Jon, love this channel, and I appreciate all of the great information you are giving us -- HOWEVER -- save the furniture work for later when you are doing the interior of Antidote. Half of this episode was reworking dresser drawers.
was about to comment when you switched to the flap disk! ahahah i got thinking: this fella has the patience of a saint to be sanding that off! you will be done but my experience with overhead lams is: pre wet the area generously and then depending of the width of the cloth i apply a fillet of thickness epoxy. my experience has been, 1 fillet per 100mm of width. handle the cloth however you can and go straight for the aluminum roller, cinch all of it and keep on rolling or brushing the rest of the resin into it. peel ply wants to naturally stick to fully wetted out grp so its a matter of getting it on and then eliminate wrinkles and air bubles. i have yet to use vacuum on my boat, it really is the best way to consolidate laminations, but a lot of work and consumables. nice work!
Thank you. The epoxy that I rolled on and wetted the glass out with had about 10% of 403 microfibers in it which seems to make it a bit extra tacky without harming the ability to wet out (as I understand…) Using a few thickened fillets is a good idea to act as little “ Velcro” strips. The vacuum makes for a really nice lamination. If you haven’t already noticed I’m a glutton for punishment, so I don’t mind the extra steps. Haha.
Nicely done. Those electric scissors are the bomb! Needed one of those last week. Hoping my wife doesn't notice the epoxy on her once nice kitchen scissors 🤓
I understand the frustration with drawers not being square. The longer the drawer slides are the more the problem is exaggerated. If the case also isn't square, that adds to the problem. It's frustrating,i know.🤔🥴🥴😠
My favourite job. In my case repairs under a catamaran hull, suspended 36cm above a damp grassy foreshore. My technique is to apply a binding coat to the surface, when that starts to go tacky, apply the dry glass, then wet out, and Peelply. Better not to try too many layers at once. I put a layer of silica thickened resin on before the Peelply.
That sounds like a good approach. I was dreading having to wet out the glass upside down though in the cramped space. It seems to have worked well in the end.
Nicely done. I have to say that looked like NO fun!. I can imagine hanging fiberglass on the ceiling is difficult enough but filming it at the same time in such a cramped space. NO Fun! Thanks for filming for our benefit. It turned out great!
Haha. Thanks! 🙏 it was about as fun as it looked. I am pretty happy with how it came out in the end and learned a few new things along the way… mainly that I don’t like glassing overhead 🤣
Your work on Antidote has become a masterclass on refitting a boat, the CAD imagery is an awesome extra step in showing what you are planning and implementing 🤙
The modern nomenclature to assign levels of difficulty is “technical” 😊 Could you have laid up the extra reinforced glass before you installed the forward peak shelf? Inaccessible drawers is where you stash the stash. 😂
Outstanding work. I wouldn't want to grind upside down or apply resin over my face! This was a milestone task, for sure. I am super impressed with the layup schedule and load distribution plan -- that SS Bracket will be the icing on a very strong cake. Will that bracket be bedded in epoxy? It seems to me that would that further stiffen the connection and transfer load carrying back to the glasswork.
I need to install an inner forestay on my boat and working out how to do it. I like the idea of that bracket to strengthen and distribute the forces of the staysail. So the staysail fitting or padeye bolts through that fitting? I'm doing mine on a mooring so don't have access to vacuum ... haven't quite worked out how to hold wet fiberglass firmly to an overhead surface yet while its curing...
As at least one other has mentioned in the comments, thickened epoxy (with 403 and/or 406 and then buttered or troweled into the surface should grab and hold a wetted out section of glass upside down. The vacuum is an extra step to get a better glass to resin ratio, keep everything really tight … and it’s fun. Haha. Good luck with your project. 🙌👍
Jon, any chance using thin plywood (1/8"-1/4") or formica and some some type material between the plywood and glass to release the glass/resin from the plywood when stuck to the deck. Maybe if you used a layer of thickened epoxy on top of the glass... then press it all up to the deck, that might help keep the resin from dripping all over you (just a thought). Duane

Haha, what fun! Surely with the vacuum, once the initial set has happened, can you not turn it off? Is it not best to not leave the peel ply too long, easier to remove then?
I usually run the pump until the epoxy thin film cure time just to be safe. If I add some heat I feel pretty safe doing that. My understanding is that peel ply can be left on indefinitely and protects things until you’re ready to glass/finish. 👍
