When this album came out, a couple of The Beatles said that they thought it was the greatest album they had ever heard. The Beach Boys are extremely underrated in most circles. They should be listed up there with the greats.

Barbara Ann is their worst song, at least that I've heard. It's so old and dorky sounding, almost as bad as My Generation or Do A Diddy. It's so... Danny Tanner... The other Beach Boys songs are timeless classics, even if they did poach Chuck Berry material.

Interesting thing , Brian Wilson the brains behind this band.. basically stopped performing live with them around the time of this song as he had many emotional problems but still continued controlling the band despite not touring with them anymore.. so they got various other people to add to the group as they toured. (including some famous people ). He did return touring much later on but has always had control. RIP to his 2 brothers Dennis & the angelic voiced Carl, the backbone of this band in their prime.. even though Mike Love was considered the lead vocalist.. This is one of their biggest hits in the 60's of which there was too many to mention... Loved Lex's reaction

This song reminds me of the stat, that people came into puberty in the early 1900s at about 17 or 18, and that's when they could also get a factory job and legally marry. But by the time eve of this song, puberty age had dropped to the lower teens, but getting a job that could support a family had expanded into the twenties with a college degree at least. So basically biology and history conspired to make it very hard for kids to do the right thing for each other

You make an excellent point. This analysis explains a lot. Really appreciated. Society evolves much faster than biology, and if that’s true about the puberty age getting younger, I wonder why that happened. Television/cinema?

I’m 43 now… The Beach Boys are still my favorite band..
fun fact: Brian is deaf of one ear.
His father would beat him so bad that he lost half hearing ability..
Thus, he released Pet Sounds in Mono (he would also try to emulate what was known as the “wall of sound” production philosophy Phil Spector used back in the day)
Paul Mc Cartney acknowledged that the Beatles were always paying attention to Brian’s work and actually, Paul did participate in a recording session for a song called “Vegetables” where you can listen to Paul “chewing celery”… Paul was so curious about Brian and his creative process that he flew to LA to watch it in person..how about that… he also stated that he would play “God only Knows” every morning while driving his daughter to school…

Great to see this bringing such joy to you as it does to me I'm 75 but this takes me back to my teen year growing up in Australia in the 60's surfing all weekend listening to the Beach Boys good times before everything changed. Peace out.

The name Beach boys describes most of their early music. Roll down the windows & crank up the fun, light, summer vibes.

When The Beach Boys were making this album "Pet Sounds", which was Brian Wilson's masterpiece, Paul McCartney came and sat in on the recordings. Later, the Beatles wrote the Sgt. Peppers album. People say that McCartney was inspired by the 'Pet Sounds" album. McCartney later said that when he heard the song "God only knows" from this album that it was the greatest song he had ever heard. Incidentally, when this album was released it received a tepid response from the public. However, in Britain, it was considered one of the finest album ever to be released.
