    I nave been binge-watching your videos, and recalling visiting my cousin’s dairy farm just south of Bogota in 1950. At that time, I had my drink of milk. It ran over a “refrigerated washboard,” so your outstanding videos really bring back happy memories. Thanks for that, Jan!

    That's pretty slick having the tester in the basement. When I was farming in the late 80s and 90s we had the tester right in the parlor with us and even though he was there every month it still freaked the cows out. They would be very nervous and crap like crazy. But I still miss the days of farming. BTY really enjoy your videos. You seem like a very hard working and respectful young man. God bless you and your family.

    Great to have a video from you this afternoon and a special treat to have your Mom aboard. And this video was jam packed with stuff to learn. Always amazed at what you have to do to provide us milk. No wonder you are so big and strong with all the fresh milk you drink. Thanks loads for a super great video.

    Until this tragic pandemic struck I never appreciated the hard work of my parents. A nurse and farmer/trucker. I’d give anything to bring them back and to thank them from my heart. Much gratitude to you Jan and your family for all of the long days and back breaking work you do to provide for others. Kind regards to everyone out there working and providing for your families and communities. Ontario 🇨🇦

    A very good herd management tool. My dad and I were certified through the US dept of Agriculture to assist our local dairy operations. The current program is much more comprehensive than what we had in the 60’s and 70’s.

      I suppose now cows that don't meet target volume or quality goals get culled. It looks like modern farming is much more scientific to help keep costs down.

    Wow! We didn’t do that back in the day. Individual testing, huh, my dad was the tester if he thought their was a problem with a cow. We also didn’t milk 299 cows. That’s a lot. We did 30-70. Summer work did more since no school. Winter we did lower numbers. Daddy sold off the dairy in 1973. Thanks for sharing. It was fascinating.

    Can't drink milk alone anymore. Chocolate, I can. Ice Cream - no problem. Straight as a drink, no-go for me. My dad (who was also a sask dutch kid) laid off milk in his late 40's too and stuck to making cheese :) Good show SDK - nice showing the whole process there on testing and automation.

    FYI: I watched till the end.
    QUESTION Please:
    After obtaining the results of the cow’s milk, what do you differently to/for the cows to improve or change the milk output quality?

    • @trevornutcher8607
      @trevornutcher8607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also a dairyman in California. Lots of info from the test. The test info regarding somatic cell count (scc) tells a count of white blood cells in the milk. Cows that have under 200 scc show a very health mammary system. Anything over 200 is a cow that might have a subclinical or clinical case of mastitis, or a case starting. We can find those cows and separate them, then culture a sample of her milk to find out if she does have an infection, and treat accordingly. Mastitis is just inflammation of the mammary gland, something common in breastfeeding mothers. But when it does happen, it can be uncomfortable for the cow, and results in less milk produced. Can be caused from improper or incomplete milking, dirty conditions, or cows that have suppressed immune system for some other reason.
      Protien and fat% in the milk lets us know how our cows are converting their feed into milk, and can be used to make sure the nutrition program is adequate. Most cows have a nutritionist formulating every bite of food she eats for her entire life.
      We also don't have meters for daily weights, so we use the test day weights to see the amount of milk produced by each cow. This we use for health checks, breeding decisions, dry off and cull decisions.
      Great video by the way! Very nice facility and cows look great. Good job explaining!

    Hey!!. . .What? No word to prove I watched it all?!!! Well I did. 😁 Glad to see your Mom featured in today's vid. I noticed Donna talking about shaking the bottle because of the mix of fat. Of course, fat always rises to the top. But it makes me wonder, hmmm. . .I never hear you guys talking about the cream from the milk. I guess that's because you don't deal that much with the actual milk product since it is stored and shipped away daily?? Any word about cream from the milk?? Thanks Jan. You are so good and resourceful to keep informative topics coming our way. Oh, almost forgot. . .great milk mustache!. . .that proves it. . .you've "Got Milk?"!!!

    I was a milk recorder for about 15+- years when younger, it was very interesting to see how much things has changed with sampling in the ‘basement’ and more computer information, when I did it up to 2006, you had to visit farm in the evening and next morning to get both samples and milk weight. Jan, do you now in Canada just sample once at the evening milking for all Infomation and milk yield to predict the months yield ? I really enjoy your videos, one of the best on TH-cam, 👍👍👍👍
