DESCRIPTION: I've been itching to learn more about the world of CNC but didn't want to invest big $$$ trying to find out if this area of woodworking was something I wanted to pursue.
Late one night earlier this year while traversing the depths of the internet, I stumbled upon the VEVOR 3018 Pro CNC which has to be one of, if not THE cheapest desktop CNCs money can buy.
So is it any good? Can you unlock the world of CNC for something that's this cheap?

thanks a ton. Great video, I'm a bit of a handyman, but absolutely green on CNC. I do have cad background as well as engineering. I am hoping this device may solve my "logo" need for mailboxes posts that are in my subdivision. No one around seems to be able to make replacements.

    Great video!!!!
If I had a Vevor cnc I would use it to create personalised and unique gifts for my kids (4&2) and their friends/cousins when we go to their birthday parties. Generally there is too much plastic junk that's get given and I would much rather given them something unique thoughtful rather than just something picked up at a shop.

'VEVOR' this is great Anthony! I just want one, i think this will sit perfectly under the laser cart that i just finished building. Just added a computer to it so its perfect and ready for an upgrade!, The form and scale is perfect for me, I literally dont have anymore room in the shop!, I know my CAD softwares very well but CAM has always been a bit scary so this should be good for me "just get started'!

Nice one! I was tempted to buy one of these (or a similar cheapo model) about a year ago, but assumed I'd get it and it would literally fall apart in my hands like a cheapo knockoff tool from Bunnings. Glad to see it's a lot more robust than I thought. I ended up buying a larger model later on, but this definitely would have been a great way to learn and play with Easel. 👍

I’ve been wanting to get a CNC for quite awhile now as they are a great asset to anyone’s workshop but the thing that’s holding me back is the software there’s a fear of buying one and then it turns into a dust collector because I’m to stupid to understand the platform but after watching your video and hearing the price of this cnc from vevor it’s peaked my interest.

As a retiree, this would be a great way to get into making CNC projects for family and friends. I am interested in getting into this hobby to make small personalize gifts like ornaments and other holiday types of giveaways. The opportunity to have a machine that is capable of CNC and lasering would be a benefit, and would complement each other in making quality giveaways. If this is truly as easy to use as stated, in this, TH-cam video would be a great way to be able to work my free time into a great hobby. I have researched both CNC and laser machines and found the prices to be a little on the high side for starting a true hobby. The expandability this machine sounds very promising as you never know where something like this will lead to in the future. So winning this CNC would be a great start for a new adventure in retirement.

I am new to CNCc and am wondering if a cheap CNC mill can be used as an automatic punching machine. i have a workpiece with dozens of precisely placed punch locations. Normally I use a sharpened needle to manually punch holes as its a sheet of soft material.
My questions are: 1) whether i can connect this sharp needle to the CNC and simply use it as a puncher instead of a drill. 2) my work area is about 4 inches square. The hole sizes are relatively small approx 1mm. Is there a way to manually tell the cnc every time i place a new workpiece what the rotation of my workpiece is. Or give it multiple reference points instead of just one (xy 00) so it knows what the rotation of workpiece is around the z axis. 3) I am not sure if the cnc can exert a certain force downward so the needle can punch hole all the way. if not, icould it be possible to connect an automatic spring loaded puncher so that the spindle just has to come down and the rest will happen by the impact of the spring.
    Thank you.

It's an interesting question friend, but I don't think this is the machine for you considering your requirements, at least not without considerable modification to the point that it's a different device in the end, rather than a simple adaption of capabilities it already has.
It definitely will not have the force to apply any sort of significant, or even light downward punch pressure, remember it's not designed for that, it's assuming a router bit that isn't going to give it resistance since it's milling/cutting what it plunges into.
Having said that, given how open source this is all is, I'm certain you could probably use the framework of the hardware to build a different device capable of doing, what it is you need, but it would require someone with the smarts to modify this platform to make that happen well beyond what simply comes out of the box.
      Hope that helps.

