Per Songfacts Despite what the title implies, this is not a song about a couple in love. According to Gary Bonner, who wrote the song with Alan Gordon, the song is about unrequited love. Our desperate singer wants the girl to "imagine how the world could be so very fine," proposing what would happen "if I should call you up." The line in the fadeout, "How is the weather?" is when he realizes they will never be more than passing acquaintances, as he resorts to small talk to keep from bursting into tears.
I wrapped a radio to my bike with electrical tape and listened to this song while riding my bike on a beautiful warm day. No worries just happy and innocent. Good memory.
The "person in the gold" is Mark Volman, aka "Flo" of Flo and Eddie fame...Eddie is Howard Kaylan, the lead singer here. The duo now tour as The Turtles with Flo and Eddie. "Happy Together" was a number one hit in the summer of 1967. The group went on to have a few more hits, like "Elanor", "She'd Rather Be With Me", and my personal fav "You Showed Me".
I listened to Flo & Eddie’s FM radio show when I lived in LA for a year back in ‘74/‘75. - KMET had the best programming {{a shiver & a sighhhh}} “K M E T, K M E T, meaty radiooooooooo‼️” was a jingle , I STILL SING IT TO MYSELF. - The whole (1 hour?) FM show consisted of songs that were made up of various song fragments stitched together. Uh huh! So trippy/cool to mEEE!!! And yes, I recommend the Happy Together tours, I’ve seen a couple of them. YOU LEAVE HAPPY!
A week ago today we went to the Happy Together tour concert with remaining and current members of The Turtles, The Cowsills, The Vogues, The Grass Roots, The Association, and Gary Pucket performing their hits from the 60's. The show ended with all groups returning to the stage to sing "Happy Together".
Most people only remember The Turtles for this song, but they had a bunch of great albums. Flo and Eddie, the main two guys, joined Zappa and the Mothers of Invention for a few years after The Turtles broke up. They then embarked on a successful career as a duo and were also two of the most in demand backup singers and appeared on countless hit records. Hilarious guys too, pretty much everything they did was tongue in cheek, they never took themselves too seriously despite their huge talent.
I love it when Lex suddenly recognizes a song! She's so bouncy and happy! What a treat. And while I'm at it, Brad has loosened up so much in the last year. Glad to see that. I'm sorta like him in a few ways and it's great to watch him open up a little more, it reminds me of me when I was younger. I'm 60, so that's a long time ago 🙂
Bravo, Brad. Soundtracks of children's movies often have songs from the years that BOTH the parents and the grandparents were kids. They want to take the adults back in time, emotionally. And it works!
This song always reminds me of my father. He was a musician, band leader, and church music director, and when i was little, he used to sing this song a lot and play the vinyl record in our living room.
"Elenore" is a super tune and contains perhaps the greatest lyric in rock & roll history: "Elenore, gee, I think you're swell, And you really do me well, You're my pride and joy, et cetera" Mark Volman and Howard Kaylen later re-emerged as studio musicians and worked as the duo "Flo & Eddie", notably doing vocal work for Frank Zappa.
I love the lyric you mention from Elenore. What a great song! I used to have a Turtles greatest hits album that was wonderful listening. Definitely do some more Turtles tunes!
Founding members of The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, aka Flo & Eddie, sang backing vocals on the 1971 T. Rex classic "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" as well as on Bruce Springsteen's 1980 top ten hit "Hungry Heart". They also composed the musical scores for Strawberry Shortcake and The Care Bears animated television shows.
Long history with the 2 main guys in this group , basically the clowning you saw in the vid were their persona and besides numerous other hits as The Turtles , they went on to much more far out weirder things as the years passed (with Zappa and as a duo ) but also as background singers on numerous famous artists songs, rock producers and radio hosts. This song is iconic. Loved your reaction
You're so right about content aimed at adults in kids' movies. Some movies even work well for children, parents, & grandparents - - for example, Paddington and Paddington 2.
I've heard the song my entire life and I never get tired of it for some reason. It's just such a nice triumphant song. And I think it works that way because the verses are in a minor key, almost like it's going to be sad, but then it's triumphant when it gets to the chorus and it's just so catchy.
Walked into a bar in Vail, Colorado, Christmas time about 1972 and who was playing but The Turtles! Next time I saw them was with Frank Zappa as Flo & Eddie. Quite the contrast! BTW, Dance To the Music is by Sly and the Family Stone. They have several songs worth checking out, including a live performance at Woodstock.
Depending on whose chart you're looking at, this was the #1, #2, or #3 song of 1967. In any case, it ws a huge #1 hit on the weekly top 40. One of my personal favorites from this era. The Turtles are rarely discussed as one of the great groups of the '60s, but they were. And they were an American group in an era that was dominated by groups that were part of the British Invasion. This was, by far, their biggest hit. But they had several other really good ones. Like... "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Baby," "It Ain't Me Babe," "Eleanore," and "You Showed Me."
When you're watching movies with your kids or grandkids the soundtrack is more likely to have Happy Together or I'm A Believer than anything from today. Music from the 60's and 70's was often happy, free, and sometimes a bit silly... perfect for a kids movie.
Wow. When this song popped up, I looked it up on Wiki. I grew up hearing this song but I never paid attention to the lyrics. I never realized it was about unrequited love. 3 years ago, I went to a 60s rock tribute or review-type concert that was headlined by The Turtles. As it turned out, a girl I had a major crush on showed up as well.. After that experience and now knowing what the song is about.. 😮🤯
This is part of my life soundtrack from the 60's...omg I loved this song. it was on the radio so much.... It was so romantic to we little teens..we loved the Turtles....part of the British Invasion.
This was a huge hit and they followed it with other big upbeat earworm hits, She'd Rather Be With Me, Eleanor, and She's My Girl. They were a fun group with a sense of humor ("How is the weather?"). Then they had a beautiful slow hit, You Showed Me.
I've watched tons of your videos. Lex is always so happy and joyful and Brad is such a serious listener. But I saw Brad start smiling early on in this song! So adorable. Beautiful couple.
Proposed to my wife 35 years ago listening to this song. We were coming back from Panama city and this song came on. Pulled over and Proposed. Still think about that every time I hear this song. Thanks for playing it.
The lead singer Howard Kaylan is a great friend of mine and we've been friends on social media for over 10 years. When I met him backstage at a concert in 2017 it was exactly 50 years after he met The Beatles, Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix all on the same night in 1967. Then by the end of the concert.. I ended up being on stage with him and some of the other acts, singing this song ☮️
This song has been in quite a few movies in the years since its release. To give you an idea of how much this songs has secured its place in music history (from Wikipedia): "Due to its subsequent popularity, in 1999, BMI named "Happy Together", with approximately five million performances on American radio, the 44th most-performed song in the United States of the 20th century,[6] placing it in the same league as "Yesterday" by the Beatles and "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel. And, in 2007, it was inducted on the Grammy Hall of Fame.[7]" Wikipedia is missing some from their list of this song's appearances in other media, probably due to it being different versions or something. You mentioned Shrek. It was also in Earnest Goes To Camp (1987), which was when I first heard it as a kid.
Brad, "Dance to the Music" is another great '60s hit from Sly & the Family Stone. Y'all may have done some of their music, but they have a big catalog of fun dance music from the '60s.
There is a funny movie from 2003, "My Dinner with Jimi", based on the memoirs of one of the Turtles, Howard Kaylan. Lots of bands are represented with look-a-likes for the Doors, the Beatles, Frank Zappa, etc. Gives a great vibe of the late 60s in LA and London. The title refers to meeting Jimi Hendrix which had to be one of the most embarrassing moments in the life of one of the Turtles.
For me I was a grand parent when Shrek movies were out , so most of the songs in the movie were from my early teen days. My first grandchild was born while I was in the Gulf War in 1991

