Building my first workshop, one project at a time.
It's been my dream for many years now to build a workshop to expand my woodworking hobby. After many years of saving and waiting, that dream finally in 2022 became reality. It's now time to move out of the tiny garden shed and into a space where I can learn and expand and more importantly share my passion with you.
This channel is dedicated to all those backyard weekend woodworking warriors who share the same passion I do for all things 'do it yourself'. I hope to share my workshop and future project builds with you all.
Thanks for visiting,
Anthony

ImPRESSive upgrades for my drill press
The drill press isn't the most celebrated or exciting tool in the shop, but certainly is an important one and that's why in this video, I'm going to show some love to my Bosch PBD-40 by addressing a few niggling pain points with a couple upgrades as well as mount it to my workbench.

This has been a BOOM to the shop! Overhead dust collection solved
มุมมอง 30K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I love my shop-vac, it goes everywhere in the shop I go, and it's probably the most used tool I have in the shop. The only issue is that it gets incredibly annoying to have to move it constantly around. It often gets in the way, and creates a tripping hazard as pipes and power cords lay across the shop. Inspired by what I saw Eric @SpencleyDesignCo do in his shop, I thought I'd make my own boom...

Unleash your table saws crosscut potential! DIY sliding crosscut table saw upgrade
มุมมอง 62K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
In the workshop, crosscutting larger panels that are more than 300mm wide has always been a challenge. My mitre saw is too small, the mitre gauge on the table saw isn't that much better, and my crosscut sled can't handle panels without modification or replacement. So what's the solution? Let's clear the air - Designing a DIY dust hood solution for my table saw

