Vintage Story Desert Life Ep 1: Welcome to the... Jungle? What?!?

- Vintage Story Desert Life is a desert-themed survival playthough in version 1.19, with a large list of mods to speed up the process of building and chiseling. While our builds will all (or at least mostly) be in the desert, we are not restricted to hot and arid climates for the purposes of gathering materials and resources.
This series exists as a series of VODs, as well, but for people who prefer their videos in a more manageable length, the VODs will be cut into these shorter episodes and released throughout the week after each livestream, provided that there is enough desire for this format.
Want to play along? You'll need the world files and all of these mods (likely) in order for it to work. Download links below.

I enjoy long and short formats. Long format doesn't miss anything and I can download and watch anywhere. Short format then allows me to watch it twice. But do what St. Algorithmus likes best. Sorry I missed the live stream!
Thanks for the feedback, Rivi! The short format should also not miss anything except the pre-stream chat, which is mostly just me welcoming folks to the chat. Hope to see you in a future livestream! :)
>desert life
>look inside
>jungle life
Hahaha yeah the spawn point is in the jungle, so... Yep that happened!
Congrats on the 10k! I don't mind longer episodes, but the algorithm seems to prefer 15-25 minute length.
Thank you! As for episode length, I've personally found that anywhere from 25-45 minutes is the sweet spot SPECIFICALLY for Vintage Story videos. Shorter and longer videos seem to suffer, though it could also be other reasons. Who knows? I just blindly worship the almighty algorithm! ;P
i had no wifi for a month. i have been looking forward to these videos!!! time to binge watch them all!!!!
Oh wow, that's rough! Welcome back to the Internet! Hope you enjoy the series!
I'm a fan of having both the VoD and shorter videos available. I'm the kind of person that leaves a stream on in the background while doing menial/repetitive tasks in games, but if I want to actively watch something it has to be in chunks
Haha you and I think alike in that way, then!
i like either or. either way if I miss anything live I can go back and watch no biggie. You do what you enjoy and what is more lucrative for you and your channel. Happy exploring
Thanks for the feedback! Check out the poll over on the community tab if you haven't voted yet. I don't mind cutting these up and adding intros and outros--it's a relatively light workload compared to editing entire videos like I do for the Guide series.
I am enjoying your enthusiasm. I can hear the excitement and enjoyment in your voice. I am partial to the 45 minutes to hour long video. I will watch the longer ones, but they are harder to fit into one viewing. But, hey, whatever floats the youtube boat.
I think I'll probably continue with both options in the future, so everyone has a choice. The folks who want to see the whole thing at once can watch the VOD, and people who prefer smaller bites can watch the episodes (which are probably a little higher video quality, too).
just to note. there's a mechanics in the game allowing you to stay alive almost hungry with one limitation: no regenerating hp. once you are hungry - eat exactly one grain of any kind. these 30/60 satiation point will last for hors if not days. then - once you are hungry again - eat another grain. very low food consumption, but great for starting.
Thanks for the tip!
How funny, I recently made a world in the boreal forests near the arctic, quite a contrast here I guess hahaha
Nice! Cold climates make for a wild challenge in Vintage Story!
It took me so long to find your channel again. Glad i did. I bought VS and will finally get to dive in Saturday.
I still got half of guide part 2 Playlist to catch up on.
That's great to hear! I hope you enjoy the game!
I found your angry bees, and now I'm here. It's nice when the algorithm feeds me good content.
Hey that's awesome! Hope you enjoy Desert Life! :)
Its funny to hear you mention Rhad as a streamer. I have been a sub of his going on 4 years. Crazy how worlds colide sometimes lol
I think what's even crazier is when they DON'T collide... Like, TH-cam KNOWS I consume a lot of Vintage Story content, among other games and topics. Yet there are relatively popular creators with VS videos they are years old, yet they've never been recommended to me! @.@
it was incredibly fun to watch your stream while i could! love to watch on my free time so thanks for makin my days a lil better dude!
Thanks for coming to the stream! Hope to see you in a future one, too! :)
I already watched the VOD twice!
I will probably just watch this once...
Oh wow!
@@Kurazarrh Well, to be fair...I started watching it about an hour before bed. I woke up about 3 hours after it was done and watched it again. I definitely need to watch the last part(s) again...
I think I like the old format better but I can imagine actually interacting with members would be a nice change of pace for you. I personally don't have enough spare time to watch a long live stream and even though I am really grateful you took the time to brake it up into smaller segments, it just doesn't flow the same to me. It feels kinda distracting when you are talking to people that I can't see and it seems you are distracted trying to play and watch too many things at once. I do get the appeal though for people that like to interact with content creators and hear a response right away, it is human nature after all. In the end, you do you and I will continue to watch but since you asked for opinions, I do enjoy the older format better. :)
Hey, thanks for the feedback! I definitely understand the preference for the format I've been using in the Guide series, and I do have plans for another Guide series that will not be livestreamed, so at some point in the future, you'll 100% be getting your wish! For this series, the overwhelming majority seems to be in favor of the livestream format, so I'll probably give it a go for this series before transitioning back to the "traditional" style, and possibly livestream some other games instead.
