Riding in Oregon - Highway 47
Oregon has some of the best roads in the US that I've had the opportunity to ride. It's too bad I won't be here much longer. This is one of my favorite stretches of road, HWY 47 from Mist to Clatskanie.

Halloween Ride in Eastern Idaho

I broke my personal rule of never riding on holidays to get a few more miles on my new Harley, a 2020 Softail Standard. I rode up to Scout Mountain Campground on a nice twisty road which closes Nov 1.

I Love my '19 Slim. Still perfect and even much improved. I honestly have not found another bike I would prefer to ride. (12 bikes previous). The fact that, while looking online at used bikes ads just to see if anyone was dumb enough to sell their Slim yesterday, I did not find one used Slim for sale. HD needs to take note of that (and lose the spoked wheels). Season 7 coming up. I can't wait. Fatboy? Nah. Not much for handling there. Dumb back tire ruins it performance wise.
@@Honest-sy6ys thanks for watching! ride safe!
Where is this filmed?
Pocatello, Idaho
Bought an 883 hugger new in 1988. 4 speed, chain drive, solid mount engine. Hooked. Had a 1995 evo FXDL for 8 years before my 1999 tc88 FXDL. It's not for everyone but at least there's a poor image quality short on my channel if you care to look. Plan to get a dji for next summer and share what we already know. Happy days from sunny Devon.
Get some pipes 🌋🌋🌋
Haha, no I think they're obnoxious and add no power. But I get it that some people like them.
@@immortaldusk well people argue that the worlds most unreasonable job is to mount the stock exhaust on the bike in the HD factory, because it is likely off, the minute after purchasing the bike.😉 Some pipe makes a Harley sound like one, but I understand your concerns. Mine has a flap, which opens and closes. It's good to keep peace with the neighbours. Aside from that it really sounds like a HD with the flap open. 😸🌋🌋🌋
I love the look too, even in red
Yeah I'm usually not a fan of red bikes, but that wine red is sweet!
Even though a person knows all of these things that you touched on since eons, your commentary is very well articulated, as it sounds and is educated 👍👍
Much appreciated! Ride safe!
get on with it. bla bla bla
Love ya! Ride safe!
Thank you for all the content. You helped me make up my mind. I definitely want a Softail slim. Thank you
My pleasure! Enjoy and ride safe!
The Softail Slim has a larger tank and thus longer range that the Softail Standard. However the lean angle on the Slim is terrible and it will scrape in the slightest of curves. On the other hand the Standard has good lean angle but terrible range at only about 120 miles per tank. It just seems that HD can never get it just right...there's always some little (or not so little) niggling thing for their Softail lineup that makes them come up short. Both things were deal breakers for me. I went with a Triumph instead and I'm very satisfied with my choice!!
The M8 Softail Slim can lean much further than the older Twin Cam Slim, which had a notoriously poor max lean angle. I think you'll be surprised by the M8 version.
@@immortaldusk Thanks for the feedback. I'm still doing more research!
You spoke about the rider comfort on the Fatboy but didn't say anything at all about the rider triangle (handlebars, seat, pegs) in terms of comfort. I'm assuming its very comfortable for you but my concern as a taller rider is that the rider triangle is too cramped for taller guys. Any feedback in that regard would be appreciated. Thanks for a great video!
@danield831 Yeah, I'm short, so I don't know how it is for taller riders. Most big guys I know of gravitate towards touring bikes. I recommend checking out Matt Laidlaw on YT, he's quite tall and test rides all the HDs.
I bought a slim new in 2013 with the 103ci motor, I still have it and I love it. I don't think i'll ever get rid of it.
I actually really liked the look of the bars on the slim too, but they arent very comfortable for my height. I put 14inch apes on and wow, what a difference, I wish I had done it years ago.
Does this fit street bob dyna 2016?
I'm not sure. HD's website will let you select your bike and see what parts fit though.
@@immortaldusk both of them are 1 inch diameter but the website says it doesn’t fit!
Personally I cannot stand ape hanger looks. The Reach bars look a lot better
If you like those "Western Bars" you are halfway there. Now try real 6" low rise "BuckHorn Bars"with detents for your Harley controls (one inch size). All through the 70s Harley made their reputation using this bar. It is the best handling cruiser bar available. it is comfortable and offers even better wrist positioning than the Western Bars you have now. Why Harley stopped using Buckhorn low bars is a mystery to me. It defined how the motorcycle handled going back all the way to the 1937 EL Knucklehead. Buckhorns ARE Harley! Boy do they FEEL good!
Jeez, would you get to the point! This is the most boring video I've ever seen!
Thanks for watching!
