    Talking to the traders reveals that there are hidden villages where most of their people reside. Also, in the Resonance Archive, we learnt that the archive saved everything about the old civilization in a giant recording device. We also learn that an “old alchemist” is inviting us to come and find him. Is he perhaps Jonas Falx himself? Somehow still alive after these thousands of years, still trying to figure out how to repair the mistake he made?

    This lore is very similar to the Don't Starve lore. Ancient civilization went to the caves and found powerful material - Nightmare Fuel. They built "Gateway" to the other realm to get more of that fuel, but this realm leaked into the world and consumed entire civilization. They turned into Nightmare Creatures and they are very similar to drifters. After all, devs themselves said that they were inspired by the Don't Starve.

    I believe the seraphs are the result of humans being changed (likely on purpose as an experiment by Jonas Falx to stem the tide of the rot) by the same energy that powers temporal gears. Somehow this may have made them immune to the rot, since the player can eat rotten food (for now) with no ill effects. This also may have made them naturally temporally unstable to a degree as human merchants that can be found in unstable areas don't seem to go crazy. This also explains how the player suddenly appears after thousands of years and does so again upon death, where their body likely reverts to a pre-death state at the last place they had anchored their temporal essence.

    There's a few mis-spoken things in the Videos, Rift and drifters can appear anywhere, not just low stabile regions. Low stability makes it more common ( like going far underground, assuming you are getting closer to the lens. ) , but drifters spawn where it's dark. Anywhere it's dark.
    I believe drifters were humans swallowed up by the rust world , those that escaped the rot , but trapped in the alternate dimension , ruined their minds and bodies, or perhaps some eldrich horror made em that way to suffer.
    Seraph is not Seraphim btw. Maybe has some sort of relation, but more likely just a term that closely resembles each other, describing another " other worldly being ".
    The statement " returned" just means these peoples were there before. Its possible they raised from death, somehow , but none of the text pointed to any of those characters in the books being Seraph. Its entirely possible, Seraphs have their own dimension they dwell in, when on this world, are put into a more physical form.
    The "Other world" or Rust realm as we know it, would be the one side of the scale. It reminds me a lot of the rusty-hell-like scenes from Silent Hill.
    A total alien and incomprehensible realm, of what humans would find, inhospitable ... or in other worlds, hellish. ( complete with very bad things, that seem to hate you.) That's One side of the scales.
    The "world" would be the center point , or the balancing point. We can safely say, it's not earth. Just earth like.
    Also, technology seemed to peak at around late 14th century according to lore found, but the introduction to the pseudo-magic, pseudo-science Falx spear headed, would have altered technological progress. We can see , some of it even became religious by examining the ruins. The time of Rot and going underground , also contributed most likely to a "stall" in industry and natural progression. what Falx made, this lens .. his experiments, tipped the scales towards the Rust realm.
    Now, it's just me assuming , but to "balance the scales" and explain Seraphs , there has to be another "world" one more positive , also alien to Human understanding. More or less, "the good side" , and for countless amounts of time, the balance was either so normal, neither Rust realm, or where Seraphs are from, could effect it. Or, later teh balance tipped so far to rust realm, was impossible for Seraph's side to "return".
    As the Prime world , recovered and rejuvenated, the balance tipped back just enough for Serpahs to start slowly re-entering , assumingly to basically help rebuild it.
    In Our Myths of earth, often ancient peoples after huge catastrophes, would describe Strange people with knowledge would arrive suddenly, and help show others how to do things, like building cities, aqueducts, farming, use of metals and tools. Even alleged tales of Atlantis full of these mysterious people.
    So thats kinda how I see the Seraphs. They've returned to put the world right, or as best they can ... cause it's already effected by the Lens/Rust Realm.
    Seeing how, Seraphs seem highly negatively effected by the rust realm, even instable sensitive ... stands reason, they are from the far opposite spectrum and place. None of the human traders encountered so far, talk about the storms, rifts, or going insane, or being effected by "instability" , I kinda think if they fully experienced that, it'd be something they'd talk about.
    I do kinda think, devs left that part vague, just to have it make sense , you suddenly exist, spawn into the world .. and they came up with a race that no one can dispute , making it easier to swallow, having to do everything and progress from scratch.