Yeah seconded, the interactions with the community kinda break immersion for me and kinda go against the vibe of vintage story but that's just me I guess? Anyways wholeheartedly agree with you on every point
legend, i got so wrapped up in work and life i haven’t played vintage story in some time, super excited to update from 1.18 to the newest version and get back to surviving!
Hey, welcome back! :D Hope you enjoy the series!
I didn't have time to watch the full stream so thanks for the condensed version!
Glad you could still catch it! This won't be condensed so much as "cut up and delivered at a more watchable pace." Hope you enjoy!
I'm partial to long formats as I can sew a costume whislt watching, BUT, short episodes are handy when I'm watching with my 4yr old grandaughter ( who really can't focus for more than 30 mins)
CONGRATULATIONS on hitting 10k
:D Thank you so much! We're getting close to hitting 11k now! I'm glad you're finding a format that works for you and your granddaughter! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
This Format is realy good. Keep on making these Videos
Thank you! Will do! :)
Yes! Looking forward to a whole new season full of "oh, queso" moments 🎉
Indeed! Quesadilly, yo! :P
Everyone seems to forget that, as long as your torch is in a dry location, you can light a torch with just the fire starter and then light all other torches with the first torch....
I like this short format.
Great! Thanks for the feedback!
What an interesting first episode of the new series. It's really different to watch this bite-sized VODs compared to your usual video style. TBH I miss the BGM a lot. As someone who almost never watch streams or VODs, I'd say Rhadamant's approach of converting long hours of streams into 30-40 minutes of videos might fit your playstyle and videostyle quite nicely. But I only know the viewers side. I don't know how difficult it is to chop up VODs into multiple videos from the creator's side.
Anyways, I'll be sure to follow this new series and look forward to how you'll manage to insert 20Kuestions into this new format. It'll be hilarious if brown pants were to happen mid-Kuestion.
Hey thanks! By the by, there should still be background music in the videos. If it's too quiet to hear, I can change up the filters on the final renders a bit to bring that sound track up.
I prefer the smaller segments. Makes it a lot easier to navigate to find certain sections. And I will be honest, I don't have the attention span, or time, to watch more than half an hour at a time.
Hey perfect, you're in luck! Plenty of folks seen to prefer it in smaller pieces, so I'm offering both options going forward!
Great vid... rakoona was likely puking when you picked up soybeans.. lol
Hahaha yeah he probably was!!
I don't think you need Terra Preta Particles mod as in 1.19 TP no longer spawns in the wild but rather High Fertility Soil spawns in its place and TP is now craftable.
Also I know it adds a bit more to the game and is a tad less vanilla but have you ever checked out Primitive Survival mod? It adds a bunch of fishing stuff as well as Log Hollows (small storage, can chop it down to obtain) which are perfect for early game storage and as a carryon backpack. It also adds a little kick paddling raft that's amazing, as well as a bunch of other really neat features to round out some vanilla features. Things like Bush meat + knife makes Bush meat jerky that auto cures in your inventory and even a smoker that makes Bush meat last like 45 days in a storage vessel in a cellar. There's even a copper tree tap that can be crafted with a bucket to make a resin taping kit that collects up to 6 resin over time every couple days, far more than pure vanilla and it makes more sense than 8 days (90%of a season). It's great fun and still feels kinda vanilla but fleshes out those niche spots that are currently not important or being neglected in favor of other stuff for updates.
Ooooh also also... there's a "custom server mod", moon something tweaks, I can't remember it's name off hand. It adds dynamic stairs and a few other dynamic blocks, think "other block game"s stairs and how they change shape based on how they are placed with other stairs, super awesome! Oh but the thing that caught my eye and made me check out the mod is... Bulk Nails and Strips Mold, it takes 300 units and makes a bunch more strips than the vanilla smithing or the other nails and strips mold mod... I'm pretty sure it's balanced but just saves time.
The Terra Preta mod was updated to show particles on high fertility soil, so the mod still has a purpose--and since you can use HF soil to double your TP output, it's handy to have.
As for Primitive Survival, I've looked at it and played on a server with it, but I think it adds too many easy ways of acquiring and preserving food that, while realistic, removes a lot of the survival struggle that I enjoy. We also have PLENTY of free loot from the Better Ruins mod, so the free AND respawning loot from the log hollows would just put it over the top! lol
Seems really promising!
