For decades I wanted the Fat Boy, but as I got older (60’ish) I really started gravitating towards the old school looking bikes and there was nothing else out there that had the appearance of the Soft Slim. I bought a brand new 2019 Slim in that denim red color and I have absolutely loved this bike. I live in an area where there are a lot of “Lamborarri’s” running around. I can be on my Slim and a Lamborghini or Ferrari pulls up at a red light next to me, and everyone around us is looking at my Harley Davidson! They just have a certain “mystique” about them, even though everyone knocks them. I love my Slim. In addition, I have not had one single problem with it. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed the scenery and the commentary. I agree that the new Softail platform is pretty much the same throughout the lineup, there are practical differences to be sure. For example the Softail Slim has a larger fuel capacity than the Softail Standard. I imagine you must have liked the increase in range from the Standard to the Slim. It's one of my biggest gripes about the Standard: The ridiculously small 3.5 gallon tank on the Standard!! It makes what would otherwise be an excellent all-around bike very limited in it's capacity. great choice, I purchase the 2919 Softail Slim for some of the same reasons. The Slim has the classic old school Harley look that I was going for and resembles the older fat boy style that I like before HD decided to put a 240 mm rear tire on the back.
Good video. I'm starting to dip my toe into the H-D waters after a life time riding "standard" bikes. There was not one bike I haven't modified and I expect the same with a H-D. I'm thinking Softail Standard(mid controls) with new wheels laced up to wear radials in 130/70-18 fr. and 160/70-17 rear. The seat will need some raising and a smidge forward, possibly a modified Crossbones spring saddle. The mini apes will need ditching for something more practical. All my bikes use tank bags, this will be no exception. Thanks for reading.
I got the same bike, same color late last year! I highly recommend getting the tall sissy bar in black. It looks so good on it, and you can easily bungee a backpack to it. I don’t want anything like saddle bags to take away from how great this bike looks
My favourite Softail but the Slim was a fair bit more than the Low Rider that I went for in the end. Was never quite so keen on the SB or SBS due to the lcd gauge and wrinkle thing going on with the handlebars. Fat Boy is the best looking bike I think but the price and over sized tires (and weight) ruled that one out for me. Shawn Smoak rides a Slim (and an RK and an Iron), he is great vlogger to watch especially during the riding season which it is not up in the north of your country at the moment. Thanks. (ps nicely put together and rational explanation of why you traded in the SBS for the Slim.)
Thanks! I was strongly considering the Lowrider too. It has many awesome features like the 5 gal tank, two-up seat, and mag wheels. Great bike for sure, at a great price.
Always thought my first HD would have been a Sporty.. But I saw a 2020 slim for sale locally with low K’s. Had to go see… She followed me home. Lots of bikes have been through my hands and I’ve had thoughts about certain bikes and bike cultures. HD always had my respect due to the history and longevity. Those 1940 bikes thru to the 60’s really were pieces of art. Hell I even like some of the AMC models. But this Slim slammed it home for me. Had it 2 years so far and it shares a stable with 2 other bikes. Fit and finish are second to none. The metal and pain gleam. The sound intoxicates. But that causes a dilemma- I now want a bagger, a chopper and a few others… I’ve arrived at the mother of all MADD (motorcycle attention deficit disorder) brands..
I picked up a Softail standard as well a few months ago. I also liked the fat/slim, ultimately going for the std for the same reasons. I looked at it as a Baja k canvas and added a few things ; fwd controls, sissy bar and pass seat, slip ons etc .
I actually really liked the look of the bars on the slim too, but they arent very comfortable for my height. I put 14inch apes on and wow, what a difference, I wish I had done it years ago.
I was regretting at times getting HD 2020 Softail Slim, I really wanted a Fat Boy or a Street Bob. The down side, when I went I was unable to fully test ride the bikes since it was raining. Now with 2021 HD video, regret not test the Fat Boy again. I've taken my Slim to Stage II, but using Screaming Eagle not to void my factory warranty.
@@immortaldusk Your Slim have ABS? I want to upgrade to Stage 4 or see about trading in later this year Low Rider S, Fat Bob, or Fat Boy. Want dual brake and/or ABS.
Bro I came from a sport bike background too. Even did a few seasons in WERA. Sold everything and some time went by. Eventually started looking a harley. Rode a few and got a 17 slim. Love it for the same reasons but thinking about a road king but love mine at the same time. I live in western north carolina and it's all tight mountain riding and the slim handles well. Anyways, thanks for the vlog it was great!!