    • @Gigutriel
      @Gigutriel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The flavor text when choosing your classes suggests that the Seraphim are in some way connected to people that lived through the rot, maybe some reincarnation, or something more complex. I do agree that drifters were likely once human rather than being spawned from the rust world directly
      The spectrum of realms theory you mention would explain why the player takes damage in the rust world, but drifters can survive fine in the overworld, unfortunately there's nothing so far that points to the existence of a seraph home realm... maybe something will be revealed in the future that makes this theory more plausible

      @@Gigutriel It could also be that they are 'copying' or mimicing what they have as records when they could still access the world. As a way they normally connect or integrate with humans when they arrive. But they are normally used to SOME kind of civilization they need to deal with and form a life in. Rather than unexpectedly ending up in the wilderness where them preparing to live a life and aid humans the best they can is wasted and they need to actually build a civilization from scratch rather than simply aiding and guiding a existing one/

    These machines are something truly terrifying…I’ve never seen the larger machines so it adds a sense of mystery and fear…Imagine being in this guy’s perspective wandering a dark tunnel only to encounter a large metal construct that’s eerily human in design as it just…stares at you. An empty hollow stare…Also imagine if in game instead of starring at the player character they’re actually starring directly at you?…Considering the lore says the machine would stare at something else whenever he told his story then it’s very possible this…thing is starring at us…it know’s we are watching…

    My theory is that Seraphs are a kind of Homonculi, machines or evolution of machines mentionned in the story became sentient and altered by the eldritch clockwork. This would explain the instrument noises, lack of clarity, "Waking up" as in "Turning on" maybe our temporal stability is also a way to describe our own winding mechanisms going haywire if influenced too much by temporal messings.

    I would add one thing.
    Temporal storms add a wierd effect to the world around you in addition to the gears and distortions.
    The ground looks less like rust and more like it's melting, as do trees and if you can them to sit still long enough organisms. ((Thanks creative mode)) Plus there is this contant upwelling of black dust in the air. If you want my opinion the rot is still there locked away in the Rust World. I forgot the player takes poison damage if they stay in a temporal rift for to long. Check the damage chat and see.
    I also think Jonas set the Rot loose. AWhen the emporer called upon him to find a solutionto the rot Tobias states: "I remember finding it strange when for a moment his face ran pale and he seemed to shake with fright. But there was nothing strange about that, I see now."
    Why would he unless he already knew what they faced?

  • @Sarafimm2

    I have a theory that the Seraphs (the players) are healthy people who were transported forward through time with their memories wiped clean. They don't remember anything except how to talk and survive the wilderness with the clothes they have on them. It makes me wonder a bit about the Traders though and if they have anything to do with bringing the Seraphs to their arrival point because every Seraph "wakes up" not to far from a Trader.

    • @Gigutriel
      @Gigutriel  ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I think they are either a sort of reincarnation / immortality experiment, or people who were transformed by temporal instability, but I definitely think it was an effect of Jonas' work either way. And I've heard the traders are foreigners, from somewhere the rot didn't really affect things, or they just lived in the post-rot villages that their dialogue alludes to. i cut a part of the video that analyzed their dialogue, they have a whole religious ideology around wealth and using it for passage into a physical / spiritual ascension. That set of beliefs seems restricted to the traders, which implies they all came from the same cultural background

    • @ZonkPJ
      @ZonkPJ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      I think the players are time travelers from the past that travel to the future in a (vane) attempt to flee the Machine-God.
      Somehow the time-traveling erases part of their memories, but not all, and that is why they remember what they where before. And that actually explains why we have Blackguards, and other classes which seem to be from the Rot Times (I guess the malefactors are the rebels/criminals the Blackguards hunt).
      And i also think the drifters are those that did not travel to the future, transformed into machines by the Machine-God, the Rot, or even both. Because, when you have time travel, nothing is stopping the Machine-God of the future to send the Rot to the past to create himself. or some weird stuff like that.

      I kinda doubt this for a few reasons. For one, seraphs are clearly physically distinct species from in-game humans. My thinking is that Falx' plan was to give humanity even more time by "breaking reality" - either he tried to dialate time to be able to work indefinetly on the cure as the rot is held at bay with "stasis" or break his way into a clear universe, a slate that was not rotting.
    From what people said here (if I understand this) player character is called a seraphim and I would agree that player's existance might be related to Falx' experiment- a being outside of time, a being that can die and return nearly indefinete amout of time

  • @_schylag_137

    i find it peculiar the game's logo is a tree with hidden gears underneath. The characters having instrument voices? the huge mech creature in the temporal storm? The mechanical nature of the temporal gears and Jonas inventions?
    What if the Machine God recreated the world in a clockwork fashion. Humans reincarnated with the "prima materia" of time, regressed in a vessel made of cogs and gears? The storms might be the old world seeping in, or what is left of it.
    Edit: honestly the more i think of this the more it makes sense, temporal stability is like the old world recalling you. the loading screen is like a summon from the Machine God. idk if the reasons are positive or more like a "i have no mouth but i must scream" scenario.

