  • Little bit late getting the herd test done but this should help as we are going to have to make some tough decisions soon regarding the drought!
    These samples collected will tell us a lot about how each cow is producing

    Andrew I just found your channel a few weeks ago and subscribed. I live/farm in North-East Iowa, in the US. Here the breed split is very definite, with Holsteins making up 90 % of the US herd numbers. With Jerseys making up just under 8%. The average daily production for Jerseys here is 10-12 liters. Holsteins average in the mid 20 liter range here. Both of these are on TMR rations with very limited grazing on average. In my area the land values keep pasture operations small. Crop land here is selling for $20K US per acre right now. Crop ground rents can hit $500 per acre per year here. Also weather makes a huge difference, we just came off a week of sub zero weather with nightly lows hitting -30 C last Wed. So cattle in general need to be housed inside during the winter.
    We milked until I was in my mid twenties (1980s). So I know in general, what goes into milking. How your able to make your operation work with milking just once each day fascinates me. I am guessing it a lower production that works because of lower feed, equipment and labor costs. Here just about everyone milks three times each day with a lot of smaller producers going to robots. So in theory the US normal is many milkings per day. The opposite of your model.
    I really enjoy weeing how farming differs around the world. I know I will never get to see your great country so I have to 'enjoy" it through your videos. For this I am Thankful to you for making them.

      Hey and thanks for watching i really appreciate it.
      We have a low input low output system which seems to work for us pretty well, OAD milking is also great for animal health and lifestyle. Jerseys adapt to it really well too
      That’s sounds really expensive to me!
      I did a harvest run through the mid west in 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed my time over there, it’s such a stark contrast to NZ which was awesome to see 👌👍

    Good video again Andrew 👍, hope you get the rain soon. It's getting like a desert there with you. Is all of New Zealand in drought at the moment?. It's expensive supplementing cows in that weather but what can you do. You have to feed them at all cost.

      I think we are probably the worst at the moment but there are other dry places, and some people are having a great year so a bit patchy.

    Hi Andrew, im amazed that you are able to milk 300 cows with only 2 people. We have 3 milkers in the pit with acr's and a herdsman to bring cows into parlour. Crazy.
    Hope you get a nice shower of rain soon.

      300 should be easy enough with 1 person even without acr, just need a decent setup shed 26 a side is manageable with 1 person

      Yep if I had ACRs and a bigger shed like a 28 or 30 I’d do it by my self pretty much. We usually say 200 cows to 1 labour unit roughly

    I send you some rain from England for your grass and crops.
    Some questions with regards to milking. How long does it take for one of your cows to be milked?
    Also what is your average volume of milk does your beautiful Jersey cows produce. I know they produce higher butter fat than hoisten cows.
    I seen that more farmers in America are cross breeding the 2 cattle breeds, as they are trying to produce smaller cattle so less amount of.feed is needed but also trying to keep a higher milk output.
    What's your opinion of cross breeding?

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would be good if you could 😂
      Depends on what part of the season it is but at the moment not very long at all, 5 mins maybe. They produced 320kgMS last season
      Yep we call a freisian x jersey a kiwi cross and they milk pretty well too, it’s just what ever your preference is really and what suits you best, everyone’s different 👍

    Hi, Andrew, is was interested in the way you were taking milk samples, do you milk record so you know what each cow gives in a lactation? As over here in the UK, we milk recoded monthly. Regards Jon Bloomfied

    • @Departmentofnaturalresources
      @Departmentofnaturalresources 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those metres take a percentage of what the girls do in a milking then the samples go and get tested so you get back results of her average production the milk protein and fats and cell count so you know if she has mastitis the test helps you judge for at the end of the season what girls are under preforming and who keeps a high cell count for culling (I’m a dairy farmer in the South Island)

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do monthly here as well and some high producers probably do, but we really only use it to measure their cell count and can get away with just the 3 tests

  • @mattjurd

    Is this whole process almost automated in a modern shed with EID readers? Only thing to do would be to connect the sample cups or can that be built into the system as well?

    • @NZFarmboy80
      @NZFarmboy80 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can get milk meters built into cup removers that record somatic cell count, litres and fat/protein content of the milk, I had them on the last farm that I managed they were fantastic, no need for herd testing

    Do you just have 3 people total when you milk? Which herd is yours and Jerseys are such a calm animal? I may have missed it but is it a dairy organization that tests the milk or is a personal test for you? Here dairy organizations take a morning and night sample like quarterly with their personnel. I hope you do not mind my many questions.

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No we generally only milk with one, it’s just easier at herd testing with a couple more.
      I don’t own any part of the farm it’s all dads I just manage one of the herds.
      Personal test for us mainly to see the SCC of each animal, the tanker takes a sample at each Pick up to test the quality of the milk tho but that’s a bulk test
