- First store lamb sale !! Good or bad trade ???? Sheila learning the ropes at 12 days old
Hello 👋
Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm
This is Sam and Oliver plus 4 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.
We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.
We are both from farming backgrounds. I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15. We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to where we are now. We took on a 500-acre hill farm in 2019, currently 5 years into the tenancy.
Also, here to show people women can be useful in the agricultural world.😉😁

Mind them well and hug and kiss them every day Sam, I buried my 44 year old daughter last week. She battled cancer for five years. Too young. She had a good husband and three wonderful children. I'm just so so so so devastated 💔

@@garymadden2656 thankyou 😄😄
absolutely great not a grimace in sight 12 days after a c section. glad you got some cash for the lambs to put you on, you deal with so much so hardly a scatter brain heres to a few months of great weather. get the sunday video on early ha ha
@ianunwin might cover the DD🤣🤣 wet hear 🤣🤣 hopefully we have a summer ! I will try 🤣🤣 I get kids teas ready n Start but will try get them up sooner 🤣🤣
Hay making has changed so much. Dad made haystacks with loose hay before the war. Had to be careful during the war because the Germans had put anti glider defences in his field which were wires strung between telephone poles connected to big French artillery shells. He had to be careful not to catch them on the top of the load. I was in the time of small bales and I can remember haymaking with horses.
@oldfarmhorace1 ah wow love going back in time. I hear loads of stories from my grandma aswell 😃😃
Practical and awesome at the same time Sam and you on that tractor hood, 12 days after giving birth 😮 ❤ I believe the sign is not straight 😂 but who cares, it’s on.
@user-ix8cy7yn4l hahaha 🤣🤣 dam it 😆 looks to small in my eyes 🤣 need a massive one.
Where can I get a sam shutt window sticker from, for me tw10 😂😂
🤣🤣 I will have to make some to sell 🤣🤣
Great video ,Sheila is a lovley quiet baby you are so lucky, great price for the lambs, what weight were they they looked to be cracking lambs.you take care you are back working as hard as ever.
@nicholascummins4430 we don't have any scales and they don't weigh store lambs but my guess would be around 30-35kg. I've had plenty time off 🤣🤣
Sounds, movement are all good for the baby ! Sad u feel u have to explain. Farm kids usually grow up wise , full of adventure and strong ;-) Been nice to see oliver being nicer makes a big difference to the videos.
@ashleyritchie4948 he's hardly in them🤣 but when he is, he isn't bad. Well, breaking the law arnt I, but what can I do..... 🤣 I want to change the law on that
Great store auction for you at Benthams
As I’ve said in previous videos
You breed them, feed them clip them, water them make sure they are healthy
🐑
And when we eat them they are tasty
A nice lamb Shank with peas, beens roast potatoes and plenty of mint sauce etc
Sheila is contented ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@joanne26 yes absolutely best tasting lamb there is 😍 someone will take these on and fatten them slightly then sell into the food chain I would of thought.
Sam this is with respect you so remind me of my partner who I lost in march hard times at the moment but talking through it please try and remember also lady problems it's just not us
@DavidGadsby-e6s sorry to hear that hope your okay 👍
Grear prices, but nice looking stores.
Lamb price seems cheap compared to lincolnshire. Love the videos thank you
@timlane831 cheap! ?? Oh ok. This is the first store lamb sale not sure what they weighed prob around the 30-35kg mark
You are a wonderful Lady Sam, how old is the baby now ? She is absolutely gorgeous God bless her. And you, you are just an excellent Mum 👏 👌 👍.
@gerryoconnor8751 awh thankyou!! She's 2 weeks old today ( Thursday) she's a darling
Not a bad price for your first lot of lambs. 👍
@kevinturner2455 no good price I would say !