    • @samarthur407
      @samarthur407 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Honestly this would be a cool twist. Perhaps the Machine God 'saved' the world by rebuilding it (or perhaps shifted reality) as the only solution to the Rot. What if, in this 'man vs machine' example, the Machine God is not exactly evil but benevolent however due to it's construct, it's beyond human understanding.
      So, as you mentioned, the 'true' world is long dead and due to temporal instability, it leaks/breaches into the constructed reality our player takes part in. In this version, Drifters could be the result of both the Rot and reality distorting, so when they breach the gap, they appear as monsters defying human reasoning. Could also tie in with why they drop gears.

    My only complaint is that you understated just how dangerous the Rot was. In one of the passages, it talks about it covering the land, with the writer accidentally stepping in someone’s ribcage and questioning if that person was still alive. I read the majority of the lore quite a time ago aside from some of the Chronicles, I do remember the child in the cave one tho.
    From what I recall I remember it being self implied that Tobias (Jonas Falx's childhood friend) was actually the person who managed to escape the rot at the end. The way it was described it sounded a lot like him. Also, he seems to have gained some sort of immortality somehow as it is stated by him talking about experience that he has had over the past hundred years or more. Aside from that he also probably stayed underground for another handful of hundreds years or maybe more.

    tbh I wanted to discover a lot of the lore on my own but every time I spotted this video I got more and more curious as honestly, everything the traders say about the drifters and curious where you came from are very curious so I just gave in and watched.
    dang thats dark, a full on plague, a crazy scientist that may not know what he's even messing with, city of ember style underground city with BIG ASS ROBOTS. I wonder what else they got planned for the lore.

      Drifters being humans is a common theory, but there's nothing that points to it directly other than the trader's folklore, and they are made of flax and metal. Maybe that's just what happens when you mess with the rust world, hope we will find the truth

    It's quite interesting that "blackguards" were the enforcers of law and order in the underground, because "blackguard" is an actual English term, albeit very antiquated. It is pronounced "blaggard", and it means a dishonorable person, a scoundrel. "To blackguard" someone means to abuse them, verbally or physically. It's a telling choice for a name. Some of the other class names are also telling. "Commoner", "tailor", and "hunter" are innocuous enough. "Clockmaker" sounds equally innocuous until you know more about Jonas and his creations. "Malefactor" literally means "criminal", another bit of antique English. It's a particularly evocative name for a class that in any other game would simply be called "thief" or "rogue"; it is the opposite of "benefactor".

    it should be noted how the character classes are also the former lives of humans, blackgaurds, hunters, clockmakers, and malefactors, who all seem to relate to old lore as its described. malefactors particularly, old rebels punished with being sent to the surface to gather supplies and as such have distinct skills for scavenging and hiding from threats

  • @Human-163
    @Human-163 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Perhaps the Lens was a bigger/better version of the translocator. What I assumed from the info I have is that Jonas wanted to create a portal to escape the Rot. As Jonas is more of a mechanic and engineer rather than a medic or biologist. And in so doing he accidentally made a connection with the mechanical plane. Though it is of note that Jonas and the rest of medieval society had access to alchemy so perhaps they could have tried to develop a cure through this. However the Rot for all we know could have appeared from alchemy and/or another world (which in it self could have been reach by alchemy) such as the mechanical one. Perhaps even another world entirely.
    While we have very little info on the lore we can only assume that the Lens and the creature from the tale of "the boy who went down the tunnels" are the same. While I must admit that the theory of Jonas creating a machine so grand in design that it invoked an eldritch being is cool as hell, we can also assume that he went mad by looking at the other world through the machine. This would be in line with Lovecraftian horror as one can develop madness by seeing eldritch landscapes as much as from eldritch creatures. And the ever watching "machine" could be a creature conjured from the mechanical plane through the Lens. Maybe as a guardian of the Lens to maintain the connection between it's world and ours. It could also very well be that the Lens/machine Jonas made in the caves transformed into the ever watching machine of the story after the connection with the mechanical plane was made.
    Reeeeeally cool and interesting Lore over all and great vid by the way.

    There's a rather interesting theory about seraphs being made by Falx with the miracle machine. As there is many ideas within alchemy of ascendance through transmuting the human body. The main idea being that the seraphs we're created to be the eventual solution of temporal apocalypse. Its a bit more involved than that but its at the very least interesting idea.
    And on an unrelated note certain item descriptions for clothing items also point towards the society before the apocalypse being quite literally just 1300s earth.