It would be so much easier and faster to cut out the "windows" with a quick plywood template and router with bushing and spiral upcut bit.
I'm not sure on faster, but in the end I did use my router table to clean them up using a template. I unfortunately don't own a router capable of using a bushing, so a pattern bit was the next best thing.
@@barberspaddockwoodworking IF you're not familiar with the Ron Paulk workbenches, check them out here on youtube. I'm building them now and that got me into pattern routing with bushings. It is really a game changer when working with plywood, especially when you need to make multiples of something. Making a quick pattern isn't hard, and will allow you make repeat cutouts in a consistent and fast way.
Great video, I am waiting delivery of my raspberry pi and this looks like an awesome project. The link to the google sketch up is not working. Do you have the current link?
Apologies, I've updated the link in the video description with the updated URL. :)
Hi, I tried accessing the light burn file link, but it didn't work :( Do you have an updated link by chance?
Apologies! Yes, I've updated the link in the description.
Do you sell these? Awesome build.
No sorry, not something I build to sell. I do have free templates / sizing plans on my website if you're interested in building one for yourself, but I don't build these to sell sorry.
Looks great
Thanks so much. Great end result, by the way. I’m envious of your set up!
Hi, just wondering where you got the fence for the circular saw from?
@Phnud fence for the circular saw? The mitre saw? If that's the fence you're referring to, then I made that one. It's in workshop build video 3 from memory if you want to see how it's made.
The t-square thing that you use when cutting down the ply on your driveway, about the 2 minute mark.
@Phnud oooohhh so sorry! That's the Kreg ripcut saw guide.
i went to the wash website and could not find the handles for the drill press. I have the same model and would like to purchase. Could you help with this?
found the link
I don't sorry plan to sell kits for this yet, especially based on someone else's work, but I may investigate with permission if it's possible. I suggest looking at the links and supporting the original designers first. 😀
Great upgrades Anthony! Love those handles on the wheel. I think I might that upgrade as well. Thank you for sharing 😀
The link to your sketchup file is saying page not found. Could you fix that so I could get your sketchup file?
It's on my website, but I've updated the link for you to go straight to it.
I may be out of order here, but if you had cut the insert hole with an offset towards the front of the base then you could get more use from each insert by rotating it slightly each time you need a fresh face. 😁. Oh, and sorry if others have already posted the same idea.
No not at all! One of the things I love about this journey and TH-cam is you're always learning, especially from the community. Yup, a few people have already pointed it out, and it's such a simple idea that I'm kinda annoyed with myself that I didn't think of it at the time. I think however I can retro fix this, so I may very well do that. That being said...I do have a couple hundred inserts...:)
Thanks
Ha ha your my kind of fav Utuber soon as you patted the Vac I had to sub... I always pat me tools tell'em they've done a good job and the tractor(old'boy) and Ute(mate), sometimes give them a pet talk before the job too :)
He's definitely my favourite!
Did you do the insulation yourself? would be keen to know more about it and how you did it if thats the case.
The insulation, no that I had installed with the shed when it was built. I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you are planning on putting any aircon in yours. It really helps keep the temp in (or out) (at least for me.)
Some handheld drills have protection, not to spray your wrists.not the cheap ones.
Protection or not, I did all the wrong things when that accident happened. It was early in my woodworking journey and I can assure you it won't happen again.
Any chance you can post a link to the double sided tape, or possibly confirm if the name is spelled Daiso? I can find Daiso tape but it doesn't look like the tape you use in the video, I mean the one I can find is just a roll of tape and doesn't come in the little cardboard cutter thing you are using.
Sorry! I can't find a link to an AUS site for this, but it's definitely available here. Here is the SG link that is the exact one I use and it's great! shop.daisosingapore.com.sg/collections/scdouble-faced-tape/products/4549131534887
thank you well done
I have watched hours and hours of TH-cam videos preparing for retirement. Your was amazing to me. I actually went to "Dainer Made's" page, however instead he had yours up instead. I don't know if he is trying to promote you, or what the story is, I am very glad that he did. I have subscribed, and liked. I have gone to the oldest video, and will watch then in order. I can't wait until you start talking! Thank you for the great content. My best, Katie Anderson
Made my day!
Another great video mate, your style and delivery are spot on. I'd like to purchase a 'set' of your Shims, when you get to make them for sale. Soon, I hope. I also like the colours you have selected for each size. I guess a set of four for each size would be about right, not sure! About a year back, I purchased an Ozito digital so called table top drill press from Bunnings. Outstanding drill press but, it is a beast and so heavy. I'm 50/50 on dumping it for something a bit mor portable (lighter). I looked at the Bosch at the time but, thought it was a bit to small. Should have thought that through a bit more. Anyway, now the good weather has arrived, I'll be getting out into my two car garage/workshop. Got a few projects I'd like to do. Thanks again mate, love your video. see you in your next one. Kind regards, kmdc.
Thank you so much Keith!
I prefer round inserts. You can turn just a few degrees to get a new surface, especially when using small bits. Where as square one you only get 4 surfaces maybe 8 if you can use both sides.
Someone else mentioned this and it's one of those 'oh duh, why didn't I think of that moments'. But that's learning for you. I can still probably do this, just need to change the insert location.
@barberspaddockwoodworking not sure on that drill press. But could the column be turned in the base slightly to offset the insert?
Good thinking, but no unfortunately, it has a pin that aligns it straight with the base. I can certainly enlarge the hole and offset from the top, I have plenty of the coasters for large ones as well anyway, so I may very well do that.
I'd be interested in purchasing a set of shims.
Working on something, and who knows. Will maybe offer them soon. :)
@@barberspaddockwoodworking The shims looked nicely done, they'd be a quality addition to my shop.
Your top drawer can also double as a dust tray when you drill through the sacrificial insert 😉 Jokes aside, nice build! It's given me some good ideas for building my PBD40 Into my cabinets 👍
Now that.....is a really good idea. I'm going to ensure I have a centre tray that does that.
Another cracking upgrade to the shop mate. 👍
Thank you friend!
if you offset the circular hole for the sacrificial inserts (or rotate the hear a little to the left or right), you can rotate the mdf to get a fresh bit of the mdf circle for better support and not have to replace the inserts as often
Ah brilliant!
A question, is it not a bit low or have you put it to a height more suitable for yourself? Looks super cool, the whole workshop tbh 👍🏻