Another brain fart by the MC , discontinued the Slim … dumbass move. I bought a ‘23 Heritage before they discontinue it .. love it. The 107 M8 is a beautiful engine. Put a Mustang solo seat with the backrest on your bike , you’ll love it , trust me !
Did you see the Revzilla ad? I refuse to buy from them because they ship only FedEx. My experiences with FedEx are unbelievable! They want to ship via a 2nd rate company, they can keep their products.
I have family in Oregon. I need to ride up there and find that road to ride. I see you haven’t uploaded in a few years. I enjoy your videos. I hope someday you return to making videos of your thoughts, bike and rides.
Thanks, hopefully some day when life is less busy!
I had a 2015 model Slim, it was a great Harley, really enjoyed riding it.
So you never said why you switched from standard to slim. You explained why you like slim versus fat boy?????
Amen to a nice fatty front tire brother. I can’t stand the skinny front wheels especially with spokes for some reason. It looks nasty to me. But thats the beauty of HDs and cruisers in general, you can customise them to your very own and do what YOU want. It’s about personal preference and self expression. And that’s something the sport bike guys just don’t get. - a fellow ex sport bike rider
That seat looks great on your bike. I’m riding a 2023 FatBoy and interested in the same seat. Your video was helpful.
Glad it helped!
Could not have the Apes been re-positioned at an angle back toward the rider? 5-15 degrees? Not enough to hit the tank sides but enough to gain an inch of reach?
yeah that works, but when the rise doesn't align with the rake of the forks, the steering feels inconsistent... like the initial push on the bars is difficult. I tried it for a while, didn't like how it felt.
Well, coming from vintage triumphs I like the new bars!
Thanks!
The spec on the internet says they are actually narrower than the stock mini apes, can someone confirm this?
It's possible, but they don't feel like it due to their lower position I think.
Nice , but between the standard and the slin in terms of driving wich one is better?
They're pretty much the same. I would test both and decide for yourself.
@@immortaldusk Thank you Mark!!!
I know I'm a little late for the party here, but In your opinion, which handles better, the Standard or the Slim? Was one more nimble than the other? TIA
They are very similar. The slim's wider handle bars make slow speed maneuvers a little easier. At speed, it's hard to tell the difference.
Thanks Mark, I appreciate the info.@@immortaldusk
Does your softail slim handle passengers nicely. My girl is on the heavy side
Honestly don't know. I have a Street Bob now and my wife rides on the back, but she's about 110 lbs
What is the second Highway 47 is supposed to start in McMinnville
What are fantastic, super-informative and well spoken little information-film you put together! So artfully articulated; even touching on things of the visceral, which are always difficult to relate. You are a stand-out here on the Tube 👍👍 From Southern California ~ Ride Forever! 🦅
Damn dude, thanks!
Got my 2023 soft tail standard cause she was the one my cash could by. I still have my 2018 kawasaki Zed 900 and will not let her go. been riding 50+ years with many bikes of different styles, BSA, 3 HARLEYS, 3 HONDAS, 2 YAMAHAS and a Suzuki gixer. Never could afford a NEW harley. I refuse to finance. I would not take the Harley until the dealer put Drag bars on her because I ride that way. also had the dealer replace the plastic intake manifold for an aluminum one. not happy with the apehanger style.. all my bikes had clip-ons or drag bars my 3 old sportsers had lower buck horn bars. Your slim is a great ride. stay in the wind.👍
Wow you have quite a lot of experience! Thanks for watching!
@@immortaldusk Nah, still learning. that why I watch videos like yours... life is one big school. Subscribed to your channel.🙂
@@joemann3536 Thanks!
What seat is closest to the frame between the profiler and the profiler LS
I think the difference is negligible. The best seat I have found for Softails that maintain the stock seating position is the Mustang Wide Tripper. It's what I'm using now, but I no longer have time to make a video on it. You can find it here ~ www.mustangseats.com/products/6515/wide-tripper-for-harley-davidson-softail-slim-2018-21?color=black&style=original&parttype=solo-seat
You must have a lot of spare $$$$$$$$
More than some, less than others I imagine. It's all relative.
Still riding? No videos for two years.
Yes, still riding. I was making videos in between jobs, now fully employed, new girlfriend, and not enough time. Thanks for checking in though!
@@immortaldusk Ah yes, find steady income and women will follow. A fundamental law of nature.
Yea, I've only heard good things about how the Slim handles . . . similarly with the Deluxe and the Heritage. Personally I prefer the pre-2018 Softails, especially the Fat Boy. Much prefer the looks of the older Fat Boy, and have heard that it's easier to maneuver with its narrower tires. In the end, what counts is that you enjoy what ever you ride.
good review.
