Saw them sing this in many incarnations of the band, but the original guys, I saw them all sing it with their back up musicians, outdoors in 1978...it was so stunning, the harmonies were more than flawless. Barbara Ann is their worst song, at least that I've heard. It's so old and dorky sounding, almost as bad as My Generation or Do A Diddy. It's so... Danny Tanner... The other Beach Boys songs are timeless classics, even if they did poach Chuck Berry material.

Interesting thing , Brian Wilson the brains behind this band.. basically stopped performing live with them around the time of this song as he had many emotional problems but still continued controlling the band despite not touring with them anymore.. so they got various other people to add to the group as they toured. (including some famous people ). He did return touring much later on but has always had control. RIP to his 2 brothers Dennis & the angelic voiced Carl, the backbone of this band in their prime.. even though Mike Love was considered the lead vocalist.. This song reminds me of the stat, that people came into puberty in the early 1900s at about 17 or 18, and that's when they could also get a factory job and legally marry. But by the time eve of this song, puberty age had dropped to the lower teens, but getting a job that could support a family had expanded into the twenties with a college degree at least. So basically biology and history conspired to make it very hard for kids to do the right thing for each other

I’m 43 now… The Beach Boys are still my favorite band.. fun fact: Brian is deaf of one ear. His father would beat him so bad that he lost half hearing ability.. Thus, he released Pet Sounds in Mono (he would also try to emulate what was known as the “wall of sound” production philosophy Phil Spector used back in the day) Paul Mc Cartney acknowledged that the Beatles were always paying attention to Brian’s work and actually, Paul did participate in a recording session for a song called “Vegetables” where you can listen to Paul “chewing celery”… Paul was so curious about Brian and his creative process that he flew to LA to watch it in person..how about that… he also stated that he would play “God only Knows” every morning while driving his daughter to school…