@@southernspazz2262 dude that sounds like fun. I'm in canton. I don't get to ride as much as I'd like to but I can make arrangements if you want to meet up one day.
Got my 2023 soft tail standard cause she was the one my cash could by. I still have my 2018 kawasaki Zed 900 and will not let her go. been riding 50+ years with many bikes of different styles, BSA, 3 HARLEYS, 3 HONDAS, 2 YAMAHAS and a Suzuki gixer. Never could afford a NEW harley. I refuse to finance. I would not take the Harley until the dealer put Drag bars on her because I ride that way. also had the dealer replace the plastic intake manifold for an aluminum one. not happy with the apehanger style.. all my bikes had clip-ons or drag bars my 3 old sportsers had lower buck horn bars. Your slim is a great ride. stay in the wind.👍
I’ve been thinking about a Softail slim s. I have a Vulcan 650 S Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my bike. The power is surprising, at 65 I can accelerate fast enough to push my butt back, but damn, I want a Harley. Listening to you has eased my angst. What you described about fun on any road, is how I feel on my Vulcan ~ fun as hell on any road. While I’m still thinking about a Harley, I think, based on what you described about how you felt, I’m in no rush, I already have that experience! Got lucky, I guess. Great vid.
I really wasn't expecting much, but I'm pleasantly surprised ! Sure, you got your ride in, but I enjoyed your comments and logic behind 'em ! Happy Rides, ok ?
And here you had me worried there was something wrong with the standard. so just cosmetic preference then? no performance gripes? great vid again, I liked the bit where you wrapped your mind around understanding the Harley's value interesting perspective!
Yea, I've only heard good things about how the Slim handles . . . similarly with the Deluxe and the Heritage. Personally I prefer the pre-2018 Softails, especially the Fat Boy. Much prefer the looks of the older Fat Boy, and have heard that it's easier to maneuver with its narrower tires. In the end, what counts is that you enjoy what ever you ride.
Best motorcycle ever I have a 2018 love my motorcycle but I'm changing the handlebars and I'll be posting a video hopefully not regretting the change, it was nice to whacth you video, thanks
Again you nailed I own a 2018 fat boy 107 kinda wish it was the 114...kinda. Rode a heritage it was way more Flickable but it’s not my fatboy. I think I just found a John Maxwell replacement channel. Great work
I traded my 2006 Fatboy for a 2012 Fatboy. The sixth gear is nice although I get a little more vibration from the 103 versus the 88 cubic inch. The 2006 handled better and was more enjoyable to ride, especially on twisty roads….also a little more forgiving if you went into a turn a little too fast. Your comment in regard to the handling of the Fatboy versus the Slim has me considering the Softtail Slim model… thanks for the review. Do you notice much vibration at cruising speeds with the 107? Is there an electronic tach by any chance?
I know the 2018+ Fat Boy that I rode handles much different than your 2012 due to the difference in rear tire size, so I'm not sure you'd see much of a difference going from a Fat Boy to Slim in general, however if you go from the previous Softail chassis to the 2018+ Softail chassis, I think you wil notice a huge difference in handling. The new chassis is lighter, stiffer, and has better suspension both front and rear. The Milwaukie 8 is a very smooth engine, and there is little to no vibration at cruising speed.
good content, I almost bought a Slim, still sometimes think I should have. Its such a pretty bike, but I ended up on a Fat Bob S, It just came so well setup for a stock bike. The Slim was a close second, but I wasn't the biggest fan of floorboards, no passenger amenities, so would need a bit of extra work to get ready for my normal riding.
You spoke about the rider comfort on the Fatboy but didn't say anything at all about the rider triangle (handlebars, seat, pegs) in terms of comfort. I'm assuming its very comfortable for you but my concern as a taller rider is that the rider triangle is too cramped for taller guys. Any feedback in that regard would be appreciated. Thanks for a great video!
@danield831 Yeah, I'm short, so I don't know how it is for taller riders. Most big guys I know of gravitate towards touring bikes. I recommend checking out Matt Laidlaw on YT, he's quite tall and test rides all the HDs.
Softail standard is awesome. I want to get one to oneday extend the front legs on it as it screams new-day Captain America stance. However, softail slim (specifically 2018+), has everything going for it. Looking similar to the knuckle, both with great motors and looks. The M8 is one of the best looking and performing motors HD has made in a long time. Get the detachable windshield, not stock seat, bags, exhaust- boom touring. Except the softail frame is exceptional and rigidly mounted whereas the roadking is rubber mounted. Lets face the facts, its a sweet package to have both touring capabilities and the option to hot dog it down some turns, without sacrifice.
Nice video, I really like the slim, but decided on a 21 street bob just for the bigger motor and up graded oil pump. Also wasn't down with the fat front tire on the slim, or the boards. But I did swap out the apes for some breakout drag bars on my bob, but now thinking about swapping out for some hollywood bars from the slim on my bob.
@immortaldusk Personally feel that Harley should've gone with their better looking apes on the bob, the stock apes have a weird bend and kinda cheapens the bob on esthetics IMHO.
I own a Slim but if i could frankenstein a bike id like Softail Standard chrome spoked wheels/rims, and handlebars, Slim tank and Slim floorboards, Low Rider rear fender. Sport Glide bags. Perfection.
well done ,,, i love the fatboy look,, but the new fatboy does not have the solo big train like headlamp that gives it that iconic look.. also the tires make it harder to turn,.. i used to hate the look of the slim with its old fashioned spoke wheels and solo look, but after riding the new fatboy and buying a 107 low rider i now am fitting the hollywood bars of a slim to it, and bought a heritage 114 which has been slightly moded , i will alter the front to look like a slim;';;; how tastes and opinions change;;; should have bought a slim to start with.. you are bang on with the same view as me , enjoy the ride not rush it..
I know I'm a little late for the party here, but In your opinion, which handles better, the Standard or the Slim? Was one more nimble than the other? TIA
I hear you on the comments of the looks of the Slim/Fatboy, and I agree. But are you also saying that the Standard didn't handle as well as the Slim too?
@@immortaldusk OK. There's a strange chemistry of looks, feel, riding position, handling and even sound that all has to come together for "THE" bike that fits us perfectly. Happy Riding Mark!
Very interesting review. I'm considering to get a Harley (next to my Kawa Z900RS) . Currently in doubt between a Slim, Sport Glide and Fat Boy. Fat Boy probably won't be it because of the things you mention and already figured that. But choosing between the Slim and Sport Glide...Hard choice. They look very similar. Your take?
The more I look at the Sport Glide the more I like it. Hard bags, fairing, aluminum wheels, forward controls, big gas tank, and 2-up seat. All great features, and the Slim is very bare bones. I'd go for the Sport Glide if you expect to do some long distance riding, and the Slim if you'll only be riding a couple hours at a time.
Great discussion topic. Question, are the fork legs taller on the Slim or the heritage? Anyone know if all models running 49mm forks universally the same length? Are the forks on a stock Road King also the same but with heavier spring suspension setup? What’s the cost to add a second brake rotor? Is your Slim equipped w abs? From a collective bench mark for handling big vtwins is 130 in the front and 180/200 in the rear. This is likely an LA or SF thing bcuz of grooves cut into the asphalt pavement on the state highways. The groves reduces hydro planing yet will grab your full attention fast when your front or rear tire sets into a groove! Will the Slim accept a wheel tire wider then 150? Oh, what size gas tank?
Thanks for watching. I believe all the forks are the same. It would makes sense from a cost-based-perspective. HD doesn't publish their spring rates anywhere that I've found, so I'm not sure if touring and softail are the same. I imagine adding a second rotor would be cost prohibitive since it would also require different wheels. My Slim does have ABS. I wouldn't recommend a tire over 150 unless you got a wider wheel rim. I've heard the fender can accomodate a 180 from certain brands of tires, but not all, and it wouldn't fit on a 3.5" wide wheel. The Slim has a 5 gallon tank.
The Softail Slim has a larger tank and thus longer range that the Softail Standard. However the lean angle on the Slim is terrible and it will scrape in the slightest of curves. On the other hand the Standard has good lean angle but terrible range at only about 120 miles per tank. It just seems that HD can never get it just right...there's always some little (or not so little) niggling thing for their Softail lineup that makes them come up short. Both things were deal breakers for me. I went with a Triumph instead and I'm very satisfied with my choice!!
The M8 Softail Slim can lean much further than the older Twin Cam Slim, which had a notoriously poor max lean angle. I think you'll be surprised by the M8 version.
Why do they say the slim is not a head turner, I think it looks great, but keep seeing ppl say they are not the best looking Harley’s. What would they consider a head turner….
Funny, same reasons I bought a slim. At first I couldn't figure out after I bought my Harley why all the Harley riders were now waving at me. Oh yeah, I'm not riding a sport bike now, but a Harley! LOL
I'm good on my 2020 standard, rode the slim as well as my friend has one. Not to many differences that justify the cost difference. Ive owned the Heritage and an electraglide. Bike styles are that styles.... the slim or fat boy won't out perform the standard one bit. Just sayin.
Amen to a nice fatty front tire brother. I can’t stand the skinny front wheels especially with spokes for some reason. It looks nasty to me. But thats the beauty of HDs and cruisers in general, you can customise them to your very own and do what YOU want. It’s about personal preference and self expression. And that’s something the sport bike guys just don’t get. - a fellow ex sport bike rider
Why is this bike burning my calf? Is that normal? I’m 5’4 slim 2020. I keep my right let away and out in front from the tank as much as possible and It still cooks my leg. Anyone else?
Harleys doing away with the Standard for 2023. I think the core issue is that it has a very specific, old school look, but Harley marketed it as a bike to be changed and customized to your liking. Which would've been fine, if it wasn't very old school looking. That's why I bought it; because it's an old school looking bike
@@immortaldusk Do you mind if I ask how tall you are? I've had my Slim for almost two years and it's very comfortable except on longer rides. I have some wrist issues and the position it puts me in eventually makes my hands go completely numb and I've wondered if the 4.5" risers would bring me up enough to alleviate that issue. Thanks for the video and I love that Billiard Red!