How is she❤❤❤
👍
Can we have videos earlier please for a bit of bedtime viewing 😂😂
u got a good price for the lambs .........do they weigh them in the mart ?
not too many marts here would give you credit for stock ........they all have been burnt too often .....
were there any fat lambs at the sale ?........what were they making. ?
factories have pulled the heart out of the lamb price here over the last few weeks down to 7.30 euro now .....same as last year ...store lambs sale have not started here yet as such ........ no grass any where at the moment .......too dry and harsh , rained yesterday all day but you would not know it tonight , cold also 10 c at 10 pm
I'd you can let us know the weight sex and price of both stores and factory in the future it would be much appreciated .at the moment in the rep Ireland our processors has pulled factory lambs 42 euro in the space of a month . And it's not because of the number coming out .there's 70 k.springs killed less that this time last year. And with the said it's going to pull the price of stores back. Processors are putting sheep farmers out of business eighter cutting back on the size of breeding ewes or out altogether in on farmers lips.
@georgedoorley5628 not sure what they weigh as they don't weigh store lambs. Iam guessing around the 30kg mark. Fat lamb sales are a Wednesday night on bentham auction live stream on youtube if you fancy watching that ? Prob catch it next week now. Fat price has dropped £30 they have been on fire for weeks . Up to £180 a lamb
Good looking lambs are they of texel tup
@@stuartrobertson4714 they are tex Dale ewes with a beltex tup.
How times change farm safety inspector took me to court and they fined me a thousand pounds for having the children in cab 30yrs ago
sorry Jim you'll have to wait til you're a bit older: I always wanted to be one of those cool people in the ring. You could put a camera in the market all day and I'd watch it!
@jorgehurford1742 I usually sell lambs and leave cattle to the boys but can't film unless get someone to film for me 🤣 I love it . Trying to get best price
Fab again Sam a good price at Bentham for lambs and Shiela is coming on a treat she will be driving a tractor before she can even walk at this rate 😂
@michaelhartley9450 hopefully 🙏 🤣 oldest 2 can 😉 thankyou 😁
forgive my ignorance but if babies name is Sheila why do you call her Sheena at times or is it my hearing?😄n
@charlesta654 I call her sheena I have nick names for them all. Mabel is mabes lilly is lilly pot. Nancy is noodle Jim is Jim 🤣 and Sheila is sheena depends what mood iam in 🤣🤣
@@Sam-shutt fair enough..loving the videos gal...keep it up...
@@charlesta654 wahoo thanks!
We need some lives defo
@SSFARMNG would love to but no signal on farm ! 😢
@@Sam-shutt I no that feeling frustrating
Get on
What weight were the lambs? That was a good price for store lambs
@shanecroke7682 not sure we don't have any scales but iam guessing around the 30kg mark
Why does Oliver need the stick ?
Jimmy and Nancy will get in the ring soon enough...if that's permitted by the auctioneer.
@jimmyjohnstone5878 it's his lucky selling stick as u can see he has it for everything he sells there aloud in but he was under pressure not knowing price they make so maybe next time 😅
one of the other youtubers said the other day 'oh children aren't aloud in the tractor cab until there 13'........i pressume they meant 13 days old not 13 years old🤣🤣. looks like decent trade for sheep but then we need every penny don't we
@geraldbeard856 🤣🤣 my book it's 13 days old and if someone reports me cos I break the law so be it. I will get the law changed 🤣 yes but you want them up there. Fat price will go up again no dougt.
@@Sam-shutt i was riding around in the tractor cab with my dad many years ago when tractor cabs were far less safe and secure and quiet as they are nowadays way before i was 13 infact i was driving the tractors myself way before i was 13
@geraldbeard856 best way !! They Learn fast and have to think for themselves
i think the law is they are not allowed to drive the tractor up to the age over 13.someone correct me if im wrong??
@charlesta654 no not aloud any passenger under age of 13
And on a quad bike you have to be 16 🙄
I Dont care what people say kids are far more safer in the tractor cab where you can see them than in the farm yard where you can't see them especially with these big tractors about.
@abbiejones1843 absolutely I want the law changed on this
hi sam I don't like the way your unhappy husband Oliver hitting the lambs with a stick it'd not on some one may hit him with a stick see iff he likes it
man child ........end of story ..!
@johndaniell887 he's happy 😊 have to keep the lambs moving somehow. He uses his selling stick every auction sale
hes not hitting them hes tapping them theres a big difference.if you dont like to see farming life as it is stick to countryfile
👍
