  • The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics are in the news because of updated International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules for transgender athletes. Many outlets are claiming the new policy bans trans athletes, but that's not technically correct. I'll walk through it and discuss it's possible impact on women's sports. But first, how did we get here?
Since 2003, trans athletes have been allowed to compete in the Olympics. Back then, they were required to have a full sex reassignment surgery. This led to Kristen Worley, a transgender cyclist, famously filing a lawsuit with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. Other activists joined in, and the 2015 IOC trans athlete policy was released.
    2015 Policy
    1. Female to male athletes are allowed to compete with men without restriction.
    2. Male to female athletes must:
    a. Declare their gender identity as female (this cannot be changed for sporting purposes for a minimum of 4 years).
    b. Demonstrate that their total testosterone level in serum has been below 10 nmols/L for at least 12 months prior to competition.
    c. Testosterone level must remain below 10 nmol/L throughout period of desired eligibility to compete. If they refuse to test, eligibility for female competition is suspended for 12 months.
For perspective, men usually fall between 10 to 35 nmol/L, and women .5 to 2.4 nmol/L. Under this policy, a male athlete could train their entire life, declare a female gender identity, and compete with women after 1 year of hormone therapy, with test levels still 4x higher than the average woman.
This had wide-ranging effects at all levels of female competition. If the top athletic organizations in the world allowed trans athletes, how could colleges and high schools ban them? CeCé Telfer and Lia Thomas are two notable transgender athletes who became NCAA champions. Numerous high school boys also declared a female gender identity to become more competitive.
Many girls felt unsafe and afraid to speak out because of these policies. There are stories of girls who were told that if they complained, they’d be kicked off their teams or lose their scholarships. They also risked being labeled "transphobic."
This led to the 2021 IOC transgender policy that's now in effect. In short, the IOC is allowing each sporting body to create their own trans athlete policy. Here are the recognized International Sports Federations for reference: olympics.com/ioc/internationa...
2021 Policy by sport (as of April, 2024)
Track and Field | Swimming | Cycling
    1. Must declare female as gender identity.
    2. Cannot have experienced any part of male puberty either beyond Tanner Stage 2 or after age 12.
    3. After puberty, must maintain testosterone levels below 2.5 nmol/L for as long as they would like to remain eligible.
    Gymnastics
    - No current policy, but there is a Gender Equality Commission whose work is, "primarily based on the binary notion of gender and therefore focuses on empowering women and girls in the sport of gymnastics.”
    Soccer
    - No new policy, but they do currently allow trans athletes.
    Volleyball
    1. A player may change gender one time for purposes of eligibility, and must pass a review by a Gender Eligibility Committee agreeing that they will have no competitive advantage. They’ll look at the nature of the change, height, weight, muscle mass, testosterone levels, etc.
    2. Only 1 player having competed as another gender can be a part of a team.
    Rugby
    - Trans athletes may not compete in the women’s category.
    Tennis
    1. Must declare female as gender identity.
    2. Must maintain under 5 nmol/L for at least 12 months prior to competition, and for as long as they would like to remain eligible.
    Triathlon
    1. Must declare female as gender identity.
    2. Must maintain under 2.5 nmol/L for at least 24 months prior to competition, and for as long as they would like to remain eligible.
    3. Cannot have competed as male within the past 4 years.
    Wrestling | Judo | Taekwondo | Boxing | Etc.
    - I could not find updated policies. Wrestling listed their old 2016 policy. Boxing is a big question mark because the IOC barred the IBA from organizing an Olympic event this year.
    Weightlifting
There have been recent reports of “open gender” IWF events, and restrictions in women’s events to exclude athletes who did not transition before puberty. However, I could not find an official IWF policy for the 2024 Olympics.
With all of this said, it's been a very long road for women to compete in sports in general, let alone on the world stage. While some will complain about these trans athlete rules, they can still compete with men. Being an Olympian is not a right.

What makes this evidently clear that this is strictly about men wanting to win... Is you don't see a trans male athlete complaining about competing in men's sports.

    Born Male. Born Female.
    How hard is that?
The Olympic Committee keeps wimping out and not making a definite decision. It is just not fair.

I'm a woman and am 21 years old, when I saw all of this start to become a reality last year, I could not believe it. All I could think was I was glad I had quite soccer, but I felt really sorry for the next generation that they would no longer be able to perform sports on an equal playing field.