Thanks! I've put a poll up for people to indicate whether they like these shorter videos or prefer watching the whole VOD. Check out the community tab and vote to let me know if you have a preference! :)
I got so excited, and then realized I already watch the whole thing when it was streamed originally. :(
Hey, sorry for the fake-out. I did mention during the livestream/VOD that I would be putting these episodes out for people who prefer to have them chopped up. I get a lot of comments from parents with kids who've built up a routine of "get home, do homework, and watch a Kurazarrh video before dinner" kind of thing, and being a parent myself, I 100% get the desire to have a reasonable-length video that ends, rather than having to pause a longer video in the middle of play.
@@Kurazarrh NP. Ijust put the chopped version on in the background so you could still get views. Keep up the awesome work.
I like 40-45 minutes of VS at a time.
Thanks for the feedback!
New update had drifters spawning in my fenced in base with lantern and torches lit all around. Game was trying to kill me
That will happen if there is a rift nearby. Light will prevent rifts from spawning, but once a rift spawns, player-placed light has no effect on where the rift can spawn drifters, and it can do so within a roughly 25-block radius! So you'll need a LOT more lanterns to keep drifters out!
I was wondering how you were going to do that. I caught a few moments of the stream and was wondering if this was separate from the normal YT. A concurrent series type of thing...
I don't mind the stream format, it doesn't allow for timeskips, but still cool nonetheless (do prefer normal yt format myself). The only person thing i would advise you don't do (personal pref) is add steam elements, showing chat, or other pop ups on the screen
Thanks for the input! The episodes are for the portion of folks who want their Vintage Story in smaller bites. I also would rather watch a few 45-minute episodes rather than one long VOD; it's nice to have a known break point, and a lot of folks with kids or busy lives have expressed a similar desire, so they can have a "Kurazarrh episode" between school and dinner, for example. This series isn't meant for folks who would rather watch the VOD, which is still up over in the Live tab.
As for overlays and such--not to worry. I dislike them myself. People who want to see the chat replay can watch the full VOD.
@@Kurazarrh Breaking down the VOD is helpful for those that can't really sit for 3, 4 or 5 hours, like Rhadamant does it (I chuckled when you mentioned him as I watch a lot of his content, I saw you briefly pop up on chat on one of his Twitch stream a few weeks ago). [funny thing, he introduced me to VS and I went looking for YT type episodes as a result and found your channel from there]
3hs its a bit too much for me but 1h long videos I would watch no problem. Cant wait to see what you'll build (and chisel) this time!
Perfect, thanks for the feedback!
Hey Kurazarrh!
Maybe you have already answered this question, but why do you not want to try play with Rustbound Magic mod for VS?
This series is about building and survival, not a "let's explore every large mod it there" kind of thing.
I don't see any fish here ... fish appears to the left. Cheater. 😂
Kurrazarh, the master of meteorites. I found one in hundreds of hours and lots of digging. I think they hate me.
But I don't care. I can do without the iron of the stars. I take what I find, no need to search for hours. It's wasted time. Growing and building is much more important.
Looking forward to a new story, I enjoyed this first episode a lot. ❤
Thank you! Haha, it seems I still didn't notice the fish. Streamer tunnel-vision and all that!!
Meteoric iron is kind of like TLs--they're everywhere. You just need to look for them. Luckily, on flat terrain (especially with color-accurate map turned on), they're pretty easy to spot.
@@Kurazarrh The fish is a salmon, by the way. A climbing firefish. 🤣
depending on how well the channel grows in the future, you could consider making the streams as channel membership perk, then making the vods with those (40-50 mins is fine). you could also edit builds into smaller vids to upload as shorts (like a 1 min guide on a farmhouse or coop). but whatever you decide to do ill probably still watch XD (except the shorts tbh i never watch shorts).
:) Thanks for the idea!
This is not edited, right? All things included, no time lapse or things?
That's correct! :)
Ok, don't have the time to watch it then. But good to see content of the game anyway.
Have fun
oh shit, 1440p??? did you recently start recording in 1440p or am I blind
Haha, I started recording in 1440p about halfway through the second season of the Vintage Story Guide. Mostly out of necessity--bought a new laptop with a 1440p screen. Which is great, though my SSD doesn't like storing all the extra video data! XD
I see what you did with that river quote )
XD You're the first! I love that theme, by the way. I hum it all the time.
Cant wait to see what shenanigans you get up to in this series. I prefer the more edited, shorter videos, but thats just me.
I'm looking forward to building with a LOT of sandstone!! :D And thanks for your feedback! The episodes from the VOD aren't going to be edited, mostly because it has a lot of running commentary with only 10-second pauses or so between thoughts, for the most part. I didn't feel like those were worth editing out, as it would only shorten each video by a couple minutes total, unless I started cutting out more of the meat.
@@Kurazarrh yeah, I get it. No worries. Sorry I missed the stream. Maybe next time.
