurodyne Maestro to tune my 1.8T A4. It was tricky at first but they made it pretty simple. The maps are pretty well defined, although some are not. I'm by no strech a tuner but I took a mostly stock car and it now runs a bigger turbo, E85 and methanol injection. Never been on a dyno but appears to make about 300whp and torque to match.
I own a 2002 Turbo S Beetle. I need a "receipe" for 300 wherl H.P. I've been told I can get there with stock rods/pistons. They claimed the stock fuel pump would get there as well. Ill replace whatever is necessary but I see no need for anything past 300. Please give me some input to solve my need for 300 wheel H.P. I wish you were in the states, I'd definitely be using your services. I live in Nashville Tn and normally run Exxon 93 octane in my Bug. Thanks for any input you could share with me. Is any of this information factual? What cc injecter do I need with what turbo do I need to get to 300 wheel H.P.
I have a 87 cabriolet with just a 95 hp 1.8. What budget engine swap would you suggest for a daily driver? I would love to get about 300hp if affordable. thanks
I know, that this can be a stupid question :P but are we speaking here about oem garrett gtx3071 or gtx3071 without brand behind? Asking cause a friend of mine is literally right before starting his setup up with "turboworks" gtx3071 and I'm curious can we compare those setups
We use true Garrett most of the time. This one is a pulsar brand knock off. These are not your typical trash knockoff, we've been having good luck with them however longevity is still in question. Where a true Garrett shines is long-term reliability.
@@COMotorsports dope, thx for the answer. I know pulsars, good Australian product. Well known in drifting scene. So we will test how chineese chicken will perform.🙃 Could you say us how much timing it ate safely on 91? I will be tuning ours on european 98 so US 93

my 20v mk1 still running stock ko3 turbo, is 1bar or 20psi fine or too much? its just a daily driver not track or race car, ps rev limiter is set to like 6500rpm
Guys, what's better for stock displacement 1.8t? Have a dillema between gen2 gtx 3071 and 3076, from pulsar. Do you know what's the rpm difference with spool? Aiming for +/- 500 crank hp :) Greetings!
It comes down to what the cars used for, what fuel is being used, if it's fwd or AWD and a handful of other things on what I'd recommend. In short, either turbo is capable of doing it.
Stoked to see a 337 on the channel! Thing looks similar to mine. Jealous of the turbo setup lol. Clean set up just needs rods. Sweet vid very informative thank you. Great numbers for stock block, is this a Gen 2 GTX ?
Each ECU is different so some require a combination of things to be switched on and off to make things work the way I specifically want to tune it. So not really straight forward answer unfortunately.
@@COMotorsports I'm familiar with the Bosch me7.x series of ECUs enough to not need Eurodyne. ..just wondering what you changed is all. Thanks. Also wondering what timing was before you were getting corrections for knock. I think you mentioned the fuel being 91 octane up there in Canada. I can get 93 here in FL @ around sea level. ..Kinda wondering what the differences are with that also. like how much timing you had to pull back because of those limitations of fuel and altitude and what you ended up setting it at to finish the dyno sesh. like even show the maps and the changes you make, it would much more interesting to me atleast, if you went into more detail when you are tuning on the dyno and making the vids and all. you're doin alright tho because I still want to watch your vids. I lose focus on boring vids so...
I have an ITS T3T4 50 trim with a .48 hotside that I'm thinking about using it on my stock 1.8t. Roughly how would you think this would perform? I'm thinking it'll spool pretty fast and still support 400whp when really pushed.
I would be happy with 300whp. I was just saying it could do around 400whp when pushed to 30psi or so on high octane e85 or race gas How do you think the spool would be on this turbo, I was hoping with the .48 it woukd spool pretty quick