Thanks! No not low for me, probably for some other people yes, but it is a small drill press, so standing next to it, it probably gives off that perception!
Thank you for the video. The acrilic you have on then drill press, did you made it ? Or…
@@pedro-marques-jesus Oh you mean the guard on the front? Yeah that comes with the drill press, nothing I did on that one. 🙂
Great video. As usual. No shock there. ❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Appreciate that!
How good are Shims 😉 Great upgrades mate
Amazing. I'm thinking of adapting the design for a rolling tool stand so I can set my small planer and jointer up to bench height but still store them away when not in use.
Everything was great except the rubber bumper not recommended for that size
@@pitiknilitzkie Could you expand on that? What specific would be wrong with this bumper?
@barberspaddockwoodworking Amazing job. Truly top notch. My question, though, if you’re building this to play on regularly - what do you do when you need to inevitably replace the felt?
I'm not sure how long that would be, but assuming I needed to do that, I'd probably just remove the rails (they are just bolted on), then remove the felt and the million staples and replace. I don't think this would be too difficult on this design.
@@barberspaddockwoodworking Makes sense, thanks. Again, absolutely incredible work. Goal project for the future! Trying to get back into wood working and this probably isn’t quite within my realm yet Cheers buddy, keep it up! (And thanks for the quick reply)
Excelente trabajo, saludos desde Costa Rica.
One thing that i'd personally add to this would be a ball return system. Great work man!
Thanks! Yes if I had my time again, I'd work out a way to make that happen, but I'll be honest, I didn't have the skills or confidence that I feel I have today to have made that happen at the time. If I was to do another one, I would certainly add things like a ball return.
What camera/microphone do you use? It sounds so good! Getting into youtube and am searching for good gear. Thank you!
It might surprise you to learn: The camera is an old smartphone, specifically a Samsung S10. The mic is a RODE Wireless ME. You do not have to top end uber expensive equipment to just get started.
I've seen these but never felt compelled to build one. For some reason you just sold me :) I have a 4x4 CNC so I should be able to knock out the holes pretty quick. I need to get better about using the CNC to solve shop problems and not just making products.
That's amazing to hear!
Best by far ,,,thanks
You just solved an issue I’ve been struggling trying to solve, in the same boat with table saw, router and my assembly table, so have a project for tomorrow
Amazing to hear!
Why not do some talking to tell people what you are doing?
Valid question, and let me answer this as honestly as I can. This was one of my very early, and very first youtube videos. When I started, I didn't really have any idea what I was doing, and I mean that from both a woodworking point of view and a film editing point of view (and some will argue that I still don't, which I wouldn't totally disagree with). Given my inexperience as both a video maker and a woodworker at the time, I felt completely inadequate and unprepared to be telling people what I was doing, or how they should be doing it. I was just too scared to be honest. So the video was more about just watching someone build a pool table, and hopefully giving people their own ideas or concepts on how they might approach it themselves, as apposed to a 'tutorial'. So yes, fast forward to today, I've learnt a lot and gained more confidence to speak on camera and off camera and I'm certain this type of project I could more adequately cover. I may one day sit down and do a follow up video where I go into more details of this build for those that want to attempt it themselves, however I would say that I'm easily contactable, and you can ask any questions regarding the build, and I'll answer them to my best of my abilities. Thanks for your question!
Thank you.
1:37 i have a crosscut sled smaller than the one you have and i already don't like reaching for it. lol it works well but it's just me being lazier than normal.
100% can relate to this. If it's annoying or too much hassle to get out or use, you won't use it!
Hola maestro, excelente trabajo , un favor , me podrías compartir las medidas que tomaste en las tabla para hacer los huecos de la mesa, gracias.
Hola! Check the first pinned comment, there is a link to the template I made for the pockets!
So this dust collection system is separate from the existing, larger dust collection system that is seen in the background, correct?
That's correct! It's not because I couldn't use it (I could plumb it in), and everything to do with the nature of how a shop vac works vs how a dust extractor works. Dust extractors work at low pressure/high volume and are fantastic at collecting the big chips/saw dust (table saw, jointer, thicknesser etc). Shop vacs work at high pressure/low volume and are best at picking up the fine dust. It's why people still use vacs for things like sanding, it's just better at that job.
I have noticed your creative use of formply with many of your projects which I like the idea, as it is economical to purchase. However, I have a question about gluing. As I refuse to use pocket screws but prefer to use a dominos for all on my joinery, would this material still be suitable? Because of the problem with gluing the non-porus surface, I can see this as a potential major issue.
Thanks for your question, and yes you are correct, traditional wood glue will not sorry, stick to this surface, it's why it makes such a great work bench material but also means you need to consider how you will join/connect panels together. One option is to resort to some of other construction adhesive (which I've not personally tried) to try and glue it. The other simplier option, is to use DADOs/Rabbets to give yourself a better gluing surface.
*Cotter pin
Ah so that's what they are called!
Please quit with the childish cringeworthy video clips. They add nothing to your content and are tiresome to have to endure. Serious content doesn't require them to add value to your channel and your target audience is probably not 5 years old.
Duly noted.
great work!
Great job man!! Would you mind sending me the plans in standard size measurements? I wouldn’t love to make one for myself just like this. It would work out perfectly.
Great build Anthony. My dust collections a real problem at the moment so I might have to look at something like this to get me through. But the shop layout is complicated. Time to have a think! Cheers.

the review for the remote power switch recommened by you say they stop working after a few months
@dappratt5277 I've currently got 3, and one on my main dust collector. The oldest one is a year old, so for me, so far so good but I have seen some other people report problems yes. I'm sure there are lots of other options/brands available, this just happens to be what I'm using.
Galvanized emt: quicker, cheaper, lighter, sturdier, less bulky, smarter. Wood is not the most appropriate material sometimes.
I would happily concede a few of those points, but also respectfully disagree with several others. I do not think using formply for this type of project is inappropriate at all. Would this suit every shop? Of course not, but it certainly works for me and based on what I've seen, works plenty well for others. Of course as always each to their own, I'm not a metal worker, but if you are then you do you! Appreciate the constructive comment!
