Yes this is a rare anime upload, I've finally become shameless in being a weeb. I promise the next video will be about fun video game trivia. I made this because the hype around Netflix’s One Piece series, as well as the 1000th anime episode, seemingly got a lot of people interested in the series. But I took too long and the hype has died down quite a bit, oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
On the off chance you’ve discovered my channel because of this video, sadly this is not my main style of content. But I can and *will* make another One Piece video in the future, maybe when the series is over or something like that. Though if you see somebody who’s thinking of giving this series a shot, I hope you send them here!

Oh man! I was hoping you'd make another One Piece video since I saw that one you did on Blueno. Would love to see another one sometime. Maybe a character analysis, or focus on an arc that is infamous for whichever reason? I really like the series but can't stand most youtubers' dissections...you seem aware of how you come off and don't take yourself nor the content too seriously. A++ dude

My favorite part of One Piece was the heartbreaking scene where Zoro realizes that Sanji deleted Flappy Bird off his phone and will never be able to get it back again. Really sad scene that perfectly ties into both of their character arcs.
I'm saving watching One Piece for when I'm down real bad.
Reading it is a lot faster and the art is a lot more consistent.

But for real, One Piece's length is actually one of my favourite parts about it. When I was first getting into it, it was awesome because if I had absolutely nothing to do, I'd just default to One Piece because "shit, might as well" and then crank out like 12 hours. No waiting for a new season, no spending time searching for some new kino to watch, just sinking into my chair watching some of the most likeable characters of all time doing cool pirate shit.
To be honest, I'm kind of afraid to fully catch up because of that feeling of "well... now what?" while waiting for a new episode to drop. One Piece is always there for me when I have nothing to do, and that kicks ass.
Sounds like alot of wasted time and potential to me. Or you could have watched 100+ better animes in that span of time. Your scope is limited.

@@MishKoz They're are great long animes that don't need to tell their story endlessly. Are they even still hunting down the one piece? I heard its metaphorical crap, what a blue ball of a series if that's the case lmao. I could just go watch OG Dragonball or Hokuto No Ken if I wanted to watch a heros journey that actually has meaning. I genuinely don't see the point besides succumbing to Stockholm syndrome.

Honestly this is such a good video to get people in to one piece. Now is probably the best time to start because it’s in its final saga and this video does a really good job teaching people how to get into it. Really great job 👍
I was planning on getting into One Piece at some point this year, so the timing of this video couldn't have been better for me.
Very nice and informative! I had no clue that One Pace was even a thing before watching this, so I might give it a go once I get caught up in the manga.
One Pace is a fair bit behind the manga, so when you get caught up it'll be stuff you've already seen in the manga first. But One Piece is always worth a rewatch anyway

watched this before watching one piece (not mainly bc of this video) and it was indeed one of the greatest human creations. caught up now, watched the uncut subbed anime with nothing skipped outside of recaps and then read the manga when i ran out of anime. i feel like something worth noting is that in later anime episodes they do add stuff that i would say makes use of the added time, like making fights that were offscreened in the manga happen or adding musical sections. some arcs don't do this (reverie & dressrosa were painful at points) but i would genuinely say that whole cake and wano are better in the anime if you're willing to give the time investment
This was a great video. I have a friend who is always trying to convince me to watch One Piece but yeah, the sheer amount of episodes always put me off. You've helped to convince me to give it a go.

A couple of notes about the anime you didn't touch on; the English dub has been usually a good 200 or so episodes behind the Japanese original for a good while (and there were points where the dub was on haitus even up to a couple years, though COVID certainly sped things up), and Toei and Funimation have different ways they split the series up into seasons (Toei appears to use actual production seasons, while Funi tends to split them in which arcs they contain)
I did cut one line in the script that said:
"In terms of content the dub has covered, they’ve done most of the series, but for more recent stuff they’re still behind the Japanese version, which is to be expected. But if you’re just starting out, then you won’t have to worry about running out of episodes for a pretty long time."
But the recording of that line sucked and I was like "eh, that's probably obvious enough" lol
I did not know about Toei and Funi dividing the series by seasons in their own way though

you are the first person that i heard talk about most of one piece beeing filler, i did not knew that before and nobody mentions it, i wonder why there is not a list of episodes to skip though
There are filler lists out there (just google "one piece filler guide"). But the problem is that they have episodes that _are_ canon, but they're just really stretched out. And it's a lot harder to skip the padding when there's no clear demarcation as to when the padding starts/stops. That's why One Pace is such a good way to watch lol
Considering I just started reading One Piece like two days I was very surprised to see this show up