Thanks! And thanks for watching
Thanks for the video it really helped. I’m looking at a bike now and it has the mini apes on it, don’t like them. The Harley reach back bars are like the bars I used to have on my sportster, comfortable and relax ride.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Nice video, I really like the slim, but decided on a 21 street bob just for the bigger motor and up graded oil pump. Also wasn't down with the fat front tire on the slim, or the boards. But I did swap out the apes for some breakout drag bars on my bob, but now thinking about swapping out for some hollywood bars from the slim on my bob.
The Street Bob is awesome, and actually what I ride now. I do like the stock handlebars on the Street Bob though. Thanks for watching.
@immortaldusk Personally feel that Harley should've gone with their better looking apes on the bob, the stock apes have a weird bend and kinda cheapens the bob on esthetics IMHO.
Just imagine, if they called the standard...a street bob classic...🤯
Always thought my first HD would have been a Sporty.. But I saw a 2020 slim for sale locally with low K’s. Had to go see… She followed me home. Lots of bikes have been through my hands and I’ve had thoughts about certain bikes and bike cultures. HD always had my respect due to the history and longevity. Those 1940 bikes thru to the 60’s really were pieces of art. Hell I even like some of the AMC models. But this Slim slammed it home for me. Had it 2 years so far and it shares a stable with 2 other bikes. Fit and finish are second to none. The metal and pain gleam. The sound intoxicates. But that causes a dilemma- I now want a bagger, a chopper and a few others… I’ve arrived at the mother of all MADD (motorcycle attention deficit disorder) brands..
Makes sense you like a slimmer sleeker bike you came from performance. I wouldn’t be surprised if you like the vrods and other similar styles.
Maybe, I've never ridden one before. Thanks for watching!
Yep everything you are complaining about is normal to the people who have had harley's for a while.
And I've gotten used to them by now haha. Thanks for watching!
@@immortaldusk I knew you would. My wife had a honda shadow and I couldn't understand why the turn signals were both on the left. Glad you like it. My last big twin was an evo 1340, 4 speed, kick and electric start that I had forever. I thought that thing was special-jumped ahead light years with this one. M8 is a rocket compared....
I bought that same bike about a month ago from a 70 y/o guy who forgot why he bought it, he admitted he caught the bug and lost it that quickly. Had 102 miles on it and I got it for a song. Forward controls were a must. $550 and 2 hours later the bike is ready to go. I'm probably on bike number 16 or 17 in 45 years of riding and this is the best bike I've ever had. So comfortable and powerful and handles like a dream. The softail chassis just eats up the imperfections in the road. Great review-everything you said is spot on.
Couldn't agree more! And totally customizable, best bang for your buck HD out there IMO. Thanks for watching!
Just got a 23 softail standard, I love the bike but I really want a softail heritage
Both are great bikes, but with the standard you can really make it your own version of the Heritage. Thanks for watching!
For decades I wanted the Fat Boy, but as I got older (60’ish) I really started gravitating towards the old school looking bikes and there was nothing else out there that had the appearance of the Soft Slim. I bought a brand new 2019 Slim in that denim red color and I have absolutely loved this bike. I live in an area where there are a lot of “Lamborarri’s” running around. I can be on my Slim and a Lamborghini or Ferrari pulls up at a red light next to me, and everyone around us is looking at my Harley Davidson! They just have a certain “mystique” about them, even though everyone knocks them. I love my Slim. In addition, I have not had one single problem with it. If you like the bike that you are on and riding, it doesn’t matter what brand it is. Cheers
Glad you love it, thanks for watching!
@@immortaldusk Absolutely. Very good videos by the way too. Apologies for not mentioning that to begin with. Excellent breakdown about why you traded in your Standard for the Slim. This video will help a lot of people in making decisions.
I own a Slim but if i could frankenstein a bike id like Softail Standard chrome spoked wheels/rims, and handlebars, Slim tank and Slim floorboards, Low Rider rear fender. Sport Glide bags. Perfection.
Not a bad idea, you aught to pitch that to HD! Thanks for watching.
My picks are the Slim, and Street Bob. I got the Street Bob. Didn't like the handlebars, so I put a set from a Slim on it. Mucho better!
Awesome, I actually have a street bob now. Thanks for watching!
I feel so tempted to buy that seat.
What handlebar is that on the Slim? Is it the same as the Low Rider bar?
I can't remember anymore. It was marketed as a buckhorn bar, but I can't remember the brand.
The best thing to do to the Slim is fit a set of Metzeler Cruistec tires.
I'll have to try them out. It's amazing how a good set of tires can transform a motorcycle's handling. Thanks for watching!
