#34 - Clearing the Land Before Fire Season & Removing Floors in the House

- As summer approaches, the land has to take priority as we get ready for the looming fire season. We're so lucky to have this land but it can feel a bit of a liability as you try to meet the deadline for having your land cleared. But, thankfully, the weather is on our side with some cloudy days! And on the days it is too warm, Michael heads inside to carry on removing floors and old beams to fit new joists.
About Us 🏚️👫🏼🐈🐕🐕
We're Michael & Becci (the humans) and Tilly (sassy English tortoiseshell cat), Alfie and Anoushka (Portuguese rescue dogs). After four years in Portugal and numerous dreams about renovating our own property, we've taken the plunge and are renovating a schist stone house and its outbuildings in Figueiró dos Vinhos. We're doing most of the work ourselves (or... Michael is!) and we'll be stepping back in time to create a character property with as many original features and antiques as possible.
Join us for the journey and don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! We love hearing from you 💛

Your understanding and appreciation of how his ald shell works is a godsend for the build. It’s taking ages which it will, especially as you’re doing an extremely careful and considered reconstruction and renovation
Thanks so much 😊 that's what it's all about for us!
The speeded routines with ambient speed music was ace! Kudos editörü!
Thanking you!! 💛
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work on the house and hill side 👍😁💪👌👏👏👏.
Thanks so much as always 🥰💛 have a lovely weekend!!! 😘
Stunning bit of landscaping/fire prevention. It looks ace 😊
Thank you 💛
Congratulations! This is one of the best vlogs about remodeling old houses in Portugal. The immense work you have done is visible, but it is looking fantastic. Continue with your strength and enthusiasm because with your chemistry as a couple this will be a fantastic place to live in the coming years. And congratulations also for cleaning the land, essential for the fire season. Now a suggestion. Replace the wooden roof beams with cement beams. The sparks from the fires always ignite this area initially.
Ah, what a lovely thing to say! Thank you so much 😊 we absolutely love it here. Thanks again 💛
Wow that’s another productive week!! So much hard work. It’s looking great! 👏
Thanks so much 💛💛
great. invest in olive trees that are called green gold! hugs
🫒 We have quite a few so need to try and give them a good prune next winter! Just about to try the last harvest! 😋
Good job 💪😅👏
Thank you ☺️
Well done progressing well.
Thanks so much ☺️
Lots of hard work this week, well done to both of you
Thanks so much 💛
As much as it's nice to preserve the history, I'm glad you've chosen to replace all those joists with modern material...it will be safer, last longer and provide better support for whatever your interior plans are. While you have everything open, I'll suggest you do additional treatment for insects on that new structure, especially before you close up the wall pockets for best long term results.
Exactly ☺️ we will definitely treat and make them look a little less "new"! Thank you.
Damm protect your eyes you have only 2!
Incredible achievement and such hard workers. ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
You are doing a great job, Michael. Congratulations. God bless you.
Thank you so much 🙏🏼
I can feel the house breathing a sigh of relief. Nothing like a strong foundation for all the work to come. Well done.
Those fabulous yards always come with alot of work but what a way to stay fit....you sleep better and the beer tastes better👍

Thanks so much 💛🍻 you're so right! Have a lovely weekend 💛🇵🇹
Nice work with joist but wood its not cheap,,I would go with ciment joist for life lol
😅 thank you!!
Искам да съм с вас на сянката с биричка! Много красиво място!
That would be lovely!! 🍻
Brave man! I'm so in awe!
Me (Becci) too! Thanks so much ☺️
God bless you both 🙏🙏🙏
Muito obrigado pelas suas amáveis palavras. Adoramos ouvi-los todas as semanas. O apoio de nossos amigos aqui nos mantém em movimento 💛 Bom fim de semana 🙏🏼🥰
Please use safety equipment!
Why can’t you brainwashed people mind your own business.😡
I don't know if the gum trees we see in the background are on your land, but if they are, you'd be well-advised to cut them down. Every Australian tree is ecologically designed to burn - gums, wattles, blackwoods - they are all renewed through fire, and once things get hot enough, the pines explode like hand grenades. It seems half of Portugal is infested with gums and mimosa. Little wonder there is such a high fire risk. Send the bill to the Aussies!
I'm afraid they are!! They cause a lot of problems every year 😞 we do have a few native trees growing so the plan is to encourage these to grow instead 😊
Gloves and safety equipment, my friend!
… and all that trimming is nice but not helping if you don’t burn your wood and leaf piles.
👍🫖🍌😁
👋🏼💛
Always love your content! I noticed the ruin two houses down from you - any chance you’d tell me your village name or general area? I’m loving the valley itself and those terraces across the way from you.
Thanks so much ☺️ we're actually hoping to buy that...! Happy to share our area though as there are quite a few ruins/projects around here! Have you got Facebook or Instagram?
More work less chat
Could you burn off all that debris
❤
👋🏼💛