I will say that "nakama" in the japanese version of One Piece is a very noticable use of that specific word, but it really has nothing to do with the word being some absolutely untranslatable concept unique to the Japanese language. It's most likely used so much because;
1. The Idea of "friendship and teamwork conquers all" in Shonen Jump manga is basically like "saving the day" for super hero comics. It is ingrained in the very DNA of these types of stories to emphasis heavily on friends or "nakama."
2. Luffy being a somewhat naive and simple person thinks of getting the people nogether nessecary to run a pirate ships not as "co-workers", "subodrinates" or "ship members" but "friends" and "buddys". It is consistent with his character to refer to his crew mates as "nakama".
3. The word "crew" in english has no obvious counterpart in Japanese. There IS basically the idea of a crew in One Piece, but it is by being "friends" (nakama) that they come together, not nessecarilly as people coming together as "shipmates" or any word in Japanese that could translated as the more technical meaning of a crew.
It was probably the last reason that would make one choose to leave "nakama" untranslated but that is just sloppy translation in my opinion. A translation that ends up keeping words as is from the original language does have its uses and charms. Dragon ball wouldn't be the same without "Chi" and a good dose of "-san"s, "-kun"s, "-chan"s and "sensei"s and "senpai"s adds the uniqueness of a given anime and manga. That being said, keeping "nakama" untranslated is a poor decision because it neither repersents a unique concept that is hard to put into English nor does it actually contribute to the atmosphere of One Piece's style. All it does is put up an unnessecary barrier to entrythat adds nothing in terms of accuracy to the source material or charm.

Man I used to watch One Piece as a kid when they aired it on TV, IIRC I stopped at the Skytopia arc because the Spanish dub had only been made up to that point yet. I wanna get into it but honestly for me watching any form of episodic content on not-so-legal websites is a chore, what with all the ads and everything. Am I missing out on that much if I only read the manga?
Reading the manga is totally valid. It's the way the author originally intended people to experience the series, so you won't miss out on anything at all.

someone linked this one to me, but I don't know if it's been covered yet. I can't lie, the entries I know about are super interesting, but again, way too big of a video for a dumbass like me to make without getting tons of stuff wrong lol
You could've mentioned two more things:
1)There is no official English version of the digitally colored manga, so you'll have to rely on fansubs. There are fan projects that try to insert the official Viz translation, but they're in development hell.
2) The anime is noticeably censored from the manga. If that bothers you, it might influence your decision on whether to read or watch the series.
I just started One Piece, I didn't know about the fluff they put into episodes so I'm glad I watched this video

I originally tried getting into a while back, but recently I tried watching again because my friends were excited about the live action. After I got to the Arlong Park walk, i knew the chances of me watching anything else for the foreseeable future was over.

For me the problem with the OP manga wasn't that it's too long, it was that the scanlation groups changed from time to time which means the quality fluctuated quite a bit. Well, that was fine until I got to chapters that were absolutely awful quality, literally an unreadable pixelated mess. They were probably made in late 90's and early 00's using crappy printers and editing soft then never updated since, there were dozens of them affecting large chunks of the story at different points and arcs. I looked on every single manga hosting site at the time and they all had the same scans with random batches of bad quality chapters. This is the reason I dropped OP when I tried getting into the manga some 8 years ago, the scans were too inconsistent. Probably wouldn't have started reading it in the first place if I knew this would be an issue later, the quality was overall pretty decent for the first 150-ish chapters (I think?).
I remember being utterly baffled at how the fandom of the single best selling manga is too lazy to ensure that the entire scanlation is up to snuff, in 20-bloody-14, when *everyone* is using internet and high quality scans of raws are likely easily available by this point.. This is the kind of inactivity and lack of care you'd expect from, I dunno, the JoJo fandom in late 00's which gave us the infamous Duwang scanlation as well as the most popular part remaining in very subpar quality for the longest time. But I certainly didn't expect it from the One Piece fandom in mid-2010s.
That sounds rough, but it's not really the fans' job to do that, is it? Like with free anime/manga sites you kinda get what you pay for in that regard lol. Though I will say, when I caught up on the manga this year, as well as when I went back to read older chapters, I never encountered any of that on the sites I used, so I guess it _has_ gotten better since then.

I read the manga to make it quicker and tp avoid the fillers but it still took me a long time to finish it all
I can say that for now its my favorite manga/anime ip and im kinda glad i started to read it after the previous arc ended as it gave a sense of finality to it even if it hasnt truly ended
