  • Early calves....It's always bound to happen, and luckily 2/3 of them are heifer calves which will become replacements in the future.

    Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
    Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

    Doesn't look like that older one is dropping all her milk . That wasn't much. When my jersey freshened she was making 5.5 gallons to 6.5 gallons a day. She is 14 months since she calfed and she is making 3.5 gallons one milking now . It sucks hand milking 3 gallons a day . She had a beautiful heifer this year. I wish the guys bull I used was still available he made a nice heifer. And he always threw bull calfs for his owners I think that's why he got rid of him. Can't wait to see how this jersey Angus cross comes out. Those calfs are so cute I love jersey cows.

    Good luck with calving! I do have a question for you - Why wood chips? Is there a benefit to keeping calves on woodchips? I've seen aspen bedding (in US) and straw done in a deep pack method but never the type of chips you seem to use. Is there a cost benefit or a benefit to the calves?

    • @mikeysole
      @mikeysole 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kia ora Leslie :)
      I'm just a vet student, so don't take my word as gospel, but wood chips are usually fairly free draining, and retain warmth more than say river stones.
      Sometimes calves may also be inclined to have a nibble on things like hay or straw, which could lead to increased disease transmission.
      Lastly chips can also then be applied to pastures or composted, to hopefully boost grass growth in following seasons.
      It is relatively more expensive than some other substrates, but old mate Andy surely has a mate on the inside :P

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that’s pretty spot on Michael, but also because NZ isn’t a very big grain growing or arable country we don’t have a lot of straw around so it would probably be pretty pricy,
      But also wood chip is very free draining and we find it works pretty well, hope that explains it 👍
      I could get sawdust which a lot of people use from my local contractor but it packs down to hard on concrete where the big chip doesn’t 👌

    Andrew what breed is the black and white cow? Is the drench a calcium drench? I bet you feel the down time of not milking went fast. It sure has for me. Thank you, Dale

    • @TheOnceADayFarmer
      @TheOnceADayFarmer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She’s a jersey, but I would think that somewhere down her breeding there would have been a bit of Ayrshire in there somewhere 👍
      And yep calcium, magnesium and trace minerals. Also a bit of apple cider vinegar 👌