I always thought movie -producers thought they could get away with putting in an old, but already written, song the kids would not know, as it was brand new to them. (The parent's might be "in on the joke", if they were watching at all.) They did the same with the voices of kid's cartoon characters--often based on actors who weren't even alive!
I used to think this song was about a little girl that had a teddy bear named Happy. And one day Happy got ripped open and the little girl was so sad, she cried. Her mother said to her, "Don't cry sweetie, I will Sew Happy Together."

The Turtles were glorious, and hilarious performing as Flo and Eddie singing with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
Bass player, and singer, Jim Pons also joined the Mothers of Invention.

@@Salve01 Flo and Eddie also went on to sing backing vocals with T-Rex.
Oh yes Flo and Eddie wow they were hilarious and great background singers in Frank Zappa and then we’re really A crack up
... and at least one of them made an indelible impression by playing herod in "jesus christ superstar."
Honestly, Frank's band with Flo and Eddie doing this at the end of The Mud Shark was way better.
and the lead singer and the guy in the yellow shirt and glasses still perform together as Flo and Eddie. they were here a few years ago, so much fun
This was the time of the first pirate radios, we were listening in secret under the pillow!

The Turtles always seem to be having fun... especially Mark Volman (the guy holding the tuba)
My first concert in April, 1973 was the Alice Cooper "Billion Dollar Babies" tour, with Flo and Eddie opening.

"Dance to the Music" was Sly and the Family Stone -- another great song from that era.

This is LIVE!!!!!!
This is a truly genuine and authentic performance.

" Dance to the Music " is SLY & THE FAMILY STONE
I believe they were lip-syncing, which explains the shenanigans.
This song always reminds me of my father. He was a musician, band leader, and church music director, and when i was little, he used to sing this song a lot and play the vinyl record in our living room.
I love hearing these great oldies on reaction channels! Keeps memories of good times happening!
I saw these guys mid '80s. Most bands smash the drum kit at the end of the concert, but these guys...they did it after the FIRST song!

They were intentionally trying to make a “bad” song and satirizing *themselves*! They had too much talent to pull it off though.

She looks so happy....❤❤❤
This was the number one song on the radio the week my baby sister was born. After all these years it’s still our theme song. Love it.
I would imagine the reason this kind of music is used in contemporary movies is that it's classic, (reasonably) well-known, happy music.
Love this song! Brings back great childhood memories!❤️
The theme song of my early childhood as far as I can remember. ♥️
This just put the biggest smile on my face.