Was going into eurodyne but as of now it seems like their website is down
Awesome video!! Thanks for the shoutout!!
No thank you.
@@COMotorsports what’s the max power you’ve seen with a GTX3071?
@@DustySteel Unfortunately, no ones ever let me push one. lol I'd say it would make around 600whp tapped out.
@@COMotorsports that’s understandable lol. I need to save for a bit to get a turbo setup from you guys but I’m super excited. Going to get some merch soon too!
Love your work! Im still wondering if the postage section on your website is working properly yet, i want to purchase some shirts in Australia.
We've been having intermittent email issues that have been plaguing us, some people receive our emails some don't. We believe we've got those issues resolved this weekend by changing servers. We'll reach out to you within the next day or two. Sorry for the delay.
@@COMotorsports excellent thankyou, I replied by email a while back but never heard back. Thanks for the help Dave.
Stock bottom end problems. Cant send it like one should. This always has me asking, why even bother going bigger turbo?
@@El_Jefe_S3 because stock makes about 200whp all in on our pump gas. So another 100-150whp is pretty damn good if you ask me. In the end it all comes down to what people want and can afford.
Hello really good video nice car
When will you talk about the different turbo setups And what's ideal for 1.8t engines , g25, gtx, k04 turbo chargers and their manifolds
Because there is alot of options in the market right now
K04 are a waste on 18t IMO

1000 thanks for your wise reply 🤗
good score , how many KM have the car or the stock engine ?
Wasn't the original engine I don't believe.
I had a vr6 that looked just like that
I assume that with a standalone ECU, troubleshooting the issues and tuning would have taken a fraction of the time.
The issue is, what you've learned on one ECU with Maestro can be completely different on the next ECU.
Yes changes, trouble shooting, boost control and plenty of other things make it the right choice.
@@COMotorsports I started with hptuners, it has a huge difference going to Eurodyne!
Oouuuu I have a 337 it’s so niceeee
Nice only if you guys could remote tune looking for a e85 blend tune or something like it in florida so fuel is not an issue lol
Maestro? what fuel? mods list?
Diverter or Blow off?
Hi , i have a question witch ignition coil’s are better from VW Audi R8 Orginal or NGK Red one’s
Moot point. Both work fine
I have a 87 cabriolet with just a 95 hp 1.8. What budget engine swap would you suggest for a daily driver? I would love to get about 300hp if affordable. thanks
100% 1.8t in that case. Relatively easy swap, endless support for it, and stock engine can take 300whp.
I will be tuning ours on european 98 so US 93
@@FaworDrifts Too many factors to say, every setup is different. We listen to what the dyno and logs tell us for each setup.
@@COMotorsports I been running a pulsar g30 660 for over a year now at 30+ psi not bad turbos for the price
I just got my b6 avant tuned 1000cc injectors holset hx35 only at 25 psi boost how much do you think i can make in 1/4 mille? Any idea just guess on whp in my car no many dynos where i live
That's a heavy car, I wouldn't expect much for ET honestly.
The silver GTI owner was stretchin' those tires to stupid levels lmao.
my 20v mk1 still running stock ko3 turbo, is 1bar or 20psi fine or too much? its just a daily driver not track or race car, ps rev limiter is set to like 6500rpm
1 bar is 14.5psi...which is totally fine. 20psi that turbo basically running out of steam around there so not much gains after that.
@@COMotorsports b6 chassis with quattro, 98 octane fuel. Used for street, weekend toy :)
Stoked to see a 337 on the channel! Thing looks similar to mine. Jealous of the turbo setup lol. Clean set up just needs rods. Sweet vid very informative thank you. Great numbers for stock block, is this a Gen 2 GTX ?
Yes, well Pulsar version.
Please do a b5/b5.5 1.8t passat, dyno it till it blows up these cars never get the attention they should
A 1.8t is a 1.8t, chassis is irrelevant.
Is the automatics in these cars pretty bad or?
Pretty bad yes
Let’s go
what change specifically did you make to fix the initial issue?
What do you think that could do in the 1/4 how it sits?
With these tires, slow. lol

Yes, Precision 39mm.

No idea, but not good and too small.
what rims are those ? 🤍
Rotiform something or others.
What fuel pump is he using?
DW in tank.
fugly tyre wheel combo, but thanks for the vid!
Need to put some real tires on those wheels
I have an ITS T3T4 50 trim with a .48 hotside that I'm thinking about using it on my stock 1.8t. Roughly how would you think this would perform? I'm thinking it'll spool pretty fast and still support 400whp when really pushed.
I don't think you're seeing 400whp on that turbo. 300whp is a more realistic goal.
I would be happy with 300whp. I was just saying it could do around 400whp when pushed to 30psi or so on high octane e85 or race gas
How do you think the spool would be on this turbo, I was hoping with the .48 it woukd spool pretty quick
@@williamrouse3033 AR too small IMO.
It could make 1000 hp and those wheels would still be gay AF
Thanks!
