You can add a few more good songs to your list. 1) Everything That Touches You 2) Enter The Young 3) No Fair At All
      4) Requiem For The Masses 5) Six Man Band (Note: Very good last hit song from late '68).

I was born in 1970, and when I was 3-4 years old, I constantly asked my father to play his record of their greatest hits. He later told me he had wanted to break the vinyl record. To this day, listening to the Association brings up good memories.

For the younger viewers... Back in the Dark Ages of the 1930s thru the 70s, most electronics were powered by vacuum tubes -- similar to what you see with a light bulb, but much skinnier. The development of the "transistor" in the late 1950s (what is now called a computer chip) allowed much smaller TVs and radios to be built -- so much so that you could actually carry a small radio the size of a pack of cigarettes' around with you. Japan developed a cheap and easy method of producing transistor chips, and started in dominating the market for cheap electronics. At that time the label "Made in Japan" was stuck on all products coming from there, and tended to note items that were cheap and often poorly made (although that really applied more to the 1950s, as by the early 70s they pretty much had their manufacturing act together quite well.)
Larry Ramos was the Asian in the band, and no, he was not from Japan. He was born in Hawaii to parents who immigrated there from the Philippines. Prior to the Association, Larry played and sang in the New Cristy Minstrels with Barry McGuire. Larry really was a pioneering face amoung rock and pop groups. Didn't see many Asians up on TV performing hit songs.

Many people interpreted this as a paean to marijuana, which is also known as "Mary Jane." They were probably right. The song was produced by Bones Howe, who would later work on most of the hits for the 5th Dimension. Howe spoke with Bruce Pollock for the book By the Time We Got to Woodstock: The Great Rock 'n' Roll Revolution of 1969. Writes Pollock:
Breaking in with the pot-coded ode "Along Comes Mary," the Association had a long and troubled association with drugs a lot harder than Mary Jane. Bass player Brian Cole overdosed on heroin in 1972. "In the '60s drugs were everywhere," Bones said. "As a producer you had to find ways of getting around that. You'd work in the daytime not at night. If you're working with singers you don't let them have a whole day to laugh and carry on and have a good time and then come in the studio and try to sing. You try to get them at two in the afternoon when they've just gotten up. Most of the time I worked with studio musicians - guys I worked with all the time. I loved what they did and that's why I hired them over and over again and I loved the results we got. I worked with lead sheets, chord sheets, never written arrangements. I made jazz records in the '50s and that was improvised. In the '60s I was improvising with the rhythm section and when I got to the vocal parts we worked out arrangements."
This was the first hit for The Association, who gained a following in Los Angeles, but had a hard time getting a record deal. They signed to a small label called Valiant Records, who were rewarded when this became a hit, and when their follow-up, "Cherish," went to #1.

Every time I think that I'm
The only one who's lonely someone calls on me
And every now and then I spend
My time at rhyme and verse and curse those faults in me
    And then along comes Mary
    Mary, Mary
    Then along comes Mary
    Mary, Mary
And does she wanna give me kicks
And be my steady chick and give me pick of memories?
Or maybe rather gather tales from all the
Fails and tribulations no one ever sees?
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
    Sweet as the punch
When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks
Whose sickness is the games they play
And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks
Make jokes as who is most to blame today
    And then along comes Mary
    Mary, Mary
    Then along comes Mary
    Mary, Mary
And does she wanna set them free
And let them see reality from where she got her name?
And will they struggle much when told that such
A tender touch of hers will make them not the same?
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
    Sweet as the punch
And when the morning of the warning's passed
The gassed and flaccid kids are flung across the stars
The psychodramas and the traumas gone
The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars
    And then along comes Mary
    Mary, Mary
    Then along comes Mary
    Mary, Mary
And does she wanna see the stains the dead remains
Of all the pains she left the night before?
Or will their wakin' eyes reflect the lies
And make them realize their urgent cry for sight no more?
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
    Sweet as the punch
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
    Sweet as the punch

My first concert! I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl November 19, 1967. Along with The Association was, The Animals, Sopwith Camel, Sunshine Company, The Everly Brothers, and the Who,
At the end of the Who's set, Roger Daltrey said he felt bad because we were getting wet sitting in the rain, next thing I knew their drums and drummer(Keith Moon)ended up in the fountain in front of the stage. It's hard to believe that was 55 years ago.