The IOC is delegating it to the governing bodies. Many sports with a nMOL rule have lowered it to 2.5.
Lia Thomas didn't set any national records. A few Ivy records, meet records & team records, the 1650 Ivy record was broken the next year by a transfer from Cal to Penn.
Consider the NCAA set the transgender policy a decade prior and had a long standing policy of not changing rules midseason.

Please don't cast this discussion as left v right. IMHO it's not anything to do with it and sexual (gender) politics is not on the agenda of extremist parties on either wing.

In my experience here in the U.S., it’s only left-leaning individuals who support transgender athletes competing with women. The vast majority of moderates and people to the right don’t agree with it.
This was largely echoed by an NPR survey (I usually don’t reference these because they generally lean left)
“Nearly two-thirds of Americans (63%) are opposed to allowing transgender women and girls to compete on teams that align with their gender identity, while 24% overall support that.
Among Democrats, opinion is fairly split: a plurality, 46%, support trans female athletes' right to compete on women's and girls sports teams, while 41% oppose it.
Independent voters oppose trans female athletes right to compete by 3:1 (21% support; 63% oppose).
Among Republicans, support plummets to just 4%, while 88% oppose.”

The 2003 Olympic decision was partly made because of me and my National Championship win in 2003. I was the first trans woman to ever win a national championship and make a national team. I followed all the rules as I had been on HRT for 10 years and was post SRS for 5 years meaning my T count was around 0. I went on to compete at the international level for 7 years and certainly did not dominate my sport. I trained hard just like every other professional athlete and to my last breath will defend my participation. Sports is NEVER fair, ever. Sports has rules but is not fair. Biology dictates that we are all different and our hormonal makeup determines the ability of the body to perform hence the reason additional testosterone along with other performance enhancers are banned.
The main area that I'll dispute your position is results. Over 2 decades of trans women being eligible for Olympic competition and in all those years only one has competed in the games. If trans women had this perceived unfair advantage wouldn't we have piles of gold medals? Lia Thomas won an NCAA championship but take a look at her winning time and compare it to Katie Ledecky, multiple gold medalist. Lia is not even in the same range. She won one event.
Do you ever just listen to your own argument? A man or boy transitioning to female for what? A medal? Their name in a results list? Nobody goes through permanent alterations to their body to win in women's sport. You better pick tennis or golf as there's no financial incentive otherwise. It's women's sport. We can't even get athletic organizations to fund women's sport properly.
I have 3 National Championships and one World Championship. I sleep well at night knowing I earned them through years of hard work. I retired from racing in 2007 so save your outrage as I'm long since retired. I'm just happy I did my racing before social media gave a voice to creators like this dude who thinks a non trans bio male would go through hormonal and social transition to win a medal in women's sport. Do better.

Even if what you say here is true, you admitted to cheating. Sports are split up for FAIRNESS. Do you think it's no surprise regular biological women can't hold a candle to biological men in the athletic realm? Had you competed among men, you probably wouldn't even place. But lo and behold. You magically placed high (assuming, again, what you type all here is true - and no one here can verify and nor would they care, as you could be an elaborate troll). The top 10 fastest women's records would be considered mediocre by male standards. Not to mention, if you claimed your testosterone levels were apparently next to zero, you can't hide the fact that your male body would have advantages. From stronger muscles and denser bones, longer wingspans, better lung capacity and so forth.
I legit don't give two fucks if people want to identify as a damn cow or fox, but we are talking about sports here. Your argument about sports not being fair = actually shitty. Yeah, no shit. Every athlete is going to be different, but generally speaking, a male and female body are drastically different when it comes to competing in a physical capacity. In fact, many studies would suggest that a transwoman would have MARGINAL reductions in their strength and speed - even with extensive HRT. Stop acting like HRT would magically turn you into some weak and feeble (dainty) individual.
Finally, you think some "transwomen" (I use air quotes here because I am convinced a chunk of them are blatant cheaters who aren't actually trans) don't realize they are competing among people they shouldn't be matched with for fairness? You see vids of trashy athletes (for male standards) smoking the girl's division. How can you say this is remotely fair for the girls? Good girl athletes can't compete with 99 percent of male athletes at various skill levels after a certain point.
LOL. This shouldn't even be a debate. Men and women are biologically different. Saying sports should let everyone compete without any restrictions is actually stupid as hell. You need to do better.
(Also, seriously, no one fucking believes your story.)