I also like the FatBoy before the 2018’s..I added FatBoy bars to my 2019 heritage, I love it
Thanks for watching!
Appreciate your candor. Completely satisfied with my 2020 Slim . Do wish I had a long flat empty road to cruise , like you’ve got there ...
Thanks!
I got the same bike, same color late last year! I highly recommend getting the tall sissy bar in black. It looks so good on it, and you can easily bungee a backpack to it. I don’t want anything like saddle bags to take away from how great this bike looks
I got an Edward Richie Traveler Sissy bar and a review coming soon!
I had a 2015 model Slim, it was a great Harley, really enjoyed riding it.
@@immortaldusk Thanks, yes.
Blank canvas, I hate spell ck
The Standard is a perfect blank canvas for sure! Thanks for watching.
I bought a slim new in 2013 with the 103ci motor, I still have it and I love it. I don't think i'll ever get rid of it.
The Fat Boy is a cool bike, but just doesn't turn as niceley as the Slim. Thanks for watching!
@@immortaldusk Your Slim have ABS? I want to upgrade to Stage 4 or see about trading in later this year Low Rider S, Fat Bob, or Fat Boy. Want dual brake and/or ABS.
@@joefrias Yes it has ABS. I don't have enough twisty roads where I am to need dual disks, but it would be nice.
Thanks for watching! I love the Road King.
Grew up in Highlands bro! We should connect at some point and do some riding! Currently living in South Carolina. I ride just about everyday so im open.
@@southernspazz2262 dude that sounds like fun. I'm in canton. I don't get to ride as much as I'd like to but I can make arrangements if you want to meet up one day.
Road kings are badass dude, id totally recommend one.