@@barberspaddockwoodworkingThanks for the reply. I do have some ideas to achieve a light force for the punch. A simpler question is whether a CNC can be told about the exact orientation/alignment of the workpiece? Because these punches are small and have to be at precise locations, if I can give CNC several reference points on the workpiece to determine its precise position/rotation/orientation, then it might work. Please let me know if that might be possible.

If I am placing a work piece onto the bed of the CNC, I need to calibrate the starting point each time manually, so the CNC knows where to begin. It has no way of knowing where the work piece is in relation to the spindle/bed, it's simply following a path programmed from then on. You could create a jig or a baseplate that would hold your piece in the same place each time, and it would only be the first calibration required to do repeats (assuming what you're punching/cutting is the same over and over again).

'VEVOR' - I plan to use the CNC to build a marginally larger CNC. Then I will teach that CNC to build a larger machine until I can upload chatGPT into it and it can do it all on its own and self replicate and become more intelligent and stronger and bigger....
We bow to our robot overlords! Wait, isnt that the plot behind the movie Terminator?
Maybe Ill just stuck to signs, trinkets and personalized cutting boards for friends and family. Or maybe not...

'VEVOR' - A friend of mine recently passed away, and he was somewhat of an artist doing drawings based on his favourite movies and games. Unfortunately he wasn't great about keeping many of the originals around, so I had the idea of printing some of his artwork out from photos on instagram and cutting them out on some nice bits of wood to present back to his family. I was quite proud of the job I did cutting out the outside shape on my first few attempts, but unfortunately all I had to do some of the more intricate inside line work was a Dremel and I absolutely butchered it. So if I win I would love to use this machine to cut them out in a bit more detail, maybe do a few different ones and give them out to some of his family and friends to remember him by.
Beyond that, I'd be keen to be able to personalise some of the stuff I do a bit more with names, and personalised images. My sister in law for example is very fond of Paris so I'd love to be able to add some images of the Eiffel tower etc to the ottoman/coffee table combo she's just asked me to produce.
Competition aside, another great video. I appreciate the detail you went to in explaining all about the device and capabilities. Keep it up!

Unfortunately a lot of misinformation or unprecise statements is present here. This makes it hard for people to understand what is going on.
First of all, if you refer to this kind of machine, then please don't just call it "a cnc", because a 3d printer is also a "cnc" and none of the information applies to a 3d printer. It's the same as referring to a car as "the awd" (all wheel drive).
Next, this does only apply to cnc routers or cnc mills that are based on grbl as the firmware on the controller board, which most cheap or diy cnc routers are. This determines, what kind of software you can use.
if you get a mach 3 or mach 4 controller then software like candle can't be used.
Further Easel is not a CAD software. And CAD is not even required at all, as you can just use vector graphics that you create in inkscape, adobe illustrator or any other vector program.
If you understand /learn gcode, then simple projects could be done using no cad, cam or vector software at all. More complex toolpaths however are hard to manage that way.
One thing to consider, when making the machine larger like you did, is that it will be weaker at the same time, because a larger area means longer rails and therefore higher leverage forces on them. Therefore I would not recommend upgrading the size only, but also use much thicker rails in that case.
Cutting aluminium is not really feasable without upgrades to thicker rails and a better anti backlash mechanism on all axis.

I respect your opinion on this and clearly, you know a thing or two about the subject. I've attempted to keep it simple, especially as I myself am still learning. I really don't think however someone is going to confuse my use of the term 'CNC' with '3D Printer' or other, but I do get your point, CNC can be used in reference to many other types of devices.
We could debate on whether we consider 'Easel' to be CAD or not CAD etc, but it's a program that can be used to design...on a computer, so while it might not meet all the features of full CAD like programs, I still think it meets the brief.
As for making the machine larger, I would agree it's important to not make it weaker, however I've not experienced any issues. I certainly would not make it any larger than this, especially since it's utilising screw rods rather than belts, but this extension is a kit you can buy for this model, and I've seen no reports amongst the dozens of brands they make this under from users saying there are issues.
Of course this is cheap, some will even call it 'a toy', so it's going to have limitations and usage scenarios it's not designed for (or shouldn't be used for).
Appreciate you taking the time to give constructive feedback as well!