June & Jean Millington, also Filipino, fronted an all-female band called The Svelts which opened for groups like The Lovin' Spoonful, The Turtles & The Youngbloods during this time.
They would later be signed to Reprise Records & renamed Fanny becoming the first all-female band to release an album on a major label.

Brad & Lex, thanks for finally getting to the Association, a very ‘creative and talented’ group of guys putting out fabulous music. For sure, the lyrics are a ‘little challenging’ to understand but, do a search on them and be amazed at the complexity. Another GREAT reaction, thank you!

The Association are an excellent band from the 1960s, known for their rich, layered vocal harmonies. "Along Comes Mary" was their first hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and it was a Top 10 hit, peaking at #7 on July 16, 1966. In all, they had 13 hits on the Hot 100 from 1966-1981, including seven Top 40 hits, five Top 10 hits, and two #1 hits. Here's a list of their Top 40 hits in chronological order:
"Along Comes Mary" (#7 in 1966)
    "Cherish" (#1 in 1966)
    "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" (#35 in 1966)
    "Windy" (#1 in 1967)
"Never My Love" (#2 in 1967)
"Everything That Touches You" (#10 in 1968)
"Time For Livin'" (#39 in 1968)
I recommend listening to all their Top 10 hits. "Cherish" is a classic love song with a rousing final verse. "Windy" is a song written by folk singer Ruthann Friedmann, with some very cryptic lyrics. "Never My Love" is another classic love song, but has a more melancholy tone than "Cherish." "Everything That Touches You" is more uptempo, much like "Along Comes Mary."

It was one of the first pop songs praising Marijuana (1966) The other one being Paul McCartney's song of praise to marijuana ("Got To Get You Into My Life") released the same year. Both made references that sounded like they were referring to a girl, but the girl was actually Marijuana...

This band had a few hits in the 60's, and their harmonies were great. May I suggest looking up the lyrics of the songs? You can find them on the internet. This song is about a guy whose been fooled by women before, and he's wondering if Mary's affections are real. It's not about drugs as some have ASSUMED.

They had an outdoor concert in my town. I sat close to the "Made in Japan" guy who was mixing AND wore a mike. The lead singer joked that their "sound guy" was singing along in the audience with the group on stage, and some day they might even turn his mike on.

Actually, you would have been sitting next to Del Ramos, who was the sound guy and also did backing vocals from his sound board. The guy on stage playing guitar (the "Made in Japan" guy in this video) was his brother Larry Ramos. They were actually Filipino-Hawaiians.

The lyrics are very complex, but you can find then and after reading them a few times you can in fact keep up with the song, The lead singer, Jim Yester didn't initially intend to to sing the song but he was the only one who could remember the complex lyrics well .I am 68 and never really appreciated this song until the last several years. I am going to see them in N.J. at Cape May on july 16th, The Asian guy has passed, his name was Larry Ramos i believe, Jim has got to be about 84?. looking forward to going!

This version does this song no justice! But back then, the studio versions were only 4 tract recordings, but much better than the live versions for the most part.

As far as wanting to know what they are saying, if you cannot find a lyrics video (which I know you often do watch), you can always pull up the lyrics online. Some sites even provide notes and interpretation of the lyrics.

When I was a kid in the 60's, I really liked this song but had no idea what it was about. Then I heard a radio DJ explain that "Mary" was slang for marijuana. I bought a teen magazine that had the complete lyrics and I completely got it, the "psychodramas and the traumas..."

I married Maryjane 5 months after I met her. Been Married for 52 years. It was cool till she had her stroke last year. Now she gets up and yells the cat all morning. I used to smoke all day, now she does and I go right to the whiskey.