I have a Vulcan 650 S
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my bike.

Fantastic video. Exactly the situation I find myself in. I really needed this!

Love the landscape of Idaho...looks like It's fun to ride there . You can see for miles...no surprises !

The Slim in billiard blue is my fav model followed LRS and Deluxe.
It's a great color. Thanks for watching!
Great video.your articulations of the riding experience , should be a harley commercial.well done !
Thank you!
And here you had me worried there was something wrong with the standard. so just cosmetic preference then? no performance gripes? great vid again, I liked the bit where you wrapped your mind around understanding the Harley's value interesting perspective!
The Standard is a great bike! I changed primarily for looks, but now its more than that. I like the forwards and floorboards better too!
Thank you!
Is yours a Slim also? What bars are you getting? Please don't say apes :)

Tough choice. 2 of my 3 favorite Harleys in the 2021 lineup. The Deluxe being the other.
Thanks for watching! I think they discontinued the Deluxe for 2021. Such a shame too, great looking bike.
@@immortaldusk Can't believe they canceled the Deluxe. And they blacked-out the Heritage. At least they gave us the Softail Standard.
Nice choice. Love the Slim. My 48 is your younger brother.
Thank you for watching!
Again you nailed I own a 2018 fat boy 107 kinda wish it was the 114...kinda. Rode a heritage it was way more Flickable but it’s not my fatboy. I think I just found a John Maxwell replacement channel. Great work
Thank you so much!
You remind me of earlier Harley-Davidson adverts - about riding being about the journey rather than the destination.
Thanks for watching! Got no place to go, and all the time in the world to get there!
Excellent video, I owned the vivid black, love this bike, the only way to understand the slim is driving it, best regards from Santiago of Chile