I honestly won’t watch the livestream, I don’t really have time during the mid-day (work) to watch the whole stretch and I don’t enjoy listening to the chat replies.
You mentioned Rhadamant, and I watched him too. But again, watching old streams is just disjointed and I gave it a try. I stopped mainly because he started berating people in a few videos/livestreams and I really didn’t like that drama.
I guess I like/prefer the guide series and hope that format isn’t gone.
Not saying it’s right or wrong, I just don’t prefer livestreams. I know this becomes a business for people as well, so if this works for you then it is what it is.
Yours is one of the few channels I looked forward to releases for.
Hey thanks for the feedback! The previous format isn't gone, but for this series I'm reacting to what people want and are excited for. Totally understandable if it's not the format for you, and I'm a little shocked to hear that about Rhad. I must not have watched those videos because he seems pretty chill.
if you asked me to find it, I probably couldn’t because it was years ago, but it definitely was a Rimworld video.
I think he was fed up with criticism, but it just struck a wrong chord with me, and it kind of kept coming up each video.
I don’t blame anyone for doing their thing and it’s not exactly easy to do all this and try and make it more than a hobby.
Either way, i hope it all goes well for you regardless of how you go about it, and you gotta do what’s best for you. I just wanted to leave some feedback, that I hope wasn’t blaming or shaming.
Thanks for responding and listening, regardless!
Hmm....I'm pondering....I think there's not a lot of difference between the stream in one chunk, or youtube videos that are just pieced out from the stream. I think, I would prefer a youtube video in the 25-40 minute length. [closer to 25, maybe...] and have a lot of filler chopped out. though i don't know how long that takes to edit from a stream. so a 3 hour stream might end up with enough content for... i dunno. 2 30ish minute videos?
what would the plausability of that be? how similar is that to your normal video making process? as far as streams go, you did really well for your first one! you leveraged your voiceover experience quite well, to keep the soundwaves open, and not rely on smoothbrain wordvomit. [I've seen some streamers who basically narrate their actions, just "ok, let's open this container, ok it's got x y x which is pretty good. and over here there's a this thing,...blah blah bhlah." you can imagine how WORTHLESS that "wordvomit is" because I CAN LITERALLY SEE THE SAME THING AND MAKE MY OWN CONCLUSIONS about what you're picking out of the trash loot container!!
ahem.
Lol at your description of folks narrating what they do! As for the (lack of) difference, that's kind of the point. It's for folks like me who enjoy the videos but other to have an end to each video in sight, rather than an intimidating, massive video.
@@Kurazarrh that's fair, I"d be curious to hear your feedback on what the majority of people think of this avenue, and what other youtubers have said on the matter.
@@TizonaAmanthia Well, the poll is currently at 36% "shorter," 21% "VOD" and 42% "either way," with 440 votes. I've gotten a lot more comments extolling the virtues of shorter videos, so I'll probably continue chopping these up for folks who like that format.
what is the challenge living in a desert vs living on a artic?
Both places are generally difficult to find food, but deserts are a little more generous, since the cacti can have fruit, and gazelles and hyenas provide plenty of meat.
Arctic/antarctic areas are kind of ... not really ready for regular play outside of extreme challenge. It's MUCH more difficult to survive, since you won't overheat in the desert, but you can certainly freeze in the arctic. Growing crops is much more difficult in cold weather than hot, unless you enable underground farming (which makes cold survival kind of a cinch then).
The "challenge" in this series is less of a survival one and more of a thematic one! ;)
15:15 oh, doesn't it require system performance similar to Minecraft?
@@thesage1096 If you want to play with all the pretty visuals, yes. But it's designed to run on a potato if you turn down the settings.
how do you make the character face follow the camera in the F5 F5 camera mode?
In chat, type ".clientconfigcreate overheadLookAt bool true" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Then exit and reload the world, and it'll be done! :)
@@Kurazarrh thank you
Have long form videos, but make some shorts clips to entice people. Just make sure you turn of notifications for shorts.
Good idea! Thanks for the tip!
how do you make time go slower
If you just want time to physically pass slower, you can do a "/time speed n" command (replace "n" with a number less than 60; set to 60 for normal speed). But that affects everything, including how fast particles decay and so on. If you want to have longer days, months, or years, you'll need to take a look at the Vintage Story wiki, as those are commands I've never tinkered with.
Of it's ok to ask I'm curious what is your computers specs? And the settings you use on OBS to record?
I've got an Acer Nitro 5 AN-515-46, so it's got an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, 16GB RAM, and an Nvidia RTX 3070 TI mobile GPU. As for OBS... I just record at native resolution (2560x1440) and use the Nvidia HEVC encoder at CQ 16, P5 preset, Good quality, single-pass, main profile.
@@Kurazarrh by coincidence I have the nitro 5 too! I7 rtx 3050 wow damb
What?
Wasn't me! I didn't say anything! :P