The Fat Bob is a great bike! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching! Completely agree with everything you said.
The Street Bob is awesome, and actually what I ride now. I do like the stock handlebars on the Street Bob though. Thanks for watching.
@immortaldusk Personally feel that Harley should've gone with their better looking apes on the bob, the stock apes have a weird bend and kinda cheapens the bob on esthetics IMHO.
Looks like you found the best one for you. They're beautiful machines. Good ridin'.
Thanks for watching!
congrats! nice video thanks! were you able to utilize the harley freedom promise on your softail standard trade in?
I didn't. That was only available in 2019 and for Sportsters only. Would have been great if I could though!
I own a Slim but if i could frankenstein a bike id like Softail Standard chrome spoked wheels/rims, and handlebars, Slim tank and Slim floorboards, Low Rider rear fender. Sport Glide bags. Perfection.
Not a bad idea, you aught to pitch that to HD! Thanks for watching.
Just got a 23 softail standard, I love the bike but I really want a softail heritage
Both are great bikes, but with the standard you can really make it your own version of the Heritage. Thanks for watching!
slim looks awesome mag wheels would be nice though (my preference)
I would definitely prefer mag wheels too! Thanks for watching.
Good video, sharing info and all making good sense about 2 of my favs. also. Are you running stock exhaust?

@@immortaldusk thanks, good to know.
I would think the longer range of the 5 gallon gas tank on the Slim would make a big difference where your riding! Beautiful scenery.

If you're like me, you want to ride them all! Thanks for watching.
well done ,,, i love the fatboy look,, but the new fatboy does not have the solo big train like headlamp that gives it that iconic look.. also the tires make it harder to turn,.. i used to hate the look of the slim with its old fashioned spoke wheels and solo look, but after riding the new fatboy and buying a 107 low rider i now am fitting the hollywood bars of a slim to it, and bought a heritage 114 which has been slightly moded , i will alter the front to look like a slim;';;; how tastes and opinions change;;; should have bought a slim to start with.. you are bang on with the same view as me , enjoy the ride not rush it..

Really great review video! Great content! Keep up the good work!

My man I have a sport and a cruiser as well. I have to say I kinda agree with your points 🤘🏻
Makes sense you like a slimmer sleeker bike you came from performance. I wouldn’t be surprised if you like the vrods and other similar styles.
Maybe, I've never ridden one before. Thanks for watching!
I know I'm a little late for the party here, but In your opinion, which handles better, the Standard or the Slim? Was one more nimble than the other? TIA
They are very similar. The slim's wider handle bars make slow speed maneuvers a little easier. At speed, it's hard to tell the difference.
Thanks Mark, I appreciate the info.@@immortaldusk
I'd like to see a slim with some mini apes on it...
I hear you on the comments of the looks of the Slim/Fatboy, and I agree. But are you also saying that the Standard didn't handle as well as the Slim too?
They handled almost exactly the same. I think the Slim was a little easier at low speeds due to the wider bars.
Thinking of getting a slim myself to test the difference.
Thanks for watching! Can't go wrong with a Slim.
Congrats! Looks great
Thanks!
Sucks they discontinued it.

I love the look too, even in red
Yeah I'm usually not a fan of red bikes, but that wine red is sweet!
Nice , but between the standard and the slin in terms of driving wich one is better?
They're pretty much the same. I would test both and decide for yourself.
@@immortaldusk Thank you Mark!!!
Why do they say the slim is not a head turner, I think it looks great, but keep seeing ppl say they are not the best looking Harley’s. What would they consider a head turner….
Yeah I think it's fantastic looking! Thanks for watching.
Funny, same reasons I bought a slim. At first I couldn't figure out after I bought my Harley why all the Harley riders were now waving at me. Oh yeah, I'm not riding a sport bike now, but a Harley! LOL
Haha! Thanks for watching.
My picks are the Slim, and Street Bob. I got the Street Bob. Didn't like the handlebars, so I put a set from a Slim on it. Mucho better!
Awesome, I actually have a street bob now. Thanks for watching!
Perfect and well done on write up!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I'm good on my 2020 standard, rode the slim as well as my friend has one. Not to many differences that justify the cost difference. Ive owned the Heritage and an electraglide. Bike styles are that styles.... the slim or fat boy won't out perform the standard one bit. Just sayin.
Thank you, I agree.

The best thing to do to the Slim is fit a set of Metzeler Cruistec tires.
I'll have to try them out. It's amazing how a good set of tires can transform a motorcycle's handling. Thanks for watching!

Why is this bike burning my calf? Is that normal? I’m 5’4 slim 2020. I keep my right let away and out in front from the tank as much as possible and It still cooks my leg. Anyone else?
Not sure. Hope you figure it out!
Harleys doing away with the Standard for 2023. I think the core issue is that it has a very specific, old school look, but Harley marketed it as a bike to be changed and customized to your liking. Which would've been fine, if it wasn't very old school looking. That's why I bought it; because it's an old school looking bike
Did you change the risers out or are those stock? Nice bike
